Aiming for more realistic optimal dividend policies, we consider a stochastic control problem with linearly bounded control rates using a performance function given by the expected present value of dividend payments made up to ruin. In a Brownian model, we prove the optimality of a member of a new family of control strategies called delayed linear control strategies, for which the controlled process is a refracted diffusion process. For some parameters specifications, we retrieve the strategy initially proposed by Avanzi & Wong (2012) to regularize dividend payments, which is more consistent with actual practice.
If we compose a smooth function g with fractional Brownian motion B with Hurst index H > 1/2, then the resulting change of variables formula [or It/^o- formula] has the same form as if fractional Brownian motion would be a continuous function with bounded variation. In this note we prove a new integral representation formula for the running maximum of a continuous function with bounded variation. Moreover we show that the analogue to fractional Brownian motion fails.
The space-time distribution, $Q_A(x,dt dξ)$ say, of Brownian hitting of a bounded Borel set $A$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidian space is studied. We derive the asymptotic form of the leading term of the time-derivative $Q_A(x, dtdξ)/dt$ for each $d =2, 3, ...$, valid uniformly with respect to the starting point $x$ of the Brownian motion, which result extends significantly the classical results for $Q_A(x, dt dξ)$ itself by Hunt ($d=2$), Joffe and Spitzer ($d= 3, 4,...$). The results are applied to find the asymptotic form of the expected volume of Wiener sausage for the Brownian bridge joini…
We consider an n-dimensional Brownian Motion trapped inside a bounded convex set by normally-reflecting boundaries. It is well-known that this process is uniformly ergodic. However, the rates of this ergodicity are not well-understood, especially in the regime of very high-dimensional sets. Here we present new bounds on these rates for convex sets with a given diameter. Our bounds do not depend upon the smoothness of the boundary nor the value of the ambient dimension, n.
Let $τ_{D}(Z) $ is the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$ started at $z\in D$ and let $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ be its distribution. In this paper we establish the exact asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ over bounded domains as an extension of the result in DeBlassie \cite{deblassie}, for $z\in D$ $$ P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]\approx t^{1/2} \exp(-{3/2}π^{2/3}λ_{D}^{2/3}t^{1/3}), as t\to\infty . $$ We also study asymptotics of the life time of Brownian-time Brownian motion (BTBM), $Z^{1}_{t}=z+X(Y(t))$, where $X_{t}$ and $Y_{t}$ are independent one-dimensional…
We consider a model of Brownian motion on a bounded open interval with instantaneous jumps. The jumps occur at a spatially dependent rate given by a positive parameter times a continuous function positive on the interval and vanishing on its boundary. At each jump event the process is redistributed uniformly in the interval. We obtain sharp asymptotic bounds on the principal eigenvalue for the generator of the process as the parameter tends to infinity. Our work answers a question posed by Arcusin and Pinsky.
We study the density of the support of a dyadic $d$-dimensional branching Brownian motion (BBM) in subcritical balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Using elementary geometric arguments and an extension of a previous result on the probability of absence of the support of BBM in linearly moving balls of fixed size, we obtain sharp asymptotic results on the degree of density of the support of BBM in subcritical balls. As corollaries, we obtain almost sure results about the large-time behavior of $r(t)$-enlargement of the support of BBM when the shrinking radius $r(t)$ is decaying sufficiently slowly. As a by…
In this paper we study the discrete approximation to Brownian motion with varying dimension (BMVD in abbreviation) introduced in [4] by continuous time random walks on square lattices. The state space of BMVD contains a $2$-dimensional component, a $3$-dimensional component, and a "darning point" which joins these two components. Such a state space is equipped with the geodesic distance, under which BMVD is a diffusion process. In this paper, we prove that BMVD restricted on a bounded domain containing the darning point is the weak limit of continuous time reversible random walks with exponent…
A geometric Brownian motion with delay is the solution of a stochastic differential equation where the drift and diffusion coefficient depend linearly on the past of the solution, i.e. a linear stochastic functional differential equation. In this work the asymptotic behavior in mean square of a geometric Brownian motion with delay is completely characterized by a sufficient and necessary condition in terms of the drift and diffusion coefficients.
We establish a boundary Harnack principle for a large class of subordinate Brownian motion, including mixtures of symmetric stable processes, in bounded $κ$-fat open set (disconnected analogue of John domains). As an application of the boundary Harnack principle, we identify the Martin boundary and the minimal Martin boundary of bounded $κ$-fat open sets with respect to these processes with their Euclidean boundary.
Minimal thinness is a notion that describes the smallness of a set at a boundary point. In this paper, we provide tests for minimal thinness for a large class of subordinate killed Brownian motions in bounded C1,1 domains, C1,1 domains with compact complements and domains above graphs of bounded C1,1 functions.
In this paper we investigate three discrete or semi-discrete approximation schemes for reflected Brownian motion on bounded Euclidean domains. For a class of bounded domains $D$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ that includes all bounded Lipschitz domains and the von Koch snowflake domain, we show that the laws of both discrete and continuous time simple random walks on $D\cap2^{-k}\mathbb{Z}^n$ moving at the rate $2^{-2k}$ with stationary initial distribution converge weakly in the space $\mathbf{D}([0,1],\mathbb{R}^n)$, equipped with the Skorokhod topology, to the law of the stationary reflected Brownian mo…
Based on the classical probability, the stability criteria for stochastic differential delay equations (SDDEs) where their coefficients are either linear or nonlinear but bounded by linear functions have been investigated intensively. Moreover, the dependent stability of the highly nonlinear hybrid stochastic differential equations is recently studied. In this paper, by using the nonlinear expectation theory, we explore the dependent stability of a class of highly nonlinear hybrid stochastic differential delay equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-SDDEs). Firstly, we give preliminaries …
We study the transition density of a standard two-dimensional Brownian motion killed when hitting a bounded Borel set $A$. We derive the asymptotic form of the density, say $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$, for large times $t$ and for ${\bf x}$ and ${\bf y}$ in the exterior of $A$ valid uniformly under the constraint $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}| =O(t)$. Within the parabolic regime $|{\bf x}|\vee |{\bf y}| = O(\sqrt t)$ in particular $p^A_t({\bf x},{\bf y})$ is shown to behave like $4e_A({\bf x})e_A({\bf y}) (\lg t)^{-2} p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ for large $t$, where $p_t({\bf y}-{\bf x})$ is the transition ke…
We study co-adapted couplings of (canonical hypoelliptic) diffu-sions on the (subRiemannian) Heisenberg group, that we call (Heisenberg) Brow-nian motions and are the joint laws of a planar Brownian motion with its L{é}vy area. We show that contrary to the situation observed on Riemannian manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature, for any co-adapted coupling, two Heisenberg Brownian motions starting at two given points can not stay at bounded distance for all time t $\ge$ 0. Actually, we prove the stronger result that they can not stay bounded in L p for p $\ge$ 2. We also study the coupling b…
We examine the behavior of $n$ Brownian particles diffusing on the real line with bounded, measurable drift and bounded, piecewise continuous diffusion coefficients that depend on the current configuration of particles. Sufficient conditions are established for the absence and for the presence of triple collisions among the particles. As an application to the Atlas model for equity markets, we study a special construction of such systems of diffusing particles using Brownian motions with reflection on polyhedral domains.
In this paper, we establish an oscillation estimate of nonnegative harmonic functions for a pure-jump subordinate Brownian motion. The infinitesimal generator of such subordinate Brownian motion is an integro-differential operator. As an application, we give a probabilistic proof of the following form of relative Fatou theorem for such subordinate Brownian motion X in bounded kappa-fat open set; if u is a positive harmonic function with respect to X in a bounded kappa-fat open set D and h is a positive harmonic function in D vanishing on D^c, then the non-tangential limit of u/h exists almost …
Recently, it has been shown in [Jentzen, A., Müller-Gronbach, T., and Yaroslavtseva, L., Commun. Math. Sci., 14, 2016] that there exists a system of autonomous stochastic differential equations (SDE) on the time interval $[0,T]$ with infinitely differentiable and bounded coefficients such that no strong approximation method based on evaluation of the driving Brownian motion at finitely many fixed times in $[0,T]$, e.g. on an equidistant grid, can converge in absolute mean to the solution at the final time with a polynomial rate in terms of the number of Brownian motion values that are used. In…
We construct obliquely reflected Brownian motions in all bounded simply connected planar domains, including non-smooth domains, with general reflection vector fields on the boundary. Conformal mappings and excursion theory are our main technical tools. A key intermediate step, which may be of independent interest, is an alternative characterization of reflected Brownian motions in smooth bounded planar domains with a given field of angles of oblique reflection on the boundary in terms of a pair of quantities, namely an integrable positive harmonic function, which represents the stationary dist…
Let v be a bounded function with bounded support in R^d, d>=3. Let x,y in R^d. Let Z(t) denote the path integral of v along the path of a Brownian bridge in R^d which runs for time t, starting at x and ending at y. As t->infty, it is perhaps evident that the distribution of Z(t) converges weakly to that of the sum of the integrals of v along the paths of two independent Brownian motions, starting at x and y and running forever. Here we prove a stronger result, namely convergence of the corresponding moment generating functions and of moments. This result is needed for applications in physics.
The signature of a path provides a top down description of the path in terms of its effects as a control [Differential Equations Driven by Rough Paths (2007) Springer]. The signature transforms a path into a group-like element in the tensor algebra and is an essential object in rough path theory. The expected signature of a stochastic process plays a similar role to that played by the characteristic function of a random variable. In [Chevyrev (2013)], it is proved that under certain boundedness conditions, the expected value of a random signature already determines the law of this random signa…
Consider the motion of a Brownian particle in three dimensions, whose two spatial coordinates are standard Brownian motions with zero drift, and the remaining (unknown) spatial coordinate is a standard Brownian motion with a non-zero drift. Given that the position of the Brownian particle is being observed in real time, the problem is to detect as soon as possible and with minimal probabilities of the wrong terminal decisions, which spatial coordinate has the non-zero drift. We solve this problem in the Bayesian formulation, under any prior probabilities of the non-zero drift being in any of t…
Let $ \{W(t), t\ge 0\}$ be a standard Brownian motion. If $I$ is a bounded interval on which $W $ has no zero, an almost sure lower bound to $\inf\{|W(t)|, t\in I\}$ can be provided, when $I$ is taken from a given countable family of intervals covering the positive half-line.
We study the Navier-Stokes equations on a smooth bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb R^d$ ($d=2$ or 3), under the effect of an additive fractional Brownian noise. We show local existence and uniqueness of a mild $L^p$-solution for $p>d$.
Benjamini, Burdzy and Chen (2007) introduced the notion of a shy coupling: a coupling of a Markov process such that, for suitable starting points, there is a positive chance of the two component processes of the coupling staying a positive distance away from each other for all time. Among other results, they showed no shy couplings could exist for reflected Brownian motions in C^2 bounded convex planar domains whose boundaries contain no line segments. Here we use potential-theoretic methods to extend this Benjamini et al. result (a) to all bounded convex domains (whether planar and smooth or …
The paper deals with some properties of set-valued functions having a bounded Riesz p-variation. Set-valued integrals of a Young type for such multifunctions are introduced. Selection results and properties of such setvalued integrals are discussed. These integrals contain as a particular case set-valued stochastic integrals with respect to a fractional Brownian motion, and therefore, their properties are crucial for the investigation of solutions to stochastic differential inclusions driven by a fractional Brownian motion.
In this paper we prove, for small Hurst parameters, the higher order differentiability of a stochastic flow associated with a stochastic differential equation driven by an additive multi-dimensional fractional Brownian noise, where the bounded variation part is given by the local time of the unknown solution process. The proof of this result relies on Fourier analysis based variational calculus techniques and on intrinsic properties of the fractional Brownian motion.
We analyze a deterministic form of the random walk on the integer line called the {\em liar machine}, similar to the rotor-router model, finding asymptotically tight pointwise and interval discrepancy bounds versus random walk. This provides an improvement in the best-known winning strategies in the binary symmetric pathological liar game with a linear fraction of responses allowed to be lies. Equivalently, this proves the existence of adaptive binary block covering codes with block length $n$, covering radius $\leq fn$ for $f\in(0,1/2)$, and cardinality $O(\sqrt{\log \log n}/(1-2f))$ times th…
In this paper, we study a two-point boundary value problem consisting of the heat equation on the open interval $(0,1)$ with boundary conditions which relate first and second spatial derivatives at the boundary points. Moreover, the unique solution to this problem can be represented probabilistically in terms of a sticky Brownian motion. This probabilistic representation is attained from the stochastic differential equation for a sticky Brownian motion on the bounded interval $[0,1]$.
We show that geodesic random walks on a complete Finsler manifold of bounded geometry converge to a diffusion process which is, up to a drift, the Brownian motion corresponding to a Riemannian metric.
For every bounded planar domain $D$ with a smooth boundary, we define a `Lyapunov exponent' $Λ(D)$ using a fairly explicit formula. We consider two reflected Brownian motions in $D$, driven by the same Brownian motion (i.e., a `synchronous coupling'). If $Λ(D)>0$ then the distance between the two Brownian particles goes to 0 exponentially fast with rate $Λ(D)/(2|D|)$ as time goes to infinity. The exponent $Λ(D)$ is strictly positive if the domain has at most one hole. It is an open problem whether there exists a domain with $Λ(D)<0$.
We introduce an extension of the frog model to Euclidean space and prove properties for the spread of active particles. Fix $r>0$ and place a particle at each point $x$ of a unit intensity Poisson point process $\mathcal P \subseteq \mathbb R^d - \mathbb B(0,r)$. Around each point in $\mathcal{P}$, put a ball of radius $r$. A particle at the origin performs Brownian motion. When it hits the ball around $x$ for some $x \in \mathcal P$, new particles begin independent Brownian motions from the centers of the balls in the cluster containing $x$. Subsequent visits to the cluster do nothing. This w…
We consider a gas of independent Brownian particles on a bounded interval in contact with two particle reservoirs at the endpoints. Due to the Brownian nature of the particles, infinitely many particles enter and leave the system in each time interval. Nonetheless, the dynamics can be constructed as a Markov process with continuous paths on a suitable space. If $λ_0$ and $λ_1$ are the chemical potentials of the boundary reservoirs, the stationary distribution (reversible if and only if $λ_0=λ_1$) is a Poisson point process with intensity given by the linear interpolation between $λ_0$ and $λ_1…
Diffusion in heterogeneous media partitioned by semi-permeable interfaces has a wide range of applications in the physical and life sciences, including gas permeation in soils, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI), drug delivery, thermal conduction in composite media, synaptic receptor trafficking, and intercellular gap junctions. At the single particle level, diffusion across a semi-permeable interface can be formulated in terms of so-called snapping out Brownian motion (SNOBM). The latter sews together successive rounds of reflected BM, each of which is restricted to one side of the i…
We rigorously derive non-equilibrium space-time fluctuation for the particle density of a system of reflected diffusions in bounded Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb R^d$. The particles are independent and are killed by a time-dependent potential which is asymptotically proportional to the boundary local time. We generalize the functional analytic framework introduced by Kotelenez [19, 20] to deal with time-dependent perturbations. Our proof relies on Dirichlet form method rather than the machineries derived from Kotelenez's sub-martingale inequality. Our result holds for any symmetric reflected d…
We introduce the class of vector measures of bounded $γ$-variation and study its relationship with vector-valued stochastic integrals with respect to Brownian motions.
We study the rate of concentration of a Brownian bridge in time one around the corresponding geodesical segment on a Cartan-Hadamard manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature, when the distance between the two extremities tends to infinity. This improves on previous results by A. Eberle, and one of us. Along the way, we derive a new asymptotic estimate for the logarithmic derivative of the heat kernel on such manifolds, in bounded time and with one space parameter tending to infinity, which can be viewed as a counterpart to Bismut's asymptotic formula in small time.
We construct and study the weak solution to stochastic differential equation $dX(t)=-b(X(t))dt+\sqrt{2}dW(t)$, $X_0=x$, for every $x \in \mathbb R^d$, $d \geq 3$, with $b$ in the class of weakly form-bounded vector fields, containing, as proper subclasses, a sub-critical class $[L^d+L^\infty]^d$, as well as critical classes such as weak $L^d$ class, Kato class, Campanato-Morrey class, Chang-Wilson-T. Wolff class.
In this paper we study Doob's transform of fractional Brownian motion (FBM). It is well known that Doob's transform of standard Brownian motion is identical in law with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion defined as the solution of the (stochastic) Langevin equation where the driving process is a Brownian motion. It is also known that Doob's transform of FBM and the process obtained from the Langevin equation with FBM as the driving process are different. However, also the first one of these can be described as a solution of a Langevin equation but now with some other driving process than FBM. We…

Let $N$ be a positive integer. We consider pseudo-Brownian motion $X=(X(t))_{t\ge 0}$ driven by the high-order heat-type equation $\partial/\partial t=(-1)^{N-1}\partial^{2N}/\partial x^{2N}$. Let us introduce the first exit time τab from a bounded interval $(a,b)$ by $X$ ($a,b\in\mathbb{R}$). In this paper, we provide a representation of the joint pseudo-distribution of the vector $(τ_{ab},X(τ_{ab}))$ by means of Vandermonde-like determinants. The method we use is based on the Feynman-Kac functional related to pseudo-Brownian motion which leads to a boundary value problem. In particular, the …
In this paper, we consider a product of a symmetric stable process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and a one-dimensional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^+$. Then we define a class of harmonic functions with respect to this product process. We show that bounded non-negative harmonic functions in the upper-half space satisfy Harnack inequality and prove that they are locally Hölder continuous. We also argue a result on Littlewood-Paley functions which are obtained by the $α$-harmonic extension of an $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ function.
We investigate the extent to which the phenomenon of Brownian entropic repulsion is universal. Consider a Brownian motion conditioned on the event $\mathcal{E}$ -- that its local time is bounded everywhere by 1. This event has probability zero and so must be approximated by events of positive probability. We prove that several natural quantities, in particular the speed of the process, are highly sensitive to the approximation procedure, and hence are not universal. However, we also propose an exponent $κ$ -- which measures the strength of the entropic repulsion by evaluating the probability t…
We prove strong existence and uniqueness for a reflection process $X$ in a smooth, bounded domain $D$ that behaves like obliquely-reflected-Brownian-motion, except that the direction of reflection depends on a (spin) parameter $S$, which only changes when $X$ is on the boundary of $D$ according to a physical rule. The process $(X,S)$ is a degenerate diffusion. We show uniqueness of the stationary distribution by using techniques based on excursions of $X$ from $\partial D$, and an associated exit system. We also show that the process admits a submartingale formulation and use related results t…
The strong convergence rate of the Euler scheme for SDEs driven by additive fractional Brownian motions is studied, where the fractional Brownian motion has Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac13,\frac12)$ and the drift coefficient is not required to be bounded. The Malliavin calculus, the rough path theory and the $2$D Young integral are utilized to overcome the difficulties caused by the low regularity of the fractional Brownian motion and the unboundedness of the drift coefficient. The Euler scheme is proved to have strong order $2H$ for the case that the drift coefficient has bounded derivatives up…
We consider the continuous time symmetric random walk with a slow bond on $\mathbb Z$, which rates are equal to $1/2$ for all bonds, except for the bond of vertices $\{-1,0\}$, which associated rate is given by $αn^{-β}/2$, where $α\geq 0$ and $β\in [0,\infty]$ are the parameters of the model. We prove here a functional central limit theorem for the random walk with a slow bond: if $β<1$, then it converges to the usual Brownian motion. If $β\in (1,\infty]$, then it converges to the reflected Brownian motion. And at the critical value $β=1$, it converges to the snapping out Brownian motion (SNO…
We consider a dynamic control problem associated with a generalized Brownian network, the objective being to minimize expected discounted cost over an infinite planning horizon. In this Brownian control problem (BCP), both the system manager's control and the associated cumulative cost process may be locally of unbounded variation. Due to this aspect of the cost process, both the precise statement of the problem and its analysis involve delicate technical issues. We show that the BCP is equivalent, in a certain sense, to a reduced Brownian control problem (RBCP) of lower dimension. The RBCP is…
We will consider the following stochastic differential equation (SDE): \begin{equation} X_t=X_0+\int_0^tb(X_s,θ_0)ds+σB_t,~~~t\in(0,T], \end{equation} where $\{B_t\}_{t\ge 0}$ is a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(1/2,1)$, $θ_0$ is a parameter that contains a bounded and open convex subset $Θ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $\{b(\cdot,θ),θ\inΘ\}$ is a family of drift coefficients with $b(\cdot,θ):\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$, and $σ\in\mathbb{R}$ is assumed to be the known diffusion coefficient.
The Brownian map is a random sphere-homeomorphic metric measure space obtained by "gluing together" the continuum trees described by the $x$ and $y$ coordinates of the Brownian snake. We present an alternative "breadth-first" construction of the Brownian map, which produces a surface from a certain decorated branching process. It is closely related to the peeling process, the hull process, and the Brownian cactus. Using these ideas, we prove that the Brownian map is the only random sphere-homeomorphic metric measure space with certain properties: namely, scale invariance and the conditional in…
In this paper we derive a Bismut-Elworthy-Li type formula with respect to strong solutions to singular stochastic differential equations (SDE's) with additive noise given by a multi-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H<1/2$. "Singular" here means that the drift vector field of such equations is allowed to be merely bounded and integrable. As an application we use this representation formula for the study of price sensitivities of financial claims based on a stock price model with stochastic volatility, whose dynamics is described by means of fractional Brownian motion…
