A closed convex conic subset $\mathcal{S}$ of the positive semidefinite (PSD) cone is rank-one generated (ROG) if all of its extreme rays are generated by rank-one matrices. The ROG property of $\mathcal{S}$ is closely related to the exactness of SDP relaxations of nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) related to $\mathcal{S}$. We consider the case where $\mathcal{S}$ is obtained as the intersection of the PSD cone with finitely many homogeneous linear matrix inequalities and conic constraints and identify sufficient conditions that guarantee that $\mathcal{S}$ is ROG. Our general framework allows us to recover a number of well-known results from the literature. In the case of two linear matrix inequalities, we also establish the necessity of our sufficient conditions. This extends one of the few settings from the literature -- the case of one linear matrix inequality and the S-lemma -- where an explicit characterization for the ROG property exists. Finally, we show how our ROG results on cones can be translated into inhomogeneous SDP exactness results and convex hull descriptions in the original space of a QCQP. We close with a few applications of these results; specifically, we recover the well-known perspective reformulation of a simple mixed-binary set via the ROG toolkit.
The Lyapunov rank of a proper cone $K$ in a finite dimensional real Hilbert space is defined as the dimension of the space of all Lyapunov-like transformations on $K$, or equivalently, the dimension of the Lie algebra of the automorphism group of $K$. This (rank) measures the number of linearly independent bilinear relations needed to express a complementarity system on $K$ (that arises, for example, from a linear program or a complementarity problem on the cone). Motivated by the problem of describing spectral/proper cones where the complementarity system can be expressed as a square system (…
Under the relaxed constant rank condition, introduced by Minchenko and Stakhovski, we prove that the linearized cone is contained in the tangent cone (Abadie condition) for sets represented as solution sets to systems of finite numbers of inequalities and equations given by continuously differentiable functions defined on Banach spaces.
Let ${\cal S}_+^n \subset {\cal S}^n$ be the cone of positive semi-definite matrices as a subset of the vector space of real symmetric $n \times n$ matrices. The intersection of ${\cal S}_+^n$ with a linear subspace of ${\cal S}^n$ is called a spectrahedral cone. We consider spectrahedral cones $K$ such that every element of $K$ can be represented as a sum of rank 1 matrices in $K$. We shall call such spectrahedral cones rank one generated (ROG). We show that ROG cones which are linearly isomorphic as convex cones are also isomorphic as linear sections of the positive semi-definite matrix cone…
The low-rank matrix optimization with affine manifold (rank-MOA) aims to minimize a continuously differentiable function over a low-rank set intersecting with an affine manifold. This paper is devoted to the optimality analysis for rank-MOA. As a cornerstone, the intersection rule of the Fréchet normal cone to the feasible set of the rank-MOA is established under some mild linear independence assumptions. Aided with the resulting explicit formulae of the underlying normal cone, the so-called F-stationary point and the α-stationary point of rank-MOA are investigated and the relationship with lo…
The constant rank constraint qualification, introduced by Janin in 1984 for nonlinear programming, has been extensively used for sensitivity analysis, global convergence of first- and second-order algorithms, and for computing the derivative of the value function. In this paper we discuss naive extensions of constant rank-type constraint qualifications to second-order cone programming and semidefinite programming, which are based on the Approximate-Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary optimality condition and on the application of the reduction approach. Our definitions are strictly weaker than Robins…
In this paper, we analyze optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. Box constraints for the controls are imposed and the cost functional involves the state and possibly a sparsity-promoting term, but not a Tikhonov regularization term. Unlike finite dimensional optimization or control problems involving Tikhonov regularization, second order sufficient optimality conditions for the control problems we deal with must be imposed in a cone larger than the one used to obtain necessary conditions. Different extensions of this cone have been proposed in the literature for d…
We present a unified study of first and second order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for minimax and Chebyshev optimisation problems with cone constraints. First order optimality conditions for such problems can be formulated in several different forms: in terms of a linearised problem, in terms of Lagrange multipliers (KKT-points), in terms of subdifferentials and normal cones, in terms of a nonsmooth penalty function, in terms of cadres with positive cadre multipliers, and in an alternance form. We describe interconnections between all these forms of necessary and sufficient o…
The well known constant rank constraint qualification [Math. Program. Study 21:110--126, 1984] introduced by Janin for nonlinear programming has been recently extended to a conic context by exploiting the eigenvector structure of the problem. In this paper we propose a more general and geometric approach for defining a new extension of this condition to the conic context. The main advantage of our approach is that we are able to recast the strong second-order properties of the constant rank condition in a conic context. In particular, we obtain a second-order necessary optimality condition tha…
The nonnegative rank of a matrix A is the smallest integer r such that A can be written as the sum of r rank-one nonnegative matrices. The nonnegative rank has received a lot of attention recently due to its application in optimization, probability and communication complexity. In this paper we study a class of atomic rank functions defined on a convex cone which generalize several notions of "positive" ranks such as nonnegative rank or cp-rank (for completely positive matrices). The main contribution of the paper is a new method to obtain lower bounds for such ranks which improve on previousl…
In [R. Andreani, G. Haeser, L. M. Mito, H. Ramírez C., Weak notions of nondegeneracy in nonlinear semidefinite programming, arXiv:2012.14810, 2020] the classical notion of nondegeneracy (or transversality) and Robinson's constraint qualification have been revisited in the context of nonlinear semidefinite programming exploiting the structure of the problem, namely, its eigendecomposition. This allows formulating the conditions equivalently in terms of (positive) linear independence of significantly smaller sets of vectors. In this paper we extend these ideas to the context of nonlinear second-…
For the rank regularized minimization problem, we introduce several kinds of stationary points by the problem itself and its equivalent reformulations including the mathematical program with an equilibrium constraint (MPEC), the global exact penalty of the MPEC,the surrogate yielded by eliminating the dual part in the exact penalty. A clear relation chart is established for these stationary points, which guides the user to choose an appropriate reformulation for seeking a low-rank solution. As a byproduct, we also provide a weaker condition for a local minimizer of the MPEC to be the M-station…
The error bound property for a solution set defined by a set-valued mapping refers to an inequality that bounds the distance between vectors closed to a solution of the given set by a residual function. The error bound property is a Lipschitz-like/calmness property of the perturbed solution mapping, or equivalently the metric subregularity of the underlining set-valued mapping. It has been proved to be extremely useful in analyzing the convergence of many algorithms for solving optimization problems, as well as serving as a constraint qualification for optimality conditions. In this paper, we …
We study the boundary structure of closed convex cones, with a focus on facially dual complete (nice) cones. These cones form a proper subset of facially exposed convex cones, and they behave well in the context of duality theory for convex optimization. Using the well-known and commonly used concept of tangent cones in nonlinear optimization, we introduce some new notions for exposure of faces of convex sets. Based on these new notions, we obtain a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for a cone to be facially dual complete. In our sufficient condition, we utilize a new notion calle…
In this paper necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are given for a linear operator to be a positive operators of an Extended Lorentz cone. Similarities and differences with the positive operators of Lorentz cones are investigated.
Copositive and completely positive matrices play an increasingly important role in Applied Mathematics, namely as a key concept for approximating NP-hard optimization problems. The cone of copositive matrices of a given order and the cone of completely positive matrices of the same order are dual to each other with respect to the standard scalar product on the space of symmetric matrices. This paper establishes some new relations between orthogonal pairs of such matrices lying on the boundary of either cone. As a consequence, we can establish an improvement on the upper bound of the cp-rank of…
In this paper we address the basic geometric question of when a given convex set is the image under a linear map of an affine slice of a given closed convex cone. Such a representation or 'lift' of the convex set is especially useful if the cone admits an efficient algorithm for linear optimization over its affine slices. We show that the existence of a lift of a convex set to a cone is equivalent to the existence of a factorization of an operator associated to the set and its polar via elements in the cone and its dual. This generalizes a theorem of Yannakakis that established a connection be…
We derive a sufficient condition guaranteeing that a singularly perturbed linear time-varying system is strongly monotone with respect to a matrix cone $C$ of rank $k$. This implies that the singularly perturbed system inherits the asymptotic properties of systems that are strongly monotone with respect to $C$, which include convergence to the set of equilibria when $k=1$, and a Poincaré-Bendixson property when $k=2$. We extend this result to singularly perturbed nonlinear systems with a compact and convex state-space. We demonstrate our theoretical results using a simple numerical example.
This paper is concerned with second-order optimality conditions for the mathematical program with semidefinite cone complementarity constraints (SDCMPCC).To achieve this goal, we first provide an exact characterization on the second-order tangent set to the semidefinite cone complementarity (SDCC) set in terms of the second-order directional derivative of the projection operator onto the SDCC set, and then use the second-order tangent set to the SDCC set to derive second-order necessary and sufficient conditions for SDCMPCC under suitable subregularity constraint qualifications. An application…
We study the closure of the projection of the (nonconvex) cone of rank restricted positive semidefinite matrices onto subsets of the matrix entries. This defines the feasible sets for semidefinite completion problems with restrictions on the ranks. Applications include conditions for low-rank completions using the nuclear norm heuristic.
In this paper we present necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of invariant cones, for semigroup actions, in the space of the $k$-fold exterior product. As consequence we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for controllability of a class of bilinear control systems.
Given a rational pointed $n$-dimensional cone $C$, we study the integer Carathéodory rank $\operatorname{CR}(C)$ and its asymptotic form $\operatorname{CR^{\rm a}}(C)$, where we consider ``most'' integer vectors in the cone. The main result significantly improves the previously known upper bound for $\operatorname{CR^{\rm a}}(C)$. We also study bounds on $\operatorname{CR}(C)$ in terms of $Δ$, the maximal absolute $n\times n$ minor of the matrix given in an integral polyhedral representation of $C$. If $Δ\in\lbrace 1,2\rbrace$, we show $\operatorname{CR}(C) = n$, and prove upper bounds for sim…
In this paper, we study the linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones. We convert a linear complementarity problem on an extended second order cone into a mixed complementarity problem on the non-negative orthant. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to be a solution of the converted problem. We also present solution strategies for this problem, such as the Newton method and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Finally, we present some numerical examples.
A qualitative account is given of a differential pursuit/evasion game. A criterion for the existence of an intercept solution is obtained using future cones that contain all attainable trajectories of target or interceptor originating from an initial position. A sufficient and necessary conditon that an opportunity to intercept always exist is that, after some initial time, the future cone of the target be contained within the future cone of the interceptor. The sufficient condition may be regarded as a kind of Nash equillibrium.
The paper suggests a new --- to the best of the author's knowledge --- characterization of decisions which are optimal in the multi-objective optimization problem with respect to a definite proper preference cone, a Euclidean cone with a prescribed angular radius. The main idea is to use the angle distances between the unit vector and points of utility space. A necessary and sufficient condition for the optimality in the form of an equation is derived. The first-order necessary optimality conditions are also obtained.
In this paper, we introduce a kind of approximate Karush--Kuhn--Tucker condition (AKKT) for a smooth cone-constrained vector optimization problem. We show that, without any constraint qualification, the AKKT condition is a necessary for a local weak efficient solution of the considered problem. For convex problems, we prove that the AKKT condition is a necessary and sufficient optimality condition for a global weak efficient solution. We also introduce some strict constraint qualifications associated with the AKKT condition.
Given a nonnegative matrix M with rational entries, we consider two quantities: the usual positive semidefinite (psd) rank, where the matrix is factored through the cone of real symmetric psd matrices, and the rational-restricted psd rank, where the matrix factors are required to be rational symmetric psd matrices. It is clear that the rational-restricted psd rank is always an upper bound to the usual psd rank. We show that this inequality may be strict by exhibiting a matrix with psd rank four whose rational-restricted psd rank is strictly greater than four.

A pointed convex cone naturally induces a partial order, and further a notion of nondecreasingness for functions. We consider extended real-valued functions defined on the cone. Monotone conjugates for these functions can be defined in an analogous way to the standard convex conjugate. The only difference is that the supremum is taken over the cone instead of the entire space. We give sufficient conditions for the cone under which the corresponding Fenchel-Moreau biconjugation identity holds for proper, convex, lower semicontinuous, and nondecreasing functions defined on the cone. In addition,…

We study the cone of completely positive (cp) matrices for the first interesting case $n = 5$. This is a semialgebraic set, which means that the polynomial equalities and inequlities that define its boundary can be derived. We characterize the different loci of this boundary and we examine the two open sets with cp-rank 5 or 6. A numerical algorithm is presented that is fast and able to compute the cp-factorization even for matrices in the boundary. With our results, many new example cases can be produced and several insightful numerical experiments are performed that illustrate the difficulty…
The tangential condition was introduced in [Hanke et al., 95] as a sufficient condition for convergence of the Landweber iteration for solving ill-posed problems. In this paper we present a series of time dependent benchmark inverse problems for which we can verify this condition.
