Fully convolutional networks (FCNs) have been recently used for feature extraction and classification in image and speech recognition, where their inputs have been raw signal or other complicated features. Persian signature verification is done using conventional convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this paper, we propose to use FCN for learning a robust feature extraction from the raw signature images. FCN can be considered as a variant of CNN where its fully connected layers are replaced with a global pooling layer. In the proposed manner, FCN inputs are raw signature images and convolution filter size is fixed. Recognition accuracy on UTSig database, shows that FCN with a global average pooling outperforms CNN.
Offline Signature Verification (OSV) remains a challenging pattern recognition task, especially in the presence of skilled forgeries that are not available during the training. This challenge is aggravated when there are small labeled training data available but with large intra-personal variations. In this study, we address this issue by employing an active learning approach, which selects the most informative instances to label and therefore reduces the human labeling effort significantly. Our proposed OSV includes three steps: feature learning, active learning, and final verification. We be…
Offline Signature Verification (OSV) is a challenging pattern recognition task, especially when it is expected to generalize well on the skilled forgeries that are not available during the training. Its challenges also include small training sample and large intra-class variations. Considering the limitations, we suggest a novel transfer learning approach from Persian handwriting domain to multi-language OSV domain. We train two Residual CNNs on the source domain separately based on two different tasks of word classification and writer identification. Since identifying a person signature resem…

The pivotal role of datasets in signature verification systems motivates researchers to collect signature samples. Distinct characteristics of Persian signature demands for richer and culture-dependent offline signature datasets. This paper introduces a new and public Persian offline signature dataset, UTSig, that consists of 8280 images from 115 classes. Each class has 27 genuine signatures, 3 opposite-hand signatures, and 42 skilled forgeries made by 6 forgers. Compared with the other public datasets, UTSig has more samples, more classes, and more forgers. We considered various variables inc…
In this paper, the problem of handwritten digit recognition has been addressed. However, the underlying language is Persian/Arabic, and the system with which this task is a capsule network (CapsNet) has recently emerged as a more advanced architecture than its ancestor, namely CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). The training of the architecture is performed using the Hoda dataset, which has been provided for Persian/Arabic handwritten digits. The output of the system clearly outperforms the results achieved by its ancestors, as well as other previously presented recognition algorithms.

We propose a novel convolutional neural network to verify a~match between two normalized images of the human iris. The network is trained end-to-end and validated on three publicly available datasets yielding state-of-the-art results against four baseline methods. The network performs better by a 10% margin to the state-of-the-art method on the CASIA.v4 dataset. In the network, we use a novel Unit-Circle Layer layer which replaces the Gabor-filtering step in a common iris-verification pipeline. We show that the layer improves the performance of the model up to 15% on previously-unseen data.
Offline signature verification is one of the most challenging tasks in biometrics and document forensics. Unlike other verification problems, it needs to model minute but critical details between genuine and forged signatures, because a skilled falsification might often resembles the real signature with small deformation. This verification task is even harder in writer independent scenarios which is undeniably fiscal for realistic cases. In this paper, we model an offline writer independent signature verification task with a convolutional Siamese network. Siamese networks are twin networks wit…

State-of-the-art person re-identification systems that employ a triplet based deep network suffer from a poor generalization capability. In this paper, we propose a four stream Siamese deep convolutional neural network for person redetection that jointly optimises verification and identification losses over a four image input group. Specifically, the proposed method overcomes the weakness of the typical triplet formulation by using groups of four images featuring two matched (i.e. the same identity) and two mismatched images. This allows us to jointly increase the interclass variations and red…
Over the last five years, methods based on Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have shown impressive performance improvements for object detection and recognition problems. This has been made possible due to the availability of large annotated datasets, a better understanding of the non-linear mapping between input images and class labels as well as the affordability of GPUs. In this paper, we present the design details of a deep learning system for unconstrained face recognition, including modules for face detection, association, alignment and face verification. In this paper, a novel method using 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) architecture has been proposed for speaker verification in the text-independent setting. One of the main challenges is the creation of the speaker models. Most of the previously-reported approaches create speaker models based on averaging the extracted features from utterances of the speaker, which is known as the d-vector system. In our paper, we propose an adaptive feature learning by utilizing the 3D-CNNs for direct speaker model creation in which, for both development and enrollment phases, an identical number of …

Online signature verification (OSV) is one of the most challenging tasks in writer identification and digital forensics. Owing to the large intra-individual variability, there is a critical requirement to accurately learn the intra-personal variations of the signature to achieve higher classification accuracy. To achieve this, in this paper, we propose an OSV framework based on deep convolutional Siamese network (DCSN). DCSN automatically extracts robust feature descriptions based on metric-based loss function which decreases intra-writer variability (Genuine-Genuine) and increases inter-indiv…

In this paper we propose the two-stage approach of organizing information in video surveillance systems. At first, the faces are detected in each frame and a video stream is split into sequences of frames with face region of one person. Secondly, these sequences (tracks) that contain identical faces are grouped using face verification algorithms and hierarchical agglomerative clustering. Gender and age are estimated for each cluster (person) in order to facilitate the usage of the organized video collection. The particular attention is focused on the aggregation of features extracted from each…
We propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN) which performs coarse and fine segmentation for end-to-end synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR) system. In recent years, many CNNs for SAR ATR using deep learning have been proposed, but most of them classify target classes from fixed size target chips extracted from SAR imagery. On the other hand, we proposed the CNN which outputs the score of the multiple target classes and a background class for each pixel from the SAR imagery of arbitrary size and multiple targets as fine segmentation. In this paper, we present an algorithm for unconstrained face verification based on deep convolutional features and evaluate it on the newly released IARPA Janus Benchmark A (IJB-A) dataset. The IJB-A dataset includes real-world unconstrained faces from 500 subjects with full pose and illumination variations which are much harder than the traditional Labeled Face in the Wild (LFW) and Youtube Face (YTF) datasets. The deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is trained using the CASIA-WebFace dataset. Extensive experiments on the IJB-A dataset are provided.

Verifying the identity of a person using handwritten signatures is challenging in the presence of skilled forgeries, where a forger has access to a person's signature and deliberately attempt to imitate it. In offline (static) signature verification, the dynamic information of the signature writing process is lost, and it is difficult to design good feature extractors that can distinguish genuine signatures and skilled forgeries. This reflects in a relatively poor performance, with verification errors around 7% in the best systems in the literature. To address both the difficulty of obtaining …

Convolutional neural networks have gained vast popularity due to their excellent performance in the fields of computer vision, image processing, and others. Unfortunately, it is now well known that convolutional networks often produce erroneous results - for example, minor perturbations of the inputs of these networks can result in severe classification errors. Numerous verification approaches have been proposed in recent years to prove the absence of such errors, but these are typically geared for fully connected networks and suffer from exacerbated scalability issues when applied to convolut…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have redefined the state-of-the-art in many real-world applications, such as facial recognition, image classification, human pose estimation, and semantic segmentation. Despite their success, CNNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, where slight changes to their inputs may lead to sharp changes in their output in even well-trained networks. Set-based analysis methods can detect or prove the absence of bounded adversarial attacks, which can then be used to evaluate the effectiveness of neural network training methodology. Unfortunately, existing verificati…

The softmax loss function does not optimize the features to have higher similarity score for positive pairs and lower similarity score for negative pairs, which leads to a performance gap. Thus, in this paper, we focus on designing convolutional layer with good rotation invariance. Specifically, based on a simple rotation-invariant coordinate system, we propose a new convolutional operation, called Rotation-Invariant Coordinate Convol…
