We present simultaneous measurements of Josephson inductance and DC transport characteristics of ballistic Josephson junctions based upon an epitaxial Al-InAs heterostructure. The Josephson inductance at finite current bias directly reveals the current-phase relation. The proximity-induced gap, the critical current and the average value of the transparency $\barτ$ are extracted without need for phase bias, demonstrating, e.g.,~a near-unity value of $\barτ=0.94$. Our method allows us to probe the devices deeply in the non-dissipative regime, where ordinary transport measurements are featureless. In perpendicular magnetic field the junctions show a nearly perfect Fraunhofer pattern of the critical current, which is insensitive to the value of $\barτ$. In contrast, the signature of supercurrent interference in the inductance turns out to be extremely sensitive to $\barτ$.
We simulate two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays, including full mutual- inductance effects, as they are cooled below the transition temperature in a magnetic field. We show numerical simulations of the array magnetization as a function of position, as detected by a scanning SQUID which is placed at a fixed height above the array. The calculated magnetization images show striking agreement with the experimental images obtained by A. Nielsen et al. The average array magnetization is found to be paramagnetic for many values of the applied field, confirming that paramagnetism can arise from …
We calculate the factor by which thermal phase fluctuations, as distinct from phase-slip fluctuations, increase the inductance, LJ, of a resistively-shunted Josephson junction (JJ) above its mean-field value, L0. We find that quantum mechanics suppresses fluctuations when T drops below a temperature, TQ = h/kBGL0, where G is the shunt conductance. Examination of the calculated sheet inductance, LA(T)/L0(T), of arrays of JJ's reveals that 2-D interconnections halve fluctuation effects, while reducing phase-slip effects by a much larger factor. Guided by these results, we calculate the sheet ind…
We have investigated the Josephson inductance $L_J$ of a Superconducting Cooper Pair Transistor (SCPT). We traced the inductance using microwave reflection measurements on a tuned resonance circuit in which a SCPT was mounted in parallel to a $ \sim 200$ pH strip line inductance. When the inverse of the Josephson inductance, determined on the charge-phase bias plane for a SCPT with a Josephson to Coulomb energy ratio of $E_J/E_C =1.75$, is integrated over the phase, we obtain a current-phase relation, which is strongly non-sinusoidal near the charge degeneracy point.
We present a theoretical study of the quantum dynamics of \textit{two} magnetic fluxons (MFs) trapped in Josephson junction parallel arrays (JJPAs) with large kinetic inductances. The Josephson phase distribution of two trapped MFs satisfies a topological constraint, i.e., a total variation of Josephson phases along a JJPA is $4π$. In such JJPAs the characteristic length of Josephson phase distribution ("the size" of MF) is drastically reduced to be less than a single cell size. Two extreme dynamic patterns will be distinguished: two weakly interacting MFs and two merged MFs, i.e., a $4π$-kink…
We show that the electrical impedance of a small-capacitance Josephson junction includes besides the capacitive term $-i/ωC_B$ also an inductive term $iωL_B$. Similar to the known Bloch capacitance $C_B(q)$, the Bloch inductance $L_B(q)$ also depends periodically on the quasicharge $q$, and its maximum value achieved at $q=e (\textrm{mod} 2e)$ always exceeds the value of the Josephson inductance of this junction $L_J(ϕ)$ at fixed $ϕ=0$. The effect of the Bloch inductance on the dynamics of a single junction and a one-dimensional array is described.
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of Josephson junction ladders. At variance with the well-known case of a one-dimensional (1D) parallel array of Josephson junctions the magnetic field patterns display a single minimum even for very low values of the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}$. Experiments performed changing both the geometrical value of the inductance and the critical current of the junctions show a good agreement with numerical simulations. We argue that the observed magnetic field patterns are due to a peculi…
We have designed and experimentally implemented a circuit of inductively-coupled superconducting charge qubits, where a Josephson junction is used as an inductance, and the coupling between the qubits is controlled by an applied magnetic flux. Spectroscopic measurements on the circuit are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. We observed anticrossings which originate from the coupling between the qubit and the plasma mode of the Josephson junction. Moreover, the size of the anticrossing depends on the external magnetic flux, which demonstrates the controllability of the coupling.
We propose a mesoscopic kinetic-inductance radiation detector based on a long superconductor--normal metal--superconductor Josephson junction. The operation of this proximity Josephson sensor (PJS) relies on large kinetic inductance variations under irradiation due to the exponential temperature dependence of the critical current. Coupled with a dc SQUID readout, the PJS is able to provide a signal to noise (S/N) ratio up to ~10^3 in the THz regime if operated as calorimeter, while electrical noise equivalent power (NEP) as low as ~7x10^{-20} W(Hz)^(-1/2) at 200 mK can be achieved in the bolom…
We discuss how to control dc Josephson current by influencing the structure and nonequilibrium population of Andreev levels via external electrostatic gates, external current injection and electromagnetic radiation. In particular we will consider the "giant" Josephson current in "long" SIS tunnel junctions and the regular and anomalous nonequilibrium Josephson currents in three terminal SNS junctions. We will briefly discuss applications to the Josephson field effect transistor (JOFET) and to the newly invented Josephson interference transistor (JOINT).
We propose tunable superconducting split-ring resonators (SRRs) employing nonlinear Josephson inductance. A fraction of SRR is replaced by Nb-AlOx-Nb Josephson tunnel junctions connected in parallel and forming a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), whose inductance is sensitive to the external dc magnetic field. Due to the lumped nature of the Josephson inductance, the SRR can be made very compact and its resonance frequency can be tuned by applying magnetic field. We present the model, results of extensive EM-simulation and experimental data for the SRR weakly coupled to a tr…
We study coherent current states in the mesoscopic superconducting weak link simultaneously subjected to the order parameter phase difference on the contact and to the tangential to the junction interface superfluid velocity in the banks. The Josephson current-phase relation controlled by the external transport current is obtained. At phase difference close to pi the nonlocal nature of the Josephson phase-dependent current results in the appearance of two vortexlike states in the vicinity of the contact.
Simultaneous breaking of inversion- and time-reversal symmetry in Josephson junction leads to a possible violation of the $I(φ)=-I(-φ)$ equality for the current-phase relation. This is known as anomalous Josephson effect and it produces a phase shift $φ_0$ in sinusoidal current-phase relations. In ballistic Josephson junctions with non-sinusoidal current phase relation the observed phenomenology is much richer, including the supercurrent diode effect and the magnetochiral anisotropy of Josephson inductance. In this work, we present measurements of both effects on arrays of Josephson junctions …
We propose a generalisation of dispersive qubit readout which provides the time evolution of a flux qubit observable. Our proposal relies on the non-linear coupling of the qubit to a harmonic oscillator with high frequency, representing a dc-SQUID. Information about the qubit dynamics is obtained by recording the oscillator response to resonant driving and subsequent lock-in detection. The measurement process is simulated for the example of coherent qubit oscillations. This corroborates the underlying measurement relation and also reveals that the measurement scheme possesses low backaction an…
The paper develops the theory of the ballistic SNS sandwich, in which the Josephson effect exists without the proximity effect. The theory takes into account restrictions imposed by the charge conservation law and the incommensurability of the superconducting gap with the Andreev level energy spacing. This resulted in revisions of some conclusions of previous works. In the one-dimensional case the Josephson phase of the ground state of the ballistic SNS sandwich is not necessarily zero but may have any value from 0 to $π$. If this value is $π$ this is a $π$ junction, which was well known befor…
The Cooper pair box qubit of SQUID configuration enables the readout of the qubit states by probing the effective Josephson inductance of the SQUID. This is realized by coupling the qubit to a tank circuit which induces a small alternating supercurrent in the SQUID loop. The effect of a small (but finite) geometrical inductance of the loop on the eigenstates of the system is figured out. The effect of qubit dephasing due to quadratic coupling to the tank circuit is evaluated. It is shown that the rate of dephasing in the vicinity of the magic points is relatively low unless the Josephson junct…
We analyze the dc Josephson effect in a ballistic superconductor/half-metal/superconductor junction by means of the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations. We study the role of spin-active interfaces and compare how different superconductor symmetries, including d-wave pairing, affect the Josephson current. We analyze the critical current as a function of junction width, temperature, and spin-flip strength and direction. In particular, we demonstrate that the temperature dependence of the supercurrent in the dxy symmetry case differs qualitatively from the s and dx2-y2 symmetries. Moreover, we have de…
In a recent paper, Filatrella et al. [Phys. Rev. B 75, 54510 (2007)] report results of numerical calculations of energy barriers for flux quanta propagation in two-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions with finite self and mutual inductances. To avoid complex numerical calculations, they use an approximated inductance model to address the effects of the mutual couplings. Using a full inductance matrix model, we show that this approximated model cannot be used to calculate the energy barrier of interacting vortices. The authors' method of comparison between numerical data and theoretical pr…
We study the dynamics of fully frustrated, underdamped Josephson arrays. Experiments reveal remarkable similarities among the dc current-voltage characteristics of several kinds of square and triangular arrays, where two resonant voltages are observed. Simulations indicate that a dynamical checkerboard solution underlies these similarities. By assuming such a solution, we reduce the governing equations to three coupled pendulum equations, and thereby calculate the voltages of the intrinsic resonances analytically.
We study the nonequilibrium Josephson current in a long two-dimensional ballistic SNS-junction with a normal reservoir coupled to the normal part of the junction. The current for a given superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ oscillates as a function of voltage applied between the normal reservoir and the SNS-junction. The period of the oscillations is $π\hbar v_F/L$, with $L$ the length of the junction, and the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $V^{-3/2}$ for $eV \gg \hbar v_{F}/L$ and zero temperature. The critical current $I_c$ shows a similar oscillating, decaying behavior as a functio…
We develop a general microscopic theory of dc Josephson effect in hybrid SNS structures with ballistic electrodes and spin-active NS interfaces. We establish a direct relation between the spectrum of Andreev levels and the Josephson current which contains complete information about non-trivial interplay between Andreev reflection and spin-dependent interface scattering. The system exhibits a rich structure of properties sensitive to spin-dependent barrier transmissions, spin-mixing angles, relative magnetization orientation of interfaces and the kinematic phase of scattered electrons. We analy…
We present a theoretical study of coherent quantum dynamics of a single magnetic fluxon (MF) trapped in Josephson junction parallel arrays (JJPAs) with large kinetic inductances. The MF is the topological excitation carrying one quantum of magnetic flux, $Φ_0$. The MF is quantitatively described as the $2π$-kink in the distribution of Josephson phases, and for JJPAs with high kinetic inductances the characteristic length of such distribution ("the size" of MF) is drastically reduced. Characterizing such MFs by the Josephson phases of three consecutive Josephson junctions we analyse the various…
We study Andreev reflection and the Josephson effect in a ballistic monolayer of black phosphorous, known as phosphorene. Due to the anisotropic band structure of this system, the supercurrent changes with an order of magnitude when comparing tunneling along two perpendicular directions in the monolayer. We show that the main reason for this effect is a large difference in the number of transverse modes in Andreev bound states. The oscillatory behavior of the supercurrent as a function of the length and chemical potential of the junction also differs substantially depending on the orientation …
We present a detailed study of nonequilibrium Josephson currents and conductance in ballistic multiterminal SNS-devices. Nonequilibrium is created by means of quasiparticle injection from a normal reservoir connected to the normal part of the junction. By applying a voltage at the normal reservoir the Josephson current can be suppressed or the direction of the current can be reversed. For a junction longer than the thermal length, $L\ggξ_T$, the nonequilibrium current increases linearly with applied voltage, saturating at a value equal to the equilibrium current of a short junction. The conduc…
The stationary Josephson effect is studied theoretically in the situation when there is externally injected transport supercurrent which flows in the banks parallel to the contact interface. Coexistence of this supercurrent with the order parameter phase difference between the banks of the contact results in the appearance of quasiparticles in the weak link, which create the current, localized in the vicinity of the contact and counter-flowing to the transport supercurrent. We review the results of our previous study of weak links between current-carrying conventional and unconventional (d-wav…
We present a numerical and analytic study of the influence of the passive region on fluxon dynamics in a window junction. We examine the effect of the extension of the passive region and its electromagnetic characteristics, its surface inductance and capacitance. When the velocity in the passive region $v_{I}$ is equal to the Swihart velocity (1) a one dimensional model describes well the operation of the device. When $v_{I}$ is different from 1, the fluxon adapts its velocity to $v_{I}$. In both cases we give simple formulas for the position of the limiting voltage of the zero field steps. La…
We investigated current-voltage characteristics of unshunted and externally shunted Josephson junctions (JJs) with high critical current densities, Jc, in order to extract their basic parameters and statistical characteristics for JJ modeling in superconducting integrated circuits and to assess their potential for future technology nodes. Nb/AlOx-Al/Nb JJs with diameters from 0.5 μm to 6 μm were fabricated using a fully planarized process with Mo or MoNx thin-film shunt resistors with sheet resistance Rsq = 2 Ω/sq and Rsq = 6 Ω/sq, respectively. We used our standard MIT LL process SFQ5ee to fa…
The microscopic theory of current carrying states in the ballistic superconducting microchannel is presented. The effects of the contact length L on the Josephson current are investigated. For the temperatures T close to the critical temperature T_c the problem is treated selfconsistently, with taking into account the distribution of the order parameter $Δ(r)$ inside the contact. The closed integral equation for $Δ$ in strongly inhomogeneous microcontact geometry ($L\lesssim ξ_{0}, ξ_{0}$ is the coherence length at T=0) replaces the differential Ginzburg-Landau equation. The critical current $…
We study quantum transport in ballistic $s_\pm$-wave superconductors where coupling between the two bands is included, and apply our model to three possible probes for detecting the internal phase shift of such a pairing state: tunneling spectroscopy in a N$|s_\pm$-wave junction, crossed Andreev reflection in a two-lead N$|s_\pm$-wave$|$N system, and Josephson current in a s-wave$|$I$|s_\pm$-wave Josephson junction. Whereas the first two probes are insensitive to the superconducting phase in the absence of interband coupling, the Josephson effect is intrinsically phase-dependent, and is moreov…
We study microwave properties of a superconducting tunable coplanar waveguide (CPW). Pairs of Josephson junctions are forming superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which shunt the central conductor of the CPW. The Josephson inductance of the SQUIDs is varied in the range of 0.08-0.5 nH by applying an external dc magnetic field. The central conductor of the CPW contains Josephson junctions connected in series that provide extra inductances; the magnetic field controlling the SQUIDs is weak enough not to influence the inductance of the chain of the single junctions. The circuit …
We present fully self-consistent calculations of the thermodynamic properties of three-dimensional clean SNS Josephson junctions, where S is an s-wave short-coherence-length superconductor and N is a clean normal metal. The junction is modeled on an infinite cubic lattice such that the transverse width of the S is the same as that of the N, and its thickness is tuned from the short to long limit. Both the reduced order parameter near the SN boundary and the short coherence length depress the critical Josephson current $I_c$, even in short junctions. This is contrasted with recent measurements …
The macroscopic quantum interference effects in ballistic Josephson microstructures are investigated. The studied system consists of four bulk superconductors (terminals) which are weakly coupled through the mesoscopic rectangular normal metal (two dimensional electron gas). We show that nonlocal electrodynamics of ballistic systems leads to specific current-phase relations for the mesoscopic multiterminal Josephson junction. The nonlocal coupling of supercurrents produces the "dragging" effect for phases of the superconducting order parameter in different terminals. The composite Josephson ju…
By improving resolution of home-made mutual-inductance measurements technique, a pronounced step-like structure (with the number of steps n=4 for all AC fields) has been observed in the temperature dependence of AC susceptibility in artificially prepared two-dimensional Josephson Junction Arrays (2D-JJA) of unshunted Nb-AlO_x-Nb junctions with β_L(4.2K)=30. Using a single-plaquette approximation of the overdamped 2D-JJA model, we were able to successfully fit our data assuming that steps are related to the geometric properties of the plaquette. The number of steps n corresponds to the number o…
We calculate the phase, the temperature and the junction length dependence of the supercurrent for ballistic graphene Josephson-junctions. For low temperatures we find non-sinusoidal dependence of the supercurrent on the superconductor phase difference for both short and long junctions. The skewness, which characterizes the deviation of the current-phase relation from a simple sinusoidal one, shows a linear dependence on the critical current for small currents. We discuss the similarities and differences with respect to the classical theory of Josephson junctions, where the weak link is formed…
The charge-phase Josephson qubit based on a superconducting single charge transistor inserted in a low-inductance superconducting loop is considered. The loop is inductively coupled to a radio-frequency driven tank circuit enabling the readout of the qubit states by measuring the effective Josephson inductance of the transistor. The effect of qubit dephasing and relaxation due to electric and magnetic control lines as well as the measuring system is evaluated. Recommendations for operation of the qubit in magic points producing minimum decoherence are given.
We have simulated the performance of the Josephson Travelling Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA) based on the one-dimensional array of RF SQUIDs. Unlike the ideal model in which all SQUIDs are assumed to be identical, we allowed variation of the device parameters such as the geometric inductance of the SQUID loop, capacitance to ground, Josephson junction capacitance and critical current. Our simulations confirm the negative effects of variation of the device parameters leading to microwave reflections between individual cells and the shift of the flux bias from the optimal point. The strongest…
We use a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism to self-consistently calculate the proximity effect, Josephson current, and local density of states in ballistic graphene SNS Josephson junctions. Both short and long junctions, with respect to the superconducting coherence length, are considered, as well as different doping levels of the graphene. We show that self-consistency does not notably change the current-phase relationship derived earlier for short junctions using the non-selfconsistent Dirac-BdG formalism but predict a significantly increased critical current with a stronger…
We present analytical and numerical studies of pinned superconducting states of open-ended Josephson ladder arrays, neglecting inductances but taking edge effects into account. Treating the edge effects perturbatively, we find analytical approximations for three of these superconducting states -- the no-vortex, fully-frustrated and single-vortex states -- as functions of the dc bias current $I$ and the frustration $f$. Bifurcation theory is used to derive formulas for the depinning currents and critical frustrations at which the superconducting states disappear or lose dynamical stability as $…
The dependence of sheet impedance of a Josephson junction array on the applied magnetic field is investigated in the regime when vortex diffusion between array plaquettes is effectively frozen due to low enough temperature. The field dependent contribution to sheet inductance is found to be proportional to f*ln(1/f), where f<<1 is the magnitude of the field expressed in terms of flux quanta per plaquette.
Employing mutual-inductance measurements we study the magnetic field dependence of complex AC susceptibility of artificially prepared highly ordered (periodic) two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays of unshunted Nb-AlO_x-Nb junctions. The observed behavior can be explained assuming single-plaquette approximation of the overdamped model with an inhomogeneous critical current distribution within a single junction.
One of the consequences of Cooper pairs having a finite momentum in the interlayer of a Josephson junction, is $π$-junction behavior. The finite momentum can either be due to an exchange field in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions, or due to the Zeeman effect. Here, we report the observation of Zeeman effect induced 0-$π$ transitions in Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$, 3D Dirac semimetal-based Josephson junctions. The large g-factor of the Zeeman effect from a magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction allows tuning of the Josephson junctions from 0- to $π$- regimes. This is revealed by sign changes …
Highly transmissive ballistic junctions are demonstrated between Nb and the two-dimensional electron gas formed at an InAs/AlSb heterojunction. A reproducible fabrication protocol is presented yielding high critical supercurrent values. Current-voltage characteristics were measured down to 0.4 K and the observed supercurrent behavior was analyzed within a ballistic model in the clean limit. This investigation allows us to demonstrate an intrinsic interface transmissivity approaching 90%. The reproducibility of the fabrication protocol makes it of interest for the experimental study of InAs-bas…
Using a single-plaquette approximation, novel magnetoinductance effects in Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) are predicted, including the appearance of steps in the temperature behavior of magnetic susceptibility. The number of steps (as well as their size) is controlled by the kinetic inductance of the plaquette whose field dependence is governed by the Abrikosov vortices penetrating superconducting regions of the array. The experimental conditions under which the predicted effects should manifest themselves in artificially prepared JJAs are discussed.
We study a Josephson junction made with a spin-textured bridge, when both Rashba and Zeeman interactions combine to generate a magneto-electric coupling between the superconducting current and the in-plane magnetic texture in the normal region. In particular, we unambiguously obtain the so-called anomalous current-phase relation $j=j_{c}\sinφ+j_{a}\cosφ$ in a two-dimensional ballistic Josephson junction close to the critical temperature of the heterostructure, when an anomalous current $j_{a}\neq0$ subsists even at zero phase-difference between the superconductors, and is responsible for the c…
Josephson junctions with graphene as the weak link between superconductors have been intensely studied in recent years, with respect to both fundamental physics and potential applications. However, most of the previous work was based on mechanically exfoliated graphene, which is not compatible with mass production. Here we present our research using graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) as the weak link of Josephson junctions. We demonstrate that CVD-graphene-based Josephson junctions with Nb electrodes can work effectively without any thermal hysteresis from 1.5 K down to a base …
We discuss the applied magnetic field dependence of the absorption of microwaves by a 3-dimensional array up to 30x30x30 Josephson junctions with random parameters including the resistivity, capacity and inductance of each junction. The numerical simulation results for the networks show characteristic microwave absorption anomalies observed in the ceramic samples of high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-x). We also provide a discussion of the absorption in simple analytical terms of Josephson loop instabilities.
We propose a method to excite and detect a rotor localized mode (rotobreather) in a Josephson-junction array biased by dc currents. In our numerical studies of the dynamics we have used experimentally realizable parameters and included self-inductances. We have uncovered two families of rotobreathers. Both types are stable under thermal fluctuations and exist for a broad range of array parameters and sizes including arrays as small as a single plaquette. We suggest a single Josephson-junction plaquette as an ideal system to experimentally investigate these solutions.
Utilizing a full microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) approach, we study the equilibrium charge and spin currents in ballistic $SFSFS$ Josephson systems, where $F$ is a uniformly magnetized ferromagnet and $S$ is a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. From the spatially varying spin currents, we also calculate the associated equilibrium spin transfer torques. Through variations in the relative phase differences between the three $S$ regions, and magnetization orientations of the ferromagnets, our study demonstrates tunability and controllability of the spin and charge supercurrents. The spi…
The purpose of this work is to compare the dynamics of arrays of Josephson junctions in presence of magnetic field in two different frameworks: the so called XY frustrated model with no self inductance and an approach that takes into account the screening currents (considering self inductances only). We show that while for a range of parameters the simpler model is sufficiently accurate, in a region of the parameter space solutions arise that are not contained in the XY model equations.
We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of coherent current transport in wide ballistic superconductor-two dimensional electron gas-superconductor junctions. It is found experimentally that upon increasing the junction length, the subharmonic gap structure in the current-voltage characteristics is shifted to lower voltages, and the excess current at voltages much larger than the superconducting gap decreases. Applying a theory of coherent multiple Andreev reflection, we show that these observations can be explained in terms of transport through Andreev resonances.
