We study the spectrum and OPE coefficients of the three-dimensional critical O(2) model, using four-point functions of the leading scalars with charges 0, 1, and 2 ($s$, $ϕ$, and $t$). We obtain numerical predictions for low-twist OPE data in several charge sectors using the extremal functional method. We compare the results to analytical estimates using the Lorentzian inversion formula and a small amount of numerical input. We find agreement between the analytic and numerical predictions. We also give evidence that certain scalar operators lie on double-twist Regge trajectories and obtain estimates for the leading Regge intercepts of the O(2) model.
We present a Lorentzian inversion formula valid for any defect CFT that extracts the bulk channel CFT data as an analytic function of the spin variable. This result complements the already obtained inversion formula for the corresponding defect channel, and makes it now possible to implement the analytic bootstrap program for defect CFT, by going back and forth between both channels. A crucial role in our derivation is played by the Calogero-Sutherland description of defect blocks which we review. As first applications we obtain the large-spin limit of bulk CFT data necessary to reproduce the …
We analyze the convergence properties of operator product expansions (OPE) for Lorentzian CFT four-point functions of scalar operators. We give a complete classification of Lorentzian four-point configurations. All configurations in each class have the same OPE convergence properties in s-, t- and u-channels. We give tables including the information of OPE convergence for all classes. Our work justifies that in a subset of the configuration space, Lorentzian CFT four-point functions are genuine analytic functions. Our results are valid for unitary CFTs in $d\geq2$. Our work also provides some …
We establish the Lorentzian AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence from a reconstruction of all bulk points through the kinematic-space approach. The OPE block is exactly a bulk local operator. We formulate the correspondence between the bulk propagator in the non-interacting scalar field theory and the conformal block in CFT$_1$. When we consider the stress tensor, the variation probes the variation of AdS$_2$ metric. The reparameterization provides the asymptotic boundary of the bulk spacetime as in the derivation of the Schwarzian theory from two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory. Finally, we find…
We present a discussion on recent progress in high energy diffraction from the perspective of AdS/CFT, through which a unified treatment for both perturbative and nonperturbative Pomeron emerges. By working with Unitary Irreducible Representation of Conformal group, a frame is provided in extending AdS/CFT to both forward and nearforward scattering. We present an analysis involving an exact solution to conformal blocks in Minkowski CFT and discuss possible applications. Phenomenological applications can range from forward scattering to DIS/DVCS/TMD at LHC energies and beyond.
We apply the OPE inversion formula to thermal two-point functions of bosonic and fermionic CFTs in general odd dimensions. This allows us to analyze in detail the operator spectrum of these theories. We find that nontrivial thermal CFTs arise when the thermal mass satisfies an algebraic transcendental equation that ensures the absence of an infinite set of operators from the spectrum. The solutions of these gap equations for general odd dimensions are in general complex numbers and follow a particular pattern. We argue that this pattern unveils the large-$N$ vacuum structure of the correspondi…
We study tools of the conformal bootstrap in simplifying limits, primarily a limit of large operator dimensions and small cross-ratios corresponding to non-relativistic physics in AdS. We show that T-channel conformal blocks give the classical limit of correlation functions to linear order in an interaction potential. We use the Lorentzian inversion formula to compute anomalous dimensions due to T-channel exchanges and compare with time-independent perturbation theory in AdS. These calculations include new results not restricted to any limit, including anomalous dimensions from stress-tensor e…

Caron-Huot has recently given an interesting formula that determines OPE data in a conformal field theory in terms of a weighted integral of the four-point function over a Lorentzian region of cross-ratio space. We give a new derivation of this formula based on Wick rotation in spacetime rather than cross-ratio space. The derivation is simple in two dimensions but more involved in higher dimensions. We also derive a Lorentzian inversion formula in one dimension that sheds light on previous observations about the chaos regime in the SYK model.
We complete the project of specifying the Lorentzian AdS/CFT correspondence and its approximation by bulk semi-classical methods begun by earlier authors. At the end, the Lorentzian treatment is self-contained and requires no analytic continuation from the Euclidean. The new features involve a careful study of boundary terms associated with an initial time $t_-$ and a final time $t_+$. These boundary terms are determined by a choice of quantum states. The main results in the semi-classical approximation are 1) The times $t_\pm$ may be finite, and need only label Cauchy surfaces respectively to…
In a conformal field theory, two and three-point functions of scalar operators and conserved currents are completely determined, up to constants, by conformal invariance. The expressions for these correlators in Euclidean signature are long known in position space, and were fully worked out in recent years in momentum space. In Lorentzian signature, the position-space correlators simply follow from the Euclidean ones by means of the i-epsilon prescription. In this paper, we compute the Lorentzian correlators in momentum space and in arbitrary dimensions for three scalar operators by means of a…
In this note, we derive a Mellin space version of the Lorentzian inversion formula for CFTs by explicitly integrating over the cross-ratios in $d=2$ and $d=4$ spacetime dimensions. We use the simplicity of the Mellin representation of Witten diagrams and the double discontinuity to find the OPE coefficients and anomalous dimensions of double-trace primaries in large $N$ CFTs to order $\frac{1}{N^4}$. We find that our results match analytically at order $\frac{1}{N^2}$, and numerically at order $\frac{1}{N^4}$ with existing literature.

CFTs in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as the convergent Euclidean OPE. It is nowadays common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties also in Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. Here we consider Wightman 4-point functions of scalar primaries in Lorentzian signature. We derive a minimal set of their properties solely from the Euclidean unitary CFT axioms, without using extra assumptions. We …
We study the exact construction of D-branes in Lorentzian AdS(3). We start by defining a family of conformal field theories that gives a natural Euclidean version of the SL(2,R) CFT and does not correspond to H(3)+, the analytic continuation of AdS(3). We argue that one can recuperate the exact CFT results of Lorentzian AdS(3), upon an analytic continuation in the moduli space of these conformal field theories. Then we construct exact boundary states for various symmetric and symmetry-breaking D-branes in AdS(3).
We study heavy-light four-point function by employing Lorentzian inversion formula, where the conformal dimension of heavy operator is as large as central charge $C_T\rightarrow\infty$. We implement the Lorentzian inversion formula back and forth to reveal the universality of the lowest-twist multi-stress-tensor $T^k$ as well as large spin double-twist operators $[\mathcal{O}_H\mathcal{O}_L]_{n',J'}$. In this way, we also propose an algorithm to bootstrap the heavy-light four-point function by extracting relevant OPE coefficients and anomalous dimensions. By following the algorithm, we exhibit…
We discuss analytic continuation from d-dimensional Lorentzian de Sitter (dS$_d$) to d-dimensional Lorentzian anti-de Sitter (AdS$_{d}$) spacetime. We show that AdS$_{d}$, with opposite signature of the metric, can be obtained as analytic continuation of a portion of dS$_d$. This implies that the dynamics of (positive square-mass) scalar particles in AdS$_{d}$ can be obtained from the dynamics of tachyons in dS$_d$. We discuss this correspondence both at the level of the solution of the field equations and of the Green functions. The AdS/CFT duality is obtained as analytic continuation of the …
We provide a detailed construction of the quantum theory of the massless scalar field on 2-dimensional, globally-hyperbolic (in particular, Lorentzian) manifolds using the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. From this we subalgebras of observables isomorphic to the Heisenberg and Virasoro algebras on the Einstein cylinder. We also show how the conformal version of general covariance, as first introduced by Pinamonti as an extension of the construction due to Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch, may be applied to the concept of natural Lagrangians in order to obtain a simple c…
We demonstrate how to compute real-time Green's functions for a class of finite temperature field theories from their AdS gravity duals. In particular, we reproduce the two-by-two Schwinger-Keldysh matrix propagator from a gravity calculation. Our methods should work also for computing higher point Lorentzian signature correlators. We elucidate the boundary condition subtleties which hampered previous efforts to build a Lorentzian-signature AdS/CFT correspondence. For two-point correlators, our construction is automatically equivalent to the previously formulated prescription for the retarded …
We derive a sufficient set of conditions on the Euclidean boundary theory in dS/CFT for it to predict classical, Lorentzian bulk evolution at large spatial volumes. Our derivation makes use of a canonical transformation to express the bulk wave function at large volume in terms of the sources of the dual partition function. This enables a sharper formulation of dS/CFT. The conditions under which the boundary theory predicts classical bulk evolution are stronger than the criteria usually employed in quantum cosmology. We illustrate this in a homogeneous isotropic minisuperspace model of gravity…
We study the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the 3d maximally supersymmetric ABJ(M) theory with Chern-Simons level $k=2$, which in the large $N$ limit is holographically dual to weakly coupled M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$. We use the Lorentzian inversion to compute the 1-loop correction to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and the first higher derivative correction $R^4$ vertices, up to a finite number of contact terms that contribute to low spins where the inversion formula does not converge. We find a precise match with…
We use a Weyl transformation between $S^1 \times S^{d-1}$ and $S^1 \times \mathcal{H}^{d-1}/\mathbb{Z}$ to relate a conformal field theory at arbitrary temperature on $S^{d-1}$ to itself at the inverse temperature on $\mathcal{H}^{d-1}/\mathbb{Z}$. We use this equivalence to deduce a confining phase transition at finite temperature for large-$N$ gauge theories on hyperbolic space. In the context of gauge/gravity duality, this equivalence provides new examples of smooth bulk solutions which asymptote to conically singular geometries at the AdS boundary. We also discuss implications for the Eguc…

We use Lorentzian signature AdS/CFT duality to study a first order phase transition in strongly coupled gauge theories which is akin to the chiral phase transition in QCD. We discuss the relation between the latent heat and the energy (suitably defined) of the component of a D-brane which lies behind the horizon at the critical temperature. A numerical simulation of a dynamical phase transition in an expanding, cooling Quark-Gluon plasma produced in a relativistic collision is carried out.
We derive a Lorentzian OPE inversion formula for the principal series of $sl(2,\mathbb{R})$. Unlike the standard Lorentzian inversion formula in higher dimensions, the formula described here only applies to fully crossing-symmetric four-point functions and makes crossing symmetry manifest. In particular, inverting a single conformal block in the crossed channel returns the coefficient function of the crossing-symmetric sum of Witten exchange diagrams in AdS, including the direct-channel exchange. The inversion kernel exhibits poles at the double-trace scaling dimensions, whose contributions mu…
We use large spin perturbation theory and the Lorentzian inversion formula to compute order-$\varepsilon$ corrections to mixed correlators in the $O(n)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT in $4 - \varepsilon$ dimensions. In particular, we find the scaling dimensions and averaged OPE coefficients appearing in all correlators involving $φ$ and $φ^2$, for $φ^2$ in both the singlet and symmetric traceless representations of $O(n)$. We extend some computations to the next order, and find order-$\varepsilon^2$ data for a number of quantities for the Ising case at $n = 1$. Along the way, we discuss several interestin…
We analyse the double-discontinuities of the four-point correlator of the stress-tensor multiplet in N=4 SYM at large t' Hooft coupling and at order $1/N^4$, as a way to access one-loop effects in the dual supergravity theory. From these singularities we extract CFT-data by using two inversion procedures: one based on a recently proposed Froissart-Gribov inversion integral, and the other based on large spin perturbation theory. Both procedures lead to the same results and are shown to be equivalent more generally. Our computation parallels the standard S-matrix reconstruction via dispersion re…
We rewrite the worldsheet torus partition function of the Thermal AdS CFT by isolating the boundary parameters. Using this, we show that the spectrum of the Euclidean BTZ black hole and Lorentzian AdS3 can be extracted -- the latter as a zero temperature limit. A similar procedure recovers the Lorentzian BTZ spectrum proposed in an earlier work. We then use our expression to construct a boundary modular invariant expression as a Poincaré series.
In this article, we revisit the spectrum of the Lorentzian BTZ black hole conformal field theory. Building on a detailed analysis of geodesics, we identify a complete set of states for the harmonic analysis. We then demonstrate that the CFT spectrum is, plausibly, that of $AdS_3$ by rewriting the partition function of the latter CFT.
The Lorentzian AdS/CFT correspondence implies a map between local operators in supergravity and non-local operators in the CFT. By explicit computation we construct CFT operators which are dual to local bulk fields in the semiclassical limit. The computation is done for general dimension in global, Poincare and Rindler coordinates. We find that the CFT operators can be taken to have compact support in a region of the complexified boundary whose size is set by the bulk radial position. We show that at finite N the number of independent commuting operators localized within a bulk volume saturate…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the bulk spacetimes with the negative cosmological constant in the context of the brane-world scenario. We show that, in Euclidean bulk, or in Lorentzian static bulk, some sequences of hypersurfaces with the positive Ricci scalar evolve to the warped geometries like the anti-de Sitter spacetime. Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, we discuss that the positivity of the Ricci scalar is related to the stability of CFT on the brane. In addition, the brane-world is described from the holographic point of view. The asymptotic local structure of the conformal infi…
Correlators of unitary quantum field theories in Lorentzian signature obey certain analyticity and positivity properties. For interacting unitary CFTs in more than two dimensions, we show that these properties impose general constraints on families of minimal twist operators that appear in the OPEs of primary operators. In particular, we rederive and extend the convexity theorem which states that for the family of minimal twist operators with even spins appearing in the reflection-symmetric OPE of any scalar primary, twist must be a monotonically increasing convex function of the spin. Our arg…
We study the scattering of lumps in the 2+1-dimensional Ising CFT, indirectly, by analytically continuing its spectrum using the Lorentzian inversion formula. We find evidence that the intercept of the model is below unity: $j_*\approx 0.8$, indicating that scattering is asymptotically transparent corresponding to a negative Lyapunov exponent. We use as input the precise spectrum obtained from the numerical conformal bootstrap. We show that the truncated spectrum allows the inversion formula to reproduce the properties of the spin-two stress tensor to $10^{-4}$ accuracy and we address the ques…
We prove an inversion identity for the open AdS/CFT SU(1|1) quantum spin chain which is exact for finite size. We use this identity, together with an analytic ansatz, to determine the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix and the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations. We also solve the closed chain by algebraic Bethe ansatz.
We compute time-ordered 2- and 3-pt correlation functions of CFT scalar operators between generic in/out states. The calculation is holographically carried out by considering a non backreacting AdS scalar field with a $λϕ^3$ self-interaction term on a combination of Euclidean and Lorentzian AdS sections following the Skenderis-van Rees prescription. We show that, although working in an essentially different set up, the final result for the 3-pt correlators agree with those of Rastelli et al. for Euclidean AdS. By analyzing the inner product between the in/out excited states in the large $N$ ap…
In this note we study the $1+1$ dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentzian signature, explicitly constructing the gauge-invariant classical phase space and the quantum Hilbert space and Hamiltonian. We also semiclassically compute the Hartle-Hawking wave function in two different bases of this Hilbert space. We then use these results to illustrate the gravitational version of the factorization problem of AdS/CFT: the Hilbert space of the two-boundary system tensor-factorizes on the CFT side, which appears to be in tension with the existence of gauge constraints in the bulk. In this mo…
We consider the operator product expansion (OPE) structure of scalar primary operators in a generic Lorentzian CFT and its dual description in a gravitational theory with one extra dimension. The OPE can be decomposed into certain bi-local operators transforming as the irreducible representations under conformal group, called the OPE blocks. We show the OPE block is given by integrating a higher spin field along a geodesic in the Lorentzian AdS space-time when the two operators are space-like separated. When the two operators are time-like separated however, we find the OPE block has a peculia…
We consider Lorentzian CFT Wightman functions in momentum space. In particular, we derive a set of reference formulas for computing two- and three-point functions, restricting our attention to three-point functions where the middle operator (corresponding to a Hamiltonian density) carries zero spatial momentum, but otherwise allowing operators to have arbitrary spin. A direct application of our formulas is the computation of Hamiltonian matrix elements within the framework of conformal truncation, a recently proposed method for numerically studying strongly-coupled QFTs in real time and infini…
We present a dispersion relation in conformal field theory which expresses the four point function as an integral over its single discontinuity. Exploiting the analytic properties of the OPE and crossing symmetry of the correlator, we show that in perturbative settings the correlator depends only on the spectrum of the theory, as well as the OPE coefficients of certain low twist operators, and can be reconstructed unambiguously. In contrast to the Lorentzian inversion formula, the validity of the dispersion relation does not assume Regge behavior and is not restricted to the exchange of spinni…
In the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, physical interest attaches to understanding Virasoro conformal blocks at large central charge and in a kinematical regime of large Lorentzian time separation, $t\sim c$. However, almost no analytical information about this regime is presently available. By employing the Wilson line representation we derive new results on conformal blocks at late times, effectively resumming all dependence on $t/c$. This is achieved in the context of "light-light" blocks, as opposed to the richer, but much less tractable, "heavy-light" blocks. The results exhibit an initia…
There are effective field theories that cannot be embedded in any UV complete theory. We consider scalar effective field theories, with and without dynamical gravity, in $D$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime with large radius and derive precise bounds (analytically) on the coupling constants of higher derivative interactions $ϕ^2\Box^kϕ^2$ by only requiring that the dual CFT obeys the standard conformal bootstrap axioms. In particular, we show that all such coupling constants, for even $k\ge 2$, must satisfy positivity, monotonicity, and log-convexity conditions in the absence of dyna…
Recently, the AdS/CFT conjecture of Maldacena has been investigated in Lorentzian signature by Balasubramanian et. al. We extend this investigation to Lorentzian BTZ black hole spacetimes, and study the bulk and boundary behaviour of massive scalar fields both in the non-extremal and extremal case. Using the bulk-boundary correspondence, we also evaluate the two-point correlator of operators coupling to the scalar field at the boundary of the spacetime, and find that it satisfies thermal periodic boundary conditions relevant to the Hawking temperature of the BTZ black hole.
Two sets of modes of a massive free scalar field are quantized in a pair of Poincaré patches of Lorentzian anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, AdS$_{d+1}$ ($d \geq 2$). It is shown that in Poincaré coordinates $(r,t,\vec{x})$, the two boundaries at $r=\pm \infty$ are connected. When the scalar mass $m$ satisfies a condition $0 < ν=\sqrt{(d^2/4)+(m\ell)^2} <1$, there exist two sets of mode solutions to Klein-Gordon equation, with distinct fall-off behaviors at the boundary. By using the fact that the boundaries at $r=\pm \infty$ are connected, a conserved Klein-Gordon norm can be defined for these two …
We conjecture the inversion relations for thermalized solvable interaction round the face (IRF) two dimensional lattice models. We base ourselves on an ansatz for the Baxterization described by the author in the 90's. We solve these inversion relations in the four main regimes of the models, to give the free energy of the models, in these regimes. We use the method of Baxter in the calculation of the free energy of the hard hexagon model. We believe these results to be quite general, shared by most of the known IRF models. Our results apply equally well to solvable vertex models. Using the exp…
We give a unified treatment of dispersive sum rules for four-point correlators in conformal field theory. We call a sum rule dispersive if it has double zeros at all double-twist operators above a fixed twist gap. Dispersive sum rules have their conceptual origin in Lorentzian kinematics and absorptive physics (the notion of double discontinuity). They have been discussed using three seemingly different methods: analytic functionals dual to double-twist operators, dispersion relations in position space, and dispersion relations in Mellin space. We show that these three approaches can be mapped…
