The performance of deep networks for semantic image segmentation largely depends on the availability of large-scale training images which are labelled at the pixel level. Typically, such pixel-level image labellings are obtained manually by a labour-intensive process. To alleviate the burden of manual image labelling, we propose an interesting learning approach to generate pixel-level image labellings automatically. A Guided Filter Network (GFN) is first developed to learn the segmentation knowledge from a source domain, and such GFN then transfers such segmentation knowledge to generate coarse object masks in the target domain. Such coarse object masks are treated as pseudo labels and they are further integrated to optimize/refine the GFN iteratively in the target domain. Our experiments on six image sets have demonstrated that our proposed approach can generate fine-grained object masks (i.e., pixel-level object labellings), whose quality is very comparable to the manually-labelled ones. Our proposed approach can also achieve better performance on semantic image segmentation than most existing weakly-supervised approaches.
A central challenge for the task of semantic segmentation is the prohibitive cost of obtaining dense pixel-level annotations to supervise model training. In this work, we show that in order to achieve a good level of segmentation performance, all you need are a few well-chosen pixel labels. We make the following contributions: (i) We investigate the novel semantic segmentation setting in which labels are supplied only at sparse pixel locations, and show that deep neural networks can use a handful of such labels to good effect; (ii) We demonstrate how to exploit this phenomena within an active …

The average mean accuracy and mean intersection over union (IoU) was up to 3 percent better for the best performing instance segmentation model, the average pixel accuracy and weighted IoU were slightly better for the best performing semantic segmentation model.…

Image segmentation as a clustering problem is to identify pixel groups on an image without any preliminary labels available. It remains a challenge in machine vision because of the variations in size and shape of image segments. Furthermore, determining the segment number in an image is NP-hard without prior knowledge of the image content. This paper presents an automatic color image pixel clustering scheme based on mussels wandering optimization. By applying an activation variable to determine the number of clusters along with the cluster centers optimization, an image is segmented with minim…

Pixel-level labelling tasks, such as semantic segmentation, play a central role in image understanding. Recent approaches have attempted to harness the capabilities of deep learning techniques for image recognition to tackle pixel-level labelling tasks. One central issue in this methodology is the limited capacity of deep learning techniques to delineate visual objects. To solve this problem, we introduce a new form of convolutional neural network that combines the strengths of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Conditional Random Fields (CRFs)-based probabilistic graphical modelling. The availability of a large quantity of labelled training data is crucial for the training of modern object detectors. Hand labelling training data is time consuming and expensive while automatic labelling methods inevitably add unwanted noise to the labels. We examine the effect of different types of label noise on the performance of an object detector. We then show how co-teaching, a method developed for handling noisy labels and previously demonstrated on a classification problem, can be improved to mitigate the effects of label noise in an object detection setting. We illustrate our result…
We propose a novel deep architecture, SegNet, for semantic pixel wise image labelling. SegNet has several attractive properties; (i) it only requires forward evaluation of a fully learnt function to obtain smooth label predictions, (ii) with increasing depth, a larger context is considered for pixel labelling which improves accuracy, and (iii) it is easy to visualise the effect of feature activation(s) in the pixel label space at any depth. SegNet is composed of a stack of encoders followed by a corresponding decoder stack which feeds into a soft-max classification layer. The decoders help map…

The new era of image segmentation leveraging the power of Deep Neural Nets (DNNs) comes with a price tag: to train a neural network for pixel-wise segmentation, a large amount of training samples has to be manually labeled on pixel-precision. In this work, we address this by following an indirect solution. We build upon the advances of the Explainable AI (XAI) community and extract a pixel-wise binary segmentation from the output of the Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) explaining the decision of a classification network. We show that we achieve similar results compared to an established …
This work describes the hardware implementation of a connected component labelling (CCL) module in reprogammable logic. The main novelty of the design is the "full", i.e. without any simplifications, support of a 4 pixel per clock format (4 ppc) and real-time processing of a 4K/UltraHD video stream (3840 x 2160 pixels) at 60 frames per second. To achieve this, a special labelling method was designed and a functionality that stops the input data stream in order to process pixel groups which require writing more than one merger into the equivalence table. The proposed module was verified in simu…

Monitoring of land cover and land use is crucial in natural resources management. Automatic visual mapping can carry enormous economic value for agriculture, forestry, or public administration. Satellite or aerial images combined with computer vision and deep learning enable precise assessment and can significantly speed up change detection. Aerial imagery usually provides images with much higher pixel resolution than satellite data allowing more detailed mapping. However, there is still a lack of aerial datasets made for the segmentation, covering rural areas with a resolution of tens centime…
Semantic image segmentation is a principal problem in computer vision, where the aim is to correctly classify each individual pixel of an image into a semantic label. Its widespread use in many areas, including medical imaging and autonomous driving, has fostered extensive research in recent years. Empirical improvements in tackling this task have primarily been motivated by successful exploitation of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) pre-trained for image classification and object recognition. However, the pixel-wise labelling with CNNs has its own unique challenges: (1) an accurate deconv…

Existing methods for pixel-wise labelling tasks generally disregard the underlying structure of labellings, often leading to predictions that are visually implausible. While incorporating structure into the model should improve prediction quality, doing so is challenging - manually specifying the form of structural constraints may be impractical and inference often becomes intractable even if structural constraints are given. We sidestep this problem by reducing structured prediction to a sequence of unconstrained prediction problems and demonstrate that this approach is capable of automatical…
Semantic image segmentation is a fundamental task in image understanding. Per-pixel semantic labelling of an image benefits greatly from the ability to consider region consistency both locally and globally. However, many Fully Convolutional Network based methods do not impose such consistency, which may give rise to noisy and implausible predictions. We address this issue by proposing a dense multi-label network module that is able to encourage the region consistency at different levels. This simple but effective module can be easily integrated into any semantic segmentation systems. With comp…

Semantic segmentation is the pixel-wise labelling of an image. Since the problem is defined at the pixel level, determining image class labels only is not acceptable, but localising them at the original image pixel resolution is necessary. Boosted by the extraordinary ability of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in creating semantic, high level and hierarchical image features; several deep learning-based 2D semantic segmentation approaches have been proposed within the last decade. In this survey, we mainly focus on the recent scientific developments in semantic segmentation, specifically on…
In this work, we aim at automatically labeling actors in a TV series. Rather than relying on transcripts and subtitles, as has been demonstrated in the past, we show how to achieve this goal starting from a set of example images of each of the main actors involved, collected from the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). The problem then becomes one of domain adaptation: actors' IMDB photos are typically taken at awards ceremonies and are quite different from their appearances in TV series. In each series as well, there is considerable change in actor appearance due to makeup, lighting, ageing, etc.…
This paper presents a method for automatic video object segmentation based on the fusion of motion stream, appearance stream, and instance-aware segmentation. The proposed scheme consists of a two-stream fusion network and an instance segmentation network. The two-stream fusion network again consists of motion and appearance stream networks, which extract long-term temporal and spatial information, respectively. Unlike the existing two-stream fusion methods, the proposed fusion network blends the two streams at the original resolution for obtaining accurate segmentation boundary. We develop a …

Studying tongue motion during speech using ultrasound is a standard procedure, but automatic ultrasound image labelling remains a challenge, as standard tongue shape extraction methods typically require human intervention. This article presents a method based on deep neural networks to automatically extract tongue contour from ultrasound images on a speech dataset. We use a deep autoencoder trained to learn the relationship between an image and its related contour, so that the model is able to automatically reconstruct contours from the ultrasound image alone. In this paper, we use an automati…
The matching function for the problem of stereo reconstruction or optical flow has been traditionally designed as a function of the distance between the features describing matched pixels. This approach works under assumption, that the appearance of pixels in two stereo cameras or in two consecutive video frames does not change dramatically. However, this might not be the case, if we try to match pixels over a large interval of time. In this paper we propose a method, which learns the matching function, that automatically finds the space of allowed changes in visual appearance, such as due to …

In this paper we describe an approach to semi-automatically create a labelled dataset for semantic segmentation of urban street-level point clouds. We use data fusion techniques using public data sources such as elevation data and large-scale topographical maps to automatically label parts of the point cloud, after which only limited human effort is needed to check the results and make amendments where needed. This drastically limits the time needed to create a labelled dataset that is extensive enough to train deep semantic segmentation models. We apply our method to point clouds of the Amste…
Image datasets with high-quality pixel-level annotations are valuable for semantic segmentation: labelling every pixel in an image ensures that rare classes and small objects are annotated. However, full-image annotations are expensive, with experts spending up to 90 minutes per image. We propose block sub-image annotation as a replacement for full-image annotation. Despite the attention cost of frequent task switching, we find that block annotations can be crowdsourced at higher quality compared to full-image annotation with equal monetary cost using existing annotation tools developed for fu…
Data-driven perception approaches are well-established in automated driving systems. In many fields even super-human performance is reached. Unlike prediction and planning approaches, mainly supervised learning algorithms are used for the perception domain. Therefore, a major remaining challenge is the efficient generation of ground truth data. As perception modules are positioned close to the sensor, they typically run on raw sensor data of high bandwidth. Due to that, the generation of ground truth labels typically causes a significant manual effort, which leads to high costs for the labelli…
In this paper, we propose an approach to the unsupervised segmentation of images using Markov Random Field. The proposed approach is based on the idea of Bit Plane Slicing. We use the planes as initial labellings for an ensemble of segmentations. With pixelwise voting, a robust segmentation approach can be achieved, which we demonstrate on microscope cell images. We tested our approach on a publicly available database, where it proven to be competitive with other methods and manual segmentation.
In this paper, we propose an automatic brain tumor segmentation approach (e.g., PixelNet) using a pixel-level convolutional neural network (CNN). The model extracts feature from multiple convolutional layers and concatenate them to form a hyper-column where samples a modest number of pixels for optimization. Hyper-column ensures both local and global contextual information for pixel-wise predictors. The model confirms the statistical efficiency by sampling a few pixels in the training phase where spatial redundancy limits the information learning among the neighboring pixels in conventional pi…
