We show that there is genuine quantum chaos despite that quantum dynamics is linear. This is revealed by introducing a physical distance between two quantum states. Qualitatively different from existing distances for quantum states, for example, the Fubini-Study distance, the physical distance between two mutually orthogonal quantum states can be very small. As a result, two quantum states, which are initially very close by physical distance, can diverge from each other during the ensuing quantum dynamical evolution. We are able to use physical distance to define quantum Lyaponov exponent and quantum chaos measure. The latter leads to quantum analogue of the classical Poincaré section, which maps out the regions where quantum dynamics is regular and the regions where quantum dynamics is chaotic. Three different systems, kicked rotor, three-site Bose-Hubbard model, and spin-1/2 XXZ model, are used to illustrate our results.
Although highly successful, the Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA) does not account for genuine many-body quantum interference between different solutions of the mean-field equations of a bosonic many-body (MB) system. This renders the TWA essentially classical, where a large number of particles formally takes the role of the inverse of Planck's constant $\hbar$. The failure to describe genuine interference phenomena, such as localization and scarring in Fock space, can be seen as a virtue of this quasiclassical method, which thereby allows one to identify genuine quantum effects when being …
We present a genuine coherence measure based on a quasi-relative entropy as a difference between quasi-entropies of the dephased and the original states. The measure satisfies non-negativity and monotonicity under genuine incoherent operations (GIO). It is strongly monotone under GIO in two- and three-dimensions, or for pure states in any dimension, making it a genuine coherence monotone. We provide a bound on the error term in the monotonicity relation in terms of the trace distance between the original and the dephased states. Moreover, the lower bound on the coherence measure can also be ca…

Quantum chaos of many-body systems has been swiftly developing into a vibrant research area at the interface between various disciplines, ranging from statistical physics to condensed matter to quantum information and to cosmology. In quantum systems with a classical limit, advanced semiclassical methods provide the crucial link between classically chaotic dynamics and corresponding universal features at the quantum level. Recently, single-particle techniques dealing with ergodic wave interference in the usual semiclassical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$ have begun to be transformed into the fiel…
We present an extension of the chaos-assisted tunneling mechanism to spatially periodic lattice systems. We demonstrate that driving such lattice systems in an intermediate regime of modulation maps them onto tight-binding Hamiltonians with chaos-induced long-range hoppings $t_n \propto 1/n$ between sites at a distance $n$. We provide a numerical demonstration of the robustness of the results and derive an analytical prediction for the hopping term law. Such systems can thus be used to enlarge the scope of quantum simulations to experimentally realize long-range models of condensed matter.

The dynamics of open quantum systems can be described by a Liouvillian, which in the Markovian approximation fulfills the Lindblad master equation. We present a family of integrable many-body Liouvillians based on Richardson-Gaudin models with a complex structure of the jump operators. Making use of this new region of integrability, we study the transition to chaos in terms of a two-parameter Liouvillian. The transition is characterized by the spectral statistics of the complex eigenvalues of the Liouvillian operators using the nearest neighbor spacing distribution and by the ratios between ei…
A remarkable feature of chaos in many-body quantum systems is the existence of a bound on the quantum Lyapunov exponent. An important question is to understand what is special about maximally chaotic systems which saturate this bound. Here we provide further evidence for the `hydrodynamic' origin of chaos in such systems, and discuss hallmarks of maximally chaotic systems. We first provide evidence that a hydrodynamic effective field theory of chaos we previously proposed should be understood as a theory of maximally chaotic systems. We then emphasize and make explicit a signature of maximal c…
