While self-attention mechanism has shown promising results for many vision tasks, it only considers the current features at a time. We show that such a manner cannot take full advantage of the attention mechanism. In this paper, we present Deep Connected Attention Network (DCANet), a novel design that boosts attention modules in a CNN model without any modification of the internal structure. To achieve this, we interconnect adjacent attention blocks, making information flow among attention blocks possible. With DCANet, all attention blocks in a CNN model are trained jointly, which improves the ability of attention learning. Our DCANet is generic. It is not limited to a specific attention module or base network architecture. Experimental results on ImageNet and MS COCO benchmarks show that DCANet consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art attention modules with a minimal additional computational overhead in all test cases. All code and models are made publicly available.
Combining RGB images and the corresponding depth maps in semantic segmentation proves the effectiveness in the past few years. Existing RGB-D modal fusion methods either lack the non-linear feature fusion ability or treat both modal images equally, regardless of the intrinsic distribution gap or information loss. Here we find that depth maps are suitable to provide intrinsic fine-grained patterns of objects due to their local depth continuity, while RGB images effectively provide a global view. Based on this, we propose a pixel differential convolution attention (DCA) module to consider geomet…

Deep learning based methods have seen a massive rise in popularity for hyperspectral image classification over the past few years. However, the success of deep learning is attributed greatly to numerous labeled samples. It is still very challenging to use only a few labeled samples to train deep learning models to reach a high classification accuracy. An active deep-learning framework trained by an end-to-end manner is, therefore, proposed by this paper in order to minimize the hyperspectral image classification costs. First, a deep densely connected convolutional network is considered for hyp…

In this work, we present the Densely Connected Temporal Convolutional Network (DC-TCN) for lip-reading of isolated words. Although Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN) have recently demonstrated great potential in many vision tasks, its receptive fields are not dense enough to model the complex temporal dynamics in lip-reading scenarios. To address this problem, we introduce dense connections into the network to capture more robust temporal features. Moreover, our approach utilises the Squeeze-and-Excitation block, a light-weight attention mechanism, to further enhance the model's classificat…

A number of recent studies have shown that a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) pretrained on a large dataset can be adopted as a universal image description which leads to astounding performance in many visual classification tasks. Most of these studies, if not all, adopt activations of the fully-connected layer of a DCNN as the image or region representation and it is believed that convolutional layer activations are less discriminative. This paper, however, advocates that if used appropriately convolutional layer activations can be turned into a powerful image representation which enj…
Neonatal brain segmentation in magnetic resonance (MR) is a challenging problem due to poor image quality and low contrast between white and gray matter regions. Most existing approaches for this problem are based on multi-atlas label fusion strategies, which are time-consuming and sensitive to registration errors. As alternative to these methods, we propose a hyper-densely connected 3D convolutional neural network that employs MR-T1 and T2 images as input, which are processed independently in two separated paths. An important difference with previous densely connected networks is the use of d…

This paper investigates the usage of kernel functions at the different layers in a convolutional neural network. We carry out extensive studies of their impact on convolutional, pooling and fully-connected layers. We notice that the linear kernel may not be sufficiently effective to fit the input data distributions, whereas high order kernels prone to over-fitting. This leads to conclude that a trade-off between complexity and performance should be reached. We show how one can effectively leverage kernel functions, by introducing a more distortion aware pooling layers which reduces over-fittin…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) increase depth by stacking convolutional layers, and deeper network models perform better in image recognition. Empirical research shows that simply stacking convolutional layers does not make the network train better, and skip connection (residual learning) can improve network model performance. For the image classification task, models with global densely connected architectures perform well in large datasets like ImageNet, but are not suitable for small datasets such as CIFAR-10 and SVHN. Different from dense connections, we propose two new algorithms to …
Compact neural networks are inclined to exploit "sparsely-connected" convolutions such as depthwise convolution and group convolution for employment in mobile applications. To address this issue, we present two novel operations named merging and evolution to leverage the inter-group information. Our key idea is encoding the inter-group information with a…

Deep neural networks often work well when they are over-parameterized and trained with a massive amount of noise and regularization, such as weight decay and dropout. Although dropout is widely used as a regularization technique for fully connected layers, it is often less effective for convolutional layers. This lack of success of dropout for convolutional layers is perhaps due to the fact that activation units in convolutional layers are spatially correlated so information can still flow through convolutional networks despite dropout. Thus a structured form of dropout is needed to regularize…
