In this work, an inverse problem in the fractional diffusion equation with random source is considered. The measurements used are the statistical moments of the realizations of single point data $u(x_0,t,ω).$ We build the representation of the solution $u$ in integral sense, then prove that the unknowns can be bounded by the moments theoretically. For the numerical reconstruction, we establish an iterative algorithm with regularized Levenberg-Marquardt type and some numerical results generated from this algorithm are displayed. For the case of highly heterogeneous media, the Generalized Multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) will be employed.
In this work, we investigate the recovery of a parameter in a diffusion process given by the order of derivation in time for a class of diffusion type equations, including both classical and time-fractional diffusion equations, from the flux measurement observed at one point on the boundary. The mathematical model for time-fractional diffusion equations involves a Djrbashian-Caputo fractional derivative in time. We prove a uniqueness result in an unknown medium (e.g., diffusion coefficients, obstacle, initial condition and source), i.e., the recovery of the order of derivation in a diffusion p…
In this work, we study an inverse problem of recovering information about the weight in distributed-order time-fractional diffusion from the observation at one single point on the domain boundary. In the absence of an explicit knowledge of the medium, we prove that the one-point observation can uniquely determine the support bound of the weight. The proof is based on asymptotics of the data, analytic continuation and Titchmarch convolution theorem. When the medium is known, we give an alternative proof of an existing result, i.e., the one-point boundary observation uniquely determines the weig…
Inverse problem for multi-term fractional parabolic equation in two dimensional space, involving m + 1 Caputo fractional derivatives in time, is investigated. Presence of nonlocal boundary conditions leads to a non-self-adjoint spectral problem. A bi-orthogonal system of functions is used to construct the solution that involves double infinite series. Properties of multinomial Mittag-Leffler function and eigenfunctions are used to prove the classical nature of the solution under certain regularity conditions on the given datum.
In this paper we study the inverse problem of identifying a source or an initial state in a time-fractional diffusion equation from the knowledge of a single boundary measurement. We derive logarithmic stability estimates for both inversions. These results show that the ill-posedness increases exponentially when the fractional derivative order tends to zero, while it exponentially decreases when the regularity of the source or the initial state becomes larger. The stability estimate concerning the problem of recovering the initial state can be considered as a weak observability inequality in c…
We revisit the problem of recovering wave speeds and density across a curved interface from reflected wave amplitudes. Such amplitudes have been exploited for decades in (exploration) seismology in this context. However, the analysis in seismology has been based on linearization and mostly flat interfaces. Here, we present a nonlinear analysis allowing curved interfaces, establish uniqueness and provide a reconstruction, while making the notion of amplitude precise through a procedure rooted in microlocal analysis.
This paper is concerned with an inverse problem of recovering a potential term and fractional order in a one-dimensional subdiffusion problem, which involves a Djrbashian-Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ in time, from the lateral Cauchy data. In the model, we do not assume a full knowledge of the initial data and the source term, since they might be unavailable in some practical applications. We prove the unique recovery of the spatially-dependent potential coefficient and the order $α$ of the derivation simultaneously from the measured trace data at one end point, when the mo…
We study an inverse problem for fractional elasticity. In analogy to the classical problem of linear elasticity, we consider the unique recovery of the Lamé parameters associated to a linear, isotropic fractional elasticity operator from fractional Dirichlet-to-Neumann data. In our analysis we make use of a fractional matrix Schrödinger equation via a generalization of the so-called Liouville reduction, a technique classically used in the study of the scalar conductivity equation. We conclude that unique recovery is possible if the Lamé parameters agree and are constant in the exterior, and th…
In this work, we study an inverse problem of recovering a space-time dependent diffusion coefficient in the subdiffusion model from the distributed observation, where the mathematical model involves a Djrbashian-Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ in time. The main technical challenges of both theoretical and numerical analysis lie in the limited smoothing properties due to the fractional differential operator and high degree of nonlinearity of the forward map from the unknown diffusion coefficient to the distributed observation. We establish two conditional stability results usi…
In this work, we investigate an inverse problem of recovering multiple orders in a time-fractional diffusion model from the data observed at one single point on the boundary. We prove the unique recovery of the orders together with their weights, which does not require a full knowledge of the domain or medium properties, e.g., diffusion and potential coefficients, initial condition and source in the model. The proof is based on Laplace transform and asymptotic expansion. Further, inspired by the analysis, we propose a numerical procedure for recovering these parameters based on a nonlinear lea…
We study the positive principal eigenvalue of a weighted problem associated with the Neumann spectral fractional Laplacian. This analysis is related to the investigation of the survival threshold in population dynamics. Our main result concerns the optimization of such threshold with respect to the fractional order $s\in(0,1]$, the case $s=1$ corresponding to the standard Neumann Laplacian: when the habitat is not too fragmented, the principal positive eigenvalue can not have local minima for $0<s<1$. As a consequence, the best strategy for survival is either following the diffusion with $s=1$…
We study a class of nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations with a harvesting term where the nonlocal operator is given by a Bernstein function of the Laplacian. In particular, it includes the fractional Laplacian, fractional relativistic operators, sum of fractional Laplacians of different order etc. We study existence, uniqueness and multiplicity results of the solutions to the steady state equation. We also consider the parabolic counterpart and establish the long time asymptotic of the solutions. Our proof techniques rely on both analytic and probabilistic arguments.
Let $A\in\mathrm{Sym}(n\times n)$ be an elliptic 2-tensor. Consider the anisotropic fractional Schrödinger operator $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$, where $\mathscr{L}_A^s:=(-\nabla\cdot(A(x)\nabla))^s$, $s\in (0, 1)$ and $q\in L^\infty$. We are concerned with the simultaneous recovery of $q$ and possibly embedded soft or hard obstacles inside $q$ by the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map outside a bounded domain $Ω$ associated with $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$. It is shown that a single measurement can uniquely determine the embedded obstacle, independent of the surrounding potential $q$. If multiple measure…
This paper considers the attenuated Westervelt equation in pressure formulation. The attenuation is by various models proposed in the literature and characterised by the inclusion of non-local operators that give power law damping as opposed to the exponential of classical models. The goal is the inverse problem of recovering a spatially dependent coefficient in the equation, the parameter of nonlinearity $κ(x)$, in what becomes a nonlinear hyperbolic equation with nonlocal terms. The overposed measured data is a time trace taken on a subset of the domain or its boundary. We shall show injecti…
In this paper, we study forward problem and inverse problem for the fractional magnetic Schrodinger equation with nonlinear electric potential. We first investigate the maximum principle for the linearized equation and apply it to show that the problem is well-posed under suitable assumptions on the exterior data. Moreover, we explore uniqueness of recovery of both magnetic and electric potentials.
Assume that $(u_n)$ is a sequence of solutions to heterogeneous equations with rough coefficients and fractional derivatives, weakly converging to zero in ${\rm L}^p(\R^{d+m})$, with $p>1$. We prove that the sequence of averaged quantities $(\int ρ(\my) u_n(\mx,\my) d\my)$ is strongly precompact in $\Ljl\Rd$ for any $ρ\in \Cc{\R^m}$, provided that restrictive non-degeneracy conditions are satisfied. These are fulfilled for elliptic, parabolic, fractional convection-diffusion equations, as well as for parabolic equations with a fractional time derivative. The main tool that we are using is an a…
We consider the inverse source problem of determining a source term depending on both time and space variable for fractional and classical diffusion equations in a cylindrical domain from boundary measurements. With suitable boundary conditions we prove that some class of source terms which are independent of one space direction, can be reconstructed from boundary measurements. Actually, we prove that this inverse problem is well-posed. We establish also some results of Lipschitz stability for the recovery of source terms which we apply to the stable recostruction of time-dependent coefficient…
In this work, we prove some trace theorems for function spaces with a nonlocal character that contain the classical $W^{s,p}$ space as a subspace. The result we obtain generalizes well known trace theorems for $W^{s,p}(Ω)$ functions which has a well-defined $W^{1-s/p, p}$ trace on the boundary of a domain with sufficient regularity. The new generalized spaces are associated with norms that are characterized by nonlocal interaction kernels defined heterogeneously with a special localization feature on the boundary. Intuitively speaking, the class contains functions that are as rough as an $L^p$…
In this paper, we are concerned with an epidemic reaction-diffusion system with nonlinear incidence mechanism of the form $S^qI^p\,(p,\,q>0)$. The coefficients of the system are spatially heterogeneous and time dependent (particularly time periodic). We first establish the $L^\infty$-bounds of the solutions of a class of systems, which improve some previous results in [58]. Based on such estimates, we then study the long-time behavior of the solutions of the system. Our results reveal the delicate effect of the infection mechanism, transmission rate, recovery rate and disease-induced mortality…

In this article, we study a model problem featuring a Lévy process in a domain with semi-transparent boundary by considering the following perturbed fractional Laplacian operator \[\mathscr{L}_{b,q} := (-Δ)^t + (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} \ b (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} + q, \quad 0<s<t<1\] on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. While the non-locality of the fraction Laplacian $(-Δ)^t$ depends on entire $\mathbb{R}^n$, in its non-local perturbation the non-locality depends on the domain $Ω$ through the regional fractional Laplacian term $(-Δ)^{s/2}_Ω$ and $b$ exhibits the semi-transparency of the process. W…
