We propose a mesoscopic kinetic-inductance radiation detector based on a long superconductor--normal metal--superconductor Josephson junction. The operation of this proximity Josephson sensor (PJS) relies on large kinetic inductance variations under irradiation due to the exponential temperature dependence of the critical current. Coupled with a dc SQUID readout, the PJS is able to provide a signal to noise (S/N) ratio up to ~10^3 in the THz regime if operated as calorimeter, while electrical noise equivalent power (NEP) as low as ~7x10^{-20} W(Hz)^(-1/2) at 200 mK can be achieved in the bolometer operation. The high performance together with the ease of fabrication make this structure attractive as an ultrasensitive cryogenic detector of THz electromagnetic radiation.
We have investigated the Josephson inductance $L_J$ of a Superconducting Cooper Pair Transistor (SCPT). We traced the inductance using microwave reflection measurements on a tuned resonance circuit in which a SCPT was mounted in parallel to a $ \sim 200$ pH strip line inductance. When the inverse of the Josephson inductance, determined on the charge-phase bias plane for a SCPT with a Josephson to Coulomb energy ratio of $E_J/E_C =1.75$, is integrated over the phase, we obtain a current-phase relation, which is strongly non-sinusoidal near the charge degeneracy point.
We suggest a single-photon thermal detector based on the abrupt jump of the critical current of a temperature-biased tunnel Josephson junction formed by different superconductors, working in the dissipationless regime. The electrode with the lower critical temperature is used as radiation sensing element, so it is kept thermally floating and is connected to an antenna. The warming up resulting from the absorption of a photon can induce a drastic measurable enhancement of the critical current of the junction. We propose a detection scheme based on a threshold mechanism for single- or multi-phot…
We report a theoretical study of the low-frequency impedance of a Josephson junction chain whose parameters vary in space. Our goal is to find the optimal spatial profile which maximizes the total inductance of the chain without shrinking the low-frequency window where the chain behaves as an inductor. If the spatial modulation is introduced by varying the junction areas, we find that the best result is obtained for a spatially homogeneous chain, reported earlier in the literature. An improvement over the homogeneous result can be obtained by representing the junctions by SQUIDs with different…
We report development and microwave characterization of rf SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) qubits, consisting of an aluminium-based Josephson junction embedded in a superconducting loop patterned from a thin film of TiN with high kinetic inductance. Here we demonstrate that the systems can offer small physical size, high anharmonicity, and small scatter of device parameters. The hybrid devices can be utilized as tools to shed further light onto the origin of film dissipation and decoherence in phase-slip nanowire qubits, patterned entirely from disordered superconducting fi…
Light-matter interaction in optomechanical systems is the foundation for ultra-sensitive detection schemes [1,2] as well as the generation of phononic and photonic quantum states [3-10]. Electromechanical systems realize this optomechanical interaction in the microwave regime. In this context, capacitive coupling arrangements demonstrated interaction rates of up to 280 Hz [11]. Complementary, early proposals [12-15] and experiments [16,17] suggest that inductive coupling schemes are tunable and have the potential to reach the vacuum strong-coupling regime. Here, we follow the latter approach b…
The design for an inductive superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor with enhanced performance, the L-SQUIPT, is presented and analyzed. The interferometer is based on a double-loop structure, where each ring comprises a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor mesoscopic Josephson weak-link and the read-out electrode is implemented in the form of a superconducting tunnel probe. Our design allows both to improve the coupling of the transistor to the external magnetic field and to increase the characteristic magnetic flux transfer functions, thereby leading to an improved ult…
Data are presented on mutual and self-inductance of various inductors used in multilayered superconductor integrated circuits: microstrips and striplines with widths of signal traces from 250 nm to a few micrometers, located on the same circuit layer at various distances from each other (from 250 nm to a few micrometers) and/or on different layers spaced vertically; effect of long slits in the ground plane(s) along the inductors on their mutual inductance; inductance of right-angled bends; inductance of meanders. Simple analytical expressions for mutual and self-inductance of the basic inducto…
Sensitive photon detection in the gigahertz band constitutes the cornerstone to study different phenomena in astronomy, such as radio burst sources, galaxy formation, cosmic microwave background, axions, comets, gigahertz-peaked spectrum radio sources and supermassive black holes. Nowadays, state of the art detectors for astrophysics are mainly based on transition edge sensors and kinetic inductance detectors. Overall, most sensible nanobolometers so far are superconducting detectors showing a noise equivalent power (NEP) as low as 2x10-20 W/Hz1/2. Yet, fast thermometry at the nanoscale was de…
Cavity optomechanics is showing promise for studying quantum mechanics in large systems. However, smallness of the radiation-pressure coupling is a serious hindrance. Here we show how the charge tuning of the Josephson inductance in a single-Cooper-pair transistor (SCPT) can be exploited to arrange a strong radiation pressure -type coupling $g_0$ between mechanical and microwave resonators. In a certain limit of parameters, such a coupling can also be seen as a qubit-mediated coupling of two resonators. We show that this scheme allows reaching extremely high $g_0$. Contrary to the recent propo…
We present the design, measurement and analysis of a current sensor based on a process of Josephson parametric upconversion in a superconducting microwave cavity. Terminating a coplanar waveguide with a nanobridge constriction Josephson junction, we observe modulation sidebands from the cavity that enable highly sensitive, frequency-multiplexed output of small currents for applications such as transition-edge sensor array readout. We derive an analytical model to reproduce the measurements over a wide range of bias currents, detunings and input powers. Tuning the frequency of the cavity by mor…
