We present state-of-the-art predictions for off-shell $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production with di-lepton decays at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Results are accurate at NLO in QCD and include all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and finite-width effects for top quarks and $W$ bosons. We discuss the impact of QCD corrections and assess theoretical uncertainties from scale and PDF dependence at the integrated and differential level. Additionally we investigate the size of contributions induced by initial-state $b$ quarks to the NLO cross section.
Two theoretical descriptions of exclusive diffractive jets and Higgs production at the LHC were implemented into the FPMC generator: the Khoze, Martin, Ryskin model and the Cudell, Hernández, Ivanov, Dechambre exclusive model. We then study the uncertainties. We compare their predictions to the CDF measurement and discuss the possibility of constraining the exclusive Higgs production at the LHC with early measurements of exclusive jets. We show that the present theoretical uncertainties can be reduced with such data by a factor of 5.
We compute the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons at the LHC at a fully-exclusive level. We also include the factorised NLO QCD correction to $Z$ boson production and NLO QED correction to $Z$ boson decay into two leptons. We make use of an abelianised version of the nested soft-collinear subtraction formalism to perform this computation. We study the phenomenological impact of the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections for a number of observables relevant for LHC phenomenology.
We present updated nCTEQ nuclear parton distribution functions with errors including pion production data from RHIC. We compare them with the results of other groups and present selected LHC applications.
We study uncertainties of the predicted inclusive Higgs production cross section due to the uncertainties of parton distribution functions (PDF). Particular attention is given to bbH Yukawa coupling enhanced production mechanisms in beyond SM scenarios, such as MSSM. The PDF uncertainties are determined by the robust Lagrange Multiplier method within the CTEQ global analysis framework. We show that PDF uncertainties dominate over theoretical uncertainties of the perturbative calculation (usually estimated by the scale dependence of the calculated cross sections), except for low Higgs masses at…
We present predictions for relevant LHC observables obtained with the NNPDF2.0 set. We compute the combined PDFs uncertainties on these observables, and show that combining errors in quadrature yields an excellent approximation to exact error propagation. We then compare the NNPDF2.0 results to the other global PDF fits using a common value of $α_s$. At LHC 7 TeV, reasonable agreement, both in central values and in uncertainties, is found for NNPDF2.0, CTEQ6.6 and MSTW08.
The experimental errors in current and future hadron colliders are expected to decrease to a level that will challenge the uncertainties in the theoretical calculations. One important component in the prediction uncertainties comes from the Parton Density Functions of the (anti)proton. In this work we develop an interface from the Les Houches Accord Parton Density Functions (LHAPDF) package to the very popular Monte Carlo generator {\tt PYTHIA} version 6.2. Then we proceed to estimate the PDF uncertainties for the production of Drell-Yan pairs from the Z pole to masses above 1 $\TeV$ and for H…
In this contribution we discuss the impact of PDF uncertainties on t\bar{t} and t-channel single-top production at the LHC. We present predictions for total cross-sections computed at NLO accuracy with different PDF sets. For single- top production, we point out that the uncertainty arising from the choice of the bottom quark mass is one of the dominant theoretical uncertainties on the total cross-section. Finally, the possibility of using PDF induced correlations between top quark and electroweak vector boson production cross-sections to improve the accuracy of LHC measurements is investigate…
Present status of experimental studies of inelastic diffraction at the Large Hadron Collider is analysed. Impact of the current uncertainties concerning the diffraction rate on the predicted extensive air shower development is investigated. Relation to studies of the primary composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays is illustrated by comparing numerical simulation results to the data of the Telescope Array experiment on the distributions of the shower maximum position.
The LHC data will provide sensitivity to an unification of the couplings at low energies in the range $\sim$10-100 TeV. It is demonstrated in this note that the lack of knowledge on the proton structure, specifically its gluon distribution, can lower dramatically the sensitivity of bare cross section measurements to this physics. However, some more elaborated strategies could probably be developped to recover an important part of the sensitivity
At the LHC and at an ILC, serious studies of new physics benefit from a proper simulation of signals and backgrounds. Using supersymmetric sbottom pair production as an example, we show how multi-particle final states are necessary to properly describe off-shell effects induced by QCD, photon radiation, or by intermediate on-shell states. To ensure the correctness of our findings we compare in detail the implementation of the supersymmetric Lagrangian in MadGraph, Sherpa and Whizard. As a future reference we give the numerical results for several hundred cross sections for the production of su…
A substantial off-shell Higgs boson signal in the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion H --> ZZ and H --> WW channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) facilitates a novel, complementary approach to constraining the total Higgs width Gamma_H. With LHC Run 1 data, experimental analyses by CMS and ATLAS find Gamma_H < 5.4 Gamma_H,SM and Gamma_H < [4.5,7.5] Gamma_H,SM at 95% confidence level, respectively, where Gamma_H,SM is the expected value in the Standard Model at the measured Higgs boson mass. I review the theoretical basis of the new approach and discuss its significance in comparison to …
The interesting but difficult phenomenology of supersymmetric models at the LHC and ILC demands a corresponding complexity and maturity from simulation tools. This includes multi-particle final states, reducible and irreducible backgrounds, spin correlations, real emission of photons and gluons, virtual corrections etc. Most of these topics are included in the multi-particle Monte Carlo (MC) Event generators Madgraph, WHIZARD and Sherpa. A comparison of these codes is shown, with a special focus on the new release of WHIZARD. I show examples for the necessity of considering full matrix element…
We report on state-of-the-art theoretical predictions for $pp\to t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ including full off-shell effects in the di-lepton decay channel at NLO QCD accuracy. We briefly discuss the impact of NLO QCD corrections on differential distributions and also asses theoretical uncertainties from scale and PDF dependence. Furthermore, we propose a simple kinematic reconstruction in order to distinguish $b$ jets originating from top-quark decays from arising from gluon splittings.
A short summary of results for top-quark pair production in association with a jet with NLO QCD off-shell effects at the LHC is given. The calculation is based on the matrix element for the $pp \to e^+ ν_e μ^-\barν_μb\bar{b} j$ process. All quantum effects are properly accounted for, which amounts to including all Feynman diagrams that result in this final state with interference effects as well as non-zero top-quark width effects. Results for total cross sections and a few differential distributions at the LHC Run1 energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV are presented. In addition, the size of top-quark o…
A brief summary of the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the process pp -> e+ ve mu- v_mu bb~ j + X is reported. This provides a complete description of the process of t-tbar + jet production with leptonic decays beyond the narrow-width approximation. Off-shell effects for top quarks and W boson decays are fully taken into account, namely all resonant and non-resonant contributions are included in the fixed-order calculation. Selected results for total and differential cross sections are shown for the case of the LHC Run I at the energy of 8 TeV.
The precision measurement of the W boson mass allows to perform stringent consistency tests of the Standard Model by means of global electroweak fits. The accurate determination of the W boson mass is one of the legacy results of the Tevatron, where the experimental accuracy is such that $M_W$ is now limited by theoretical uncertainties related to the parton distributions of the proton. In this contribution, we show how to quantify the impact of PDF uncertainties in the measurement of $M_W$ at the Tevatron and the LHC by means of a template method, and study both the use of the W transverse ma…
The high luminosity that will be accumulated at the LHC will enable precise differential measurements of the hadronic production of a top--antitop-quark pair in association with a $\text{W}$ boson. Therefore, an accurate description of this process is needed for realistic final states. In this work we combine for the first time the NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to the full off-shell $\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}{\text{W}}^+$ production at the LHC in the three-charged-lepton channel, including all spin correlations, non-resonant effects, and interferences. To this end, we have computed the…
For the first time the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to the full off-shell production of two top quarks that decay leptonically are presented. This calculation includes all off-shell, non-resonant, and interference effects for the 6-particle phase space. While the electroweak corrections are below one per cent for the integrated cross section, they reach up to 15% in the high-transverse-momentum region of distributions. To support the results of the complete one-loop calculation, we have in addition evaluated the electroweak corrections in two different pole approximations, one…
The production of a single top quark in association with a $\mathrm{Z}$ boson ($\mathrm{t}\mathrm{Z}\mathrm{j}$ production) at the LHC is a relevant probe of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model as well as a window to possible new-physics effects. The growing experimental interest in performing differential measurements for this process demands an improved theoretical modelling in realistic fiducial regions. In this article we present an NLO-accurate $\mathrm{t}\mathrm{Z}\mathrm{j}$ calculation that includes complete off-shell effects and spin correlations, combining QCD and electrowea…
We study the sources of systematic errors in the measurement of the W to lepton and neutrino cross-sections at the LHC. We consider the systematic errors in both the total cross-section and acceptance for anticipated experimental cuts. We include the best available analysis of QCD effects at NNLO in assessing the effect of higher order corrections and PDF and scale uncertainties on the theoretical acceptance. In addition, we evaluate the error due to missing NLO electroweak corrections and propose which MC generators and computational schemes should be implemented to best simulate the events.
Precision studies of the properties of the top quark represent a cornerstone of the LHC physics program. In this contribution we focus on the production of $t\bar{t}$ pairs in association with one hard jet and in particular on its connection with precision measurements of the top quark mass at the LHC. We report a summary of a full calculation of the process $pp \to e^+ν_eμ^-\barν_μb \bar{b}j$ at NLO QCD accuracy, which describes $t\bar{t}j$ production with leptonic decays beyond the Narrow Width Approximation (NWA), and discuss the impact of the off-shell effects through comparisons with NWA.…
The MadAnalysis 5 framework can be used to assess the potential of various LHC analyses for unravelling any specific new physics signal. We present an extension of the LHC reinterpretation capabilities of the programme allowing for the inclusion of theoretical and systematical uncertainties on the signal in the reinterpretation procedure. We have implemented extra methods dedicated to the extrapolation of the impact of a given analysis to higher luminosities, including various options for the treatment of the errors. As an application, we study three classes of new physics models. We first foc…
Uncertainties on low-$x$ PDFs are crucial for the standard model benchmark processes of $W$ and $Z$ production at the LHC. The current level of PDF uncertainty is critically reviewed and the possibility of reducing this uncertainty using early LHC data is investigated taking into account realistic expectations for measurement accuracy, kinematic cuts and backgrounds.
The precise measurement of the top-quark mass constitutes one of the main goals of the LHC top-quark physics program. One possibility to extract this parameter uses the $ρ_{\mathrm{s}}$ distribution, which depends on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$ system. To fully take advantage of the experimental accuracy achievable in measuring top quark production cross sections at the LHC, the theory uncertainties need to be well under control. We present a study of the effect of varying the input parameters of the theoretical calculation on the predicted $ρ_{\mathrm{s}}$ distribution. Thereby we s…
We study the sources of systematic errors in the measurement of the Z to ll cross-sections at the LHC.
We present state-of-the-art predictions for $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}Z(Z \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell)$ production in the fully leptonic channel at the LHC. The first process can provide key information on the strength and structure of the top-quark coupling to the photon. The invisible-decay channel $t\bar{t}Z(Z \to ν_\ell\barν_\ell)$ is an important SM background for Dark Matter searches in $t\bar{t}+E_{T}^{miss}$ final states. Our results are accurate to NLO in QCD and include all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects for top quarks and $W/Z$ bosons. As such, they …
We present a comprehensive study of the production of top quark pairs in association with one hard jet in the di-lepton decay channel at the LHC. Our predictions, accurate at NLO in QCD, focus on the LHC Run II with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. All resonant and non-resonant contributions at the perturbative order ${\cal O}(α_s^4 α^4)$ are taken into account, including irreducible backgrounds to $t\bar{t}j$ production, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark and the $W$ gauge boson. We extensively investigate the dependence of our results upon variation of renormalisation and…
The importance of off-shell contributions is discussed for $H\to VV^{(*)}$ with $V\in\{Z,W\}$ for large invariant masses $m_{VV}$ involving a standard model (SM)-like Higgs boson with $m_H=125$GeV at a linear collider (LC). Both dominant production processes $e^+e^-\to ZH\to ZVV^{(*)}$ and $e^+e^-\toν\barνH\toν\barνVV^{(*)}$ are taken into account, and the signal processes are compared with background yielding the same final state. The relative size of the off-shell contributions is strongly dependent on the centre-of-mass energy. These contributions can have an important impact on the determi…
We compute the hadronic production of top-antitop pairs in association with a Higgs boson at next-to-leading-order QCD, including the decay of the top and antitop quark into bottom quarks and leptons. Our computation is based on full leading and next-to-leading-order matrix elements for $e^+ ν_e μ^-\barν_μb \bar{b} H(j)$ and includes all non-resonant contributions, off-shell effects and interferences. Numerical results for the integrated cross section and several differential distributions are given for the LHC operating at 13 TeV using a fixed and a dynamical factorization and renormalization…
We describe a coherent strategy and set of tools for reconstructing the fundamental theory of the TeV scale from LHC data. We show that On-Shell Effective Theories (OSETs) effectively characterize hadron collider data in terms of masses, production cross sections, and decay modes of candidate new particles. An OSET description of the data strongly constrains the underlying new physics, and sharply motivates the construction of its Lagrangian. Simulating OSETs allows efficient analysis of new-physics signals, especially when they arise from complicated production and decay topologies. To this e…
The Higgs boson with a mass $M_H \approx 126$ GeV has been observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC and a total significance of about five standard deviations has been reported by both collaborations when the channels $H\to γγ$ and $H\to ZZ \to 4\ell$ are combined. Nevertheless, while the rates in the later search channel appear to be in accord with those predicted in the Standard Model, there seems to be an excess of data in the case of the $H\to γγ$ discovery channel. Before invoking new physics contributions to explain this excess in the di--photon Higgs rate, one should verify …
We propose a scheme to assign a 4-momentum to each WIMP in new physics event producing a pair of mother particles each of which decays to an invisible weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) plus some visible particle(s). The transverse components are given by the value that determines the event variable M_T2, while the longitudinal component is determined by the on-shell condition on the mother particle. Although it does not give the true WIMP momentum in general, this M_T2-assisted on-shell reconstruction of missing momenta provides kinematic variables well correlated to the true WIMP mom…
Using Tevatron bounds we derive upper limits on the LHC Higgs production rate under the assumption that no beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles are being produced near their mass shell. A violation of these limits would constitute a smoking gun for light BSM particles. Furthermore, we demonstrate how R_T, the ratio of the partially integrated Higgs transverse momentum distribution to the inclusive rate, can also be used as a probe of light BSM particles. This ratio is insensitive to heavy virtual effects and can be well-approximated by its SM value, i.e. it is model independent. The pertu…
We study the simplifications occurring in any likelihood function in the presence of a large number of small systematic uncertainties. We find that the marginalisation of these uncertainties can be done analytically by means of second-order error propagation, error combination, the Lyapunov central limit theorem, and under mild approximations which are typically satisfied for LHC likelihoods. The outcomes of this analysis are i) a very light treatment of systematic uncertainties ii) a convenient way of reporting the main effects of systematic uncertainties such as the detector effects occuring…
Event generation for the LHC can be supplemented by generative adversarial networks, which generate physical events and avoid highly inefficient event unweighting. For top pair production we show how such a network describes intermediate on-shell particles, phase space boundaries, and tails of distributions. In particular, we introduce the maximum mean discrepancy to resolve sharp local features. It can be extended in a straightforward manner to include for instance off-shell contributions, higher orders, or approximate detector effects.
The correlation of on- and off-shell Higgs boson production at the LHC in $gg \to h^* \to ZZ$ to bound the Higgs width, under specific model-dependent assumptions, has recently received a lot of attention. As off-shell cross section measurements in this channel suffer from a small signal yield, large backgrounds, and theoretical uncertainties, we propose an alternative complementary constraint which is only possible through the combination of LEP and LHC measurements. Previous precision electroweak measurements at LEP allow for the determination of indirect constraints on Higgs couplings to ve…
Precision electroweak tests are a powerful probe of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the sensitivity is limited by the precision with which the $W$ boson mass ($M_W$) has been measured. The Parton Distribution Function (PDF) uncertainties are a potential limitation for measurements of $M_W$ with LHC data. It has recently been pointed out that, thanks to LHCb's unique forward rapidity acceptance, a new measurement of $M_W$ by LHCb can improve this situation. Here we report on a detailed study on the mechanism driving the PDF uncertainty in the LHCb measurement of $M_W$, and propose an app…
We analyse same sign dilepton signatures in a non-universal flavor changing Z' model. These arise due to tt (or t_bar t_bar) production processes due to the semi-leptonic decays of (anti)tops. We also discuss top reconstruction and spin measurement using the variable MT2 and MT2-Assisted On-Shell (MAOS) Momentum} techniques and will also provide a comparison with the on-shell mass relation method. Sensitivities to the flavor-changing top coupling has also been estimated for different LHC energies and projected LHC luminosities corresponding to them.
Main theoretical uncertainties in estimating the indirect production of $(b\bar{c})$-quarkonium ($B^-_c$ meson and its excited states) via top quark decays, $t\to (b\bar{c})+c+W^{+}$, are studied within the non-relativistic QCD framework. It is found that the dimensionless reduced decay width for a particular $(b\bar{c})$-quarkonium state, $\barΓ_{n}=Γ_{n} /Γ_{t\to W^{+}+b}$, is very sensitive to the $c$-quark mass, while the uncertainties from the $b$-quark and $t$-quark masses are small, where $n$ stands for the eight $(b\bar{c})$-quarkonium states up to ${\cal O}(v^4)$: $|(b\bar{c})(^1S_0)_…
We resum a class of large Sudakov logarithms affecting Higgs boson production in the exclusive one-jet bin at the LHC. We extend previous results by calculating the full one-loop soft function for this process, which extends the accuracy of the resummation to include the leading three logarithmic corrections at each order in the QCD coupling constant. We match this result to the next-to-leading order cross section and present a detailed numerical study assuming realistic LHC cuts. Careful attention is paid to the matching procedure, and to the theoretical uncertainties induced by residual scal…
We review several most recent prompt-photon measurements at HERA and the Tevatron and discuss their implication for future measurements at the LHC. A comparison to Monte Carlo models, as well as to NLO QCD predictions based on the standard DGLAP and the kT-factorization approaches is discussed. Effects from renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties, as well as uncertainties on the gluon density distribution inside a proton are discussed.
I consider the effects of including a variety of new LHC data sets into the MMHT approach for PDF determination. I consider the impact of fitting new LHC and Tevatron data, which leads to clear improvements in some PDF uncertainties. There are specific issues with ATLAS 7 TeV jet data and I include a discussion of the treatment of correlated uncertainties and briefly the effects of NNLO corrections. I also present preliminary results with the inclusion of the high precison final ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ rapidity-dependent data.
We study nuclear effects of charged current deep inelastic neutrino-iron scattering in the framework of a chi^2 analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs). We extract a set of iron PDFs which are used to compute x_Bj-dependent and Q^2-dependent nuclear correction factors for iron structure functions which are required in global analyses of free nucleon PDFs. We compare our results with nuclear correction factors from neutrino-nucleus scattering models and correction factors for charged lepton-iron scattering. We find that, except for very high x_Bj, our correction factors differ in both …
In these proceedings, next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections to ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to {\rm e}^+ ν_{\rm e} μ^- \bar ν_μ{\rm b} \bar{\rm b} {\rm H}$ at the LHC are presented. In these computations the top quarks are considered off their mass shell and all non-resonant contributions are included. The results are presented in the form of fiducial cross sections and differential distributions. Moreover, two prescriptions to combine QCD and EW corrections are examined.
In the context of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) we examine the constraints on the trilinear Higgs coupling that originate from off-shell Higgs production in proton-proton collisions. Our calculation of the $gg \to h^\ast \to Z Z \to 4 \ell$ process includes two-loop corrections to gluon-gluon-fusion Higgs production and one-loop corrections to the Higgs propagator and its decay. Employing a matrix-element based kinematic discriminant we determine the reach of LHC Run 3 and the high-luminosity option of the LHC in constraining the relevant SMEFT Wilson coefficients. We prese…
Standard Model $ZZ$ production is an important background for many searches at the LHC, especially in final states with missing transverse momentum. In this article, boson substitution is applied to estimate $ZZ \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^- ν\barν$ yields from $Zγ\rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^- γ$ events. The cross-section ratio of the two processes and its uncertainties are evaluated at NNLO with the MATRIX generator as a function of the transverse momentum of the substituted boson. Uncertainties due to higher-order QCD corrections, parton distribution functions, photon isolation criteria, and electro…
The foreseen luminosities for the next LHC runs will enable precise differential measurements of the associated production of top-antitop pairs with a W boson. Therefore, providing accurate theory predictions for this process is needed for realistic final states. We present the first combination of NLO electroweak and QCD corrections to off-shell ttW$^+$ production in the three-charged-lepton channel, including non-resonant effects, full spin-correlations and interferences. Such radiative corrections comprise the electroweak and QCD corrections to the leading QCD order, and the QCD corrections…
We review the status of the QCD corrected cross sections and kinematic distributions for the production of a Higgs boson in association with top quark or bottom quark pairs at the Fermilab Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for b-bbar-H production are presented in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model, where the rates can be greatly enhanced relative to the Standard Model rates. We place particular emphasis on theoretical uncertainties due to renormalization and factorization scale dependence and on the uncertainties coming from the Parton Distribution Functions.
Strong interaction physics will be ubiquitous at the Large Hadron Collider since the colliding beams consist of confined quarks and gluons. Although the main purpose of the LHC is to study the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and to search for physics beyond the Standard Model, to maximise the precision and sensitivity of such anaylses it is necessary to understand in detail various perturbative, semi-perturbative and non-perturbative QCD effects. Many of these effects have been extensively studied at HERA and will be studied further at HERA II. We discuss the impact of the knowledge…
The precision measurement of the W boson mass is an important milestone for the LHC physics program in the coming years. An accurate measurement of $M_W$ allows to perform stringent consistency tests of the Standard Model by means of global electroweak fits, which in turn are sensitive to New Physics at scales potentially higher than the ones explored in direct searches. From the theoretical point of view, our limited knowledge of PDFs will be one of the dominant sources of uncertainty in ongoing and future LHC determinations of $M_W$. In this whitepaper, we have quantified the impact of PDF u…
The charge asymmetry in W + jets production at the LHC can serve to calibrate the presence of New Physics contributions. We study the ratio σ(W^+ + n jets)/σ(W^- + n jets) in the Standard Model for n <= 4, paying particular attention to the uncertainty in the prediction from higher-order perturbative corrections and uncertainties in parton distribution functions. We show that these uncertainties are generally of order a few percent, making the experimental measurement of the charge asymmetry ratio a particularly useful diagnostic tool for New Physics contributions.
The uncertainties in estimating the hadronic production of the $B_c$ meson are studied under the framework of the complete $α_s^4$ approach of the perturbative QCD and the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism. Quantitative comparisons on the production at TEVATRON and LHC are made. Considering the detectors at TEVATRON and LHC, we have also estimated the production with proper kinematic cuts. Based on the results, we conclude that the experimental studies of the $B_c$ meson at the two colliders will be complimentary and stimulative. We find that as c.m. energy is increasing from RUN-I to RUN-II at TEV…
A major focus at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be Higgs boson studies and it would be an interesting prospect to simultaneously probe for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the Higgs signals. In this work we show as to what extent, the effects of Universal Extra Dimension (UED) can be isolated at the LHC through the Higgs signals. By doing a detailed study of the different uncertainties involved in the measurement of the rates for the process pp --> h --> gamma gamma we estimate the extent to which these uncertainties can mask the effects of the contributions coming from UED.
A brief summary of the recent next-to-leading order QCD calculation for e+ ve mu- v_mu bb~ j at the LHC is given. Our computation includes all non-resonant contributions, off-shell effects and interferences for top-quarks and W gauge bosons. Some results for integrated and differential cross sections are shown for the LHC Run1 energy of 8 TeV. A significant reduction of the scale dependence is observed, which indicates that the perturbative expansion is well under control. The results are obtained in the framework of the HELAC-NLO system.
W and Z bosons will be produced copiously at the LHC proton-proton collider. We study the parton distribution dependence of the total production cross sections and rapidity distributions, paying particular attention to the uncertainties arising from uncertainties in the parton distributions themselves. Variations in the gluon, the strong coupling, the sea quarks and the overall normalisation are shown to lead to small but non-negligible variations in the cross section predictions. Ultimately, therefore, the measurement of these cross sections will provide a powerful cross check on our knowledg…
Precision determinations of Standard Model (SM) Electro-Weak (EW) parameters at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are dominated by uncertainties due to Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). Reweighting and profiling techniques are routinely employed to treat this. We explore approaches based on combining measurements of charged current and neutral current Drell-Yan (DY) asymmetries to improve PDF uncertainties. We present the results of a numerical analysis performed with the open-source platform xFitter. PDF uncertainties are examined for lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries in region…
The LHC has the potential not only to discover supersymmetry (SUSY), but also to permit fairly precise measurements of at least a portion of the sparticle spectrum. Proposed mass reconstruction methods rely upon either inverting invariant mass endpoint expressions or upon solving systems of mass-shell equations. These methodologies suffer from the weakness that one certain specific sparticle decay chain is assumed to account for all the events in the sample. Taking two examples of techniques utilizing mass-shell equations, it is found that also applying the wedgebox technique allows for the is…
