A nonlinear algebraic equation system of 5 variables is numerically solved, which is derived from the application of the Fourier transform to a differential equation system that allows modeling the behavior of the temperatures and the efficiencies of a hybrid solar receiver, which in simple terms is the combination of a photovoltaic system with a thermoelectric system. In addition, a way to reduce the previous system to a nonlinear system of only 2 variables is presented. Naturally, reducing algebraic equation systems of dimension N to systems of smaller dimensions has the main advantage of reducing the number of variables involved in a problem, but the analytical expressions of the systems become more complicated. However, to minimize this disadvantage, an iterative method that does not explicitly depend on the analytical complexity of the system to be solved is used. A fractional iterative method, valid for one and several variables, that uses the properties of fractional calculus, in particular the fact that the fractional derivatives of constants are not always zero, to find solutions of nonlinear systems is presented.
In this article, we propose a linearized fully-discrete scheme for solving a time fractional nonlocal diffusion-wave equation of Kirchhoff type. The scheme is established by using the finite element method in space and the $L1$ scheme in time. We derive the $α$-robust \textit{a priori} bound and \textit{a priori} error estimate for the fully-discrete solution in $L^{\infty}\big(H^1_0(Ω)\big)$ norm, where $α\in (1,2)$ is the order of time fractional derivative. Finally, we perform some numerical experiments to verify the theoretical results.
In this paper, the Lie symmetry analysis is proposed for a space-time convection-diffusion fractional differential equations with the Riemann-Liouville derivative by (2+1) independent variables and one dependent variable. We find a reduction form of our governed fractional differential equation using the similarity solution of our Lie symmetry. One-dimensional optimal system of Lie symmetry algebras is found. We present a computational method via the spectral method based on Bernstein's operational matrices to solve the two-dimensional fractional heat equation with some initial conditions.
We introduce a symmetric fractional-order reduction (SFOR) method to construct numerical algorithms on general nonuniform temporal meshes for semilinear fractional diffusion-wave equations. By using the novel order reduction method, the governing problem is transformed to an equivalent coupled system, where the explicit orders of time-fractional derivatives involved are all $α/2$ $(1<α<2)$. The linearized L1 scheme and Alikhanov scheme are then proposed on general time meshes. Under some reasonable regularity assumptions and weak restrictions on meshes, the optimal convergence is derived for t…

We consider parametrized problems driven by spatially nonlocal integral operators with parameter-dependent kernels. In particular, kernels with varying nonlocal interaction radius $δ> 0$ and fractional Laplace kernels, parametrized by the fractional power $s\in(0,1)$, are studied. In order to provide an efficient and reliable approximation of the solution for different values of the parameters, we develop the reduced basis method as a parametric model order reduction approach. Major difficulties arise since the kernels are not affine in the parameters, singular, and discontinuous. Moreover, th…

The multigrid-reduction-in-time (MGRIT) technique has proven to be successful in achieving higher run-time speedup by exploiting parallelism in time. The goal of this article is to develop and analyze a MGRIT algorithm, using FCF-relaxation with time-dependent time-grid propagators, to seek the finite element approximations of unsteady fractional Laplacian problems. The multigrid with line smoother proposed in [L. Chen, R. H. Nochetto, E. Ot{á}rola, A. J. Salgado, Math. Comp. 85 (2016) 2583--2607] is chosen to be the spatial solver. Motivated by [B. S. In this paper, we study a fractional-order variant of the asymptotical regularization method, called {\it Fractional Asymptotical Regularization (FAR)}, for solving linear ill-posed operator equations in a Hilbert space setting. We assign the method to the general linear regularization schema and prove that under certain smoothness assumptions, FAR with fractional order in the range $(1,2)$ yields an acceleration with respect to comparable order optimal regularization methods. Based on the one-step Adams-Moulton method, a novel iterative regularization scheme is developed for the numerical rea…
This article is concerned with the derivation of numerical reconstruction schemes for the inverse moving source problem on determining source profiles in (time-fractional) evolution equations. As a continuation of the theoretical result on the uniqueness, we adopt a minimization procedure with regularization to construct iterative thresholding schemes for the reduced backward problems on recovering one or two unknown initial value(s). Moreover, an elliptic approach is proposed to solve a convection equation in the case of two profiles.
In this work, an inverse problem in the fractional diffusion equation with random source is considered. The measurements used are the statistical moments of the realizations of single point data $u(x_0,t,ω).$ We build the representation of the solution $u$ in integral sense, then prove that the unknowns can be bounded by the moments theoretically. For the numerical reconstruction, we establish an iterative algorithm with regularized Levenberg-Marquardt type and some numerical results generated from this algorithm are displayed. For the case of highly heterogeneous media, the Generalized Multis…
This paper presents an efficient spectral method for solving the fractional Fredholm integro-differential equations. The non-smoothness of the solutions to such problems leads to the performance of spectral methods based on the classical polynomials such as Chebyshev, Legendre, Laguerre, etc, with a low order of convergence. For this reason, the development of classic numerical methods to solve such problems becomes a challenging issue. Since the non-smooth solutions have the same asymptotic behavior with polynomials of fractional powers, therefore, fractional basis functions are the best cand…
Acceleration of the order of convergence of a family of fractional fixed point methods and its implementation in the solution of a nonlinear algebraic system related to hybrid solar receivers
In this article, we are concerned with the analysis on the numerical reconstruction of the spatial component in the source term of a time-fractional diffusion equation. This ill-posed problem is solved through a stabilized nonlinear minimization system by an appropriately selected Tikhonov regularization. The existence and the stability of the optimization system are demonstrated. The nonlinear optimization problem is approximated by a fully discrete scheme, whose convergence is established under a novel result verified in this study that the $H^1$-norm of the solution to the discrete forward …
Metal artifact reduction (MAR) is a challenging problem in computed tomography (CT) imaging. A popular class of MAR methods replace sinogram measurements that are corrupted by metal with artificial data. While these ``projection completion'' approaches are successful in eliminating severe artifacts, secondary artifacts may be introduced by the artificial data. In this paper, we propose an approach which uses projection completion to generate a prior image, which is then incorporated into an iterative reconstruction algorithm based on the superiorization framework. The prior image is reconstruc…
In this paper, based on the developed nonlinear fourth-order operator and method of order reduction, a novel fourth-order compact difference scheme is constructed for the mixed-type time-fractional Burgers' equation, from which $L_1$-discretization formula is employed to deal with the terms of fractional derivative, and the nonlinear convection term is discretized by nonlinear compact difference operator. Then a fully discrete compact difference scheme can be established by approximating spatial second-order derivative with classic compact difference formula. The convergence and stability are …
Spectral graph sparsification aims to find ultra-sparse subgraphs which can preserve spectral properties of original graphs. In this paper, a new spectral criticality metric based on trace reduction is first introduced for identifying spectrally important off-subgraph edges. Then, a physics-inspired truncation strategy and an approach using approximate inverse of Cholesky factor are proposed to compute the approximate trace reduction efficiently. Combining them with the iterative densification scheme in \cite{feng2019grass} and the strategy of excluding spectrally similar off-subgraph edges in…
This paper is concerned with a blood flow problem coupled with a slow plaque growth at the artery wall. In the model, the micro (fast) system is the Navier-Stokes equation with a periodically applied force and the macro (slow) system is a fractional reaction equation, which is used to describe the plaque growth with memory effect. We construct an auxiliary temporal periodic problem and an effective time-average equation to approximate the original problem and analyze the approximation error of the corresponding linearized PDE (Stokes) system, where the simple front-tracking technique is used t…
