The paper develops the theory of the ballistic SNS sandwich, in which the Josephson effect exists without the proximity effect. The theory takes into account restrictions imposed by the charge conservation law and the incommensurability of the superconducting gap with the Andreev level energy spacing. This resulted in revisions of some conclusions of previous works. In the one-dimensional case the Josephson phase of the ground state of the ballistic SNS sandwich is not necessarily zero but may have any value from 0 to $π$. If this value is $π$ this is a $π$ junction, which was well known before. The suppression of the supercurrent at temperatures on the order or higher than the Andreev level energy spacing, which was predicted in previous investigations, does not take place in the one-dimensional case.
At zero temperature the ballistic SNS sandwich of any dimensionality is not a weak link. This leads to unusual properties: the absence of the Josephson plasma mode localized at the normal layer and the Meisner effect with the same London penetration depth in the normal and the superconducting layers.
We study the nonequilibrium Josephson current in a long two-dimensional ballistic SNS-junction with a normal reservoir coupled to the normal part of the junction. The current for a given superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ oscillates as a function of voltage applied between the normal reservoir and the SNS-junction. The period of the oscillations is $π\hbar v_F/L$, with $L$ the length of the junction, and the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $V^{-3/2}$ for $eV \gg \hbar v_{F}/L$ and zero temperature. The critical current $I_c$ shows a similar oscillating, decaying behavior as a functio…
We present fully self-consistent calculations of the thermodynamic properties of three-dimensional clean SNS Josephson junctions, where S is an s-wave short-coherence-length superconductor and N is a clean normal metal. The junction is modeled on an infinite cubic lattice such that the transverse width of the S is the same as that of the N, and its thickness is tuned from the short to long limit. Both the reduced order parameter near the SN boundary and the short coherence length depress the critical Josephson current $I_c$, even in short junctions. This is contrasted with recent measurements …
We present a detailed study of nonequilibrium Josephson currents and conductance in ballistic multiterminal SNS-devices. Nonequilibrium is created by means of quasiparticle injection from a normal reservoir connected to the normal part of the junction. By applying a voltage at the normal reservoir the Josephson current can be suppressed or the direction of the current can be reversed. For a junction longer than the thermal length, $L\ggξ_T$, the nonequilibrium current increases linearly with applied voltage, saturating at a value equal to the equilibrium current of a short junction. The conduc…
Andreev bound states in clean, ballistic SNS and SNSNS junctions are calculated exactly and by using the Andreev approximation (AA). The AA appears to break down for junctions with transverse dimensions chosen such that the motion in the longitudinal direction is very slow. The doubly degenerate states typical for the traveling waves found in the AA are replaced by two standing waves in the exact treatment and the degeneracy is lifted. A multiple-scattering Green's function formalism is used, from which the states are found through the local density of states. The scattering by the interfaces …
We investigate the Josephson critical current $I_c(Φ)$ of a wide superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction as a function of the magnetic flux $Φ$ threading it. Electronic trajectories reflected from the side edges alter the function $I_c(Φ)$ as compared to the conventional Fraunhofer-type dependence. At weak magnetic fields, $B\lesssim Φ_0/d^2$, the edge effect lifts zeros in $I_c(Φ)$ and gradually shifts the minima of that function toward half-integer multiples of the flux quantum. At $B>Φ_0/d^2$, the edge effect leads to an accelerated decay of the critical current $I_c(Φ)$ w…
We use a tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism to self-consistently calculate the proximity effect, Josephson current, and local density of states in ballistic graphene SNS Josephson junctions. Both short and long junctions, with respect to the superconducting coherence length, are considered, as well as different doping levels of the graphene. We show that self-consistency does not notably change the current-phase relationship derived earlier for short junctions using the non-selfconsistent Dirac-BdG formalism but predict a significantly increased critical current with a stronger…
$ $The critical current of a Josephson junction is an oscillatory function of the enclosed magnetic flux $Φ$, because of quantum interference modulated with periodicity $h/2e$. We calculate these Fraunhofer oscillations in a two-dimensional (2D) ballistic superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) junction. For a Fermi circle the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $1/Φ$ or faster. If the Fermi circle is strongly warped, as it is on a square lattice near the band center, we find that the amplitude decays slower $\propto 1/\sqrtΦ$ when the magnetic length $l_m=\sqrt{\hbar/eB}$ drops…
We present a theoretical analysis of the current-voltage characteristics of a ballistic superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junction, in which a strip of graphene is coupled to two superconducting electrodes. We focus in the short-junction regime, where the length of the strip is much smaller than superconducting coherence length. We show that the differential conductance exhibits a very rich subharmonic gap structure which can be modulated by means of a gate voltage. On approaching the Dirac point the conductance normalized by the normal-state conductance is identical to that of a shor…
We discuss how to control dc Josephson current by influencing the structure and nonequilibrium population of Andreev levels via external electrostatic gates, external current injection and electromagnetic radiation. In particular we will consider the "giant" Josephson current in "long" SIS tunnel junctions and the regular and anomalous nonequilibrium Josephson currents in three terminal SNS junctions. We will briefly discuss applications to the Josephson field effect transistor (JOFET) and to the newly invented Josephson interference transistor (JOINT).
Employing quasiclassical theory of superconductivity combined with Keldysh technique we investigate large thermoelectric effect in multiterminal ballistic normal-superconducting (NS) hybrid structures. We argue that this effect is caused by electron-hole asymmetry generated by coherent Andreev reflection of quasiparticles at interfaces of two different superconductors with non-zero phase difference. Within our model we derive a general expression for thermoelectric voltages $V_{T1,2}$ induced in two different normal terminals exposed to a thermal gradient. Our results apply at any temperature …
We develop a general microscopic theory of dc Josephson effect in hybrid SNS structures with ballistic electrodes and spin-active NS interfaces. We establish a direct relation between the spectrum of Andreev levels and the Josephson current which contains complete information about non-trivial interplay between Andreev reflection and spin-dependent interface scattering. The system exhibits a rich structure of properties sensitive to spin-dependent barrier transmissions, spin-mixing angles, relative magnetization orientation of interfaces and the kinematic phase of scattered electrons. We analy…
The incoherent regime of Multiple Andreev Reflections (MAR) is studied in long diffusive SNS junctions at applied voltages larger than the Thouless energy. Incoherent MAR is treated as a transport problem in energy space by means of a circuit theory for an equivalent electrical network. The current through NS interfaces is explained in terms of diffusion flows of electrons and holes through tunnel and Andreev resistors. These resistors in diffusive junctions play roles analogous to the normal and Andreev reflection coefficients in OTBK theory for ballistic junctions. The theory is applied to t…
We show that in {\em ballistic} mesoscopic SNS junctions the period of critical current vs. magnetic flux dependence (magnetic interference pattern), $I_c(Φ)$, changes {\em continuously and non-monotonically} from $Φ_0$ to $2Φ_0$ as the length-to-width ratio of the junction grows, or temperature drops. In {\em diffusive} mesoscopic junctions the change is even more drastic, with the first zero of $I_c(Φ)$ appearing at $3Φ_0$. The effect is a manifestation of nonlocal relation between the supercurrent density and superfluid velocity in the normal part of the system, with the characteristic scal…
Despite several theoretical approaches describing multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) effect in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction are elaborated, the problem of comprehensive and adequate description of MAR is highly actual. In particular, a broadening parameter $Γ$ is still unaccounted at all, whereas a ballistic condition (the mean free path for inelastic scattering $l$ to the barrier width $d$ ratio) is considered only in the framework of Kümmel, Gunsenheimer, and Nikolsky (KGN), as well as Gunsenheimer-Zaikin approaches, for an isotropic case and fully-transparent co…
We study the Josephson current through a ballistic normal metal layer of thickness $D$ on which two superconducting electrodes are deposited within a distance $L$ of each other. In the presence of an ({\it in-layer}) magnetic field we find that the oscillations of the critical current $I_c(Φ)$ with the magnetic flux $Φ$ are significantly different from an ordinary magnetic interference pattern. Depending on the ratio $L/D$ and temperature, $I_c(Φ)$-oscillations can have a period smaller than flux quantum $Φ_0$, nonzero minima and damping rate much smaller than $1/Φ$. Similar anomalous magnetic…
We solve the Dirac-Bogoliubov-De-Gennes equation in an impurity-free superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junction, to determine the maximal supercurrent that can flow through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped superconducting electrodes. The result is determined by the superconducting gap and by the aspect ratio of the junction (length L, small relative to the width W and to the superconducting coherence length). Moving away from the Dirac point of zero doping, we recover the usual ballistic result in which the Fermi wave length takes over from L. The product of critical cu…
The Josephson Effect and Superconducting Proximity Effect were observed in Superconductor -Graphene-Superconductor (SGS) Josephson junctions with coherence lengths comparable to the distance between the superconducting leads. By comparing the measured temperature and doping dependence of the supercurrent and the proximity induced sub-gap features (multiple Andreev reflections) to theoretical predictions we find that, contrary to expectations, the ballistic transport model fails to describe the SGS junctions. In contrast, the diffusive junction model yields close quantitative agreement with the…
Motivated by a recent experiment directly measuring the current-phase relation (CPR) in graphene under the influence of a superconducting proximity effect, we here study the temperature dependence of the CPR in ballistic graphene SNS Josephson junctions within the the self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism. By comparing these results with the standard Dirac-BdG method, where rigid boundary conditions are assumed at the SN interfaces, we show on a crucial importance of both proximity effect and depairing by current for the CPR. The proximity effect grows with tempera…
Ballistic Josephson junctions are studied in the presence of a spin-splitting field and spin-orbit coupling. A generic expression for the quasi-classical Green's function is obtained and with its help we analyze several aspects of the proximity effect between a spin-textured normal metal (N) and singlet superconductors (S). In particular, we show that the density of states may show a zero-energy peak which is a generic consequence of the spin-dependent couplings in heterostructures. In addition we also obtain the spin current and the induced magnetic moment in a SNS structure and discuss possi…
A Josephson junction made of a generic magnetic material sandwiched between two conventional superconductors is studied in the ballistic semi-classic limit. The spectrum of Andreev bound states is obtained from the single-valuedness of a particle-hole spinor over closed orbits generated by electron-hole reflections at the interfaces between superconducting and normal materials. The semiclassical quantization condition is shown to depend only on the angle mismatch between initial and final spin directions along such closed trajectories. For the demonstration, an Andreev-Wilson loop in the compo…
Superconductor/normal conductor/superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions with highly transparent interfaces are predicted to show significant deviations from sinusoidal supercurrent-phase relationships (CPR) at low temperatures. We investigate experimentally the CPR of a ballistic Nb/InAs(2DES)/Nb junction in the temperature range from 1.3 K to 9 K using a modified Rifkin-Deaver method. The CPR is obtained from the inductance of the phase-biased junction. Transport measurements complement the investigation. At low temperatures, substantial deviations of the CPR from conventional tunnel-junctio…
We consider a Josephson contact mediated by 1D chiral modes on a surface of a 3D topological insulator with superimposed superconducting and magnetic layers. The system represents an interferometer in which 1D chiral Majorana modes on the boundaries of superconducting electrodes are linked by ballistic chiral Dirac channels. We investigate the noise of the Josephson current as a function of the dc phase bias and the Aharonov-Bohm flux. Starting from the scattering formalism, a Majorana representation of the Keldysh generating action for cumulants of the transmitted charge is found. At temperat…

We consider the charge and spin effects in low dimensional superconducting weak links. The first part of the review deals with the effects of electron-electron interaction in Superconductor/Luttinger liquid/Superconductor junctions. The experimental realization of this mesoscopic hybrid system can be the individual single wall carbon nanotube that bridges the gap between two bulk superconductors. The dc Josephson current through a Luttinger liquid in the limits of perfectly and poorly transmitting junctions is evaluated. The relationship between the Josephson effect in a long SNS junction and …
The problem of Josephson current through Coulomb-blocked nanoscale superconductor-normal-superconductor structure with tunnel contacts is reconsidered. Two different contributions to the phase-biased supercurrent are identified, which are dominant in the limits of weak and strong Coulomb interaction. Full expression for the free energy valid at arbitrary Coulomb strength is found. The current derived from this free energy interpolates between known results for weak and strong Coulomb interaction as phase bias changes from 0 to pi. In the broad range of Coulomb strength the current-phase relati…
Made of a thin non-superconducting metal (N) sandwiched by two superconductors (S), SNS Josephson junctions enable novel quantum functionalities by mixing up the intrinsic electronic properties of N with the superconducting correlations induced from S by proximity. Electronic properties of these devices are governed by Andreev quasiparticles [1] which are absent in conventional SIS junctions whose insulating barrier (I) between the two S electrodes owns no electronic states. Here we focus on the Josephson vortex (JV) motion inside Nb-Cu-Nb proximity junctions subject to electric currents and m…
We determine, using a self consistent method, the charge and spin currents in ballistic Josephson junctions consisting of ferromagnetic ($F$) layers sandwiched between superconducting ($S$) electrodes ($SFS$-type junctions). When there are two $F$ layers, we also consider the experimentally relevant configuration where a normal ($N$) nonmagnetic spacer layer separates them. We study the current-phase relationships as functions of geometrical parameters that are accessible experimentally including the angles that characterize the relative orientation of the magnetization in the $F$ layers. Our …
We report on a self-consistent microscopic study of the DC Josephson effect in $SINIS$ junctions where screened dipole layers at the $SN$ interfaces generate a double-barrier multilayered $SIN$ structure. Our approach starts from a microscopic Hamiltonian defined on a simple cubic lattice, with an attractive Hubbard term accounting for the short coherence length superconducting order in the semi-infinite leads, and a spatially extended charge distribution (screened dipole layer) induced by the difference in Fermi energies of the superconductor $S$ and the clean normal metal interlayer $N$. By …
Superconductivity, discovered by Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911, continues to be a fascinating subject of condensed matter physics today. Much interest has been devoted to the study of the superconductivity induced in a metal which by itself is not superconducting but is in electrical contact with a superconductor. As the carriers of superconductivity, the Cooper pairs, diffuse across the contact into the metal they remain correlated, although the pairing mechanism is lifted; we call this the proximity effect. The observation of these superconducting correlations has come within the reach of experim…
