We consider classical solutions of the inviscid Surface Quasi-geostrophic equation that are a small perturbation $ε$ from a radial stationary solution $θ=|x|$. We use a modified energy method to prove the existence time of classical solutions from $\frac{1}ε$ to a time scale of $\frac{1}{ε^4}$. Moreover, by perturbing in a suitable direction we construct global smooth solutions, via bifurcation, that rotate uniformly in time and space.
In this article, the authors prove the existence of global weak solutions to the inviscid three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation. This equation models the evolution of the temperature on the surface of the earth. It is widely used in geophysics and meteorology.
In a recent article by Gravejat and Smets, it is built smooth solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation that have the form of a traveling wave. In this article we work back on their construction to provide solution to a more general class of quasi-geostrophic equation where the half-laplacian is replaced by any fractional laplacian.
We construct families of smooth travelling-wave solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG). These solutions can be viewed as the equivalents for this equation of the vortex anti-vortex pairs in the context of the incompressible Euler equation. Our argument relies on the stream function formulation and eventually amounts to solving a fractional nonlinear elliptic equation by variational methods.
The purpose of this note is to study the weak solutions to the inviscid quasi-geostrophic system for initial data belonging to Lebesgue spaces. We give a global existence result as well as detail the connections between several different notions of weak solutions. In addition, we give a condition under which the energy of the system is conserved.
We present a formal derivation of the inviscid 3D quasi-geostrophic system (QG) from primitive equations on a bounded, cylindrical domain. A key point in the derivation is the treatment of the lateral boundary and the resulting boundary conditions it imposes on solutions. To our knowledge, these boundary conditions are new and differentiate our model from closely related models which have been the object of recent study. These boundary conditions are natural for a variational problem in a particular Hilbert space. We construct solutions and prove an elliptic regularity theorem corresponding to…
We provide a variational construction of special solutions to the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations. These solutions take the form of N vortex patches with N-fold symmetry , which are steady in a uniformly rotating frame. Moreover, we investigate their asymptotic properties when the size of the corresponding patches vanishes. In this limit, we prove these solutions to be a desingularization of N Dirac masses with the same intensity, located on the N vertices of a regular polygon rotating at a constant angular velocity.
Inspired by recent developments in Berdina-like models for turbulence, we propose an inviscid regularization for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations. We are particularly interested in the celebrated question of blowup in finite time of the solution gradient of the SQG equations. The new regularization yields a necessary and sufficient condition, satisfied by the regularized solution, when a regularization parameter $α$ tends to zero, for the solution of the original SQG equations to develop a singularity in finite time. As opposed to the commonly used viscous regularization, the invi…
The inviscid multi-layer quasi-geostrophic equations are considered over an arbitrary bounded domain. The no-flux but non-homogeneous boundary conditions are imposed to accommodate the free fluctuations of the top and layer interfaces. Using the barotropic and baroclinic modes in the vertical direction, the elliptic system governing the streamfunctions and the potential vorticity is decomposed into a sequence of scalar elliptic boundary value problems, where the regularity theories from the two-dimensional case can be applied. With the initial potential vorticity being essentially bounded, the…
We give a rigorous proof of the validity of the point vortex description for a class of inviscid generalized surface quasi-geostrophic models on the whole plane.
Any classical solution of the 2D incompressible Euler equation is global in time. However, it remains an outstanding open problem whether classical solutions of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation preserve their regularity for all time. This paper studies solutions of a family of active scalar equations in which each component $u_j$ of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the scalar $θ$ through $u_j =\mathcal{R} Λ^{-1} P(Λ) θ$ where $\mathcal{R}$ is a Riesz transform and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$. The 2D Euler vorticity equation corresponds to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the SQG equation …
We revisit a model for three-dimensional, inviscid quasi-geostrophic flow on bounded, cylindrical domains introduced by the authors in \cite{nv18}. We prove the local-in-time existence of classical solutions.
We study the existence of doubly connected rotating patches for the inviscid surface quasi- geostrophic equation left open in \cite{HHH}. By using the approach proposed by \cite{CCGS} we also prove that close to the annulus the boundaries are actually analytic curves.
We consider the family known as modified or generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations (mSQG) consisting of the classical inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation together with a family of regularized active scalars given by introducing a smoothing operator of nonzero but possibly arbitrarily small degree. This family naturally interpolates between the 2D Euler equation and the SQG equation. For this family of equations we construct an invariant measure on a rough $L^2$-based Sobolev space and establish the existence of solutions of arbitrarily large lifespan for initial data in …
We give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution to the inviscid Boussinesq system. In dimension two, we point out that it tends to infinity when the initial (relative) temperature tends to zero. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the inviscid Boussinesq system. In passing, we provide continuation criteria (of independent interest) in the $N$-dimensional case. In the second part of the paper, our method is adapted to handle the axisymmetric incompressible Euler equations with swirl.
The inviscid barotropic quasi-geostrophic equation with a free surface is considered. The free surface mandates a non-standard boundary condition. The global existence existence and uniqueness of a weak solution is established, thanks to the uniform in time bounds on the potential vorticity. The solution is also shown to satisfy the initial and boundary conditions in the classical sense.
We prove the existence of the V-states for the generalized inviscid SQG equations with $α\in ]0,1[.$ These structures are special rotating simply connected patches with $m-$ fold symmetry bifurcating from the trivial solution at some explicit values of the angular velocity. This produces, inter alia, an infinite family of non stationary global solutions with uniqueness.

In this paper, the authors show the existence of global in time classical solutions to the 3D quasi-geostrophic system with Ekman pumping for any smooth initial value (possibly large). This system couples an inviscid transport equation in $\mathbb{R}^3_+$ with an equation on the boundary satisfied by the trace. The proof combines the De Giorgi regularization effect on the boundary $z=0$ -similar to the so called surface quasi-geostrophic equation- with Beale-Kato-Majda techniques to propagate regularity for $z>0$. A potential theory argument is used to strengthen the regularization effect on t…
This article generalizes a previous work in which the author obtained a large lower bound for the lifespan of the solutions to the Primitive Equations, and proved convergence to the 3D quasi-geostrophic system for general and ill-prepared (possibly blowing-up) initial data that are regularization of vortex patches related to the potential velocity. These results were obtained for a very particular case when the kinematic viscosity $ν$ is equal to the heat diffusivity $ν'$, turning the diffusion operator into the classical Laplacian. Obtaining the same results without this assumption is much mo…
We consider an initial value problem for a quadratically nonlinear inviscid Burgers-Hilbert equation that models the motion of vorticity discontinuities. We use a normal form transformation, which is implemented by means of a near-identity coordinate change of the independent spatial variable, to prove the existence of small, smooth solutions over cubically nonlinear time-scales. For vorticity discontinuities, this result means that there is a cubically nonlinear time-scale before the onset of filamentation.
The present article is devoted to the 3D dissipative quasi-geostrophic system (QG). This system can be obtained as limit model of the Primitive Equations in the asymptotics of strong rotation and stratification, and involves a non-radial, non-local, homogeneous pseudo-differential operator of order 2 denoted by $Γ$ (and whose semigroup kernel reaches negative values). After a refined study of the non-local part of $Γ$, we prove apriori estimates (in the general L^p setting) for the 3D QG-model. The main difficulty of this article is to study the commutator of $Γ$ with a Lagrangian change of va…
We continue our study of the dynamics of a nearly inviscid periodic surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Here we consider a slightly diffusive stochastic SQG equation of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} dθ_t + |D|^{2δ}θ_t\,dx + (u_t \cdot \nabla)θ_t\,dx + |D|^δdW_t = 0 \\ u_t = \nabla^\perp|D|^{-1}θ_t. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct global energy solutions as introduced by P. Goncalves and M. Jara (2014) for any $δ> 0$, so that any small amount of diffusion permits us to construct solutions. We show moreover that pathwise uniqueness of these energy solutions holds in the prese…
Geophysicists have studied 3D Quasi-Geostrophic systems extensively. These systems describe stratified flows in the atmosphere on a large time scale and are widely used for forecasting atmospheric circulation. They couple an inviscid transport equation in $\mathbb{R}_{+}\timesΩ$ with an equation on the boundary satisfied by the trace, where $Ω$ is either $2D$ torus or a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper, we show the existence of global in time weak solutions to a family of singular 3D quasi-geostrophic systems with Ekman pumping, where the background density profile degene…
We discuss general incompressible inviscid models, including the Euler equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, incompressible porous medium equation, and Boussinesq equations. All these models have classical unique solutions, at least for short time. We show that they have real analytic Lagrangian paths. More precisely, we show that as long as a solution of any of these equations is in a class of regularity that assures Hölder continuous gradients of velocity, the corresponding Lagrangian paths are real analytic functions of time. The method of proof is conceptually straightforward …
For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travell…
This paper aims to study time periodic solutions for 3D inviscid quasi-geostrophic model. We show the existence of non trivial rotating patches by suitable perturbation of stationary solutions given by generic revolution shapes around the vertical axis. The construction of those special solutions are done through bifurcation theory. In general, the spectral problem is very delicate and strongly depends on the shape of the initial stationary solutions. More specifically, the spectral study can be related to an eigenvalue problem of a self-adjoint compact operator. We are able to implement the b…
Inviscid and fast rotation limit for dispersive generalized SQG equations
Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur(印度理工学院乔德普尔分校);Malviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur(马拉维亚国家技术学院斋浦尔);National Institute of Technology Warangal(瓦朗加尔国家技术学院)
In the present paper, we study the fast rotation and inviscid limits for the 2-D dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation with a dispersive forcing term $A \mathcal{R}_{1} \vartheta$, in the domain $Ω=\mathbb{T}^{1} \times \mathbb{R}$. In the case when we perform the fast rotation limit (keeping the viscosity fixed), in the context of general ill-prepared initial data, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by a linear equation. On the other hand, performing the combined fast rotation and inviscid limits, we show that the initial data $\overline{\vartheta}_{0}$ is transported alon…
In this paper, we give a rigorous justification of the point vortex approximation to the family of modified surface quasi-geostrophic (mSQG) equations globally in time in both the inviscid and vanishing dissipative cases. This result completes the justification for the remaining range of the mSQG family unaddressed by Geldhauser and Romito in the article arXiv:1812.05166, in the case of identically signed vortices.
We consider a system describing the motion of an isentropic, inviscid, weakly com-pressible, fast rotating fluid in the whole space R^3 , with initial data belonging to H^s(R^3) , s \textgreater{} 5/2. We prove that the system admits a unique local strong solution in L^$\infty$([0, T ]; H^s(R^3)) , where T is independent of the Rossby and Mach numbers. Moreover, using Strichartz-type estimates, we prove that the solution is almost global, i.e. its lifespan is of the order of $ε$^(--$α$) , $α$ \textgreater{} 0, without any smallness assumption on the initial data (the initial data can even go t…
In this paper we address the existence of time periodic solutions for the generalized inviscid SQG equation in the unit disc with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition when $α\in (0,1)$. We show the existence of a countable family of bifurcating curves from the radial patches. In contrast with the preceding studies in active scalar equations, the Green function is no longer explicit and we circumvent this issue by a suitable splitting into a singular explicit part (which coincides with the planar one) and a smooth implicit one induced by the boundary of the domain. Another problem is connec…
We show that solutions to a large class of inviscid equations, in Eulerian variables, extend as holomorphic functions of time, with values in a Gevrey class (thus space-analytic), and are solutions of complexified versions of the said equations. The class of equations we consider includes those of fluid dynamics such as the Euler, surface quasi-geostrophic, Boussinesq and magnetohydrodynamic equations, as well as other equations with analytic nonlinearities. The initial data are assumed to belong to a $\mathit{Gevrey\:class}$, i.e., analytic in the space variable. Our technique follows that of…
Instantaneous gap loss of Sobolev regularity for the surface quasi-geostrophic equation
Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics(应用物理与计算数学研究所);School of Mathematics and Physics, University of Science and Technology Beijing(北京科技大学数理学院)
In this paper, we are concerned with the Cauchy problem of the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation in which the velocity field is expressed as $u=K\astω$, where $ω=ω(x,t)$ is an unknown function and $K(x)=\frac{x^\perp}{|x|^{2+2α}}, 0\leα\le \frac12.$ When $α=0$, it is the two-dimensional Euler equations. When $α=\frac 12$, it corresponds to the inviscid SQG. We will prove that if the existence interval of the smooth solution to the generalized SQG for some $0<α_0\le\frac12$ is $[0,T]$, then under the same initial data, the existence interval of the generalized SQG with $α$ wh…
The present paper is devoted to the well-posedness issue for a low-Mach number limit system with heat conduction but no viscosity. We will work in the framework of general Besov spaces $B^s_{p,r}(\R^d)$, $d\geq 2$, which can be embedded into the class of Lipschitz functions. Firstly, we consider the case of $p\in[2,4]$, with no further restrictions on the initial data. Then we tackle the case of any $p\in\,]1,\infty]$, but requiring also a finite energy assumption. The extreme value $p=\infty$ can be treated due to a new a priori estimate for parabolic equations. At last we also briefly consid…
We show a global existence result of weak solutions for a class of generalized Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation in the inviscid case. We also prove the global regularity of such solutions for the equation with slightly supercritical dissipation, which turns out to correspond to a logarithmically supercritical diffusion due to the singular nature of the velocity. Our last result is the eventual regularity in the supercritical cases for such weak solutions. The main idea in the proof of the existence part is based on suitable commutator estimates along with a careful cutting into low/high freq…
We consider possible generation of singularities of a vector field transported by diffeomorphisms with derivatives of uniformly bounded determinants. A particular case of volume preserving diffeomrphism is the most important, since it has direct applications to the incompressible, inviscid hydrodynamics. We find relations between the directions of the vector field and the eigenvectors of the derivative of the back-to-label map near the singularity. We also find an invariant when we follow the motion of the integral curves of the vector field. For the 3D Euler equations these results have immed…
In [25], Moffatt introduced the concept of helicity in an inviscid fluid and examined the helicity preservation of smooth solution to barotropic compressible flow. In this paper, it is shown that the weak solutions of the above system in Onsager type spaces $\dot{B}^{1/3}_{p,c(\mathbb{N})}$ guarantee the conservation of the helicity. The parallel results of homogeneous incompressible Euler equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic equation are also obtained.
In this paper we consider the inviscid limit for the periodic solutions to Navier-Stokes equation in the framework of Gevrey class. It is shown that the lifespan for the solutions to Navier-Stokes equation is independent of viscosity, and that the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation converge to that of Euler equation in Gevrey class as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover the convergence rate in Gevrey class is presented.
This paper studies a family of generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations for an active scalar $θ$ on the whole plane whose velocities have been mildly regularized, for instance, logarithmically. The well-posedness of these regularized models in borderline Sobolev regularity have previously been studied by D. Chae and J. Wu when the velocity $u$ is of lower singularity, i.e., $u=-\nabla^{\perp}Λ^{β-2}p(Λ)θ$, where $p$ is a logarithmic smoothing operator and $β\in [0,1]$. We complete this study by considering the more singular regime $β\in(1,2)$. The main tool is the identification o…
We prove global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions for two dimensional inviscid Rotating Shallow Water system with small initial data subject to the zero-relative-vorticity constraint. One of the key steps is a reformulation of the problem into a symmetric quasilinear Klein-Gordon system, for which the global existence of classical solutions is then proved with combination of the vector field approach and the normal forms. We also probe the case of general initial data and reveal a lower bound for the lifespan that is almost inversely proportional to the size of the initi…
The framework of invariant parameterization is extended to higher-order closure schemes. We also define, for the first time, generalized invariant parameterization schemes, where symmetries of the corresponding original model are preserved as equivalence transformations of related classes of closed system of differential equations. As a particular problem, we consider invariant parameterization schemes for geostrophic eddies in a barotropic ocean. Here the initial model is the barotropic vorticity equation, which is equivalent to the system of incompressible inviscid two-dimensional Euler equa…
