Various quantum theories of gravity predict the existence of a minimal measurable length. In this paper, we study effects of the minimal length on the motion of a particle in the Rindler space under a harmonic potential. This toy model captures key features of particle dynamics near a black hole horizon, and allows us to make three observations. First, we find that the chaotic behavior is stronger with the increases of the minimal length effects, which manifests that the maximum Lyapunov characteristic exponents mostly grow, and the KAM curves on Poincaré surfaces of section tend to disintegrate into chaotic layers. Second, in the presence of the minimal length effects, it can take a finite amount of Rindler time for a particle to cross the Rindler horizon, which implies a shorter scrambling time of black holes. Finally, it shows that some Lyapunov characteristic exponents can be greater than the surface gravity of the horizon, violating the recently conjectured universal upper bound. In short, our results reveal that quantum gravity effects may make black holes prone to more chaos and faster scrambling.
The vacuum expectation value of the current density for a charged scalar field is investigated in Rindler spacetime with a part of spatial dimensions compactified to a torus. It is assumed that the field is prepared in the Fulling-Rindler vacuum state. For general values of the phases in the periodicity conditions and the lengths of compact dimensions, the expressions are provided for the Hadamard function and vacuum currents. The current density along compact dimensions is a periodic function of the magnetic flux enclosed by those dimensions and vanishes on the Rindler horizon. The obtained r…
We investigate the holographic entanglement entropy in the Rindler-AdS space-time to obtain an exact solution for the corresponding minimal surface. Moreover, the holographic entanglement entropy of the charged single accelerated AdS Black holes in four dimensions is investigated. We obtain the volume of the codimension one-time slice in the bulk geometry enclosed by the minimal surface for both the RindlerAdS space-time and the charged accelerated AdS Black holes in the bulk. It is shown that the holographic entanglement entropy and the volume enclosed by the minimal hyper-surface in both the…
Mixing transformations for a uniformly accelerated observer (Rindler observer) are analyzed within the quantum field theory framework as a basis for investigating gravitational effects on flavor oscillations. In particular, the case of two charged boson fields with different masses is discussed. In spite of such a minimal setting, the standard Unruh radiation is found to loose its characteristic thermal interpretation due to the interplay between the Bogolubov transformation hiding in field mixing and the one arising from the Rindler spacetime structure. The modified spectrum detected by the R…
We point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the minimaly coupled massless quantum real scalar field in the two dimensional BTZ black hole. We also calculate the renormalized energy-momentum tensor for the same field in the eternal CGHS black hole, AdS, Robertson-Walker and Rindler spacetime in two dimensions. We also discuss the Boulware, the Hartle-Hawking-Israel and the Unruh state for the eternal CGHS black hole.
We compute the black hole horizon entanglement entropy for a massless scalar field in the brick wall model by incorporating the minimal length. Taking the minimal length effects on the occupation number $n(ω,l)$ and the Hawking temperature into consideration, we obtain the leading UV divergent term and the subleading logarithmic term in the entropy. The leading divergent term scales with the horizon area. The subleading logarithmic term is the same as that in the usual brick wall model without the minimal length.
In this work, we point out an overlooked and subtle feature of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) approach to quantizing gravity: namely that different pairs of modified operators with the same modified commutator, $[\hat{X},\hat{P}] = i \hbar (1+βp^2)$, may have different physical consequences such as having no minimal length at all. These differences depend on how the position and/or momentum operators are modified rather than only on the resulting modified commutator. This provides guidance when constructing GUP models since it distinguishes those GUPs that have a minimal length sc…
In quantum gravity it is generally thought that a modified commutator of the form $[{\hat x}, {\hat p}] = i \hbar (1 + βp^2)$ is sufficient to give rise to a minimum length scale. We test this assumption and find that different pairs of modified operators can lead to the same modified commutator and yet give different or even no minimal length. The conclusion is that the modification of the operators is the main factor in determining whether there is a minimal length. This fact - that it is the specific form of the modified operators which determine the existence or not of a minimal length sca…
We investigate a microscopic black hole in case of modified generalized uncertainty principle with a minimal uncertainty in position as well as in momentum. We calculate thermodynamical functions of a Schwarzschild black hole such as temperature, entropy and heat capacity. It is shown that incorporation of minimal uncertainty in momentum leads to minimal temperature of a black hole similarly as we have for Schwarzschschild-AdS black hole without minimal uncertainty. Minimal temperature gives rise to Hawking-Page phase transition. Emission rate equation and black hole lifetime are also obtained…
In this paper we have studied the problem of scalar particles pair creation by a constant electric field in the presence of a minimal length. A closed expression for the corresponding Green's function is obtained via path integral approach. Then by projecting this function on the outgoing particle and antiparticle states we have calculated the probability to create a pair of particles and the number density of created particles. From this, we have deduced the modifications brought by the minimal length to Hawking temperature and black hole entropy. It is shown that the first correction is a lo…
In this paper, we clarify a foundational loose end affecting the phenomenological approach to quantum gravity centered around the generalization of Heisenberg uncertainty principle. This misconception stems from a series of recently published works in which perturbative and non-perturbative methods are confused, thereby resulting in a blurring of the distinction between changes in the deformed algebra and changes in the representation of operators. Accordingly, this reasoning would render the existence of a minimal length representation-dependent, and thus unphysical.
In this note we discuss the question of gauge invariance in the presence of a minimal length. This contribution is prepared for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Yang-Mills theory.
Generic arguments lead to the idea that quantum gravity has a minimal length scale. A possible observational signal of such a minimal length scale is that photons should exhibit dispersion. In 2009 the observation of a short gamma ray burst seemed to bound the minimal length scale to distances smaller than the Planck length, implying that spacetime appeared continuous to distances below the Planck length. This poses a challenge for such minimal distance models. Here we propose a modification of the position and momentum operators, ${\hat x}$ and ${\hat p}$, which lead to a minimal length scale…
Quantum mechanical models with a minimal length are often described by modifying the commutation relation between position and momentum. Although this represents a small complication when described in momentum space, at least formally, the (quasi-)position representation acquires numerous issues, source of misunderstandings. In this work, we review these issues, clarifying some of the aspects of minimal length models, with particular reference to the representation of the position operator.
We consider the modification to Kruglov's non-linear electrodynamics in the presence of minimal length ($l_p$), by considering a specific formulation of generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The presence of minimal length has been motivated by several candidate theories of quantum-gravity (both perturbative and non-perturbative). We show that, such minimal length modifications could lead to momentum dependent bounds on zero-point electric field strength, for the aforementioned non-linear model of electrodynamics. We further show that, the existence of minimal length modifies the measure of …
In this work we explicitly solve the problem of the harmonic oscillator in the classical limit of a minimal-length scenario. We show that (i) the motion equation of the oscillator is not linear anymore because the presence of a minimal length introduces an anarmonic term and (ii) its motion is described by a Jacobi sine elliptic function. Therefore the motion is periodic with the same amplitude and with the new period depending on the minimal length. This result (the change in the period of oscillation) is very important since it enables us to find in a quite simple way the most relevant effec…
In this paper, we investigate effects of the minimal length on the Schwinger mechanism using the quantum field theory (QFT) incorporating the minimal length. We first study the Schwinger mechanism for scalar fields in both usual QFT and the deformed QFT. The same calculations are then performed in the case of Dirac particles. Finally, we discuss how our results imply for the corrections to the Unruh temperature and the Hawking temperature due to the minimal length.
The measurability notion introduced previously in a quantum theory on the basis of a minimal length in this paper is defined in thermodynamics on the basis of a minimal inverse temperature. Based on this notion, some inferences are made for gravitational thermodynamics of horizon spaces and, specifically, for black holes with the Schwarzschild metric.
The effects of a minimal length are investigated within an algebraically extended theory of General Relativity (GR). Former attempts, to include a minimal length in GR are first resumed, with a conformal factor of the metric as a consequence. Effective potentials for various black hole masses (as ratios to the minimal length) are deduced. It is found that the existence of a minimal length has, for a small mass black hole, important effects on the effective potential near the event horizon, creating barriers which inhibit that particles can pass the event horizon. Further, a new limit for the m…
In the deformed quantum mechanics with a minimal length, one WKB connection formula through a turning point is derived. We then use it to calculate tunnelling rates through potential barriers under the WKB approximation. Finally, the minimal length effects on two examples of quantum tunneling in nuclear and atomic physics are discussed
The problem of a particle of mass m in the field of the inverse square potential is studied in quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle, characterized by the existence of a minimal length. Using the coordinate representation, for a specific form of the generalized uncertainty relation, we solve the deformed Schrödinger equation analytically in terms of confluent Heun functions. We explicitly show the regularizing effect of the minimal length on the singularity of the potential. We discuss the problem of bound states in detail and we derive an expression for the energy spectru…
In this paper, we investigate effects of the minimal length on quantum tunnelling from spherically symmetric black holes using the Hamilton-Jacobi method incorporating the minimal length. We first derive the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi equations for scalars and fermions, both of which have the same expressions. The minimal length correction to the Hawking temperature is found to depend on the black hole's mass and the mass and angular momentum of emitted particles. Finally, we calculate a Schwarzschild black hole's luminosity and find the black hole evaporates to zero mass in infinite time.
Recently, it was conjectured that the Lyapunov exponent of chaotic motion of a particle in a black hole is universally bounded from above by the surface gravity of the black hole. On the other hand, the minimal length appears in various theories of quantum gravity and leads to the deformed canonical position-momentum commutation relation. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to study effects of the minimal length on the motion of a massive particle perturbed away from an unstable equilibrium near the black hole horizon. We find that the minimal length effects make the particle move…
By considering the generalized uncertainty principle, the degrees of freedom near the apparent horizon of Vaidya black hole are calculated with thin film model. The result shows that a cut-off can be introduced naturally rather than taking by hand. Furthermore, if the minimal length is chosen to be a specific value, the statistical entropy will satisfy the conventional area law at the horizon, which might reveal some deep things of the minimal length.
We use the Melnikov method to identify chaotic behavior in geodesic motion perturbed by the minimal length effects around a Schwarzschild black hole. Unlike the integrable unperturbed geodesic motion, our results show that the perturbed homoclinic orbit, which is a geodesic joining the unstable circular orbit to itself, becomes chaotic in the sense that Smale horseshoes chaotic structure is present in phase space.
The generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) modifies the uncertainty relation between momentum and position giving room for a minimal length, as predicted by candidates theories of quantum gravity. Inspired by GUP, Planck's distribution is derived by considering a new quantization of the electromagnetic field. We elaborate on the thermodynamics of the black body radiation obtaining Wien's law and the Stefan-Boltzmann law. We show that such thermodynamics laws are modified at Planck-scale.
We study some fundamental issues related to the Hilbert space representation of quantum mechanics in the presence of a minimal length and maximal momentum. In this framework, the maximally localized states and quasi-position representation introduced by Kempf et al. are reconsidered and modified. We show that all studies in recent years, including [15] and [16] need serious modification in order to be a consistent framework for quantum mechanics in Planck scale.
The present work is a continuation of the previous papers written by the author on the subject. In terms of the measurability (or measurable quantities) notion introduced in a minimal length theory, first the consideration is given to a quantum theory in the momentum representation. The same terms are used to consider the Markov gravity model that here illustrates the general approach to studies of gravity in terms of measurable quantities. This paper is dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Professor Vladimir Grigor'evich Baryshevsky.
Phenomenological studies of quantum gravity have proposed a modification of the commutator between position and momentum in quantum mechanics so to introduce a minimal uncertainty in position in quantum mechanics. Such a minimal uncertainty and the consequent minimal measurable length have important consequences on the dynamics of quantum systems. In the present work, we show that such consequences go beyond dynamics, reaching the definition of quantities such as energy, momentum, and the same Hamiltonian. Furthermore, since the Hamiltonian, defined as the generator of time evolution, results …
The pseudoharmonic oscillator potential is studied in non relativistic quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle characterized by the existence of a minimal length scale. By using a perturbative approach, we analytically compute the correction to the energy spectrum in the first order of the minimal length parameter \b{eta}. We investigate the effect of this fundamental length on the vibration-rotation energy levels of diatomic molecules with this potential function interaction. We explicitly show that the minimal length would have some importance in studying the spectra of di…
