Using a model of idealized, crossed one-dimensional quantum wires we construct a novel model for a single electron on tunneling-coupled systems of one-dimensional quantum rings. We explore and find that topology can affect the energetics of the system, and can introduce frustration in the three ring case. We also study the special cases of an external magnetic field that controls the complex phase of the tunneling matrix element, and introduce the knot theory concept of "writhe" as a new topological quantity for distinguishing one hole systems. We find that writhe not only determines the energetic response of the system to magnetic field strength, but is also responsible for a single particle topological quantum phase transition involving the ground state wave function winding number.
The persistent current in two vertically coupled quantum rings containing few electrons is studied. We find that the Coulomb interaction between the rings in the absence of tunneling affects the persistent current in each ring and the ground state configurations. Quantum tunneling between the rings alters significantly the ground state and the persistent current in the system.
We study coherent charge tunneling through a one-dimensional interacting ring with a one-dimensional quantum dot embedded in one of its arms through bosonisation. The symmetries of the effective action explain many of the features such as phase change between resonances, in-phase successive resonances and phase-locking, which have been observed in experiments of coherent transport in mesoscopic rings, with a quantum dot. We also predict changes in the behaviour of the tunneling conductance in the presence of an Aharanov-Bohm flux through the ring. We argue that these results hold true in gener…
We study the tunneling current through a mesoscopic two-terminal ring with spin-orbit coupling, which is threaded by a magnetic flux. The electron-electron interaction in the ring is described in terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger model which also allows us to account for a capacitive coupling between the ring and the gate electrode. In the regime of weak tunneling, we describe how, at temperatures lower than the mean level spacing, the peak positions of the conductance depend on magnetic flux, spin-orbit coupling strength, gate voltage, charging energy, and interaction parameters (charge and spin …
Simulating quantum transport through mesoscopic, ring-shaped graphene structures, we address various quantum coherence and interference phenomena. First, a perpendicular magnetic field, penetrating the graphene ring, gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the conductance as a function of the magnetic flux, on top of the universal conductance fluctuations. At very high fluxes the interference gets suppressed and quantum Hall edge channels develop. Second, applying an electrostatic potential to one of the ring arms, $nn'n$- or $npn$-junctions can be realized with particle transmission due t…
A mesoscopic ring subject to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and sequentially coupled to an interacting quantum dot, in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux, is proposed as a flux tunable tunneling diode. The analysis of the conductance by means of the nonequilibrium Green's function technique, shows an intrinsic bistability at varying the Aharonov-Bohm flux when 2U > πΓ, U being the charging energy on the dot and Γthe effective resonance width. The bistability properties are discussed in connection with spin-switch effects and logical storage device applications.
We consider electrical transport through molecules with Heisenberg-coupled spins arranged in a ring structure in the presence of an easy-axis anisotropy. The molecules are coupled to two metallic leads and a gate. In the charged state of the ring, a Zener double-exchange mechanism links transport properties to the underlying spin structure. This leads to a remarkable contact-site dependence of the current, which for an antiferromagnetic coupling of the spins can lead to a total suppression of the zero-bias conductance when the molecule is contacted at adjacent sites.
We report a numerical study on Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect and parity selective tunneling in pn junctions based on zigzag graphene nanoribbon rings. We find that when applying a magnetic field to the ring, the AB interference can reverse the parity symmetry of incoming waves and hence can strongly modulate the parity selective transmission through the system. Therefore, the transmission between two states of different parity exhibits the AB oscillations with a π-phase shift, compared to the case of states of same parity. On this basis, it is shown that interesting effects such as giant (both pos…
We investigate tunneling across a single ferromagnetic barrier on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of a magnetization component along the bias direction, a tunneling planar Hall conductance (TPHC), transverse to the applied bias, develops. Electrostatic control of the barrier enables a giant Hall angle, with the TPHC exceeding the longitudinal tunneling conductance. By changing the in-plane magnetization direction it is possible to change the sign of both the longitudinal and transverse differential conductance without opening a gap in the topological s…
Klein tunneling, the perfect transmission of normally incident Dirac electrons across a potential barrier, has been widely studied in graphene and explored to design switches, albeit indirectly. We show that Klein tunneling maybe easier to detect for spin-momentum locked electrons crossing a PN junction along a three-dimensional topological insulator surface. In these topological insulator PN junctions (TIPNJs), the spin texture and momentum distribution of transmitted electrons can be measured electrically using a ferromagnetic probe for varying gate voltages and angles of current injection. …
We study the transmission through single and double ferromagnetic barriers on the surface of a topological insulator. By adjusting the gate voltage and magnetization oreintation, the ferromagnetic barrier can be tuned into various transmission regions, where the wavevector-dependent tunnelings are quite different. We find that the Klein tunneling can be manipulated or even be turned off. These special properties offer the possibility to control electron beams on the "topological metal". Various novel devices, such as electronic collimation, wavevector filter, magnetic and electric switchs, and…
We show conduction bands of artificial gauge field assisted atom flow in triangle optical lattice. The conduction bands are result from periodicity boundary condition of artificial magnetic flux induced phases of atoms. The positions of conduction bands depend on geometry of the atom trajectory. We consider a cell of the triangle optical lattice which is a opened system connected to its environment of Fermion atom clouds. The chemical potentials of the atom clouds are the same and the atom flow is absolutely created by a clock laser induced spin-orbit coupling. Our results are important for th…
We present topological interference effects for the tunneling of a single large spin, which are caused by the symmetry of a general class of magnetic anisotropies. The interference originates from spin Berry phases associated with different tunneling paths exposed to the same dynamics. Introducing a generalized path integral for coherent spin states, we evaluate transition amplitudes between ground as well as low-lying excited states. We show that these interference effects lead to topological selection rules and spin-parity effects for integer spins that agree with quantum selection rules and…
Electron tunneling through a single magnetic barrier in a HgTe topological insulator has been theoretically investigated. We find that the perpendicular magnetic field would not lead to spin-flip of the edge states due to the conservation of the angular moment. By tuning the magnetic field and Fermi energy, the edge channels can be transited from switch-on states to switch-off states and the current can be transmitted from unpolarized states to totally spin polarized states. These features offer us and efficient way to control the topological edge state transport, and pave a way to construct t…
We investigate a system of multiple Majorana states at the end of a topological superconducting wire coupled to a normal lead. For a minimum of three Majorana fermions at the interface, we find nontrivial renormalization physics. Interface tunneling processes can be classified in terms of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 irreducible representations of the SU(2) group. We show that the renormalization of the tunneling amplitudes belonging to different representations is completely different in that one type is suppressed, whereas the other is enhanced, depending on the sign of the interaction coupling. Th…
We report scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy investigation of graphene nanoribbons grown on an array of bunched steps of a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. Our scanning tunneling microscopy images of a graphene nanoribbons on a step terrace feature a (sqrt(3)x sqrt(3))R30° pattern of aromatic rings which define our armchair nanoribbons. This is in agreement to a simulation based on density functional theory. As another signature of the one-dimensional electronic structure, in the corresponding scanning tunneling spectroscopy spectra we find well developed, sharp Van Hove singularities.
We investigate the topological quenching of spin tunneling in Mn_12-acetate molecules with an applied magnetic field along the hard axis. The model Hamiltonian describing this system has a fourth-order term due to the tetragonal anisotropy. We treat this model using the discrete phase integral formalism in which the Schrodinger equation corresponding to the Hamiltonian becomes a nine-term recursion relation. We solve this recursion relation and find that the tunnel splitting is quenched at certain values of the applied field. We also present a qualitative treatment based on the instanton appro…
We demonstrate that the charge-spin conversion efficiency of topological insulators (TI) can be experimentally determined by injecting spin-polarized tunneling electrons into a TI. Through a comparative study between bismuth selenide and bismuth antimony telluride, we verified the topological-surface-state origin of the observed giant spin signals. By injecting energetic electrons into bismuth selenide, we further studied the energy dependence of the effective spin polarization at the TI surface. The experimentally verified large spin polarization, as well as our calculations, provides new ins…
We show that the interplay between chiral tunneling and spin-momentum locking of helical surface states leads to spin amplification and filtering in a 3D Topological Insulator (TI). Chiral tunneling across a TI pn junction allows normally incident electrons to transmit, while the rest are reflected with their spins flipped due to spin-momentum locking. The net result is that the spin current is enhanced while the dissipative charge current is simultaneously suppressed, leading to an extremely large, gate tunable spin to charge current ratio (~20) at the reflected end. At the transmitted end, t…
We study theoretically the combined effect of the spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions on the tunneling electron transport through a single-channel quantum ring threaded by magnetic flux. We focus on the high temperature case (temperature is much higher than the level spacing in the ring) and demonstrate that spin-interference effects are not suppressed by thermal averaging. In the absence of the Zeeman coupling the high-temperature tunneling conductance of the ring exhibits two types of oscillations: Aharonov-Bohm oscillations with magnetic flux and Aharonov-Casher oscillations with the strengt…
We analyze quantum charge pumping in an open ring with a dot embedded in one of its arms. We show that cyclic driving of the dot levels by a \textit{single} parameter leads to a pumped current when a static magnetic flux is simultaneously applied to the ring. Based on the computation of the Floquet-Green's functions, we show that for low driving frequencies $ω_0$, the interplay between the spatial interference through the ring plus photon-assisted tunneling gives an average direct current (dc) which is proportional to $ω_0^{2}$. The direction of the pumped current can be reversed by changing t…
Determining the detailed spin texture of topological surface states is important when one wants to apply topological insulators in spintronic devices. In principle, the in-plane spin component of the surface states can be measured by a method analogous to the so-called Meservey-Tedrow technique. In the present work we suggest that the out-of-plane spin component can be determined by spin Hall effect tunneling spectroscopy. We derive an analytical formula that allows to extract the out-of-plane spin component from spin Hall effect tunneling spectra. We test our formula using realistic tight-bin…
The two apparently disparate phenomena, viz. the Klein tunneling and the electric field driven topological phase transition(TPT), exhibited by the silicene converge on the issue of the no change in the pseudo-spin. An ensuing possibility is that the former, in the case of a normal/magnetic/normal silicene junction, may be considered theoretically as a probe to ascertain the onset of the latter. In this communication, we explore this option and calculate the total transmission probability(TTP). We find that TPT is characterized by a cusp in a plot of TTP as a function of the electric field.
The electronic transport properties in magnetically doped ultra-thin films of topological-insulators is investigated by using Landauer-buttiker formalism. The chiral selective tunneling is addressed in such systems which leads to transport gap and as a consequence current blocking. This quantum blocking of transport occurs when the magnetic states with opposite chirality are aligned energetically. This can be obsereved when an electron tunnels through a barrier or well of magnetic potential induced by the exchange field. It is proved and demonstrated that this chiral transition rule fails when…
Spin-momentum locking in the surface mode of topological insulators (TI) leads to the surface accumulation of spin-polarized electrons caused by bias current flows through TI samples. Here, we demonstrate that scanning tunneling microscopy can be used to sense this surface spin-polarized electron accumulation. We present experimental results of this sensing for Sn-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ samples by employing Fe-coated W tips as well as non-magnetic W tips. We observe a linear increase in the spin-accumulation as a function of bias current through TI samples.
We investigate the ballistic zitterbewegung dynamics and the Landau-Zener tunneling between edge and bulk states of wave packets in two-dimensional topological insulators. In bulk, we use the Ehrenfest theorem to show that an external in-plane electric field not only drifts the packet longitudinally, but also induces a transverse finite side-jump for both trivial and topological regimes. For finite ribbons of width $W$, we show that the Landau-Zener tunneling between bulk and edge states vanishes for large $W$ as their electric field-induced coupling decays with $W^{-3/2}$. This is demonstrate…
The results of scanning tunneling microscopy experiments using iron-coated tungsten tips and current-carrying bismuth selenide ($Bi_2Se_3$) samples are reported. Asymmetry in tunneling currents with respect to the change in the direction of bias currents through $Bi_2Se_3$ samples has been observed. It is argued that this asymmetry is the manifestation of surface spin-polarized electron accumulation caused by the ninety-degree electron spin-momentum locking in the topologically protected surface current mode. It is demonstrated that the manifestation of surface spin-polarized electron accumula…
We consider a simple conceptual question with respect to Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires: Can the measured non-ideal values of the zero-bias-conductance-peak in the tunneling experiments be used as a characteristic to predict the underlying topological nature of the proximity induced nanowire superconductivity? In particular, we define and calculate the topological visibility, which is a variation of the topological invariant associated with the scattering matrix of the system as well as the zero-bias-conductance-peak heights in the tunneling measurements, in the presence of dis…
We study theoretically the thermodynamic properties and spin dynamics of a class of magnetic rings closely related to ferric wheels, antiferromagnetic ring systems, in which one of the Fe (III) ions has been replaced by a dopant ion to create an excess spin. Using a coherent-state spin path integral formalism, we derive an effective action for the system in the presence of a magnetic field. We calculate the functional dependence of the magnetization and tunnel splitting on the magnetic field and show that the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian can be inferred from the magnetization curve. We s…
Quantitative understanding of the relationship between quantum tunneling and Fermi surface spin polarization is key to device design using topological insulator surface states. By using spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with p-polarized light in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films across the metal-to-insulator transition, we observe that for a given film thickness, the spin polarization is large for momenta far from the center of the surface Brillouin zone. In addition, the polarization decreases significantly with enhanced tunneling realized systematically in thin insulating films,…
Trivial Andreev bound states arising from chemical potential variations could lead to zero-bias tunneling conductance peaks at finite magnetic fields in class $D$ nanowires, precisely mimicking the predicted zero-bias conductance peaks arising from the topological Majorana bound states. This finding raises a serious question on the efficacy of using zero-bias tunneling conductance peaks, by themselves, as evidence supporting the existence of topological Majorana bound states in nanowires. In the current work, we provide specific experimental protocols for tunneling spectroscopy measure- ments …
We demonstrate that a quantum spin Hall current, spontaneously generated at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator, acts as a source of spin-pumping for a magnetic impurity with uniaxial anisotropy. One can then manipulate the impurity spin direction by means of an electrical current without using either magnetic electrodes or an external magnetic field. Furthermore we show that the unique properties of the quantum spin Hall topological state have profound effects on the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum of the impurity. For low current densities inelastic spin-flip events do …
Understanding the spin-texture behavior of boundary modes in ultrathin topological insulator films is critically essential for the design and fabrication of functional nano-devices. Here by using spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with p-polarized light in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films, we report tunneling-dependent evolution of spin configuration in topological insulator thin films across the metal-to-insulator transition. We observe strongly binding energy- and wavevector-dependent spin polarization for the topological surface electrons in the ultra-thin gapped-Dirac-cone lim…
We theoretically investigate tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) devices, which are probing the spin-momentum coupled nature of surface states of the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Theoretical calculations are performed based on a realistic tight-binding model for Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. We study both three dimensional devices, which exploit the surface states of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, as well as two-dimensional devices, which exploit the edge states of thin Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ strips. We demonstrate that the material properties of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ allow a TMR ratio at room temperat…
Thermodynamic measurements of magnetic fluxes and I-V characteristics in SQUIDs offer promising paths to the characterization of topological superconducting phases. We consider the problem of macroscopic quantum tunneling in an rf-SQUID in a topological superconducting phase. We show that the topological order shifts the tunneling rates and quantum levels, both in the parity conserving and fluctuating cases. The latter case is argued to actually enhance the signatures in the slowly fluctuating limit, which is expected to take place in the quantum regime of the circuit. In view of recent advanc…
We study tunneling of weakly-interacting spinless electrons at zero temperature through a single delta-barrier in one-dimensional wires and rings of finite lengths. Our numerical calculations are based on the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, nevertheless, our results exhibit features known from correlated many-body models. In particular, the transmission in a wire of length L at the Fermi level is proportional to $L^{-2α}$ with the universal power $α$ (depending on the electron-electron interaction only, not on the strength of the delta-barrier). Similarly, the persistent current in…
We study the effect of a strong electron-electron (e-e) interaction in a system of two concentric one-dimensional rings with incommensurate areas A_1 and A_2, coupled by a tunnel amplitude. For noninteracting particles the magnetic moment (persistent current) m of the many-body ground state and first excited states is an irregular function of the external magnetic field. In contrast, we show that when strong e-e interactions are present the magnetic field dependence of m becomes periodic. In such a strongly correlated system disorder can only be caused by inter-ring charge fluctuations, contro…
We numerically investigate the effect of Klein tunneling on the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in graphene rings using a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor couplings. In order to introduce Klein tunneling into the system, we apply an electrostatic potential to one of the arms of the ring, such that this arm together with the two adjacent leads form either a $nn'n$- or $npn$-junction ($n,n'$: conduction band transport, $p$: valence band transport). The former case corresponds to normal tunneling and the latter case to Klein tunneling. We find that the transmission properties strongly depend …
We propose a scheme to detect the Majorana-zero-mode-induced crossed Andreev reflection by measuring tunneling current directly. In this scheme a metallic ring structure is utilized to separate electron and hole signals. Since tunneling electrons and holes have different propagating wave vectors, the conditions for them to be constructively coherent in the ring differ. We find that when the magnetic flux threading the ring varies, it is possible to observe adjacent positive and negative current peaks of almost equal amplitudes.
The persistent current for a one-dimensional ring with two tunnel barriers is considered in the limit of weakly interacting electrons. In addition to a small off-resonance current, there are two kinds of resonant behavior; (i) a current independent of the barrier transparency (true resonance) and (ii) a current analogous to the one for a ring with only a single barrier (``semi''-resonance). For a given barrier transparency one or the other type of resonant behavior is realized depending on a geometric factor (ratio of interbarrier distance to ring circumference) and on the strength of the elec…
Tunneling between opposite surfaces of topological insulator thin film populated by electrons and holes is considered. We predict considerable enhancement of tunneling conductivity by Cooper electron-hole pair fluctuations that are precursor of their Cooper pairing. Cooper pair fluctuations lead to the critical behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of critical temperature with critical index ν=2. If the pairing is suppressed by disorder the behavior of tunneling conductivity in vicinity of quantum phase transition is also critical with the index μ=2. The effect can be interpreted as f…
We calculate tunneling conductance of normal metal and superconducting topological insulator CuxBi2Se3 junctions for the possible pairing symmetries. In the presence of gapless Andreev bound states (ABSs), the tunneling conductance shows a zero-bias peak even for the three-dimensional full-gap superconducting state. This zero-bias conductance peak stems from the enhancement of the surface density of states induced by the surface-state transition in momentum space.
Currently, much effort is being put into detecting unconventional p-wave superconductivity in Josephson junctions based on topological insulators (TIs). For that purpose we propose to use superconducting Klein tunneling, i.e. the reflectionless passage of Cooper pairs through a potential barrier in a gated ballistic junction. This phenomenon occurs due to the fact that the supercurrent is carried by helical Andreev bound states (ABSs) characterized by spin-momentum locking similar to the normal-state carriers. We derive the spectrum of the helical ABSs and the corresponding Josephson current f…
The quantum Hall state at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in bilayer systems realizes an exciton condensate and exhibits a zero-bias tunneling anomaly, similar to the Josephson effect in the presence of fluctuations. In contrast to conventional Josephson junctions, no Fraunhofer diffraction pattern has been observed, due to disorder induced topological defects, so-called merons. We consider interlayer tunneling in the presence of microwave radiation, and find Shapiro steps in the tunneling current-voltage characteristic despite the presence of merons. Moreover, the Josephson oscillations can also…
The surface termination of the promising topological insulator TlBiSe$_{2}$ has been studied by surface and bulk sensitive probes. Our scanning tunneling microscopy has unmasked for the first time the unusual surface morphology of TlBiSe$_{2}$ obtained by cleaving, where islands are formed by residual atoms on the cleaved plane. The chemical condition of these islands was identified using core-level spectroscopy. We observed thallium core-level spectra that are strongly deformed by a surface component in sharp contrast to the other elements. We propose a simple explanation for this behavior by…
We propose a new type of instanton interference effect in two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators. The intercorner tunneling consists of the instanton and the anti-instanton pairs that travel through the boundary of the higher-order topological insulator. The Berry phase difference between the instanton pairs causes the interference of the tunneling. This topological effect leads to the gate-tunable oscillation of the energy splitting between the corner states, where the oscillatory nodes signal the perfect suppression of the tunneling. We suggest this phenomenon as a unique featur…
We study the energy spectrum and the persistent current in an ideal one-dimensional mesoscopic ring coupled to an external fermionic reservoir. The contact between ring and reservoir is described by a tunneling operator, which causes an indirect coupling between different ring states via states in the reservoir. For strong coupling to the reservoir new quasistates with sharp eigenenergies develop inside the ring. The formation of long-living states at strong tunnel coupling to the reservoir is analogous to the Dicke effect in optics, that was recently investigated in context of resonant scatte…
Two dimensional InAs/GaAs quantum ring (QR) is considered using the effective potential approach. The symmetry of QR shape is violated as it is in the well-known Bohigas annular billiard. We calculate energy spectrum and studied the spatial localization of a single electron in such QR. For weak violation of the QR shape symmetry, the spectrum is presented as a set of quasi-doublets. Tunneling between quasi-doublet states is studied by the dependence on energy of the states. The dependence is changed with variation of the QR geometry that is related to the eccentricity of the QR. An interpretat…
We study manifestations of spin-charge separation (SCS) in transport through a tunnel-coupled interacting single-channel quantum ring. We focus on the high-temperature case (temperature $T$ larger than the level spacing $Δ$) and discuss both the classical (flux-independent) and interference contributions to the tunneling conductance of the ring in the presence of magnetic flux. We demonstrate that the SCS effects, which arise solely from the electron-electron interaction, lead to the appearance of a peculiar fine structure of the electron spectrum in the ring. Specifically, each level splits i…
We investigate the effect of a crystal edge dislocation on the metallic surface of a Topological Insulator. The edge dislocation gives rise to torsion which the electrons experience as a spin connection. As a result the electrons propagate along confined two dimensional regions and circular contours. Due to the edge dislocations the parity symmetry is violated resulting in a current measured by the in-plane component of the spin on the surface. The tunneling density of states for Burger vectors in the $y$ direction is maximal along the $x$ direction. The evidence of the enhanced tunneling dens…
We calculate the tunneling conductance σbetween the surface states on the opposite sides of the ultra-thin film of a topological insulator in a parallel magnetic field B_y. The parallel magnetic produces a relative shift of the in-plane momenta of the two surfaces states. An overlap between the shifted Fermi circles and their spin structure define an unusual dependence of the tunneling conductance σ(B_y) on the magnetic field. Because the spin of the electronic surface states in topological insulators is locked with momentum, the spin-polarization of the tunneling current can be controlled by …
The ``Which Path?'' interferometer consists of an Aharonov-Bohm ring with a quantum dot (QD) built in one of its arms, and an additional quantum point contact (QPC) located close to the QD. The transmission coefficient of the QPC depends on the charge state of the QD. Hence the point contact causes controllable dephasing of transport through the QD, and acts as a measurement device for which path an electron takes through the ring. We calculate the suppression of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations which is caused both by dephasing and by the orthogonality catastrophe, i.e., respectively, by real a…
Two recent experiments successfully observed Landau levels in the tunneling spectra of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. To mimic the influence of a scanning tunneling microscope tip on the Landau levels we solve the two-dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of a localized electrostatic potential. We find that the STM tip not only shifts the Landau levels, but also suppresses for a realistic choice of parameters the negative branch of Landau levels.
We study the quantum point contact between the topological superconductor and the helical Luttinger liquid. The effects of the electron-electron interactions in the helical Luttinger liquid on the low-energy physics of this system are analyzed by the renormalization group. Among the various couplings at the point contact which arise from the tunneling via the Majorana edge channel, the induced backscattering in the helical Luttinger liquid is the most relevant for repulsive interactions. Hence, at low temperatures, the helical Luttinger liquid is effectively cut into two separated half wires. …
Incorporating relativistic physics into quantum tunneling can lead to exotic behavior such as perfect transmission via Klein tunneling. Here, we probe the tunneling properties of spin-momentum locked relativistic fermions by designing and implementing a tunneling geometry that utilizes nanowires of the topological Kondo insulator candidate, SmB6. The nanowires are attached to the end of scanning tunneling microscope tips, and used to image the bicollinear stripe spin-order in the antiferromagnet Fe1.03Te with a Neel temperature of ~50 K. The antiferromagnetic stripes become invisible above 10 …
In this paper we present scanning tunneling microscopy of a large $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Se}_3$ crystal with superconducting PbBi islands deposited on the surface. Local density of states measurements are consistent with induced superconductivity in the topological surface state with a coherence length of order 540 nm. At energies above the gap the density of states exhibits oscillations due to scattering caused by a nonuniform order parameter. Strikingly, the spectra taken on islands also display similar oscillations along with traces of the Dirac cone, suggesting an inverse topological proxim…
We demonstrate theoretically that a strong high-frequency circularly polarized electromagnetic field can turn a two-dimensional periodic array of interconnected quantum rings into a topological insulator. The elaborated approach is applicable to calculate and analyze the electron energy spectrum of the array, the energy spectrum of the edge states and the corresponding electronic densities. As a result, the present theory paves the way to optical control of the topological phases in ring-based mesoscopic structures.
Tunneling Magnetoresistance between two ferrromagnets is an issue of fundamental importance in spintronics. In this work, we show that tunneling magnetoresistance can also emerge in junctions composed of ferromagnets and time-reversal invariant topological superconductors without spin-rotation symmetry. Here the physical origin is that when the spin-polarization direction of injected electron from the ferromagnet lying in the same plane of the spin-polarization direction of Majorana zero modes, the electron will undergo a perfect spin-equal Andreev reflection, while injected electrons with oth…
We consider electrostatically coupled quantum dots in topological insulators, otherwise confined and gapped by a magnetic texture. By numerically solving the (2+1) Dirac equation for the wave packet dynamics, we extract the energy spectrum of the coupled dots as a function of bias-controlled coupling and an external perpendicular magnetic field. We show that the tunneling energy can be controlled to a large extent by the electrostatic barrier potential. Particularly interesting is the coupling via Klein tunneling through a resonant valence state of the barrier. The effective three-level system…
