The semiclassical description of two-dimensional ($2d$) metals based on the quasiparticle picture suggests that there is a universal threshold of the resistivity: the resistivity of a $2d$ metal is bounded by the so called Mott-Ioffe-Regal (MIR) limit, which is at the order of $h/e^2$. If a system remains metallic while its resistivity is beyond the MIR limit, it is referred to as a "bad metal", which challenges our theoretical understanding as the very notion of quasiparticles is invalidated. The description of the system becomes even more challenging when there is also strong correlation between the electrons. Partly motivated by the recent experiment on transition metal dichalcogenides moiré heterostructure, we seek for understanding of strongly correlated bad metals whose resistivity far exceeds the MIR limit. For some strongly correlated bad metals, though a microscopic description based on electron quasiparticles fails, a tractable dual description based on the "vortex of charge" is still possible. We construct a concrete example of such strongly correlated bad metals where vortices are fermions with a Fermi surface, and we demonstrate that its resistivity can be exceptionally large at zero temperature. And when extra charge $δn_e$ is doped into the system away from half-filling, a small Drude weight proportional to $(δn_e)^2$ will emerge in the optical conductivity .
K(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 has been investigated by Raman scattering in both bulk and nanoparticle compounds. Phonon modes from 20 to 1600 cm-1 have been assigned. Focusing on the unexplored low frequency phonons, a plateau in frequencies is observed in the bulk phonons between 50 and 100 K and assigned to the signature of the bad metal phase. Nanoparticles of K(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 exhibit anomalies at 50 K associated to the crossover from a bad metal to a Fermi liquid whose origins are discussed.
We study the finite-temperature properties of the half-filled two-band Hubbard model in the presence of Hund's rule coupling and orbital anisotropy. We use the mean-field treatment of the $Z_2$ slave-spin theory with a finite-temperature extension of the zero-temperature gauge variable previously developed by Hassan and de' Medici http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.035106}{Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 035106 (2010)}]. We consider the instability of the Fermi liquid phases and how it is enhanced by the Hund's rule. We identify paramagnetic solutions that have zero quasi-particle weight with bad me…
Resistances that exceed the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, known as bad metal behavior, and non-Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of many strongly correlated materials. Here we establish the conditions that lead to bad metal and non-Fermi liquid phases in NdNiO3, which exhibits a prototype, bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator transition. We show that resistance saturation is determined by the magnitude of the Ni eg orbital splitting, which can be tuned by strain in epitaxial films, causing the appearance of bad metal behavior under certain conditions. The results shed…
Good metals are characterised by diffusive transport of coherent quasi-particle states and the resistivity is much less than the Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit, $\frac{ha}{e^{2}}$, where $a$ is the lattice constant. In bad metals, such as many strongly correlated electron materials, the resistivity exceeds the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit and the transport is incoherent in nature. Hartnoll, loosely motivated by holographic duality (AdS/CFT correspondence) in string theory, recently proposed a lower bound to the charge diffusion constant, $D \gtrsim \hbar v_{F}^{2}/(k_{B}T)$, in the incoherent regime o…
Lanthanum family of high-temperature cuprate superconductors is known to exhibit both spin and charge electronic modulations around doping level 1/8. We assume that these modulations have the character of two-dimensional spin-vortex checkerboard and investigate whether this assumption is consistent with the Fermi surface and the pseudogap measured by angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy. We also explore the possibility of observing quantum oscillations of transport coefficients in such a background. These investigations are based on a model of non-interacting spin-1/2 fermions hopping on…
High-$T_{\rm C}$ superconductors show anomalous transport properties in their normal states, such as the bad-metal and pseudogap behaviors. To discuss their origins, it is important to speculate whether these behaviors are material-dependent or universal phenomena in the proximity of the Mott transition, by investigating similar but different material systems. An organic Mott transistor is suitable for this purpose owing to the adjacency between the two-dimensional Mott insulating and superconducting states, simple electronic properties, and high doping/bandwidth tunability in the same sample.…

We develop U(1) slave spin-rotor theory, suggesting a metal-metal transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a bad metal phase, as U(1) slave charge-rotor theory [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 035114 (2004)] describes a metal-insulator transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a spin-liquid phase. U(1) slave spin-rotor formulation allows us to generalize Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory for ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions, replacing Landau's Fermi-liquid state with an incoherent metallic phase. As a result, we argue that localized magnetic moments emerge to govern quantum critical physics …
We investigate transport in strongly correlated metals. Within dynamical mean-field theory, we calculate the resistivity, thermopower, optical conductivity and thermodynamic properties of a hole-doped Mott insulator. Two well-separated temperature scales are identified: T_FL below which Landau Fermi liquid behavior applies, and T_MIR above which the resistivity exceeds the Mott-Ioffe-Regel value and `bad-metal' behavior is found. We show that quasiparticle excitations remain well-defined above T_FL and dominate transport throughout the intermediate regime T_FL < T_MIR. The lifetime of these `r…
We discuss the dispersionless spectrum with zero energy in the linear topological defects - vortices. The flat band emerges inside the vortex living in the bulk medium containing topologically stable Fermi points in momentum space. The boundaries of the flat band in the vortex are determined by projections of the Fermi points in bulk to the vortex axis. This bulk-vortex correspondence for flat band is similar to the bulk-surface correspondence discussed earlier in the media with topologically protected lines of zeroes. In the latter case the flat band emerges on the surface of the system, and …
We study the low-temperature properties of a Kondo lattice using the large-N formalism. For a singular density of conduction states (DOS), we generalize the single-impurity result of Withoff and Fradkin: the strong-coupling fixed point becomes irrelevant if the DOS vanishes at the Fermi level E_F. However, for E_F close enough to the singularity, and close to half-filling, the Kondo temperature, $T_K$, can become much smaller than the characteristic Fermi liquid scale. At T=0, a meta-magnetic transition occurs at the critical magnetic field H_c ~ (k_B/mu_B) T_K. Our results provide a qualitati…
This paper has been withdrawn and replaced by a new version entitled "Vortex quantum dynamics of two dimensional lattice bosons" By Netanel H. Lindner, Assa Auerbach, Daniel P. Arovas, posted in arXiv:0810.2604. The calculations and results of the original manuscript were correct, and lead to several important conclusions about vortex dynamics and Hall conductance. However, we have dropped our conjecture, that vortices exhibit mutual Fermi statistics. The conjecture was based on the antisymmetry under exchange of two vortices, as revealed in the lowest eight many-body eigenstates of 16 sites t…
Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of avai…
In this paper we study the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for Fermi liquid superconductors with strong Landau interactions $F_0$ and $F_1$. We show that Landau interactions renormalize two parameters entering the GL equation leading to renormalization of superfluid density and separation of length and energy scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations. The separation of energy/length scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations in term leads to unconventional (2D) KT transition and vortex liquid phase. Application of the GL equation to describe underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates is being discussed.
The experimentally observed bad metal behavior in parent iron pnictides and chalcogenides suggests that these systems contain strong electronic correlations and are on the verge of a metal-to-insulator transition. The magnetic excitations in this bad-metal regime mainly derive from the incoherent part of the electronic spectrum away from the Fermi energy. We present a microscopic study of the exchange interactions in such a regime within a slave rotor approach. We find that the exchange interaction is maximized near the Mott transition. Generalizations to the multi-orbital case are discussed, …
We argue that the low- frequency quantum oscillations observed recently in the vortex state of underdoped ortho II-YBCO have the same origin as in other strongly correlated electronic systems. Superconductivity driven by strong interactions on several Fermi surfaces creates proximity gaps on the other. The gap transferred on a small-sized pocket from larger Fermi surfaces is small. In case of unconventional pairing symmetry the induced gap is proportional to ratio of the oscillations' frequencies for small and large Fermi surfaces. The gap is in inverse proportion to mass enhancement on the la…
Variational wavefunctions that introduce zeros (vortices) to screen repulsive interactions are typically difficult to verify in unbiased microscopic calculations. An approach is constructed to insert vortices into ansatz wavefunctions using a matrix product representation. This approach opens the door to validation of a broad class of Jastrow-based wavefunctions. The formalism is applied to a model motivated by experiments on ultracold atomic gases in the presence of synthetic spin-orbit coupling. Validated wavefunctions show that vortices in atomic Fermi gases with flat Rashba spin-orbit band…
We study Dirac fermions in two spatial dimensions (2D) coupled to strongly fluctuating U(1) gauge fields in the presence of quenched disorder. Such systems are dual to theories of free Dirac fermions, which are vortices of the original theory. In analogy to superconductivity, when these fermionic vortices localize, the original system becomes a perfect conductor, and when the vortices possess a finite conductivity, the original fermions do as well. We provide several realizations of this principle and thereby introduce new examples of strongly interacting 2D metals that evade Anderson localiza…
We use a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formulation to describe a single vortex in a neutral fermionic gas. It is presumed that the attractive pairing interaction can be arbitrarily tuned to exhibit a crossover from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation. Our starting point is the BCS-Leggett mean field ground state for which a BdG approach is microscopically justified. At strong coupling, we demonstrate that this approach is analytically equivalent to the Gross-Pitaevskii description of vortices in true bosonic systems. We analyze the sizable density depletion found for the unitary regime and relate i…
By analyzing vortex lattices, re-entrant Cooper pairing and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a single theoretical framework we explore how vortices and spin textures join to protect superconductivity against large magnetic fields. We use a rapidly rotating ultra-cold gas of fermionic atoms near unitarity as a model system amenable to experimental exploration, and discover a hierarchy of spin-polarized and FFLO phases in which a metal or a band-insulator of unpaired particles coexists with a spatially modulated superfluid hosting a vortex lattice. Quantum fluctuations can trans…
It has recently been shown that the spin-orbit coupling gives rise to topologically-nontrivial and thermodynamically-stable gapless superfluid phases when the pseudo-spin populations of an atomic Fermi gas is imbalanced, with the possibility of featuring Majorana zero-energy quasiparticles. In this paper, we consider a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling, and use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze a single vortex line along a finite cylinder with a periodic boundary condition. We show that the signatures for the appearance of core- and edge-bound states can be directly found in the dens…
We obtain a rigorous upper bound on the resistivity $ρ$ of an electron fluid whose electronic mean free path is short compared to the scale of spatial inhomogeneities. When such a hydrodynamic electron fluid supports a non-thermal diffusion process -- such as an imbalance mode between different bands -- we show that the resistivity bound becomes $ρ\lesssim A \, Γ$. The coefficient $A$ is independent of temperature and inhomogeneity lengthscale, and $Γ$ is a microscopic momentum-preserving scattering rate. In this way we obtain a unified and novel mechanism -- without umklapp -- for $ρ\sim T^2$…
Particle-vortex duality is a powerful theoretical tool that has been used to study bosonic systems. Here we propose an analogous duality for Dirac fermions in 2+1 dimensions. The physics of a single Dirac cone is proposed to be described by a dual theory, QED3 with a dual Dirac fermion coupled to a gauge field. This duality is established by considering two alternate descriptions of the 3d topological insulator (TI) surface. The first description is the usual Dirac cone surface state. The second description is accessed via an electric-magnetic duality of the bulk TI coupled to a gauge field, w…
Time-reversal invariant (TRI) Dirac and Weyl semimetals in three dimensions (3D) can host open Fermi arcs and spin-momentum locking Fermi loops on the surfaces. We find that when they become superconducting with $s$-wave pairing and the doping is lower than a critical level, straight $π$-flux vortex lines terminating at surfaces with Fermi arcs or spin-momentum locking Fermi loops can realize 1D topological superconductivity and harbor Majorana zero modes at their ends. Remarkably, we find that the vortex-generation-associated Zeeman field can open (when the surfaces have only Fermi arcs) or e…
