We study log Calabi-Yau varieties obtained as a blow-up of a toric variety along hypersurfaces in its toric boundary. Mirrors to such varieties are constructed by Gross-Siebert from a canonical scattering diagram built by using punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. We show that there is a piecewise linear isomorphism between the canonical scattering diagram and a scattering diagram defined algortihmically, following a higher dimensional generalisation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman construction. We deduce that the punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of the log Calabi-Yau variety can be captured from this algorithmic construction. As a particular example, we compute these invariants for a non-toric blow-up of the three dimensional projective space along two lines. This generalizes previous results of Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert on "The Tropical Vertex" to higher dimensions.
In this thesis we study the relation between scattering diagrams and deformations of holomorphic pairs, building on a recent work of Chan--Conan Leung--Ma. The new feature is the extended tropical vertex group where the scattering diagrams are defined. In addition, the extended tropical vertex provides interesting applications: on one hand we get a geometric interpretation of the wall-crossing formulas for coupled $2d$-$4d$ systems, previously introduced by Gaiotto--Moore--Neitzke. On the other hand, Gromov--Witten invariants of toric surfaces relative to their boundary divisor appear in the c…
Elements of the tropical vertex group, introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman, are formal families of symplectomorphisms of the 2-dimensional algebraic torus. We prove ordered product factorizations in the tropical vertex group are equivalent to calculations of certain genus 0 relative Gromov-Witten invariants of toric surfaces. The relative invariants which arise have full tangency to a toric divisor at a single unspecified point. The method uses scattering diagrams, tropical curve counts, degeneration formulas, and exact multiple cover calculations in orbifold Gromov-Witten theory.
Elements of the tropical vertex group are formal families of symplectomorphisms of the 2-dimensional algebraic torus. Commutators in the group are related to Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of quiver representations and the Gromov-Witten theory of toric surfaces. After a short survey of the subject (based on lectures of Pandharipande at the 2009 Geometry summer school in Lisbon), we prove new results about the rays and symmetries of scattering diagrams of commutators (including previous conjectures by Gross-Siebert and Kontsevich). Where possible, we present both the quiver and Grom…
We address the problem of existence of refined (i.e., depending on a formal parameter) tropical enumerative invariants, and we present two new examples of a refined count of rational marked tropical curves. One of the new invariants counts plane rational tropical curves with an unmarked vertex of arbitrary valency. It was motivated by the tropical enumeration of plane cuspidal tropical curves given by Y. Ganor and the author, which naturally led to consideration of plane tropical curves with an unmarked four-valent vertex. Another refined invariant counts rational tropical curves of a given de…
Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert have shown that the 2-dimensional Kontsevich-Soibelman scattering diagrams compute certain genus zero log Gromov-Witten invariants of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. We show that the $q$-refined 2-dimensional Kontsevich-Soibelman scattering diagrams compute, after the change of variables $q=e^{i \hbar}$, generating series of certain higher genus log Gromov-Witten invariants of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. This result provides a mathematically rigorous realization of the physical derivation of the refined wall-crossing formula from topological string theory proposed by Cecotti-…
In this paper, we study tropicalisations of families of curves with a singularity in a fixed point. The tropicalisation of such a family is a linear tropical variety. We describe its maximal dimensional cones using results about linear tropical varieties from Ardila and Klivans and from Feichtner and Sturmfels. We show that a singularity tropicalises either to a vertex of higher valence or of higher multiplicity, or to an edge of higher weight. We then classify maximal dimensional types of singular tropical curves. For those, the singularity is either a crossing of two edges, or a 3-valent ver…
In this text, we show that locally tropically convex tropical varieties in $\mathbb{R}^n$ have locally a canonical polyhedral structure that satisfies higher balancing conditions at all cells of positive codimension.
A tropical curve in $\mathbb R^{3}$ contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants in all genus. Nevertheless, we present a simple formula for how a given tropical curve contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants when we encode these invariants in a generating function with exponents of $λ$ recording Euler characteristic. Our main modification from the known tropical correspondence formula for rational curves is as follows: a trivalent vertex, which before contributed a factor of $n$ to the count of zero-genus holomorphic curves, contributes a factor of $2\sin(nλ/2)$. We explain how to calculate relativ…
We introduce the tropicalization of closed subschemes of a torus defined over a higher dimensional local field. We study the basic invariants of such tropicalizations. This is a generalization of the results of Einslieder, Kapranov, Lind, Speyer and Sturmfels to higher local fields.
We show that the tropicalization of an irreducible d-dimensional variety over a field of characteristic 0 is (d-l)-connected through codimension one, where l is the dimension of the lineality space of the tropicalization. From this we obtain a higher connectivity result for skeleta of rational polytopes. We also prove a tropical analogue of the Bertini Theorem: the intersection of the tropicalization of an irreducible variety with a generic hyperplane is again the tropicalization of an irreducible variety.
We consider the variation of tropical Hodge structure (TVHS) associated to families of tropical varieties. The family of the tropical intermediate Jacobians of the associated tropical Hodge structure defines a bundle of tropical Jacobians, whose sections we call the tropical normal functions. We define formal sequential derivatives of these functions on the base with respect to the natural Gauss-Manin connection as the Hodge theoretic invariants detecting tropical cycles in the fibers. The associated invariants which are defined inductively are the higher Abel-Jacobi invariants in the tropical…
We consider Gromov's homological higher convexity for complements of tropical varieties, establishing it for complements of tropical hypersurfaces and curves, and for nonarchimedean amoebas of varieties that are complete intersections over the field of complex Puiseaux series. Based on these results, we conjecture that the complement of a tropical variety has this higher convexity, and we prove a weak form of our conjecture for the nonarchimedean amoeba of a variety over the complex Puiseaux field. One of our main tools is Jonsson's limit theorem for tropical varieties.
We propose to study the tropical geometry specifically arising from convergent Hahn series in multiple indeterminates. One application is a new view on stable intersections of tropical hypersurfaces. Another one is perturbations of rank one tropical polytopes, which is beneficial for algorithmic purposes.
Block and Göttsche have defined a $q$-number refinement of counts of tropical curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Under the change of variables $q=e^{iu}$, we show that the result is a generating series of higher genus log Gromov-Witten invariants with insertion of a lambda class. This gives a geometric interpretation of the Block-Göttsche invariants and makes their deformation invariance manifest.
We show that the tropicalization of a connected variety over a higher rank valued field is a path connected topological space. This establishes an affirmative answer to a question posed by Banerjee. Higher rank tropical varieties are studied as the images of "Hahn analytifications", introduced in this paper. A Hahn analytification is a space of valuations on a scheme over a higher rank valued field. We prove that the Hahn analytification is related to higher rank tropicalization by means of an inverse limit theorem, extending well-known results in the non-Archimedean case. We also establish co…
Let $X$ be a smooth geometrically connected projective curve of genus two over a complete non-archimedean field $K$. For discretely valued $K$, the first main theorem in \cite{liu} gives a set of criteria on the Igusa invariants of the curve that determine the minimal Berkovich skeleton of $X$ together with its edge lengths and vertex weights. In this paper we use the theory of Berkovich spaces to give a new proof of this theorem that works for arbitrary complete non-archimedean fields. We furthermore interpret the final result in terms of tropical moduli spaces and tropical Igusa invariants. …
We study the maximal values of Betti numbers of tropical subvarieties of a given dimension and degree in $\mathbb{TP}^n$. We provide a lower estimate for the maximal value of the top Betti number, which naturally depends on the dimension and degree, but also on the codimension. In particular, when the codimension is large enough, this lower estimate is larger than the maximal value of the corresponding Hodge number of complex algebraic projective varieties of the given dimension and degree. In the case of surfaces, we extend our study to all tropical homology groups. As a special case, we prov…
Working over various graded Lie algebras and in arbitrary dimension, we express scattering diagrams and theta functions in terms of counts of tropical curves/disks, weighted by multiplicities given in terms of iterated Lie brackets. Over the tropical vertex group, our tropical curve counts are known to give certain descendant log Gromov-Witten invariants. Working over the quantum torus algebra yields theta functions for quantum cluster varieties, and our tropical description sets up for geometric interpretations of these. As an immediate application, we prove the quantum Frobenius conjecture o…
We present an algorithm for computing zero-dimensional tropical varieties based on triangular decomposition and Newton polygon methods. From it, we derive algorithms for computing points on and links of higher-dimensional tropical varieties, using intersections with affine hyperplanes to reduce the dimension to zero. We use the algorithms to show that the tropical Grassmannians $\mathcal G_{3,8}$ and $\mathcal G_{4,8}$ are not simplicial.
We consider a variant of metrised graphs where the edge lengths take values in a commutative monoid, as a higher-rank generalisation of the notion of a tropical curve. Divisorial gonality, which Baker and Norine defined on combinatorial graphs in terms of a chip firing game, is extended to these monoid-metrised graphs. We define geometric gonality of a monoid-metrised graph as the minimal degree of a horizontally conformal, non-degenerate morphism onto an monoid-metrised tree, and prove that geometric gonality is an upper bound for divisorial gonality in the monoid-metrised case. We also show …
The goal of this note is to affirm a local version of the conjecture of Nisse--Sottile [NS16] on higher convexity of complements of tropical varieties, while providing a family of counter-examples for the global Nisse--Sottle conjecture in any codimension and dimension higher than 1. Moreover, it will be shown that, surprisingly, this family also provides a family of counter-examples for the generalized Hodge conjecture for positive currents in these dimensions, and gives rise to further approximability obstruction.
We give a tropical description of the counting of real log curves in toric degenerations of toric varieties. We treat the case of genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. The proof relies on log deformation theory and is a real version of the Nishinou-Siebert approach to the tropical correspondence theorem for complex curves. In dimension two, we use similar techniques to study the counting of real log curves with Welschinger signs and we obtain a new proof of Mikhalkin's tropical correspondence theorem for Welschinger invariants.
Given integers $g \geq 0$, $n \geq 1$, and a vector $w \in (\mathbb{Q} \cap (0, 1])^n$ such that ${2g - 2 + \sum w_i > 0}$, we study the topology of the moduli space $Δ_{g, w}$ of $w$-stable tropical curves of genus $g$ with volume 1. The space $Δ_{g, w}$ is the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in Hassett's moduli space of $w$-stable genus $g$ curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, w}$. When $g \geq 1$, we show that $Δ_{g, w}$ is simply connected for all values of $w$. We also give a formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ_{g, w}$ in terms of the combinatorics of $w$.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k. We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions. We cons…
Given a finitely generated algebra $A$, it is a fundamental question whether $A$ has a full rank discrete (Krull) valuation $\mathfrak{v}$ with finitely generated value semigroup. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for this, in terms of tropical geometry of $A$. In the course of this we introduce the notion of a Khovanskii basis for $(A, \mathfrak{v})$ which provides a framework for far extending Gröbner theory on polynomial algebras to general finitely generated algebras. In particular, this makes a direct connection between the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry…
The main characters of this paper are the moduli spaces $TM_{g,n}$ of rational tropical curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points, with $g\geq 2$. We reduce the study of the homotopy type of these spaces to the analysis of compact spaces $X_{g,n}$, which in turn possess natural representations as a homotopy colimits of diagrams of topological spaces over combinatorially defined generalized simplicial complexes $Δ_g$, with the latter being interesting on their own right. We use these homotopy colimit representations to describe a CW complex decomposition for each $X_{g,n}$. Furthermore, we use…
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
We study whether a given tropical curve $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be realized as the tropicalization of an algebraic curve whose non-archimedean skeleton is faithfully represented by $Γ$. We give an affirmative answer to this question for a large class of tropical curves that includes all trivalent tropical curves, but also many tropical curves of higher valence. We then deduce that for every metric graph $G$ with rational edge lengths there exists a smooth algebraic curve in a toric variety whose analytification has skeleton $G$, and the corresponding tropicalization is faithful. Our approach…
We introduce the notion of tropical Lagrangian multi-sections over a $2$-dimensional integral affine manifold $B$ with singularities, and use them to study the reconstruction problem for higher rank locally free sheaves over Calabi-Yau surfaces. To certain tropical Lagrangian multi-sections $\mathbb{L}$ over $B$, which are explicitly constructed by prescribing local models around the ramification points, we construct locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}_0(\mathbb{L},{\bf{k}}_s)$ over the singular projective scheme $X_0(B,\mathscr{P},s)$ associated to $B$ equipped with a polyhedral decomposition $…
In this paper we introduce broccoli curves, certain plane tropical curves of genus zero related to real algebraic curves. The numbers of these broccoli curves through given points are independent of the chosen points - for arbitrary choices of the directions of the ends of the curves, possibly with higher weights, and also if some of the ends are fixed. In the toric Del Pezzo case we show that these broccoli invariants are equal to the Welschinger invariants (with real and complex conjugate point conditions), thus providing a proof of the independence of Welschinger invariants of the point con…
We generalize the standard combinatorial techniques of toric geometry to the study of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The character and cocharacter lattices are replaced by certain integral linear manifolds described by Gross, Hacking, and Keel, and monomials on toric varieties are replaced with the canonical theta functions which GHK defined using ideas from mirror symmetry. We describe the tropicalizations of theta functions and use them to generalize the dual pairing between the character and cocharacter lattices. We use this to describe generalizations of dual cones, Newton and polar polytopes, M…
We prove a conjecture of Bousseau, van Garrel and the first-named author relating, under suitable positivity conditions, the higher genus maximal contact log Gromov-Witten invariants of Looijenga pairs to other curve counting invariants of Gromov-Witten/Gopakumar-Vafa type. The proof consists of a closed-form $q$-hypergeometric resummation of the quantum tropical vertex calculation of the log invariants in presence of infinite scattering. The resulting identity of $q$-series appears to be new and of independent combinatorial interest.
The tropical vertex is an incarnation of mirror symmetry found by Gross, Pandharipande and Siebert. It can be applied to m-Kronecker quivers K(m) (together with a result of Reineke) to compute the Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of their (framed) representations in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants (as shown by Gross and Pandharipande). In this paper, we study a possible geometric picture behind this correspondence, in particular constructing rational tropical curves from subquivers of the universal covering quiver of K(m). Additional motivation comes from the physical interpretatio…
To any quiver with relations we associate a consistent scattering diagram taking values in the motivic Hall algebra of its category of representations. We show that the chamber structure of this scattering diagram coincides with the natural chamber structure in an open subset of the space of stability conditions on the associated triangulated category. In the three-dimensional Calabi-Yau situation, when the relations arise from a potential, we can apply an integration map to give a consistent scattering diagram taking values in a tropical vertex group.
