Elements of the tropical vertex group are formal families of symplectomorphisms of the 2-dimensional algebraic torus. Commutators in the group are related to Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of quiver representations and the Gromov-Witten theory of toric surfaces. After a short survey of the subject (based on lectures of Pandharipande at the 2009 Geometry summer school in Lisbon), we prove new results about the rays and symmetries of scattering diagrams of commutators (including previous conjectures by Gross-Siebert and Kontsevich). Where possible, we present both the quiver and Gromov-Witten perspectives.
We prove that the quantum DT invariants associated to quivers with genteel potential can be expressed in terms of certain refined counts of tropical disks. This is based on a quantum version of Bridgeland's description of cluster scattering diagrams in terms of stabilitiy conditions, plus a new version of the description of scattering diagrams in terms of tropical disk counts. The weights with which the tropical disks are counted are expressed in terms of motivic integrals of certain quiver flag varieties. We also show via explicit counterexample that Hall algebra broken lines do not result in…
Adopting the Mahler measure from number theory, we introduce it to toric quiver gauge theories, and study some of its salient features and physical implications. We propose that the Mahler measure is a universal measure for the quiver, encoding its dynamics with the monotonic behaviour along a so-called Mahler flow including two special points at isoradial and tropical limits. Along the flow, the amoeba, from tropical geometry, provides geometric interpretations for the dynamics of the quiver. In the isoradial limit, the maximization of Mahler measure is shown to be equivalent to $a$-maximizat…
In this paper, we study the capped vertex functions associated to certain zero-dimensional type-$A$ Nakajima quiver varieties. The insertion of descendants into the vertex functions can be expressed by the Macdonald operators, which leads to explicit combinatorial formulas for the capped vertex functions. We determine the monodromy of the vertex functions and show that it coincides with the elliptic R-matrix of symplectic dual variety. We apply our results to give the vertex functions and the characters of the tautological bundles on the quiver varieties formed from arbitrary stability conditi…
We study the connection between the affine degenerate Grassmannians in type $A$, quiver Grassmannians for one vertex loop quivers and affine Schubert varieties. We give an explicit description of the degenerate affine Grassmannian of type $GL_n$ and identify it with semi-infinite orbit closure of type $A_{2n-1}$. We show that principal quiver Grassmannians for the one vertex loop quiver provide finite-dimensional approximations of the degenerate affine Grassmannian. Finally, we give an explicit description of the degenerate affine Grassmannian of type $A_1^{(1)}$, propose a conjectural descrip…
In this paper we prove the rationality of the capped vertex function with descendents for arbitrary Nakajima quiver varieties with generic stability conditions. We generalise the proof given by Smirnov to the general case, which requires to use techniques of tautological classes rather than the fixed-point basis. This result confirms that the "monodromy" of the capped vertex function is trivial, which gives a strong constraint for the monodromy of the capping operators. We will also provide a GIT wall-crossing formula for the capped vertex function in terms of the quantum difference operators …
We relate quantum degree cones, parametrizing PBW degenerations of quantized enveloping algebras, to (negative tight monomial) cones introduced by Lusztig in the study of monomials in canonical bases, to K-theoretic cones for quiver representations, and to some maximal prime cones in tropical flag varieties.

In this thesis we study the relation between scattering diagrams and deformations of holomorphic pairs, building on a recent work of Chan--Conan Leung--Ma. The new feature is the extended tropical vertex group where the scattering diagrams are defined. In addition, the extended tropical vertex provides interesting applications: on one hand we get a geometric interpretation of the wall-crossing formulas for coupled $2d$-$4d$ systems, previously introduced by Gaiotto--Moore--Neitzke. On the other hand, Gromov--Witten invariants of toric surfaces relative to their boundary divisor appear in the c…
We address the problem of existence of refined (i.e., depending on a formal parameter) tropical enumerative invariants, and we present two new examples of a refined count of rational marked tropical curves. One of the new invariants counts plane rational tropical curves with an unmarked vertex of arbitrary valency. It was motivated by the tropical enumeration of plane cuspidal tropical curves given by Y. Ganor and the author, which naturally led to consideration of plane tropical curves with an unmarked four-valent vertex. Another refined invariant counts rational tropical curves of a given de…
The moduli stack of representations of a quiver, or coherent sheaves on a proper curve, carries two structures on its cohomology: a Hall algebra and braided vertex coalgebra. We show that they are compatible, by developing a formulation of abelian localisation which works in the derived/singular setting. An application of these techniques gives an explicit formula for the cohomological Hall algebra products.
We study log Calabi-Yau varieties obtained as a blow-up of a toric variety along hypersurfaces in its toric boundary. Mirrors to such varieties are constructed by Gross-Siebert from a canonical scattering diagram built by using punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. We show that there is a piecewise linear isomorphism between the canonical scattering diagram and a scattering diagram defined algortihmically, following a higher dimensional generalisation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman construction. We deduce that the punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of the lo…
Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert have shown that the 2-dimensional Kontsevich-Soibelman scattering diagrams compute certain genus zero log Gromov-Witten invariants of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. We show that the $q$-refined 2-dimensional Kontsevich-Soibelman scattering diagrams compute, after the change of variables $q=e^{i \hbar}$, generating series of certain higher genus log Gromov-Witten invariants of log Calabi-Yau surfaces. This result provides a mathematically rigorous realization of the physical derivation of the refined wall-crossing formula from topological string theory proposed by Cecotti-…
We prove using jet schemes that the zero loci of the moment maps for the quivers with one vertex and at least two loops have rational singularities. This implies that the spaces of representations of the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus at least two have rational singularities. This has consequences for the representation zeta function of the special linear group over the integers and over the p-adic integers.
When $G$ is a complex reductive algebraic group, MV polytopes are in bijection with the non-negative tropical points of the unipotent group of $G$. By fixing $w$ from the Weyl group, we can define MV polytopes whose highest vertex is labelled by $w$. We show that these polytopes are in bijection with the non-negative tropical points of the reduced double Bruhat cell labelled by $w^{-1}$. To do this, we define a collection of generalized minor functions $Δ_γ^\text{new}$ which tropicalize on the reduced Bruhat cell to the BZ data of an MV polytope of highest vertex $w$. We also describe the comb…
Let $X$ be a smooth geometrically connected projective curve of genus two over a complete non-archimedean field $K$. For discretely valued $K$, the first main theorem in \cite{liu} gives a set of criteria on the Igusa invariants of the curve that determine the minimal Berkovich skeleton of $X$ together with its edge lengths and vertex weights. In this paper we use the theory of Berkovich spaces to give a new proof of this theorem that works for arbitrary complete non-archimedean fields. We furthermore interpret the final result in terms of tropical moduli spaces and tropical Igusa invariants. …
We identify certain Gromov-Witten invariants counting rational curves with given incidence and tangency conditions with the Betti numbers of moduli spaces of point configurations in projective spaces. On the Gromov-Witten side, S. Fomin and G. Mikhalkin established a recurrence relation via tropicalization, which is realized on the moduli space side using Donaldson-Thomas invariants of subspace quivers.
Working over various graded Lie algebras and in arbitrary dimension, we express scattering diagrams and theta functions in terms of counts of tropical curves/disks, weighted by multiplicities given in terms of iterated Lie brackets. Over the tropical vertex group, our tropical curve counts are known to give certain descendant log Gromov-Witten invariants. Working over the quantum torus algebra yields theta functions for quantum cluster varieties, and our tropical description sets up for geometric interpretations of these. As an immediate application, we prove the quantum Frobenius conjecture o…
A tropical curve in $\mathbb R^{3}$ contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants in all genus. Nevertheless, we present a simple formula for how a given tropical curve contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants when we encode these invariants in a generating function with exponents of $λ$ recording Euler characteristic. Our main modification from the known tropical correspondence formula for rational curves is as follows: a trivalent vertex, which before contributed a factor of $n$ to the count of zero-genus holomorphic curves, contributes a factor of $2\sin(nλ/2)$. We explain how to calculate relativ…
