In this paper, ensembles of classifiers that exploit several data augmentation techniques and four signal representations for training Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for audio classification are presented and tested on three freely available audio classification datasets: i) bird calls, ii) cat sounds, and iii) the Environmental Sound Classification dataset. The best performing ensembles combining data augmentation techniques with different signal representations are compared and shown to outperform the best methods reported in the literature on these datasets. The approach proposed here obtains state-of-the-art results in the widely used ESC-50 dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most extensive study investigating ensembles of CNNs for audio classification. Results demonstrate not only that CNNs can be trained for audio classification but also that their fusion using different techniques works better than the stand-alone classifiers.

Sound Event Detection and Audio Classification tasks are traditionally addressed through time-frequency representations of audio signals such as spectrograms. However, the emergence of deep neural networks as efficient feature extractors has enabled the direct use of audio signals for classification purposes. In this paper, we attempt to recognize musical instruments in polyphonic audio by only feeding their raw waveforms into deep learning models. Various recurrent and convolutional architectures incorporating residual connections are examined and parameterized in order to build end-to-end cl…
Many state-of-the-art systems for audio tagging and sound event detection employ convolutional recurrent neural architectures. Typically, they are trained in a mean teacher setting to deal with the heterogeneous annotation of the available data. In this work, we present a thorough analysis of how changing the temporal resolution of these convolutional recurrent neural networks - which can be done by simply adapting their pooling operations - impacts their performance. By using a variety of evaluation metrics, we investigate the effects of adapting this design parameter under several sound reco…
In this paper, we present a gated convolutional neural network and a temporal attention-based localization method for audio classification, which won the 1st place in the large-scale weakly supervised sound event detection task of Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) 2017 challenge. The audio clips in this task, which are extracted from YouTube videos, are manually labeled with one or a few audio tags but without timestamps of the audio events, which is called as weakly labeled data. Two sub-tasks are defined in this challenge including audio tagging and sound eve…

We propose a multi-label multi-task framework based on a convolutional recurrent neural network to unify detection of isolated and overlapping audio events. The framework leverages the power of convolutional recurrent neural network architectures; convolutional layers learn effective features over which higher recurrent layers perform sequential modelling. Furthermore, the output layer is designed to handle arbitrary degrees of event overlap. At each time step in the recurrent output sequence, an output triple is dedicated to each event category of interest to jointly model event occurrence an…

In this paper, we propose a stacked convolutional and recurrent neural network (CRNN) with a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) in the first layer for the multichannel sound event detection (SED) task. The 3D CNN enables the network to simultaneously learn the inter- and intra-channel features from the input multichannel audio. In order to evaluate the proposed method, multichannel audio datasets with different number of overlapping sound sources are synthesized. Each of this dataset has a four-channel first-order Ambisonic, binaural, and single-channel versions, on which the performance of…
In this study, we introduce a convolutional time-frequency-channel "Squeeze and Excitation" (tfc-SE) module to explicitly model inter-dependencies between the time-frequency domain and multiple channels. The tfc-SE module consists of two parts: tf-SE block and c-SE block which are designed to provide attention on time-frequency and channel domain, respectively, for adaptively recalibrating the input feature map. The proposed tfc-SE module, together with a popular Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) model, are evaluated on a multi-channel sound event detection task with overlapping au…
This paper proposes a Region-based Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (R-CRNN) for audio event detection (AED). The proposed network is inspired by Faster-RCNN, a well known region-based convolutional network framework for visual object detection. Different from the original Faster-RCNN, a recurrent layer is added on top of the convolutional network to capture the long-term temporal context from the extracted high level features. While most of the previous works on AED generate predictions at frame level first, and then use post-processing to predict the onset/offset timestamps of events f…
In this paper, we exploit a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) to analyze the audio data of spontaneous speech for dementia detection. A fully convolutional network accommodates speech samples with varying lengths, thus enabling us to analyze the speech sample without manual segmentation. Specifically, we first obtain the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) feature map from each participant's audio data and convert the speech classification task on audio data to an image classification task on MFCC feature maps. Then, to solve the data insufficiency problem, we apply transfer learning by …
Recent efforts have been made on domestic activities classification from audio recordings, especially the works submitted to the challenge of DCASE (Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events) since 2018. In contrast, few studies were done on domestic activities clustering, which is a newly emerging problem. Domestic activities clustering from audio recordings aims at merging audio clips which belong to the same class of domestic activity into a single cluster. Domestic activities clustering is an effective way for unsupervised estimation of daily activities performed in home e…
Robustness against temporal variations is important for emotion recognition from speech audio, since emotion is ex-pressed through complex spectral patterns that can exhibit significant local dilation and compression on the time axis depending on speaker and context. To address this and potentially other tasks, we introduce the multi-time-scale (MTS) method to create flexibility towards temporal variations when analyzing time-frequency representations of audio data. MTS extends convolutional neural networks with convolution kernels that are scaled and re-sampled along the time axis, to increas…
Environmental audio tagging is a newly proposed task to predict the presence or absence of a specific audio event in a chunk. Deep neural network (DNN) based methods have been successfully adopted for predicting the audio tags in the domestic audio scene. In this paper, we propose to use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract robust features from mel-filter banks (MFBs), spectrograms or even raw waveforms for audio tagging. Gated recurrent unit (GRU) based recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are then cascaded to model the long-term temporal structure of the audio signal. To complement th…

We then propose methods to learn representations using this model which can be effectively used for solving the target task. We study both transductive and inductive transfer learning tasks, showing the effectiveness of our methods for …
In this paper, we study the performance of variants of well-known Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures on different audio tasks. We show that tuning the Receptive Field (RF) of CNNs is crucial to their generalization. An insufficient RF limits the CNN's ability to fit the training data. In contrast, CNNs with an excessive RF tend to over-fit the training data and fail to generalize to unseen testing data. As state-of-the-art CNN architectures-in computer vision and other domains-tend to go deeper in terms of number of layers, their RF size increases and therefore they degrade in pe…

Critically, in this work we introduce and demonstrate the efficacy and high generalizability of extracted audio embeddings as a feature for the task of predicting media memorability.
We measure the effect of small amounts of systematic and random label noise caused by slightly misaligned ground truth labels in a fine grained audio signal labeling task. The task we choose to demonstrate these effects on is also known as framewise polyphonic transcription or note quantized multi-f0 estimation, and transforms a monaural audio signal into a sequence of note indicator labels. It will be shown that even slight misalignments have clearly apparent effects, demonstrating a great sensitivity of convolutional neural networks to label noise. The implications are clear: when using conv…

Combining multiple machine learning models into an ensemble is known to provide superior performance levels compared to the individual components forming the ensemble. This is because models can complement each other in taking better decisions. Instead of just combining the models, we propose a self-paced ensemble learning scheme in which models learn from each other over several iterations. During the self-paced learning process based on pseudo-labeling, in addition to improving the individual models, our ensemble also gains knowledge about the target domain. To demonstrate the generality of …
Residual learning is a recently proposed learning framework to facilitate the training of very deep neural networks. Residual blocks or units are made of a set of stacked layers, where the inputs are added back to their outputs with the aim of creating identity mappings. In practice, such identity mappings are accomplished by means of the so-called skip or residual connections. However, multiple implementation alternatives arise with respect to where such skip connections are applied within the set of stacked layers that make up a residual block. While ResNet architectures for image classifica…

We present in this paper PerformacnceNet, a neural network model we proposed recently to achieve score-to-audio music generation. The model learns to convert a music piece from the symbolic domain to the audio domain, assigning performance-level attributes such as changes in velocity automatically to the music and then synthesizing the audio. The model is therefore not just a neural audio synthesizer, but an AI performer that learns to interpret a musical score in its own way. The code and sample outputs of the model can be found online at https://github.com/bwang514/PerformanceNet.
We propose an automatic detection method of Alzheimer's diseases using a gated convolutional neural network (GCNN) from speech data.
