We experimentally implement a machine-learning method for accurately identifying unknown pure quantum states. The method, called single-shot measurement learning, achieves the theoretical optimal accuracy for $ε= O(N^{-1})$ in state learning and reproduction, where $ε$ and $N$ denote the infidelity and number of state copies, without employing computationally demanding tomographic methods. This merit results from the inclusion of weighted randomness in the learning rule governing the exploration of diverse learning routes. We experimentally verify the advantages of our scheme by using a linear-optics setup to prepare and measure single-photon polarization qubits. The experimental results show highly accurate state learning and reproduction exhibiting infidelity of $O(N^{-0.983})$ down to $10^{-5}$, without estimation of the experimental parameters.
The spin-coherent-state positive-operator-valued-measure (POVM) is a fundamental measurement in quantum science, with applications including tomography, metrology, teleportation, benchmarking, and measurement of Husimi phase space probabilities. We prove that this POVM is achieved by collectively measuring the spin projection of an ensemble of qubits weakly and isotropically. We apply this in the context of optimal tomography of pure qubits. We show numerically that through a sequence of weak measurements of random directions of the collective spin component, sampled discretely or in a continu…
We present bounds for distilling many copies of a pure state from an arbitrary initial state in a general quantum resource theory. Our bounds apply to operations that are able to generate no more than a $δ$ amount of resource, where $δ\geq 0$ is a given parameter. To maximize applicability of our upper bound, we assume little structure on the set of free states under consideration besides a weak form of superadditivity of the function $G_{min}(ρ)$, which measures the overlap between $ρ$ and the set of free states. Our bounds are given in terms of this function and the robustness of resource. K…
We investigate the connection between the shot-noise limit in linear interferometers and particle entanglement. In particular, we ask whether or not sub shot-noise sensitivity can be reached with all pure entangled input states of $N$ particles if they can be optimized with local operations. Results on the optimal local transformations allow us to show that for $N=2$ all pure entangled states can be made useful for sub shot-noise interferometry while for $N>2$ this is not the case. We completely classify the useful entangled states available in a bosonic two-mode interferometer. We apply our r…

We report an inductive process that allows for a sequential construction of polynomial invariants of state coefficients for multipartite quantum states. The starting point can be a physically meaningful invariant of a smaller part of the system. The process is applied to construct a chain of invariants that quantify GHZ state like non-local N-way correlations in an N qubit pure state and the sum of N-way and (N-1)-way correlations. Analytic expressions for four and three-way correlation quantifiers for four qubits, as well as, five-way and four-way correlation quantifiers for a five qubit pure…
We evaluate the one-shot entanglement of assistance for an arbitrary bipartite state. This yields another interesting result, namely a characterization of the one-shot distillable entanglement of a bipartite pure state. This result is shown to be stronger than that obtained by specializing the one-shot hashing bound to pure states. Finally, we show how the one-shot result yields the operational interpretation of the asymptotic entanglement of assistance proved in [Smolin et al., Phys. Rev. A 72, 052317 (2005)].

We characterize the distillation of quantum coherence in the one-shot setting, that is, the conversion of general quantum states into maximally coherent states under different classes of quantum operations. We show that the maximally incoherent operations (MIO) and the dephasing-covariant incoherent operations (DIO) have the same power in the task of one-shot coherence distillation. We establish that the one-shot distillable coherence under MIO and DIO is efficiently computable with a semidefinite program, which we show to correspond to a quantum hypothesis testing problem. Further, we introdu…
This work analyzes correlations arising from quantum systems subject to sequential projective measurements to certify that the system in question has a quantum dimension greater than some $d$. We refine previous known methods and show that dimension greater than two can be certified in scenarios which are considerably simpler than the ones presented before and, for the first time in this sequential projective scenario, we certify quantum systems with dimension strictly greater than three. We also perform a systematic numerical analysis in terms of robustness and conclude that performing random…
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors. However, all the previous schemes have to use at least two sequentially implemented gates to realize a general one-qubit gate. Based on two recent works, we construct two Hamiltonians and experimentally realized nonadiabatic holonomic gates by a single-shot implementation in a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system. Two noncommuting one-qubit holonomic gates, rotating along $\hat{x}$ and $\hat{z}$ axes respectively, are implemented by evolving a work qubit and a…
The extension of the Ramo-Schockley-Pellegrini theorem for quantum systems allows to define a positive-operator valued measure (POVM) for the total conduction plus displacement electrical current. The resulting current operator is characterized by two parameters, viz. the width of the associated Gaussian functions and the lapse of time between consecutive measurements. For large Gaussian dispersions and small time intervals, the operator obeys to a continuous weak-measurement scheme. Contrarily, in the limit of very narrow Gaussian widths and a single-shot measurement, the operator corresponds…

We study quantum tomography based on a stochastic continuous-time measurement record obtained from a probe field collectively interacting with an ensemble of identically prepared systems. In comparison to previous studies, we consider here the case in which the measurement-induced backaction has a nonnegligible effect on the dynamical evolution of the ensemble. We formulate a maximum likelihood estimate for the initial quantum state given only a single instance of the continuous diffusive measurement record. We apply our estimator to the simplest problem -- state tomography of a single pure qu…
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors. However, all the previous schemes have to use at least two sequentially implemented gates to realize a general one-qubit gate. In this paper, we put forward a novelty scheme by which one can directly realize an arbitrary holonomic one-qubit gate with a single-shot implementation, avoiding the extra work of combining two gates into one. Based on a three-level model driven by laser pulses, we show that any single-qubit holonomic gate can be realized by varying the detuning,…
Local pure states represent a fundamental resource in quantum information theory. In this work we obtain one-shot achievable bounds on the rates for local purity distillation, in the single-party and in the two-party cases. In both situations, local noisy operations are freely available, while in the two-party case also one-way classical communication can be used. In addition, in both situations local pure ancillas can be borrowed, as long as they are discounted from the final net rate of distillation. The one-shot rates that we obtain, written in terms of mutual information-like quantities, a…
The resource theory of quantum coherence is an important topic in quantum information science. Standard coherence distillation and dilution problems have been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we introduce and study the problem of one-shot coherence distillation with catalysts. In order to distill more coherence from a state of interest, a catalytic system can be involved and a jointly free operation is applied to both systems. The joint output state should be a maximally coherent state in tensor product with the unchanged catalysts, with some allowable fidelity error. We consider several dif…
A single-shot Toffoli, or controlled-controlled-NOT, gate is desirable for classical and quantum information processing. The Toffoli gate alone is universal for reversible computing and, accompanied by the Hadamard gate, forms a universal gate set for quantum computing. The Toffoli gate is also a key ingredient for (non-topological) quantum error correction. Currently Toffoli gates are achieved by decomposing into sequentially implemented single- and two-qubit gates, which requires much longer times and yields lower overall fidelities compared to a single-shot implementation. We develop a quan…
We demonstrate that the task of determining an unknown quantum state can be accomplished efficiently by making a sequential measurement of two observables $\hat{A}$ and $\hat{B}$, provided that the two observables are chosen in such a way that their eigenstates may form bases connected by a discrete Fourier transform. The state can be pure or mixed, the dimension of the Hilbert space and the coupling strength are arbitrary, and the experimental setup is fixed. The concept of Moyal quasicharacteristic function is introduced for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.
We propose a quantum-enhanced iterative (with $K$ steps) measurement scheme based on an ensemble of $N$ two-level probes which asymptotically approaches the Heisenberg limit $δ_K \propto R^{-K/(K+1)}$, $R$ the number of quantum resources. The protocol is inspired by Kitaev's phase estimation algorithm and involves only collective manipulation and measurement of the ensemble. The iterative procedure takes the shot-noise limited primary measurement with precision $δ_1\propto N^{-1/2}$ to increasingly precise results $δ_K\propto N^{-K/2}$. A straightforward implementation of the algorithm makes u…
