Spherical time projection chambers (TPC), also known as spherical proportional counters, are employed in the search for rare phenomena, such as light Dark Matter candidates. The spherical TPC exhibits a number of essential features, making it a promising candidate for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay ($β\beta0ν$). A tonne-scale spherical TPC experiment could cover a region of parameter space relevant for the inverted mass hierarchy with a few years of data taking. In this direction, the major R\&D goal of the R2D2 effort is the demonstration of the required energy resolution. First results from an argon-filled prototype detector are reported, demonstrating an energy resolution of 1.1\% FWHM for 5.3~MeV $α$ tracks in the 0.2 to 1.1~bar pressure range. This is a major milestone in terms of energy resolution, paving the way for further studies with xenon gas, and the possible use of this technology for $β\beta0ν$ searches.
A new concept, the spherical TPC, presents unique advantages when low energy neutrinos are to be detected. Some of the applications are: a) observation of the e oscillation when emitted by a tritium source (<E e > = 14 keV) in a 10 m radius sphere. This project, baptized NOSTOS, intends to give the mixing angle 13, the Weinberg angle and a much lower limit (< 10-12 ?B) of the neutrino magnetic moment, b) an array of small (radius 2-4 m), cheap spheres scattered around the world would be perfect to monitor extragalactic supernovae, c) detect the spectrum of low energy (pp - 7Be) solar neutrinos…
The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for the International Linear Collider will need to measure about 200 track points with a resolution close to 100 $μ$m. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC could achieve the desired resolution with existing techniques using sub-millimeter width pads at the expense of a large increase in the detector cost and complexity. We have recently applied a new MPGD readout concept of charge dispersion to a prototype GEM-TPC and demonstrated the feasibility of achieving good resolution with pads similar in width to the ones used for the proportional wire TPC. …
The new concept of the spherical TPC aims at relatively large target masses with low threshold and background, keeping an extremely simple and robust operation. Such a device would open the way to detect the neutrino-nucleus interaction, which, although a standard process, remains undetected due to the low energy of the neutrino-induced nuclear recoils. The progress in the development of the fist 1 m$^3$ prototype at Saclay is presented. Other physics goals of such a device could include supernova detection, low energy neutrino oscillations and study of non-standard properties of the neutrino,…
A large volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) has been proposed as main tracking device at the International Linear Collider (ILC). Gas electron multipliers (GEMs) are studied as potential replacement of the conventional wire based gas amplification system of TPCs. This talk presents recent results from R&D activities with a small GEM-TPC prototype. The spatial resolution was measured for different magnetic fields up to 4 T.
A large volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is being considered for the central charged particle tracker for the detector for the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC). To meet the ILC-TPC spatial resolution challenge of ~100 microns with a manageable number of readout pads and channels of electronics, Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are being developed which could use pads comparable in width to the proportional-wire/cathode-pad TPC. We have built a prototype GEM readout TPC with 2 mm x 6 mm pads using the new concept of charge dispersion in MPGDs with a resistive anode. The depend…
We present the prospects for detection of KK-axions using a large volume spherical TPC through natural decay to two gammas. The higher excited mass states of this axion model allows to reach densities which could be detectable by this method. We show the capability of this detector to detect 2-prong events coming from rest-mass axion decays and we provide efficiencies obtained under some gas mixtures and pressure conditions. The sensitivity limit of a future experiment with existing detectors geometry has been estimated for the case of zero background limit.
The results of a beam test performed at the KEK PS in June 2005 are presented. Drift properties of an argon-isobutane mixture have been accurately measured and compared with predictions at magnetic fields between 0 and 1 Tesla. The r.m.s. point resolution of a padrow is compared with simulation and with an analytical calculation. The fundamental limitations due to detector geometry and gas properties are reviewed and the measured performances of the detector are found to be close to this limit. A numerical application to the case of a Linear Collider TPC is presented.
A large volume TPC is a leading candidate for the central tracking detector at a future high energy linear collider. To improve the resolution a new readout based on micro-pattern gas detectors is being developed. Measurements of the spatial resolution of cosmic-ray tracks in a GEM TPC are presented. We find that the resolution suffers if the readout pads are too wide with respect to the charge distribution at the readout plane due to insufficient charge sharing. For narrow pads of 2 x 6 mm**2 we measure a resolution of 100 micometer at short drift distances in the absence of an axial magnetic…
The coherent contribution of all neutrons in neutrino nucleus scattering due to the neutral current offers a realistic prospect of detecting supernova neutrinos. As a matter of fact. for a typical supernova at 10 kpc, about 1000 events are expected usinga spherical gaseous detector of radius 4 m andemploying Xe gas at a pressure of 10 Atm. We propose a world wide network of several such simple, stable and low cost supernova detectors with a running time of a few centuries.
Several new experimental concepts in high-energy particle physics have been proposed in recent years. The physical goals include precisely measuring the properties of particles such as Higgs, Z and W, and even looking for signs of new physics at future colliders. To meet the evolving requirements for particle track detector, Time Projection Chamber(TPC) detector prototype integrated with a UV laser track system was developed for the main track detector at Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC). This prototype consists of 6 horizontal laser tracks around TPC detector chamber, a fast electron…
The TPC for the International Linear Collider (ILC) will need to measure about 200 track points with a transverse resolution close to 100 microns. The resolution goal is beyond the capability of the conventional proportional wire/cathode pad TPC and Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) are being developed to meet the challenge. The standard MPGD readout techniques will, however, have difficulty in achieving the ILC-TPC resolution goal with the 2 mm x 6 mm pads as was initially envisioned. Proposals for smaller width pads will improve the resolution but will require a larger number of readout cha…
Supernova neutrinos can easily be detected by a spherical gaseous TPC detector measuring very low energy nuclear recoils. The expected rates are quite large for a neutron rich target since the neutrino nucleus neutral current interaction yields a coherent contribution of all neutrons. As a matter of fact for a typical supernova at 10 kpc, about 1000 events are expected using a spherical detector of radius 4 m with Xe gas at a pressure of 10 Atm. A world wide network of several such simple, stable and low cost supernova detectors with a running time of a few centuries is quite feasible.
The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmi…
The specific energy loss (dE/dx) resolution is critical for particle identification and separation in TPC. In connection with the R&D for the TPC at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), we find the laser ionisation obeys the Gaussian distribution theoretically and experimentally. Based on this, we develop a novel method using a 266 nm UV laser to measure the dE/dx resolution. Comparing to the traditional methods with particle beams or cosmic rays, the novel method with 266 nm UV laser is more convenient and flexible. We verify the method's feasibility with a TPC prototype and extrap…
The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) can identify particle species using the energy loss (dE/dx) measured by the readout pad rows. The dE/dx resolution for the ILD (International Large Detector) -TPC for the International Linear Collider experiment is expected to have high resolution for clear identification. The dE/dx resolution of our prototype TPC with gating device (gating GEM) to suppress ions feedback was measured using the electron test beam in a magnet field at the facility in DESY. The dE/dx resolution for ILD-TPC was estimated using this test beam data. The signal charge was measured as…
A high momentum resolution is required for the precision measurement of Higgs boson at the International Linear Collider (ILC) using the recoil mass technique. The International Large Detector (ILD) is designed to meet this requirement by an MPGD-readout Time Projection Chamber (TPC) providing about 200 sample points each with a spatial resolution of 100 $μ$m operated in a magnetic field of 3.5 T. However, there is a potential problem that many positive ions generated in the gas amplification process in the end-plane detector modules would flow back into the drift volume of the TPC and distort…
We propose a "thin" detector as a high-angular-precision telescope and polarimeter for cosmic gamma-rays above the pair-creation threshold. We have built a demonstrator based on a gaseous TPC. We are presently characterizing the detector with charged cosmic rays in the laboratory. Here we present some of its properties.
A new technique for medical imaging, "3γ imaging", is studied by our group at SUBATECH for few years. A small liquid xenon time projection chamber prototype has been built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. With an ultra-low-noise front-end electronics, the energy deposit and resolution of 511 keV γ-ray as a function of drift electric field (E) is measured with high precision. 500 μm of z resolution is estimated by measuring the charge carriers drift velocity and time resolution.
The measurement of neutrino magnetic moment larger than $10^{-19}μ_B$ would be a clear signature of physics beyond the standard model other than the existence of massive Dirac neutrinos. The use of a spherical proportional counter detector filled with gas at 40 bar located near a nuclear reactor would be a simple way to perform such a measurement exploiting the developments made on such a technology for the search of dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. Different targets can be used just by replacing the gas: xenon, CF$_4$ and argon were compared and the sensitivity in one year of d…
The detection of galactic supernova (SN) neutrinos represents one of the future frontiers of low-energy neutrino physics and astrophysics. The neutron coherence of neutral currents (NC) allows quite large cross sections in the case of neutron rich targets, which can be exploited in detecting earth and sky neutrinos by measuring nuclear recoils. They are relatively cheap and easy to maintain. The relevant NC cross sections are not dependent on flavor conversions and, thus, their measurement will provide useful information about the neutrino source. In particular they will yield information abou…
AXEL is a high pressure xenon gas TPC detector being developed for neutrinoless double-beta decay search. We use the proportional scintillation mode with a new electroluminescence light detection system to achieve high energy resolution in a large detector. The detector also has tracking capabilities, which enable significant background rejection. To demonstrate our detection technique, we constructed a 10L prototype detector filled with up to 10bar xenon gas. The FWHM energy resolution obtained by the prototype detector is 4.0 $\pm$ 0.30 $\%$ at 122 keV, which corresponds to 0.9 ~ 2.0 % when …
The performance of an electroluminescence (EL) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with a multi avalanche photodiode (APD) readout was studied in pure xenon at 3.8 bar. Intercalibration and reconstruction methods were developed and applied to the data yielding energy resolutions as good as 5.3$\pm$0.1 \% FWHM for 59.5 keV gammas from $^{241}$Am. This result was reproduced with a Monte Carlo (MC) based on Geant4 and Penelope which predicted 5.2 \% FWHM for the used setup. Point resolutions of $\approx 0.5$ mm were obtained with a pitch of 15 mm between the APDs. These results show that multi-APD read…
Negative-ion time projection chambers(TPCs) have been studied for low-rate and high-resolution applications such as dark matter search experiments. Recently, a full volume fiducialization in a self-triggering TPC was realized. This innovative technology demonstrated a significant reduction in the background with MWPC-TPCs. We studied negative-ion TPC using the μ-PIC+GEM system and obtained sufficient gas gain with CS$_{2}$gas and SF$_{6}$ gas at low pressures. We expect an improvement in detector sensitivity and angular resolution with better electronics.
The ALICE Collaboration is planning a major upgrade of its central barrel detectors to be able to cope with the increased LHC luminosity beyond 2020. For the TPC, this implies a replacement of the currently used gated MWPCs (Multi-Wire Proportional Chamber) by GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) based readout chambers. In order to prove, that the present particle identification capabilities via measurement of the specific energy loss are retained after the upgrade, a prototype of the ALICE IROC (Inner Readout Chamber) has been evaluated in a test beam campaign at the CERN PS. The d$E$/d$x$ resolutio…
Several efforts are ongoing for the development of spherical gaseous time projection chamber detectors for the observation of rare phenomena such as weakly interacting massive particles or neutrino interactions. The proposed detector, thanks to its simplicity, low energy threshold and energy resolution, could be used to observe the $β\beta0ν$ process i.e. the neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work, a specific setup is presented for the measurement of $β\beta0ν$ on 50~kg of $^{136}$Xe. The different backgrounds are studied, demonstrating the possibility to reach a total background per yea…
We present in this work measurements performed with a small Micromegas-TPC using a xenon-trimethylamine (Xe-TMA) Penning-mixture as filling gas. Measurements of gas gain and energy resolutions for 22.1 keV X-rays are presented, spanning several TMA concentrations and pressures between 1 and 10 bar. Across this pressure range, the best energy resolution and largest increase in gain at constant field (a standard figure for characterizing Penning-like energy transfers) is observed to be in the 1.5%-2.5% TMA region. A gain increase (at constant field) up to a factor 100 and a best energy resolutio…
We developed a prototype time projection chamber using gas electron multipliers (GEM-TPC) for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. To investigate its performance, we conducted a beam test with 3 kinds of gases (Ar(90%)-CH4(10%), Ar(70%)-C2H6(30%) and CF4). Detection efficiency of 99%, and spatial resolution of 79 $μ$m in the pad-row direction and 313 $μ$m in the drift direction were achieved. The test results show that the GEM-TPC meets the requirements for high energy heavy ion collision experiments. The configuration and performance of the GEM-TPC are described.
A time projection chamber (TPC) can be used to measure the polarization of gamma rays with excellent angular precision and sensitivity in the MeV-GeV energy range through the conversion of photons to e+e- pairs. The Hermetic ARgon POlarimeter (HARPO) prototype was built to demonstrate this concept. It was recently tested in the polarized photon beam at the NewSUBARU facility in Japan. We present this data-taking run, which demonstrated the excellent performance of the HARPO TPC.
In MPGD detectors evaluation of the space resolution with the charge centroid (CC) method provides large uncertainty when the impinging particle is not perpendicular to the readout plane. An improvement of the position reconstruction, and thus of the space resolution, is represented by the $μ$TPC algorithm. In this work we report the application of this algorithm to the $μ$-Resistive WELL detector. Moreover a combination of the CC method with the $μ$TPC algorithm is proposed, showing an almost uniform resolution over a wide angular range.
In this paper, we study how pixel size influences energy resolution for a proposed pixelated detector---a high sensitivity, low cost, and real-time radon monitor based on \textit{Topmetal-${II}^-$} time projection chamber (TPC). Using \textit{Topmetal-${II}^-$} sensors assembled by 0.35 $μ$m CMOS Integrated Circuit process, this monitor is designed to improve the spatial resolution of detecting radon alpha particles. Concerning small pixel size might has a side effect of worsening energy resolution due to lower signal to noise ratio, a Great4-based simulation is used to figure out energy resol…
We discuss recent advances in the development of cryogenic gaseous photomultipliers (GPM), for possible use in dark matter and other rare-event searches using noble-liquid targets. We present results from a 10 cm diameter GPM coupled to a dual-phase liquid xenon (LXe) TPC, demonstrating - for the first time - the feasibility of recording both primary ("S1") and secondary ("S2") scintillation signals. The detector comprised a triple Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM) structure with cesium iodide photocathode on the first element; it was shown to operate stably at 180 K with gains above 10^5,…
This paper describes a new method for optical readout of Time Projection Chambers (TPCs), based on the Linearly Graded Silicon Photomultiplier (LG-SiPM). This is a single photon-sensitive detector with excellent timing and 2D position resolution developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento (FBK). The LG-SiPM produces time-varying voltage signals that are used to reconstruct the 3D position and energy of ionisation tracks generated inside the TPC. The TPC used in this work contained room-temperature CF$_4$ gas at a pressure of 100 mbar, with two THGEMs to produce secondary scintillation light.…
For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY. In a test campaign at the DESY II Test Beam Facility the performance of three of these modules was investigated. In this contribution results were presented on the particle identification capab…
We present measurements with a GEM based TPC prototypes and the TimePix CMOS ASIC as charge collecting anode. Tests with a small prototype were performed in a 5 GeV electron beam at DESY. Different GEM orientations and geometries were tested. It is shown that the point resolution for short drift distances is better than 20 micrometer. The achieved time resolution is better than 10 ns at 100 MHz clock frequency. Furthermore, experimental studies with an enlarged pixel size are addressed. To study the performance for longer drift distances a chamber with 26 cm drift length is operated in Bonn. U…
The proposed sPHENIX detector at RHIC is being designed to study with unprecedented precision the nature of the Quark Gluon Plasma, or QGP, at RHIC through measurement of jets, jet correlations, and Y particles. To reach the goal of producing a high mass-resolution reconstruction of the Y(nS) states, a compact TPC covering pseudorapidities < |1.1| is under construction to provide sPHENIX with the necessary invariant mass resolution. Similar to the ALICE-TPC upgrade, the sPHENIX TPC design presently utilizes quadruple- GEM detectors. Utilizing novel zigzag patterned readout pads, a modified SAM…
In recent years Gas Electron Multipliers have proven to be reliable amplification stages at high beam rates, and can be used also in Time Projection Chambers. Our group developed a 1 dm$^3$ active volume double-GEM TPC, with spatial resolution of 50 $μm$ and 280 $μ$m. Custom designed FPGA data acquisition system enables rate capability for about 100 kHz$\cdot$mm$^{-2}$, providing excellent track-by-track position and angular information, better than 0.1 mm and 1 mrad respectively. The wide dynamic range of the system enables identification from $^{4}$He up to $^{86}$Kr using ionization measure…
A micro time-projection-chamber (micro-TPC) with a detection volume of 23*28*31 cm^3 was developed, and its fundamental performance was examined. The micro-TPC consists of a micro pixel chamber with a detection area of 31*31 cm^2 as a two-dimensional imaging device and a gas electron multiplier with an effective area of 23*28 cm^2 as a pre-gas-multiplier. The micro-TPC was operated at a gas gain of 50,000, and energy resolutions and spatial resolutions were measured.
A negative ion micro time projection chamber (NI$μ$TPC) was developed and its performance studied. An NI$μ$TPC is a novel technology that enables the measurement of absolute $z$ coordinates for self-triggering TPCs. This technology provides full-fiducialization analysis, which is not possible with conventional gaseous TPCs, and is useful for directional dark matter searches in terms of background rejection and the improvement of the angular resolution. The developed NI$μ$TPC prototype had a detection volume of 12.8 $\times$ 25.6 $\times$ 144 mm$^{3}$. The absolute $z$ coordinate was determined…
A new fast neutron spectrometer named n-TPC has been designed by LPRI (Key Laboratory of Particle & Radiation Imaging, Ministry of Education) at Tsinghua University. The neutron energy spectrum can be calculated from the recoil angle and energy of the recoil proton detected by a 704-pad GEM-TPC. In beam tests at IHIP (Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, Peking University) in 2014, n-TPC performed better than 6 percents at 6MeV energy resolution and 0.5 percents detection efficiency. To find the best working parameters (the component and proportion of the gas, the high voltage between each GEM laye…
For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY and tested at the DESY II Test Beam Facility. After introducing the readout module and the infrastructure at the test beam facility, the performance related to single point and double-hit resolu…
AXEL is a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0n2b) search. The AXEL has a unique readout system called ELCC which has a cellular structure and photosensors to detect electroluminescence light produced by ionization electrons. We demonstrated the performance of the ELCC with a small prototype detector (AXEL-HP10L). The obtained energy resolution corresponds to 0.82 -- 1.74% (FWHM) at the 0n2b Q-value. We are constructing a new prototype (AXEL-HP180L) in order to study the energy resolution at the Q-value of 0n2b with a new design of ELCC with uni…
The spatial resolution along the pad-row direction was measured with a GEM-based TPC prototype for the future linear collider experiment in order to understand its performance for tracks with finite projected angles with respect to the pad-row normal. The degradation of the resolution due to the angular pad effect was confirmed to be consistent with the prediction of a simple calculation taking into account the cluster-size distribution and the avalanche fluctuation.
A neutron time projection chamber can locate the approximate direction of a neutron hot spot with high efficiency and a 4π field of view. The angular resolution can be significantly improved by adding several plastic scintillation detectors and using coincidence events. The specific performances of such a coincidence imaging system are studied based on theoretical calculations and experimental results. The calculated value of the angular resolution is approximately 2° for the current system, which agrees well with the experimental results and sets an upper limit for the angular resolution of t…
Several experiments have been conducted worldwide, with the goal of observing low-energy nuclear recoils induced by WIMPs scattering off target nuclei in ultra-sensitive, low-background detectors. In the last few decades noble liquid detectors designed to search for dark matter in the form of WIMPs have been extremely successful in improving their sensitivities and setting the best limits. One of the crucial problems to be faced for the development of large size (multi ton-scale) liquid argon experiments is the lack of reliable and low background cryogenic PMTs: their intrinsic radioactivity, …
One of the potential problems of a Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD)-based Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is the Ion back Flow (IBF): ions generated through the avalanche amplification process flow back to the drift volume of the TPC and disarrange an electric field inside it. Consequently non-negligible degradation of azimuthal spatial resolution is caused due to this IBF. Meanwhile, it is necessary to collect primary ionized electrons to maintain intrinsic performance of the MPGDs. The MPGD based TPC is currently planned to be used as a central tracking detector of the International Large…
Optical readout of large Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with multiple Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) amplification stages has shown to provide very interesting performances for high energy particle tracking. Proposed applications for low-energy and rare event studies, such as Dark Matter search, ask for demanding performance in the keV energy range. The performance of such a readout was studied in details as a function of the electric field configuration and GEM gain by using a $^{55}$Fe source within a 7 litre sensitive volume detector developed as a part of the R\&D for the CYGNUS project.…
A new method for directional fast neutron detection is proposed based on a neutron time projection chamber (TPC) and position-sensitive plastic scintillation detectors. The detection system can efficiently locate the approximate location of a hot spot with 4π field-of-view using only the neutron TPC. Then, the system generates a high-resolution image of the hot spot using selected coincidence events in the TPC and the scintillation detectors. A prototype was built and tested using a Cf-252 source. An efficiency of 7.1x10-3 was achieved for fast searching. The angular resolution was 7.8° (full …
Spatial resolution of less than 200 um is challenging for thermal neutron detection. A novel readout scheme based on the time-projection-chamber (TPC) concept is used in a gaseous electron multiplier (GEM) detector. Thermal neutrons are captured in a single 2 um thick Boron-10 converter cathode and secondary Helium and Lithium ions are produced with a combined energy of 2.8 MeV. These ions have sufficient energy to form straight tracks of several mm length. With a time resolving 2-dimensional readout of 400 um pitch in both directions, based on APV25 chips, the ions are tracked and their respe…
In the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe, a high pressure xenon time projection chamber (HPXe-TPC) has two advantages over liquid xenon TPCs: a better energy resolution and the access to topological features, which may provide extra discrimination from background events. The PandaX-III experiment has recently proposed a 200 kg HPXe-TPC based on Micromegas readout planes, to be located at the Jinping Underground Laboratory in China. Its detection concept is based on two results obtained within the T-REX project: Micromegas readouts can be built with extremely low level…
The aim of the presented work was to develop further techniques based on a Micromegas-TPC, in order to reach a high gas gain with good energy resolution, and to search for gas mixtures suitable for rare event detection. This paper focuses on xenon, which is convenient for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay in 136 Xe. Conversely, a small admixture of xenon to CF 4 can reduce attachment in the latter. This gas mixture would be suitable for dark matter searches and the study of solar and reactor neutrinos. Various configurations of the Micromegas plane were investigated and are describe…
Current γ-ray telescopes based on photon conversions to electron-positron pairs, such as Fermi, use tungsten converters. They suffer of limited angular resolution at low energies, and their sensitivity drops below 1 GeV. The low multiple scattering in a gaseous detector gives access to higher angular resolution in the MeV-GeV range, and to the linear polarisation of the photons through the azimuthal angle of the electron-positron pair. HARPO is an R&D program to characterise the operation of a TPC (Time Projection Chamber) as a high angular-resolution and sensitivity telescope and polarimeter …
A new active target named MAIKo (Mu-PIC based Active target for Inverse Kinematics$_{\circ}$) has been developed at Kyoto University and Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. MAIKo is suited for missing-mass spectroscopy of unstable nuclei at forward scattering angles in inverse kinematics. MAIKo consists of a time projection chamber (TPC), which incorporates a micro-pixel chamber ($μ$-PIC) as the electron multiplication and collection system. In MAIKo, the medium gas also plays the role of a reaction target, thus allowing detection of low-energy recoil particles with h…
In this work we present a systematic study of Micromegas detectors in high pressure gaseous Xenon using trimethylamine (TMA) as quencher gas. Gas gains and energy resolutions for 22.1 keV X-rays are measured for pressures between 1 and 10 bar and various relative concentrations of TMA from 0.3 % to 15 %. We observe stable operation at all pressures, and a strongly enhanced gas gain, suggestive of Penning-like energy-transfer processes. The effect is present at all pressures and it is strongest at TMA concentrations ranging from 1.5 % to 3 %. Operating in this concentration range, the maximum g…
The NEXT experiment aims at searching for the hypothetical neutrinoless double-beta decay from the ${}^{136}$Xe isotope using a high-purity xenon TPC. Efficient discrimination of the events through pattern recognition of the topology of primary ionisation tracks is a major requirement for the experiment. However, it is limited by the diffusion of electrons. It is known that the addition of a small fraction of a molecular gas to xenon reduces electron diffusion. On the other hand, the electroluminescence (EL) yield drops and the achievable energy resolution may be compromised. We have studied t…
A large number of high-energy and heavy-ion experiments successfully used Time Projection Chamber (TPC) as central tracker and particle identification detector. However, the performance requirements on TPC for new high-rate particle experiments greatly exceed the abilities of traditional TPC read out by multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC). Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector has great potential to improve TPC performances when used as amplification device. In this paper we present the R&D activity on a new GEM-based TPC detector built as a prototype for the inner part for AMADEUS, a new …
