In a previous paper, we proved that a quasi-isometric map $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ between two pinched Hadamard manifolds $X$ and $Y$ is within bounded distance from a unique harmonic map. We extend this result to maps $f:Γ\backslash X\longrightarrow Y$, where $Γ$ is a convex cocompact discrete group of isometries of $X$ and $f$ is locally quasi-isometric at infinity.
We prove that a quasi-isometric map, and more generally a coarse embedding, between pinched Hadamard manifolds is within bounded distance from a unique harmonic map.
We use the combinatorial harmonic map theory to study the isometric actions of discrete groups on Hadamard spaces. Given a finitely generated group acting by automorphisms, properly discontinuously and cofinitely on a simplicial complex and its isometric action on a Hadamard space, we formulate criterions for the action to have a global fixed point.
If $(N^{m+p},h)$ is a Cartan-Hadamard manifold such that $Ric(h)\geq -G(r_{N}(x))$ where $G(0)\geq 1, G^{'}\geq 0$ and $G^{-1/2}\not\in L^{1}(+\infty)$ then every proper biharmonic isometric immersion $ϕ: M^{m}\rightarrow(N^{m+p},h)$ is a harmonic map.
Various results based on some convexity assumptions (involving the exponential map along with affine maps, geodesics and convex hulls) have been recently established on Hadamard manifolds. In this paper we prove that these conditions are mutually equivalent and they hold if and only if the Hadamard manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. In this way, we show that some results in the literature obtained on Hadamard manifolds are actually nothing but their well known Euclidean counterparts.
By using a Borel density theorem for algebraic quotients, we prove a theorem concerning isometric actions of a Lie group $G$ on a smooth or analytic manifold $M$ with a rigid $\mathrm{A}$-structure $σ$. It generalizes Gromov's centralizer and representation theorems to the case where $R(G)$ is split solvable and $G/R(G)$ has no compact factors, strengthens a special case of Gromov's open dense orbit theorem, and implies that for smooth $M$ and simple $G$, if Gromov's representation theorem does not hold, then the local Killing fields on $\widetilde{M}$ are highly non-extendable. As application…
We classify representations of compact connected Lie groups whose induced action on the unit sphere has an orbit space isometric to a Riemannian orbifold.
Cartan-Hadamard manifold is a simply connected Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. In this article, we have proved that a Cartan-Hadamard manifold satisfying steady gradient Ricci soliton with the integral condition of potential function is isometric to the Euclidean space. Next we have proved a compactness theorem for gradient shrinking Ricci soliton satisfying some scalar curvature condition. Finally, we have showed that a gradient expanding Ricci soliton with linear volume growth and positive potential function is an Einstein manifold.
We show that for every quasi-isometric map from a Hadamard manifold of pinched negative curvature to a locally compact, Gromov hyperbolic, ${\rm CAT}(0)$-space there exists an energy minimizing harmonic map at finite distance. This harmonic map is moreover Lipschitz. This generalizes a recent result of Benoist-Hulin.
We characterize the universal covering of connected analytic pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which admit a non-trivial and isometric action of the simple Lie group $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ with a dense orbit preserving a finite volume. If such manifold is also weakly irreducible we prove that $M$ is isometric to, or a quotient space of, a simple Lie group containing $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$.
<ENGLISH> Consider a closed, smooth manifold M of nonpositive sectional curvature. Write p:UM-> M for the unit tangent bundle over M and let R_> denote the subset consisting of all vectors of higher rank. This subset is closed and invariant under the geodesic flow on UM. We will define the structured dimension sdim(R_>) which, essentially, is the dimension of the set p(R_>) of base points of R_>. The main result holds for manifolds with sdim(R_>) < dim(M)/2: For every E>0 there is an E-dense, flow invariant, closed subset Z_E in UM R_> such that p(Z_E)=M. For every point in M this means that t…
We study locally conformally Berwald metrics on closed manifolds which are not globally conformally Berwald. We prove that the characterization of such metrics is equivalent to characterizing incomplete, simply-connected, Riemannian manifolds with reducible holonomy group whose quotient by a group of homotheties is closed. We further prove a de Rham type splitting theorem which states that if such a manifold is analytic, it is isometric to the Riemannian product of a Euclidean space and an incomplete manifold.
Let $M$ be a compact nonnegatively curved Riemannian manifold admitting an isometric action by a compact Lie group $\mathsf G$ in a way that the quotient space $M/\mathsf G$ has nonempty boundary. Let $π: M \to M/\mathsf G$ denote the quotient map and $B$ be any boundary stratum of $M/\mathsf G$. Via a specific soul construction for $M/ \mathsf G$ we construct a smooth closed submanifold $N$ of $M$ such that $M \setminus π^{-1}(B)$ is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of $N$. As an application we show that a simply connected torus manifold admitting an invariant metric of nonnegative curvatur…
Let $G$ be a non-compact simple Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Denote with $m(\mathfrak{g})$ the dimension of the smallest non-trivial $\mathfrak{g}$-module with an invariant non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form. For an irreducible finite volume pseudo-Riemannian analytic manifold $M$ it is observed that $\dim(M) \geq \dim(G) + m(\mathfrak{g})$ when $M$ admits an isometric $G$-action with a dense orbit. The Main Theorem considers the case $G = \widetilde{\mathrm{SO}}_0(p,q)$ providing an explicit description of $M$ when the bound is achieved. In such case, $M$ is (up to a finite …
The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal fun…
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
We prove that some symetric semi-riemannian manifolds do not admit a proper domain which is divisible by the action of a discrete group of isometries. In other words, if a closed semi-riemannian manifold is locally isometric to such a model, and if its developing map is injective, then the manifold is actually geodesically complete, and therefore isometric to a quotient of the whole model space. Those results extend, under additional hypothesis (the injectivity of the developing map), the theorems of Carriere and Klingler stating that closed lorentz manifolds of constant curvature are geodesic…
We prove that for any isometric action of a group on a unit sphere of dimension larger than one, the quotient space has diameter zero or larger than a universal dimension-independent positive constant.
In a Riemannian manifold a regular convex domain is said to be $λ$-convex if its normal curvature at each point is greater than or equal to $λ$. In a Hadamard manifold, the asymptotic behaviour of the quotient $\vol(Ω(t))/\vol(\partialΩ(t))$ for a family of $λ$-convex domains $Ω(t)$ expanding over the whole space has been studied and general bounds for this quotient are known. In this paper we improve this general result in the complex hyperbolic space $\CH$, a Hadamard manifold with constant holomorphic curvature equal to $-4k^2$. Furthermore, we give some specific properties of convex domain…
Let $V^n$ be an open manifold of non-negative sectional curvature with a soul $Σ$ of co-dimension two. The universal cover $\tilde N$ of the unit normal bundle $N$ of the soul in such a manifold is isometric to the direct product $M^{n-2}\times R$. In the study of the metric structure of $V^n$ an important role plays the vector field $X$ which belongs to the projection of the vertical planes distribution of the Riemannian submersion $π:V\toΣ$ on the factor $M$ in this metric splitting $\tilde N=M\times R$. The case $n=4$ was considered in [GT] where the authors prove that $X$ is a Killing vect…
We classify those manifolds mentioned in the title which have finite topological type. Namely we show any such connected M is isomorphic to a hyperkaehler quotient of a flat quaternionic vector space by an abelian group. We also show that a compact connected and simply connected 3-Sasakian manifold of dimension 4n-1 whose isometry group has rank n+1 is isometric to a 3-Sasakian quotient of a sphere by a torus. As a corollary, a compact connected quaternion-Kaehler 4n-manifold with positive scalar curvature and isometry group of rank n+1 is isometric to the quaternionic projective space or the …
We study discrete, cocompact, isometric actions of groups on Hadamard spaces, and the induced actions on ideal boundaries. For a class of groups generalizing fundamental groups of three-dimensional graph manifolds, we find a set of invariants for the action which determine the boundary action up to equivariant homeomorphism. This work was inspired by (and answers) a question of Gromov from "Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups."
We give some rigidity theorems for an n$(\geq4)$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with harmonic Weyl curvature, positive scalar curvature and positive constant $σ_2$. Moreover, when $n=4,$ we prove that a 4-dimensional compact locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold with positive scalar curvature and positive constant $σ_2$ is isometric to a quotient of the round $\mathbb{S}^4$.
We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold.…
Denote by $\widetilde{\mathrm{U}}(p,q)$ the universal covering group of $\mathrm{U}(p,q)$, the linear group of isometries of the pseudo-Hermitian space $\mathbb{C}^{p,q}$ of signature $p,q$. Let $M$ be a connected analytic complete pseudo-Riemannian manifold that admits an isometric $\widetilde{\mathrm{U}}(p,q)$-action and that satisfies $\dim M \leq n(n+2)$ where $n = p+q$. We prove that if the action of $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(p,q)$ (the connected derived group of $\widetilde{\mathrm{U}}(p,q)$) has a dense orbit and the center of $\widetilde{\mathrm{U}}(p,q)$ acts non-trivially, then $M$ is…

Take two isomorphic convex co-compact co-infinite volume Kleinian groups, whose regular sets are diffeomorphic. The quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by these groups gives two hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose scattering operators may be compared. We prove that the operator norm of the difference between the scattering operators is small, then the groups are related by a coorespondingly small quasi-conformal deformation. This in turn implies that the two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are quasi-isometric.
For a pinched Hadamard manifold $X$ and a discrete group of isometries $Γ$ of $X$, the critical exponent $δ_Γ$ is the exponential growth rate of the orbit of a point in $X$ under the action of $Γ$. We show that the critical exponent for any family $\mathcal{N}$ of normal subgroups of $Γ_0$ has the same coarse behaviour as the Kazhdan distances for the right regular representations of the quotients $Γ_0/Γ$. The key tool is to analyse the spectrum of transfer operators associated to subshifts of finite type, for which we obtain a result of independent interest.
Let $X$ be a Hadamard manifold, and $Γ$ a non-elementary discrete group of isometries of $X$ which contains a rank one isometry. We relate the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow of the quotient orbifold $M=X/Γ$ to the behavior of the Poincar{é} series of $Γ$. Precisely, the aim of this paper is to extend the so-called theorem of Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan -- well-known for manifolds of pinched negative curvature -- to the framework of rank one orbifolds. Moreover, we derive some important properties for $Γ$-invariant conformal densities supported on the geometric limit set of $Γ$.
We study a quantum system in a Riemannian manifold M on which a Lie group G acts isometrically. The path integral on M is decomposed into a family of path integrals on a quotient space Q=M/G and the reduced path integrals are completely classified by irreducible unitary representations of G. It is not necessary to assume that the action of G on M is either free or transitive. Hence the quotient space M/G may have orbifold singularities. Stratification geometry, which is a generalization of the concept of principal fiber bundle, is necessarily introduced to describe the path integral on M/G. Us…
