The quadratic low-temperature dependence of resistance in ordinary metals is determined by the momentum relaxation due to electron-electron scattering in the presence Umklapp processes and scattering on impurities. In metals without inversion center spin-orbit interaction of electrons with crystal lattice lifts spin degeneracy of electron states and splits each band on two bands. The temperature dependence of electron-electron collisions scattering rate is found using the matrix kinetic equation including the electron-impurity and electron-electron intra and inter band scattering. It is shown that in clean enough case when the energy of band splitting exceeds the electron-impurity scattering rate but at the same time it is much smaller than the Fermi energy the square low-temperature dependence of resistivity is still valid.
We performed a systematic study of the temperature- and field-dependence of magnetization and resistivity of Gd2PdSi3, which is a centrosymmetric skyrmion crystal. While the magnetization behavior is consistent with the reported phase diagram based on susceptibility, we show that a phase diagram can also be constructed based on the anomalous magnetoresistance with one-to-one correspondence among all the features. In addition, the crossover boundary into the field-induced ferromagnetic state is also identified. Our results suggest that the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations above the Néel temperat…
We report magnetization and specific heat measurements down to 2 K and electrical resistivity down to millikelvin temperatures on polycrystalline samples of the non-centrosymmetric compound Yb2Co12P7. In addition to the previously reported ferromagnetic ordering of the cobalt sub-lattice at T_C = 136 K we find a magnetic transition below T_M = 5 K that is likely associated with ordering of the Yb ions. The broad nature of the specific heat anomaly suggests disordered magnetism and possible short range correlations well above T_M.
The hedgehog lattice (HL) is a three-dimensional topological spin texture hosting a periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles. It has been studied theoretically for noncentrosymmetric systems with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but the stability, as well as the magnetic and topological properties, remains elusive in the centrosymmetric case. We here investigate the ground state of an effective spin model with long-range bilinear and biquadratic interactions for a centrosymmetric cubic metal by simulated annealing. We show that our model stabilizes a HL composed of two pair…
The two-dimensional Rashba-Hubbard model is investigated in order to clarify the electron correlation effects in non-centrosymmetric metals. The renormalization effect on Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) is calculated on the basis of second-order and third-order perturbation theories. We show that RSOC is enhanced by the electron correlation. On the other hand, the spin-splitting of the Fermi momentum (SFM) is robust against the electron correlation effect because the enhancement of RSOC is cancelled by the $k$-mass renormalization. The cancellation is almost perfect in often adopted models i…
According to the Onsager principle a matrix of kinetic coefficients is symmetric in a system not violating time inversion symmetry. The antisymmetry is possible in systems with broken time inversion symmetry f.i. in systems in external magnetic field. An exception to this rule is presented here. It is shown that in a tetragonal metals with point group $C_{4v}$ not violating time inversion the conductivity tensor is antisymmetric. The corresponding optical properties are considered.
Ferromagnetic quantum criticality in clean metals has proven elusive due to fermionic soft modes that drive the transition first order. We show that non-centrosymmetric metals with a strong spin-orbit interaction provide a promising class of materials for realizing a ferromagnetic quantum critical point in clean systems. The spin-orbit interaction renders massive the soft modes that interfere with quantum criticality in most materials, while the absence of spatial inversion symmetry precludes the existence of new classes of soft modes that could have the same effect.
We present a study of Cu-substitution effects in 4f-Ce intermetallic compound CeAu1-xCuxGe, with potentially unusual electronic states, in the whole concentration range (x = 0.0 - 1.0). The parent CeAuGe compound, crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric hexagonal structure, is a ferromagnetic semimetal with Curie temperature 10 K. Cu-doping on Au-site of CeAuGe, CeAu1-xCuxGe, changes the crystal structure from the non-centrosymmetric (P63mc) to centrosymmetric (P63/mmc) space group at the concentration x ~ 0.5, where the c-lattice constant has a maximum value. Magnetic susceptibility and electr…
We report the observation of anomalous Hall resistivity in single crystals of EuAl$_4$, a centrosymmetric tetragonal compound, which exhibits coexisting antiferromagnetic (AFM) and charge-density-wave (CDW) orders with onset at $T_\mathrm{N} \sim 15.6$ K and $T_\mathrm{CDW} \sim 140$ K, respectively. In the AFM state, when the magnetic field is applied along the $c$-axis direction, EuAl$_4$ undergoes a series of metamagnetic transitions. Within this field range, we observe a clear hump-like anomaly in the Hall resistivity, representing part of the anomalous Hall resistivity. By considering dif…
Non-centrosymmetric EuTGe3 (T=Co, Ni, Rh, and Ir) possesses magnetic Eu2+ ions and antiferromagnetic ordering appears at low temperatures. Transition metal substitution leads to changes of the unit cell volume and of the magnetic ordering. However, the magnetic ordering temperature does not scale with the volume change and the Eu valence is expected to remain divalent. Here we study the bulk electronic structure of non-centrosymmetric EuTGe3 (T=Co, Ni, Rh, and Ir) by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Eu 3d core level spectrum confirms the robust Eu2+ valence state against the transiti…
We report synthesis of non-centrosymmetric BiPd single crystal by self flux method. The BiPd single crystal is crystallized in monoclinic structure with the P21 space group. Detailed SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) results show that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology with homogenous distribution of Bi and Pd. The magnetic susceptibility measurement confirmed that the BiPd compound is superconducting below 4K. Further, BiPd exhibits weak ferromagnetism near the superconducting transition temperature in isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements. The temperature dependent electri…
In this work, we establish the bulk superconductivity of a high quality sample of monoclinic BiPd ($α$-BiPd, space group P2$_1$) below 3.87 K by studying its electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity. We show that it is clean type-II superconductor with moderate electron-phonon coupling and determine its superconducitng and normal state parameters. Although $α$-BiPd is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with large electronic heat capacity (therefore, large $γ$), the effect of spin-orbit splitting of the electronic bands at the Fermi level is small. This makes little in…

We report the single-crystal growth of the non-centrosymmetric paramagnet U3Ni3Sn4 by the Bridgman method and the Fermi surface properties detected by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiments. We have also investigated single-crystal U3Ni3Sn4 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies reveals many closed Fermi surfaces, which are nearly spherical in topology. The experimental results are in good agreement with local density approximation (LDA) band structure calculations based on the 5f…
A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb$_2$Ni$_{12}$P$_7$ is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C(T)$, and thermoelectric power $S(T)$ measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, $C_{e}(T)$, behaves as $C_{e}(T)/T \sim -\ln(T)$ for 5 K $< T <$ 15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below $T \sim$ 4 K, the upturn in $C_{e}(T)/T$ begins to saturate, suggesting that the system crosses over into a Fermi-liquid ground state. This is consistent with robust $ρ(T) - ρ_0 = AT^2$…
We propose a route to achieve odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity in metallic collinear antiferromagnets with inversion symmetry. Owing to the existence of hidden antiunitary symmetry, which we call the effective time-reversal symmetry (eTRS), the Fermi surfaces of ordinary antiferromagnetic metals are generally spin-degenerate, and spin-singlet pairing is favored. However, by introducing a local inversion symmetry breaking perturbation that also breaks the eTRS, we can lift the degeneracy to obtain spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. In the weak-coupling limit, the spin-polarized Fermi surfa…
Efforts to understand metallic behaviour have led to important concepts such as those of strange metal, bad metal or Planckian metal. However, a unified description of metallic resistivity is still missing. An empirical analysis of a large variety of metals shows that the parallel resistor formalism used in the cuprates, which includes T-linear and T-quadratic dependence of the electron scattering rates, can be used to provide a phenomenological description of the electrical resistivity in all metals, where these two contributions are shown to correspond to the two first terms of a Taylor expa…
Anomalous transport behavior -- both longitudinal and Hall -- is the defining characteristic of the strange-metal state of High-Tc cuprates. The temperature, frequency, and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity is understood within strange metal phenomenology as resulting from energy-scale competition to set the inelastic relaxation rate. The anomalously strong temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, however, is at odds with this phenomenology. Here we report measurements of the Hall resistivity in the strange metal state of cuprates over a broad range of magnetic fields and tem…
We consider a short-range deformation potential scattering model of electron-acoustic phonon interaction to calculate the resistivity of an ideal metal as a function of temperature (T) and electron density (n). We consider both 3D metals and 2D metals, and focus on the dilute limit, i.e., low effective metallic carrier density of the system. The main findings are: (1) a phonon scattering induced linear-in-T resistivity could persist to arbitrarily low T in the dilute limit independent of the Debye temperature ($T_D$) although eventually the low-T resistivity turns over to the expected Bloch-Gr…
An unusual, non-metallic resistivity of the 111 iron-pnictide compound FeCrAs is shown to be relatively unchanged under pressures of up to 17 GPa. Combined with our previous finding that this non-metallic behaviour persists from at least 80 mK to 800 K, this shows that the non-metallic phase is exceptionally robust. Antiferromagnetic order, with a Neel temperature T_N ~ 125 K at ambient pressure, is suppressed at a rate of 7.1 +/- 0.1 K/GPa, falling to below 50 K at 10 GPa. We conclude that formation of a spin-density wave gap at T_N does not play an important role in the non-metallic resistiv…

Based on first principle calculations, we show that a family of nonmagnetic materials including TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP are Weyl semimetal (WSM) without inversion center. We find twelve pairs of Weyl points in the whole Brillouin zone (BZ) for each of them. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), band inversions in mirror invariant planes lead to gapless nodal rings in the energy-momentum dispersion. The strong SOC in these materials then opens full gaps in the mirror planes, generating nonzero mirror Chern numbers and Weyl points off the mirror planes. The resulting surface state Fermi a…
We make use of the time-dependent density functional theory to derive a new formally exact expression for the dc resistivity of metals with impurities. This expression takes fully into account the dynamics of electron-electron interactions. Correction to the conventional $T$-matrix (phase-shifts) theory is treated within hydrodynamics of inhomogeneous viscous electron liquid. As a first application, we present calculations of the residual resistivity of aluminum as a function of the atomic number of the impurities. We show that the inclusion of many-body corrections considerably improves the a…
The electrical resistivity of Fermi liquids (FLs) displays a quadratic temperature ($T$) dependence because of electron-electron (e-e) scattering. For such collisions to decay the charge current, there are two known mechanisms: inter-band scattering (identified by Baber) and Umklapp events. However, dilute metallic strontium titanate (STO) was found to display $T^2$ resistivity in absence of either of these two mechanisms. The presence of soft phonons and their possible role as scattering centers raised the suspicion that $T$-square resistivity in STO is not due to e-e scattering. Here, we pre…
Bad metals display transport behavior that differs from what is commonly seen in ordinary metals. One of the most significant differences is a resistivity that is linear in temperature and rises to well above the Ioffe-Regel limit (where the mean-free path is equal to the lattice spacing). Using an exact Kubo formula, we show that a linear resistivity naturally occurs for many systems when they are in an incoherent intermediate-temperature state. We verify the analytic arguments with numerical calculations for a simplified version of the Hubbard model which is solved with dynamical mean-field …
We report a detailed analysis of the electrical resistivity exponent of thin films of NdNiO3 as a function of epitaxial strain. Strain-free thin-films show a linear dependence of the resistivity vs temperature, consistent with a classical Fermi gas ruled by electron-phonon interactions. In addition, the apparent temperature exponent, n, can be tuned with the epitaxial strain between n= 1 and n= 3. We discuss the critical role played by quenched random disorder in the value of n. Our work shows that the assignment of Fermi/Non-Fermi liquid behaviour based on experimentally obtained resistivity …
The influence of electronic structure evolution upon pressure on the temperature dependencies of electrical resistivity of pure Np, Pu, Am, and Cm metals have been investigated within coherent potential approximation (CPA) for many-bands conductivity model. Electronic structure of pure actinide metals was calculated within the local density approximation with the Hubbard U and spin-orbit coupling corrections (LDA+U+SO) method in various phases at normal conditions and under pressure. They were compared with the corresponding cubic (bcc or fcc) phases. The densities of states of the latter were…
Resistivity in the quantum-critical fluctuation region of several metallic compounds such as the cuprates, the heavy-fermions, Fe-chalogenides and pnictides, twisted bi-layer graphene and WSe$_2$, is linear in temperature $T$ as well as in a magnetic field $H$. Scattering of fermions by the excitations of a time-reversal odd polar vector field ${\bf Ω}$ characterizing loop-current fluctuations has been shown to give a linear in T resistivity and other anomalous properties in the cuprates. An extension of this theory to an applied magnetic field is presented. Magnetic field is shown to generate…
We predict that long-range interactions give rise to anisotropy in the electrical resistivity of Weyl metals at low temperatures, where the electrical resistivity becomes much reduced when electric fields are applied to the direction of the momentum vector to connect two paired Weyl points. Performing the renormalization group analysis, we find that the distance between two Weyl points becomes enhanced logarithmically at low temperatures although the coupling constant of such interactions vanishes inverse-logarithmically. Considering the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly, scattering between these two …
PrRu$_4$Sn$_6$ is a tetragonal, non-centrosymmetric structure compound. It is isostructural to the extensively studied Kondo insulator CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ which crystallizes in the YRu$_4$Sn$_6$-type structure with space group $I$\={4}2$m$. In this structure, the Pr atom fills the void formed by the octahedral Ru$_4$Sn$_6$ units which results in a tetragonal body-centred arrangement. Here we present reports on the physical and magnetic properties of PrRu$_4$Sn$_6$. The temperature dependences of specific heat, $C_p(T)$, electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, reveal the…
The resistivities of the dilute, strongly-interacting 2D electron systems in the insulating phase of a silicon MOSFET are the same for unpolarized electrons in the absence of magnetic field and for electrons that are fully spin polarized by the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. In both cases the resistivity obeys Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping $ρ(T) = ρ_0 \mbox{exp}[(T_{ES}/T)^{1/2}]$, with $T_{ES}$ and $1/ρ_0$ mapping onto each other if one applies a shift of the critical density $n_c$ reported earlier. With and withoug magnetic field, the parameters $T_{ES}$ and $1/ρ_0 = σ_0$ …
`Strange metals' with resistivity depending linearly on temperature $T$ down to low-$T$ have been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. Here, we consider a model of itinerant spin-$1/2$ fermions interacting via on-site Hubbard interaction and random infinite-ranged spin-spin interaction. We show that the quantum critical point associated with the melting of the spin-glass phase by charge fluctuations displays non-Fermi liquid behaviour, with local spin dynamics identical to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev family of models. This extends the quantum spin liquid dynamics previously es…
The semiclassical description of two-dimensional ($2d$) metals based on the quasiparticle picture suggests that there is a universal threshold of the resistivity: the resistivity of a $2d$ metal is bounded by the so called Mott-Ioffe-Regal (MIR) limit, which is at the order of $h/e^2$. If a system remains metallic while its resistivity is beyond the MIR limit, it is referred to as a "bad metal", which challenges our theoretical understanding as the very notion of quasiparticles is invalidated. The description of the system becomes even more challenging when there is also strong correlation bet…
We present a strange metal, described by a holographic duality, which reproduces the famous linear resistivity of the normal state of the copper oxides, in addition to the linear specific heat. This holographic metal reveals a simple and general mechanism for producing such a resistivity, which requires only quenched disorder and a strongly interacting, locally quantum critical state. The key is the minimal viscosity of the latter: unlike in a Fermi-liquid, the viscosity is very small and therefore is important for the electrical transport. This mechanism produces a resistivity proportional to…
We present experimental results for the in-plane resistivity of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor $La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4$ above its transition temperature $T_c$ as a function of Ce doping x and temperature. For the doping x between 0.11 and 0.17, where $T_c$ varies from 30 K (x=0.11) to 5 K (x=0.17), we find that the resistivity shows an approximate $T^2$ behavior for all values of doping over the measurement range from 100 K to 400 K. The coefficient of the $T^2$ resistivity term decreases with increasing x following the trend in $T_c$. We analyze our data theoretically and posit that n-t…
Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R-3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3. The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li+ …
The theory for the onset of spin density wave order in a metal in two dimensions flows to strong coupling, with strong interactions not only at the `hot spots', but on the entire Fermi surface. We advocate the computation of DC transport in a regime where there is rapid relaxation to local equilibrium around the Fermi surface by processes which conserve total momentum. The DC resistivity is then controlled by weaker perturbations which do not conserve momentum. We consider variations in the local position of the quantum critical point, induced by long-wavelength disorder, and find a contributi…
We present a comprehensive dynamical mean field study of the triangular lattice moiré Hubbard model, which is believed to represent the physics of moiré bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. In these materials, important aspects of the band structure including the bandwidth and the order and location of van Hove singularities can be tuned by varying the interlayer potential. We present a magnetic and metal-insulator phase diagram and a detailed study of the dependence of the resistivity on temperature, band filling and interlayer potential. We find that transport displays Fermi liquid, str…
