Riemann problems at geometric discontinuities are a classic and fascinating issue of hydraulics. In the present paper, the complete solution to the Riemann problem of the one-dimensional Shallow water Equations at monotonic width discontinuities is presented. This solution is based on the assumption that the relationship between the states immediately to the left and to the right of the discontinuity is a stationary weak solution of the one-dimensional variable-width Shallow water Equations. It is demonstrated that the solution to the Riemann problem always exists and it is unique, but there are cases where three solutions are possible. The appearance of multiple solutions is connected to a phenomenon, known as hydraulic hysteresis, observed for supercritical flow in contracting channel. The analysis of a Finite Volume numerical scheme from the literature (Cozzolino et al. 2018b) shows that the algorithm captures the solution with supercritical flow through the width discontinuity when multiple solutions are possible. Interestingly, the one-dimensional variable-width Shallow water Equations are formally identical to the one-dimensional Porous Shallow water Equations, implying that the exact solutions and the numerical scheme discussed in the present paper are relevant for two-dimensional Porous Shallow water numerical models aiming at urban flooding simulations. The exact solution presented here may be used not only as a benchmark, but also as a guide for the construction of new algorithms, and it can be even embedded in an exact solver.

Magnetohydrodynamically induced interface instability in liquid metal batteries is analyzed. The batteries are represented by a simplified system in the form of a rectangular cell, in which strong vertical electric current flows through three horizontal layers: the layer of a heavy metal at the bottom, the layer of a light metal at the top, and the layer of electrolyte in the middle. A new two-dimensional nonlinear model based on the conservative shallow water approximation is derived and utilized in a numerical study. It is found that in the case of small density difference between the electr…
Within the framework of shallow-water magnetohydrodynamics, we investigate the linear instability of horizontal shear flows, influenced by an aligned magnetic field and stratification. Various classical instability results, such as Høiland's growth rate bound and Howard's semi-circle theorem, are extended to this shallow-water system for quite general profiles. Two specific piecewise-constant velocity profiles, the vortex sheet and the rectangular jet, are studied analytically and asymptotically; it is found that the magnetic field and stratification (as measured by the Froude number) are gene…
Experiments have shown that flow in compliant microchannels can become unstable at a much lower Reynolds number than the corresponding flow in a rigid conduit. Therefore, it has been suggested that the wall's elastic compliance can be exploited towards new modalities of microscale mixing. While previous studies mainly focused on the local instability induced by the fluid--structure interactions (FSIs) in the system, we derive a one-dimensional (1D) model to study the FSI's effect on the global instability. The proposed 1D FSI model is tailored to long, shallow rectangular microchannels with a …
The shallow water equations (SWE) model a variety of geophysical flows. Flows in channels with rectangular cross sections may be modelled with a simplified one-dimensional SWE with varying width. Among other model parameters, information about the bathymetry and friction coefficient is needed for the correct and precise prediction of the flow. Although synthetic values of the model parameters may suffice for testing numerical schemes, approximations of the bathymetry and other parameters may be required for applications. Estimations may be obtained by experimental methods but some of those tec…
Two-dimensional nonlinear gravity waves travelling in shallow water on a vertically sheared current of constant vorticity are considered. Using Euler equations, in the shallow water approximation, hyperbolic equations for the surface elevation and the horizontal velocity are derived. Using Riemann invariants of these equations, that are obtained analytically, a closed-form nonlinear evolution equation for the surface elevation is derived. A dispersive term is added to this equation using the exact linear dispersion relation. With this new single first-order partial differential equation, vorti…
We investigate the numerical artifact known as a carbuncle, in the solution of the shallow water equations. We propose a new Riemann solver that is based on a local measure of the entropy residual and aims to avoid carbuncles while maintaining high accuracy. We propose a new challenging test problem for shallow water codes, consisting of a steady circular hydraulic jump that can be physically unstable. We show that numerical methods are prone to either suppress the instability completely or form carbuncles. We test existing cures for the carbuncle. In our experiments, only the proposed method …
Stability of inviscid shear shallow water flows with free surface is studied in the framework of the Benney equations. This is done by investigating the generalized hyperbolicity of the integrodifferential Benney system of equations. It is shown that all shear flows having monotonic convex velocity profiles are stable. The hydrodynamic approximations of the model corresponding to the classes of flows with piecewise linear continuous and discontinuous velocity profiles are derived and studied. It is shown that these approximations possess Hamiltonian structure and a complete system of Riemann i…
The classic Stoker dam-break problem is revisited in cases of different channel widths upstream and downstream of the dam. The channel is supposed to have a rectangular cross section and a horizontal and frictionless bottom. The system of the shallow water equations is enriched, using the width as a space-dependent variable, together with the depth and the unit discharge, which conversely depend on both space and time. Such a formulation allows a quasi-analytical treatment of the system, whose solution is similar to that of the classic Stoker solution when the downstream/upstream depth ratio i…
Laminar flow in devices fabricated from soft materials causes deformation of the passage geometry, which affects the flow rate--pressure drop relation. For a given pressure drop, in channels with narrow rectangular cross-section, the flow rate varies as the cube of the channel height, so deformation can produce significant quantitative effects, including nonlinear dependence on the pressure drop [{Gervais, T., El-Ali, J., Günther, A. \& Jensen, K.\ F.}\ 2006 Flow-induced deformation of shallow microfluidic channels.\ \textit{Lab Chip} \textbf{6}, 500--507]. Gervais et. al. proposed a successfu…
We present a central differencing scheme for the solution of the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography and moving wet-dry fronts. The problem is numerically challenging due to two reasons. First, the non-flat bottom topography requires accurate balancing of the source term of the momentum conservation equation accounting for the gravitational force and the flux gradient term accounting for the force due to pressure imbalance. Second, the modelling of moving wet-dry fronts involves handling of diminishing water height, which is numerically challenging to handle. The Riemann-so…
In 1965, B. A. Troesch solved the isoperimetric sloshing problem of determining the container shape that maximizes the fundamental sloshing frequency among two classes of shallow containers: symmetric canals with a given free surface width and cross-sectional area, and radially symmetric containers with a given rim radius and volume [doi:10.1002/cpa.3160180124]. Here, we extend these results in two ways: (i) we consider surface tension effects on the fluid free surface, assuming a flat equilibrium free surface together with a pinned contact line, and (ii) we consider sinusoidal waves traveling…
The classical system of shallow-water (Saint--Venant) equations describes long surface waves in an inviscid incompressible fluid of a variable depth. Although shock waves are expected in this quasilinear hyperbolic system for a wide class of initial data, we find a sufficient condition on the initial data that guarantees existence of a global classical solution continued from a local solution. The sufficient conditions can be easily satisfied for the fluid flow propagating in one direction with two characteristic velocities of the same sign and two monotonically increasing Riemann invariants. …
In paper [S.I. Senashov, A. Yakhno. 2012. SIGMA. Vol.8. 071] the variant of the hodograph method based on the conservation laws for two hyperbolic quasilinear equations of the first order is described. Using these results we propose a method which allows to reduce the Cauchy problem for the two quasilinear PDE's to the Cauchy problem for ODE's. The proposed method is actually some similar method of characteristics for a system of two hyperbolic quasilinear equations. The method can be used effectively in all cases, when the linear hyperbolic equation in partial derivatives of the second order …
We present an advection-pressure flux-vector splitting method for the one and two- dimensional shallow water equations following the approach first proposed by Toro and Vázquez for the compressible Euler equations. The resulting first-order schemes turn out to be exceedingly simple, with accuracy and robustness comparable to that of the sophisticated Godunov upwind method used in conjunction with complete non- linear Riemann solvers. The technique splits the full system into two subsystems, namely an advection system and a pressure system. The sought numerical flux results from fluxes for each…
We present a computational framework to address the flow of two immiscible viscous liquids which co-flow into a shallow rectangular container at one side, and flow out into a holding container at the opposite side. Assumptions based on the shallow depth of the domain are used to reduce the governing equations to one of Hele-Shaw type. The distinctive feature of the numerical method is the accurate modeling of the capillary effects. A continuum approach coupled with a volume-of-fluid formulation for computing the interface motion and for modeling the interfacial tension in Hele-Shaw flows is fo…
A rapid predictive tool based on the linearised Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations is proposed in this work to investigate secondary currents generated by streamwise-independent surface topography modulations in turbulent channel flow. The tool is derived by coupling the Reynolds-averaged momentum equation to the Spalart-Allmaras transport equation for the turbulent eddy viscosity, using a nonlinear constitutive relation for the Reynolds stresses to capture correctly secondary motions. Linearised equations, describing the steady flow response to arbitrary surface modulations, are derive…
An exact solution to the lock-exchange problem, which is a two-layer analogue of the classical dam-break problem, is obtained in the shallow-water (SW) approximation for two immiscible fluids with slightly different densities. The problem is solved by the method of characteristics using analytic expressions for the Riemann invariants. The obtained solution, which represents an inviscid approximation to the high-Reynolds-number limit, is in general discontinuous containing up to three hydraulic jumps which are due to either multivaluedness or instability of the continuous SW solution. Hydraulic…

We study the flow of water waves over bathymetry that varies periodically along one direction. We derive a linearized, homogenized model and show that the periodic bathymetry induces an effective dispersion, distinct from the dispersion inherently present in water waves. We relate this dispersion to the well-known effective dispersion introduced by changes in the bathymetry in non-rectangular channels. Numerical simulations using the (non-dispersive) shallow water equations reveal that a balance between this effective dispersion and nonlinearity can create solitary waves. We derive a KdV-type …
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of small-amplitude gravity water waves in a rectangular domain where the water depth is much smaller than the horizontal scale. The control acts on one lateral boundary, by imposing the horizontal acceleration of the water along that boundary, as a scalar input function u. The state z of the system consists of two functions: the water level $ζ$ along the top boundary, and its time derivative $\partial$$ζ$ $\partial$t. We prove that the solution of the water waves system converges to the solution of the one dimensional wave equation with Neumann boundary con…
In this manuscript we perform an extensive numerical study of the long wave interaction problem with a fixed partially immersed body into a fluid layer. The incident wave is assumed to be an isolated solitary wave. The body in this study is assumed to be fixed with a rectangular section which is not touching the bottom of the channel. The mathematical modelling of this problem is based on Part I (Khakimzyanov and Dutykh 2020) of this series and considered models include the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations (NSWE), fully nonlinear weakly dispersive Serre-Green-Naghdi Equations (SGN equations) …
