We study the polarization of positively charged $W$'s in the scattering of massive electroweak bosons at hadron colliders. We rely on the separation of weak boson polarizations in the gauge-invariant, doubly-resonant part of the amplitude in Monte Carlo simulations. Polarizations depend on the reference frame in which they are defined. We discuss the change in polarization fractions and in kinematic distributions arising from defining polarization vectors in two different reference frames which have been employed in recent experimental analyses.
Underlying event was originally defined by the CDF collaboration decades ago. Here we improve the original definition to extend our analysis for events with multiple-jets. We introduce a definition for surrounding rings/belts and based on this definition the jet- and surrounding-belt-excluded areas will provide a good underlying event definition. We inverstigate our definition via the multiplicity in the defined geometry. In parallel, mean transverse momenta of these areas also studied in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV LHC energy.
We note that the definition of diffractive events is a matter of convention. We discuss two possible `definitions': one based on unitarity and the other on Large Rapidity Gaps (LRG) or Pomeron exchange. LRG can also arise from fluctuations and we quantify this effect and some of the related uncertainties. We find care must be taken in extracting the Pomeron contribution from LRG events. We show that long-range correlations in multiplicities can arise from the same multi-Pomeron diagrams that are responsible for LRG events, and explain how early LHC data can illuminate our understanding of `sof…
We present a strategy to quantify the performance of jet definitions in kinematic reconstruction tasks. It is designed to make use exclusively of physical observables, in contrast to previous techniques which often used unphysical Monte Carlo partons as a reference. It is furthermore independent of the detailed shape of the kinematic distributions. We analyse the performance of 5 jet algorithms over a broad range of jet-radii, for sources of quark jets and gluon jets, spanning the energy scales of interest at the LHC, both with and without pileup. The results allow one to identify optimal jet …
We present state-of-the-art predictions for off-shell $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production with di-lepton decays at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Results are accurate at NLO in QCD and include all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and finite-width effects for top quarks and $W$ bosons. We discuss the impact of QCD corrections and assess theoretical uncertainties from scale and PDF dependence at the integrated and differential level. Additionally we investigate the size of contributions induced by initial-state $b$ quarks to the NLO cross section.
We re-examine the current state of the art for the calculation of photon-initiated processes at the LHC, as formulated in terms of a photon PDF in the proton that may be determined rather precisely from the known proton structure functions. We in particular demonstrate that a by construction more precise calculation is provided by a direct application of the structure function approach, best known from the case of Higgs Boson production via vector boson fusion. This avoids any artificial scale variation uncertainties, which can otherwise be rather significant for processes calculated within th…
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a $t\bar{t}$ pair in association with two heavy-flavour jets. We concentrate on the di-lepton $t\bar{t}$ decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The computation is based on $pp \to e^+ ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, b\bar{b} \,b\bar{b}$ matrix elements and includes all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark and the $W$ gauge boson. As it is customary for such studies, results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections…
The processes involving a Higgs boson, a photon(gluon) and a fermion pair pose severe challenges to the experimental analysis. They represent rare decays and production mechanisms of the Higgs boson at LHC. However, they are not Yukawa suppressed at next-to-leading order opening a window for the correct definition of pseudo-observables, e.g. a definition of the Higgs decay width into Z + photon with universal inherent meaning, that are currently used in extracting information for the couplings of the newly discovered resonance at LHC. The impact of genuinely electroweak NLO corrections is disc…
Experimental search potential for sbottom via $\tildeχ^{\pm}_1$ decays at the LHC Run-3 and HL-LHC, in final states with same-sign leptons and multiple jets
We perform a comprehensive study of the allowed range for the Tevatron t tbar forward-backward asymmetries in six representative new physics models: a flavour-changing Z' boson, a scalar isodoublet, a W' boson, a heavy axigluon, a colour-triplet and a colour-sextet scalar. We devote special attention to the constraints from the t tbar tail at LHC on the parameter space, which will be dramatic if the measurements agree with the SM prediction, specially for Z' and W' bosons. We also study the predictions for the charge asymmetries at LHC and compare several proposed definitions.
The precise measurement of the top quark mass, which is a fundamental SM parameter, constitutes one of the main goals of the LHC top physics program. One approach to measure this quantity uses the $ρ_\mathrm{s}$ distribution, an observable depending on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$ system. To fully exploit the experimental accuracy achievable in measuring top quark production cross sections at the LHC, the theory uncertainties associated to these measurements need to be well under control. To this end we present a study of the effect of varying the theoretical input parameters in the c…
Within the 3-3-1 model framework, we consider the production and decay of fermionic leptoquarks into a striking experimental signature at the LHC: a narrow resonance at the $b$ jet plus same-sign dileptons channel. The data already accumulated by the LHC collaborations may hide a large number of events associated to the production and decay of such exotic quarks, allowing one to investigate large portions of the parameters space of the model. The observation or not of such events would shed light on the construction of models presenting heavy exotic quarks.
Statistical tools have been developed to quantify the agreement between a hypothesis or a model and the observed data for probabilistic phenomena. In this work, we define statistical methods used to measure the properties of the higgs boson in the LHC on the one hand, but also to evaluate the uncertainty and precision on these measurements. They are based on the definition of a likelihood function whose construction will be detailed below. The challenge of HEP is to generate tons of data and to develop powerful analyses to tell if the data indeed contains evidence for the new particle, and con…
Top polarisation measurements at the LHC are often performed using template methods. I discuss the role of quantum interference between polarisation states - which is mostly overlooked in the literature. Furthermore, I argue which is the correct definition of the `templates' of definite polarisations, in order to match the experimental measurements with meaningful theoretical predictions.
By using observables that only depend on charged particles (tracks), one can efficiently suppress pile-up contamination at the LHC. Such measurements are not infrared safe in perturbation theory, so any calculation of track-based observables must account for hadronization effects. We develop a formalism to perform these calculations in QCD, by matching partonic cross sections onto new non-perturbative objects called track functions which absorb infrared divergences. The track function T_i(x) describes the energy fraction x of a hard parton i which is converted into charged hadrons. We give a f…
In this brief review we study the discovery potential of heavy Higgs induced single-top, same-sign top and triple-top quark productions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The context is general two Higgs doublet model where such processes can be induced by additional Yukawa couplings and sub-Tev Higgs bosons. We show that these processes can be discovered at the ongoing or future high luminosity LHC run. Discovery of these multi-top productions may shed light on the mechanism behind baryogenesis or cosmic inflation.
We study the phenomenology of same sign top pair production at the LHC in a model-independent way. The complete set of dimension six operators involving two top (or anti-top) quarks is introduced and the connection with all possible t- or s-channel particle exchanges is established. Only in the former case, same and opposite sign top pair production can be related. We find that while current Tevatron data disfavor t-channel models, other production mechanisms are viable and can be tested at the LHC.
In practice the asymmetry, which is defined based on the angular distribution of the final states in scattering or decay processes, can be utilized to scrutinize underlying dynamics in and/or beyond the standard model (BSM). As one of the possible BSM physics which might be discovered early at the LHC, extra neutral gauge bosons $Z^\prime$s are theoretical well motivated. Once $Z^\prime$s are discovered at the LHC, it is crucial to discriminate different $Z^\prime$s in various BSM. In principle such task can be accomplished by measuring the angular distribution of the final states which are pr…
Triple gauge boson associated production at the LHC serves as an interesting channel to test the robustness of the Standard Model. Any deviation from its SM prediction may indicate possible existence of relevant new physics, e.g., anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo feasibility study of measuring WWA production with pure leptonic decays and probing anomalous quartic gauge-boson (e.g., WWAA) couplings, is presented in detail for the first time, with parton shower and detector simulation effects taken into account. Our results show that at the sqrt{s} = 14 TeV L…
The topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) theory predicts tree-level flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) top quark Yukawa couplings with top-pions. Such FCNC interactions will induce like-sign top quark pair productions at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While these rare productions are far below the observable level in the Standard Model and other popular new physics models such as the Minimal Supersymmetric Model, we find that in a sound part of parameter space the TC2 model can enhance the production cross sections to several tens of fb and thus may be observable at the LHC due to rather…
On-going Higgs searches in the light mass window are of vital importance for testing the Higgs mechanism and probing new physics beyond the standard model (SM). The latest ATLAS and CMS searches for the SM Higgs boson at the LHC (7TeV) found some intriguing excesses of events in the γγ/VV^* channels (V=Z,W) around the mass-range of 124-126 GeV. We explore a possible explanation of the γγand VV^* signals from the light CP-odd Higgs A^0 or CP-even Higgs h^0 from the general two-Higgs-doublet model with fourth-family fermions. We demonstrate that by including invisible decays of the Higgs boson A…
The measurement of polarization fractions of massive gauge bosons at the LHC provides an important check of the Standard Model and in particular of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking mechanism. Owing to the unstable character of $\text{W}$ and $\text{Z}$ bosons, devising a theoretical definition for polarized signals is not straightforward and always subject to some ambiguity. Focusing on $\text{W}$-boson pair production at the LHC in the fully leptonic channel, we propose to compute polarized cross-sections and distributions based on the gauge-invariant doubly-resonant part of the amplitude. W…
The production of doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^{\pm\pm}) at the CERN LHC can give rise to distinctive multi-lepton signatures. The discovery potential of H^{\pm\pm} can be optimized by considering a search strategy which is sensitive to both of the dominant production mechanisms, q\bar q\to H^{++}H^{--} and q\bar {q'}\to H^{\pm\pm}H^{\mp}. We compare the discovery potential for the signatures of exactly four leptons and at least three leptons in the final state, using the same set of cuts. We have carried out fast detector simulations at the LHC for both signal and backgrounds for a wide ran…
We study the LHC signatures of new gauge bosons in the gauge-invariant minimal Higgsless model. It predicts an extra pair of W_1 and Z_1 bosons which can be as light as ~400GeV and play a key role in the delay of unitarity violation. We analyze the W_1 signals in pp --> W_0Z_0Z_0 --> jj4\ell and pp --> jj W_0Z_0 --> jj3\ellνprocesses at the LHC, including the complete electroweak and QCD backgrounds. We reveal the complementarity between these two channels for discovering the W_1 boson, and demonstrate the LHC discovery potential over the full range of allowed W_1 mass.
In this work productions of charged and doubly charged scalars and their lepton flavor violating collider signals in the framework of littlest Higgs model at LHC are studied. In the allowed parameter region of the littlest Higgs model, the production rates of the scalars of littlest Higgs model via $pp \to ϕ^{++}ϕ^{-}$, $pp \to ϕ^+ϕ^-$ and $pp \to ϕ^{++}ϕ^{--}$ processes are calculated. We obtained that charged and doubly charged scalar pairs can be produced at LHC . Considering the possible lepton flavor violating decays of charged scalars found in literature, final state analysis is done. Th…
In the very early stages of LHC running, uncertainties in detector performance will lead to large ambiguities in jet, electron and photon energy measurements, along with inferred missing transverse energy. However, muon detection should be quite straightforward, with the added benefit that muons can be reliably detected down to transverse energies of order 5 GeV. Supersymmetry discovery through multimuon channels has been extensively explored in the literature, but always relying on hard ET^miss cuts. Here, we quantify signal and background rates for same-sign (SS) dimuon and multimuon product…
In hadron interactions at the LHC energies, the reflective scattering mode starts to play a role which is expected to be even a more significant beyond the energies of the LHC. This new but still arguable phenomenon implies a peripheral dependence of the inelastic probability distribution in the impact parameter space and asymptotically evolving to the black ring. As a consequence, the straightforward extension to hadrons of the centrality definition adopted for nuclei needs to be modified.
An algorithm is developed which the goal of producing the most statistically significant signature list for distinguishing between two candidate models given a set of LHC observations.
Same-sign $W$ boson pairs production is a promising channel to look for signatures of double parton interactions at the LHC. The corresponding cross section has been calculated by using double parton distribution functions, encoding two parton correlations, evaluated in a Light-Front quark model. The obtained result is in line with previous estimates which make use of an external parameter, the so called effective cross section, not necessary in our approach. The possibility to observe for the first time two-parton correlations, in the next LHC runs, has been established.
We study Higgs boson production in association with a top quark and a $W$ boson at the LHC. At NLO in QCD, $tWH$ interferes with $t\bar t H$ and a procedure to meaningfully separate the two processes needs to be employed. In order to define $tWH$ production for both total rates and differential distributions, we consider the diagram removal and diagram subtraction techniques that have been previously proposed for treating intermediate resonances at NLO, in particular in the context of $tW$ production. These techniques feature approximations that need to be carefully taken into account when the…
Double parton scattering, i.e. two parton hard scattering processes in the same hadron-hadron collision, may constitute an important background for Higgs and other new particle searches at the LHC. We point out that like-sign W pair production provides a relatively clean way of searching for, and calibrating, double parton scattering at the LHC.
Hints of flavor violation at both charged and neutral current decays of mesons have been observed in experiments such as LHCb, Belle, and BaBar. The anomalies in the result can be addressed in the effective field theory (EFT) framework. The effective operators predict different beyond standard model (BSM) signatures and the four point interaction vertices can be probed at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this context, the discovery projection of two opposite sign leptons and a $b$-jet signature is studied in this paper at 13 TeV LHC.
We discuss the production of W bosons in association with three jets at the LHC. We investigate how next-to-leading order QCD corrections modify basic kinematic distributions of jets and leptons. We also address the magnitude of NLO QCD effects in W+3 jet observables, relevant for SUSY searches at the LHC.
We study the possibility of same sign top quark pair production at the LHC (and the VLHC) as a direct probe of FCNC processes. Besides the SM neutral Z boson, two other neutral bosons are considered, a top-Higgs type scalar and a Z' boson that appear in Topcolor assisted Technicolor models. We find that the FCNC couplings tqV (q=u,c ; V=H,Z,Z') may produce an interesting signal of same sign top quark pairs that could be observed at the LHC (VLHC).
The phenomenology of unstable particles, including searches and exclusion limits at the LHC, depends significantly on its lineshape. When the width of the resonance is large with respect to its mass, off-shell effects become relevant and the very same definition of width becomes non trivial. Taking a heavy Higgs boson as an example, we propose a new formulation to describe the lineshape via an effective field theory approach. Our method leads to amplitudes that are gauge invariant, respect unitarity and can appropriately describe the lineshape of broad resonances. The application of the method…
We investigate the heavier electroweakino sectors in several versions of the MSSM, which has not been explored so far in the light of the LHC data, and obtain new bounds using the ATLAS Run I constraints in the $3l + {E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ channel. We also venture beyond the trilepton events and predict several novel multilepton + ${E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ signatures of these electroweakinos which may show up before the next shutdown of the LHC.
We study the phenomenology of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector in which the physics is dominated by spin one resonances. Specifically we will consider an effective description of dynamical symmetry breaking based on a particular model which passes all the low-energy precision tests and gives clear signals at LHC but also at Tevatron Upgrade.
We study the signature of $H^\pm$ decay into $h^0W$ at the LHC in SUSY models. It has only marginal viability in the MSSM. But in the singlet extensions like the NMSSM one can have a spectacular signature for $H^\pm$ decay into $(h^0,A^0)W$ over a significant domain of parameter space.
We examine the same-sign single dilepton productions of $\ell_i^{\pm}\ell_j^{\pm} (\ell_{i,j}=e,μ)$ in high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in models with doubly charged Higgs scalars as well as heavy Majorana neutrinos. We demonstrate that these spectacular productions can be detected at the LHC for a class model in which the doubly charged Higgs scalars couple only to the right-handed charged leptons. The ranges of the possible doubly charged Higgs masses and mixings to observe the processes at the LHC are discussed.
The isolated like sign dilepton signature for gluino production is investigated at the LHC energy for the $R$ conserving as well as the $L$ and $B$ violating SUSY models over a wide range of the parameter space. One gets viable signals for gluino masses of 300 and 600 GeV for both $R$ conserving and $L$ violating models, while it is less promising for the $B$ violating case. For a 1000 GeV gluino, the $L$ violating signal should still be viable; but the $R$ conserving signal becomes too small at least for the low luminosity option of LHC.
We analyse same sign dilepton signatures in a non-universal flavor changing Z' model. These arise due to tt (or t_bar t_bar) production processes due to the semi-leptonic decays of (anti)tops. We also discuss top reconstruction and spin measurement using the variable MT2 and MT2-Assisted On-Shell (MAOS) Momentum} techniques and will also provide a comparison with the on-shell mass relation method. Sensitivities to the flavor-changing top coupling has also been estimated for different LHC energies and projected LHC luminosities corresponding to them.
We investigate the rare radiative decays of extra gauge neutral bosons. In particular, we established the theoretical predictions for the production of unparticle in decays of $Z^{\prime}$ - bosons. The implementation of our prediction in the analysis at the LHC experiments should be straightforward and lead to more precise determination or limits of unparticle couplings and/or $Z^{\prime}$ couplings and masses.
We study the potential LHC discovery of the Z1 KK gauge boson unitarizing longitudinal W+W- scattering amplitude. In particular, we explore the decay mode Z1->t tbar along with Z1-> W+W- without specifying the branching fractions. We propose to exploit the associated production pp-> W Z1, and select the final state of like-sign dileptons plus multijets and large missing energy. We conclude that it is possible to observe the Z1 resonance at a 5 sigma level with an integrated luminosity of 100 inverse fb at the LHC upto 650 GeV for a dominant WW channel, and 560 GeV for a dominant ttbar channel.
Same-sign charged Higgs pair production via vector-boson scattering is a useful probe of the mass spectrum among the heavier scalar, pseudoscalar, and charged Higgs bosons in two-Higgs-doublet models. It has been shown that the production cross section scales as the square of the mass difference $Δm = (m_{H^0} - m_{A^0})$ in the alignment limit $(\cos(β- α)=0)$. We study the potential measurement of this same-sign charged Higgs pair production at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and the proposed 27 TeV $pp$ collider, with emphasis in the decay channel $H^\pm H^\pm \to (W^\pm A^0 ) (W^\pm A^0)$…
A systematic analysis of the like-sign dipleton signature for gluino production at LHC is performed in the $R$-conserving minimal supersymmetric standard model, taking into account the top quark and Higgs boson effects in the cascade decay. We consider two representative values of the gluino mass, 300 and 800 GeV, along with those of the other SUSY parameters. While the top quark contribution is kinematically suppressed for the former case it is very import for the latter. Ways of separating the signal from the background are discussed. One expects a viable LSD signals upto a gluino mass of $\…
New vectorlike quarks are predicted in many new physics scenarios beyond the Standard Model~(SM) and could potentially be discovered at the LHC. Based on a simplified model including a singlet vectorlike top partner with charge $2/3$, we investigate the process $pp \to TT$ via a $t$-channel induced by the couplings between the top partner with the first-generation SM quarks. We calculate the production cross section and further study the observability of the heavy top partner in the channel $T\to Wq$ at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) using final states with same-sign dileptons (electrons or …
We study the production of same-sign W boson pairs at the LHC in double parton interactions. Compared with simple factorised double parton distributions (dPDFs), we show that the recently developed dPDFs, GS09, lead to non-trivial kinematic correlations between the W bosons. A numerical study of the prospects for observing this process using same-sign dilepton signatures, including same-sign WWjj, di-boson and heavy flavour backgrounds, at 14 TeV centre-of-mass energy is then performed. It is shown that a small excess of same-sign dilepton events from double parton scattering over a background…
The specific effects of the reflective scattering (antishadowing) related to the spin correlations in the top quark production at the LHC are considered. Account for those effects is important in the searches for the signatures of the extra dimensiones. It is shown that significant spin correlations could arise at the LHC energies due to reflective scattering and those can affect the signals of the extra dimensions.
In this manuscript, we study the LHC signatures of a non-standard heavy neutral Higgs boson H at the 14 TeV LHC model-independently by taking the anomalous HVV coupling constants in the possible range obtained in our previous paper, Ref.[1]. We suggest WW scattering and VH associated production as two sensitive processes for detecting H, and the latter is more sensitive than the former. The study is at the hadron level with signals and backgrounds carefully calculated. Certain kinematic cuts are proposed to suppress the backgrounds effectively. We take several values of the heavy Higgs masses …
We investigate the Beyond Standard Model discovery potential in the framework of the Effective Field Theory (EFT) for the same-sign $WW$ scattering process in purely leptonic $W$ decay modes at the High-Luminosity and High-Energy phases of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The goal of this paper is to examine the applicability of the EFT approach, with one dimension-8 operator varied at a time, to describe a hypothetical new physics signal in the $WWWW$ quartic coupling. In the considered process there is no experimental handle on the $WW$ invariant mass, and it has previously been shown that t…
We discuss the possible signals of the degenerate BESS model at the LHC. This model describes a strongly interacting scenario responsible of the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry. It predicts two triplets of extra gauge bosons which are almost degenerate in mass. Due to this feature, the model has the property of decoupling and therefore, at low energies (below or of the order of $100 GeV$) it is nearly indistinguishable from the Standard Model. However the new resonances, both neutral and charged, should give quite spectacular signals at the LHC, where the c.o.m. energy will al…
We study the effects of the extended electroweak gauge sector on the signal strengths of the Higgs boson at the LHC. Extension of the Higgs sector associate with the extension of the electroweak gauge symmetry. In our setup, there are two neutral Higgs states ($h$, $H$) and three new gauge bosons ($W'^{\pm}$, $Z'$). We assume the lightest scalar, $h$, is what LHC found and its mass is 125 GeV. We find the enhancement of $μ(gg \to h \to γγ)$. On the other hand, other decay processes are same as or smaller than the SM expectation.
Light states associated with the hierarchy problem affect the Higgs LHC production and decays. We illustrate this within the MSSM and two simple extensions applying the latest bounds from LHC Higgs searches. Large deviations in the Higgs properties are expected in a natural SUSY spectrum. The discovery of a non-Standard-Model Higgs may signal the presence of light stops accessible at the LHC. Conversely, the more the Higgs is Standard-Model-like, the more tuned the theory becomes. Taking the ratio of different Higgs decay channels at the LHC cancels the leading QCD uncertainties and potentiall…
We explore the ΔL=2 same-sign dilepton signal from top-quark decay via a Majorana neutrino at the LHC in the top anti-top pair production samples. The signature is same-sign dilepton plus multi-jets with no significant missing energy. The most optimistic region lies where the Majorana neutrino mass is between 15-65 GeV. For 300 fb^-1 integrated luminosity, it is possible to probe S_{ij}, the effective mixing parameter, to order of 10^-5.
We show that the broad transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson produced by WW fusion can provide a viable way to identify H --> b anti-b decays at the LHC, if particular kinematical configurations with large rapidity gaps are selected. We estimate the event rate of the signal and of the QCD b anti-b background. We also discuss Higgs boson detection via the H --> tau tau and H --> WW* decay modes.
We study the signal rates of the second lightest CP-even Higgs boson, $h_2$, of the NMSSM produced in gluon fusion, in association with bottom quarks and in association with top quarks, which is not the SM-like Higgs boson, at the LHC. We evaluate the production rates of the $h_2$ in the SM fermionic and bosonic final states in addition to $a_1a_1$, $h_1h_1$ and $Za_1$ final states. It is observed that the size of the signal rates in some regions of the NMSSM parameter space is quite large and that could help extracting the $h_2$ signals at the LHC through a variety of decay channels.
We present a new way to define and compute the maximum significance achievable for signal and background processes at the LHC, using all available phase space information. As an example, we show that a light Higgs boson produced in weak--boson fusion with a subsequent decay into muons can be extracted from the backgrounds. The method, aimed at phenomenological studies, can be incorporated in parton--level event generators and accommodate parametric descriptions of detector effects for selected observables.
