If $Γ$ is a finitely generated Fuchsian group such that its derived subgroup $Γ'$ is co-compact and torsion free, then $S={\mathbb H}^{2}/Γ'$ is a closed Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$ admitting the abelian group $A=Γ/Γ'$ as a group of conformal automorphisms. We say that $A$ is a homology group of $S$. A natural question is if $S$ admits unique homology groups or not, in other words, is there are different Fuchsian groups $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$ with $Γ_{1}'=Γ'_{2}$? It is known that if $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$ are both of the same signature $(0;k,\ldots,k)$, for some $k \geq 2$, then the equality $Γ_{1}'=Γ_{2}'$ ensures that $Γ_{1}=Γ_{2}$. Generalizing this, we observe that if $Γ_{j}$ has signature $(0;k_{j},\ldots,k_{j})$ and $Γ_{1}'=Γ'_{2}$, then $Γ_{1}=Γ_{2}$. We also provide examples of surfaces $S$ with different homology groups. A description of the normalizer in ${\rm Aut}(S)$ of each homology group $A$ is also obtained.
Given an l-component pointed oriented link (L,p) in an oriented three-manifold Y, one can construct its link Floer chain complex CFL(Y,L,p) over the polynomial ring F_2[U_1,...,U_l]. Moving the basepoint p_i in the link component L_i once around induces an automorphism of CFL(Y,L,p). In this paper, we study an automorphism (a possibly different one) of CFL(Y,L,p) defined explicitly in terms of holomorphic disks; for links in S^3, we show that these two automorphisms are the same.
Let $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$ be the group of automorphisms on the first homology group with $\mathbb Z_2$ coefficient of a closed non-orientable surface $N_g$ preserving the mod $2$ intersection form. In this paper, we obtain a finite presentation for $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$. As applications we calculate the first homology group and the second homology group of $\operatorname{Aut}(H_1(N_g;\mathbb Z_2),\cdot )$.
The main goal of this paper is a calculation of the integral (co)homology of the group of symmetric automorphisms of a free product. We proceed by giving a geometric interpretation of symmetric automorphisms via a moduli space of certain diagrams, which we name cactus products. To describe this moduli space a theory of diagonal complexes is introduced. This offers a generalisation of the theory of right-angled Artin groups in that each diagonal complex defines what we call a diagonal right-angled Artin group (DRAAG).
We prove that the quotient map from Aut(F_n) to Out(F_n) induces an isomorphism on homology in dimension i for n at least 2i+4. This corrects an earlier proof by the first author and significantly improves the stability range. In the course of the proof, we also prove homology stability for a sequence of groups which are natural analogs of mapping class groups of surfaces with punctures. In particular, this leads to a slight improvement on the known stability range for Aut(F_n), showing that its i-th homology is independent of n for n at least 2i+2.
We define an integer-valued invariant of special cube complexes called the genus, and prove that having genus one characterizes special cube complexes with abelian fundamental group. Using the genus, we obtain a new proof that the fundamental group of a special cube complex is either free abelian or surjects onto a non-cyclic free group. We also investigate automorphisms of special cube complexes, and give a new geometric proof that the Torelli subgroup for a right-angled Artin group is torsion-free.
A homology cylinder of a surface induces an automorphism of the completed group ring of the fundamental group of the surface. We introduce a new method of computing the automorphism by using the Goldman Lie algebra of the surface or some skein algebra. In particular, we give a refinement of a formula by Kuno and Massuyeau.
We study the word length entropy of automorphisms of residually nilpotent groups, and how the entropy of such group automorphisms relates to the entropy of induced automorphisms on various nilpotent quotients. We show that much like the structure of a nilpotent group is dictated to a large degree by its abelianization, the entropy of an automorphism of a nilpotent group is dictated by its entropy on the abelianization. We give some applications to the study of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces. In particular, we show that if $ψ$ is a non--homological pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a sur…
For n at least 3, let SAut(F_n) denote the unique subgroup of index two in the automorphism group of a free group. The standard linear action of SL(n,Z) on R^n induces non-trivial actions of SAut(F_n) on R^n and on S^{n-1}. We prove that SAut(F_n) admits no non-trivial actions by homeomorphisms on acyclic manifolds or spheres of smaller dimension. Indeed, SAut(F_n) cannot act non-trivially on any generalized Z_2-homology sphere of dimension less than n-1, nor on any Z_2-acyclic Z_2-homology manifold of dimension less than n. It follows that SL(n,Z) cannot act non-trivially on such spaces eithe…
We compute the rational stable homology of the automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. These groups interpolate between the general linear groups over the ring of integers and the automorphism groups of free groups, and we employ functor homology to reduce to the abelian case. As an application, we also compute the rational stable homology of the outer automorphism groups and of the mapping class groups of the associated aspherical nil-manifolds in the TOP, PL, and DIFF categories.
We give a Dehn-Nielsen type theorem for the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders by considering its action on the acyclic closure, which was defined by Levine, of a free group. Then we construct an additive invariant of those homology cylinders which act on the acyclic closure trivially. We also describe some tools to study the automorphism group of the acyclic closure of a free group generalizing those for the automorphism group of a free group or the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders.
The main goal of this note is to show that the study of closed hyperbolic surfaces with maximum length systole is in fact the study of surfaces with maximum length homological systole. The same result is shown to be true for once-punctured surfaces, and is shown to fail for surfaces with a large number of cusps.
In this article we give a survey of homology computations for moduli spaces $\mathfrak{M}_{g,1}^m$ of Riemann surfaces with genus $g\geqslant 0$, one boundary curve, and $m\geqslant 0$ punctures. While rationally and stably this question has a satisfying answer by the Madsen-Weiss theorem, the unstable homology remains notoriously complicated. We discuss calculations with integral, mod-2, and rational coefficients. Furthermore, we determine, in most cases, explicit generators using homology operations.
We give a combinatorial description of the Legendrian differential graded algebra associated to a Legendrian knot in PxR, where P is a punctured Riemann surface. As an application we show that for any integer k and any homology class h in H_1(PxR) there are k Legendrian knots all representing h which are pairwise smoothly isotopic through a formal Legendrian isotopy but which lie in mutually distinct Legendrian isotopy classes.
Recently there has been renewed interest in the mapping-class group of a compact surface of genus $g \ge 2$ and also in its finite order elements. A finite order element of the mapping-class group will be a conformal automorphisms on some Riemann surface of genus $g$. Here we give the details of the proof that there is an {\sl adapted basis} for any conformal automorphism of prime order on a surface of genus $g$ and extend the original result to apply to fixed point free automorphisms. An adapted basis is one that reflects the action of the automorphism in the optimal manner described below. T…
Using Kontsevich's identification of the homology of the Lie algebra l_infty with the cohomology of Out(F_r), Morita defined a sequence of 4k-dimensional classes mu_k in the unstable rational homology of Out(F_{2k+2}). He showed by a computer calculation that the first of these is non-trivial, so coincides with the unique non-trivial rational homology class for Out(F_4). Using the "forested graph complex" introduced in [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 3 (2003) 1167--1224], we reinterpret and generalize Morita's cycles, obtaining an unstable cycle for every connected odd-valent graph. (Morita has independ…
Let $Σ$ be a compact oriented surface. The Dehn twist along every simple closed curve $γ\subset Σ$ induces an automorphism of the fundamental group $π$ of $Σ$. There are two possible ways to generalize such automorphisms if the curve $γ$ is allowed to have self-intersections. One way is to consider the `generalized Dehn twist' along $γ$: an automorphism of the Malcev completion of $π$ whose definition involves intersection operations and only depends on the homotopy class $[γ]\in π$ of $γ$. Another way is to choose in the usual cylinder $U:=Σ\times [-1,+1]$ a knot $L$ projecting onto $γ$, to p…
Let V be a representation space of a finite group G. We determine the group structure of the first homology of the equivariant diffeomorphism group of V. Then we can apply it to the calculation of the first homology of the corresponding automorphism groups of smooth orbifolds, compact Hausdorff foliations, codimension one or two compact foliations and a locally free circle action on the 3-sphere.
We describe a relationship between the monopole Floer homology of three-manifolds and the geometry of Riemann surfaces. Consider an automorphism $φ$ of a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ with quotient $\mathbb{P}^1$. There is a natural correspondence between theta characteristics $L$ on $Σ$ which are invariant under $φ$ and self-conjugate spin$^c$ structures $\mathfrak{s}_L$ on the mapping torus $M_φ$ of $φ$. We show that the monopole Floer homology groups of $(M_φ,\mathfrak{s}_L)$ are explicitly determined by the eigenvalues of the (lift of the) action of $φ$ on $H^0(L)$, the space of holomorphic …
The homology cobordism group of homology cylinders is a generalization of both the mapping class group of surfaces and the string link concordance group. We consider extensions of Johnson homomorphisms of a mapping class group, Milnor invariants and Orr invariants of links to homology cylinders, all of which are related to free nilpotent groups. We establish a combined filtration via kernels of extended Johnson homomorphisms and extended Milnor invariants. We determine its image under the three invariants, and investigate relations among the invariants, and relations of the filtration to autom…
We study the general properties of the moduli spaces of SO(3) vortices over orbifold Riemann surfaces and use these to characterize the solutions of the SO(3) monopole equations on Seifert manifolds following in the footsteps of Mrowka, Ozsváth and Yu. We also study the solutions to the SO(3) monopole equations on S1 x (Riemann Surface) in order to motivate the construction of a version of monopole Floer homology, which we call framed monopole Floer homology, in analogy with the construction given by Kronheimer and Mrowka for the case of instanton Floer homology. Finally, the SO(3) vortex modu…
It is well known that the collection of uniformizations of a closed Riemann surface $S$ is partially ordered; the lowest ones are the Schottky unformizations, that is, tuples $(Ω,Γ,P:Ω\to S)$, where $Γ$ is a Schottky group with region of discontinuity $Ω$ and $P:Ω\to S$ is a regular holomorphic cover map with $Γ$ as its deck group. Let $τ:S \to S$ be a conformal (respectively, anticonformal) automorphism of $S$ of finite order $n$, and let $(Ω,Γ,P:Ω\to S)$ be a Schottky uniformization of $S$. Assume that $τ$ lifts with respect to the previous Schottky uniformization, that is, there exists a Mö…
Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a connected compact surface $Σ$, and $M$ be an integer homology 3-sphere. We show that if each element of $G$ is extendable over $M$ with respect to a fixed embedding $Σ\rightarrow M$, then $G$ is extendable over some $M'$ which is 1-dominated by $M$. From this result, in the orientable category we classify all periodic automorphisms of closed surfaces that are extendable over the 3-sphere. The corresponding embedded surface of such an automorphism can always be a Heegaard surface.
We investigate the action of the automorphism group of a closed Riemann surface on its set of theta characteristics (or spin structures). We give criteria for when an automorphism fixes all spin structures, or when it fixes just one. The case of hyperelliptic curves and of the Klein quartic are discussed in detail.
We prove a formula for the conjugation action on the knot Floer complex of the connected sum of two knots. Using the formula we construct a homomorphism from the smooth concordance group to an abelian group consisting of chain complexes with homotopy automorphisms, modulo an equivalence relation. Using our connected sum formula, we perform some example computations of Hendricks and Manolescu's involutive invariants on large surgeries of connected sums of knots.
In combinatorial topology we aim to triangulate manifolds such that their topological properties are reflected in the combinatorial structure of their description. Here, we give a combinatorial criterion on when exactly triangulations of 3-manifolds with transitive cyclic symmetry can be generalised to an infinite family of such triangulations with similarly strong combinatorial properties. In particular, we construct triangulations of Seifert fibred spaces with transitive cyclic symmetry where the symmetry preserves the fibres and acts non-trivially on the homology of the spaces. The triangul…
We study the nilpotent part $N'$ of a pseudo-periodic automorphism $h$ of a real oriented surface with boundary $Σ$. We associate a quadratic form $Q$ defined on the first homology group (relative to the boundary) of the surface $Σ$. Using the twist formula and techniques from mapping class group theory, we prove that the form $\tilde{Q}$ obtained after killing ${\ker N}$ is positive definite if all the screw numbers associated with certain orbits of annuli are positive. We also prove that the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute homology group of $Σ$ is even whenever the quotient of the …
The homology groups of the automorphism group of a free group are known to stabilize as the number of generators of the free group goes to infinity, and this paper relativizes this result to a family of groups that can be defined in terms of homotopy equivalences of a graph fixing a subgraph. This is needed for the second author's recent work on the relationship between the infinite loop structures on the classifying spaces of mapping class groups of surfaces and automorphism groups of free groups, after stabilization and plus-construction. We show more generally that the homology groups of ma…
A closed Riemann surface $S$ (of genus at least one) is called an origami curve if it admits a non-constant holomorphic map $β:S \to E$ with at most one branch value, where $E$ is a genus one Riemann surface. In this case, $(S,β)$ is called an origami pair and ${\rm Aut}(S,β)$ is the group of conformal automorphisms $ϕ$ of $S$ such that $β=β\circ ϕ$. Let $G$ be a finite group. It is a known fact that $G$ can be realized as a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(S,β)$ for a suitable origami pair $(S,β)$. It is also known that $G$ can be realized as a group of conformal automorphisms of a Riemann surface $X$ …
This is a survey of Magnus representations with particular emphasis on their applications to mapping class groups and monoids (groups) of homology cobordisms of surfaces. In the first half, we begin by recalling the basics of the Fox calculus and overview Magnus representations for automorphism groups of free groups and mapping class groups of surfaces with related topics. In the latter half, we discuss in detail how the theory in the first half extends to homology cobordisms of surfaces and present a number of applications from recent researches.
We prove a representation stability result for the second homology groups of Torelli subgroups of mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups. This strengthens the results of Boldsen-Hauge Dollerup and Day-Putman. We also prove a new representation stability result for the homology of certain congruence subgroups, partially improving upon the work of Putman-Sam. These results follow from a general theorem on syzygies of certain modules with finite polynomial degree.
We prove that in dimensions not equal to 4, 5, or 7, the homology and homotopy groups of the classifying space of the topological group of diffeomorphisms of a disk fixing the boundary are finitely generated in each degree. The proof uses homological stability, embedding calculus and the arithmeticity of mapping class groups. From this we deduce similar results for the homeomorphisms of $R^n$ and various types of automorphisms of 2-connected manifolds.
In his study of the group of homology cylinders, J. Levine made the conjecture that a certain homomorphism eta': T -> D' is an isomorphism. Here T is an abelian group on labeled oriented trees, and D' is the kernel of a bracketing map on a quasi-Lie algebra. Both T and D' have strong connections to a variety of topological settings, including the mapping class group, homology cylinders, finite type invariants, Whitney tower intersection theory, and the homology of the group of automorphisms of the free group. In this paper, we confirm Levine's conjecture. This is a central step in classifying …
The automorphisms of free groups with boundaries form a family of groups A_{n,k} closely related to mapping class groups, with the standard automorphisms of free groups as A_{n,0} and (essentially) the symmetric automorphisms of free groups as A_{0,k}. We construct a contractible space L_{n,k} on which A_{n,k} acts with finite stabilizers and finite quotient space and deduce a range for the virtual cohomological dimension of A_{n,k}. We also give a presentation of the groups and calculate their first homology group.
Let S be a compact Riemann surfaces of genus g >= 2 and G a conformal automoprhism group of order n acting on S. In this paper we give the definition of an adapted generating set and an adapted basis for the first homology group of such a compact Riemann surface. This generating set and basis reflect the action of G in as simple manner as possible. This can be seen in the matrix of the action of G which we obtain. We prove the existence of such a generating set and basis for any conformal group acting on such a surface and find the matrix. This extends our earlier results on adapted bases and …
We compute the groups $H^*(\mathrm{Aut}(F_n); M)$ and $H^*(\mathrm{Out}(F_n); M)$ in a stable range, where $M$ is obtained by applying a Schur functor to $H_\mathbb{Q}$ or $H^*_\mathbb{Q}$, respectively the first rational homology and cohomology of $F_n$. For reasons which are not conceptually clear, taking coefficients in $H_\mathbb{Q}$ and its related modules behaves in a far less trivial way than taking coefficients in $H^*_\mathbb{Q}$ and its related modules. The answer may be described in terms of stable multiplicities of irreducibles in the plethysm $\mathrm{Sym}^k \circ \mathrm{Sym}^l$ …
A homology cylinder over a compact manifold is a homology cobordism between two copies of the manifold together with a boundary parametrization. We study abelian quotients of the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders. For homology cylinders over general surfaces, it was shown by Cha, Friedl and Kim that their homology cobordism groups have infinitely generated abelian quotient groups by using Reidemeister torsion invariants. In this paper, we first investigate their abelian quotients again by using another invariant called the Magnus representation. After that, we apply the machinery …
Given a non-compact Riemannian manifold M and a submanifold N of codimension q, we will construct under certain assumptions on both M and N a wrong way map in uniformly finite homology. Using an equivariant version of the construction and applying it to universal covers, we will construct wrong way maps in homology of groups. As applications we discuss obstructions against positive scalar curvature metrics and against inessentialness.
By analyzing how the Borel regulator classes vanish on various groups related to $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathrm{Z})$, we define three series of secondary characteristic classes for subgroups of automorphism groups of free groups. The first case is the $\mathrm{IA}$-automorphism groups and we show that our classes coincide with higher $\mathrm{FR}$ torsions due to Igusa. The second case is the mapping class groups and our classes also turn out to be his higher torsions which are non-zero multiples of the Mumford-Morita-Miller classes of even indices. Our construction gives new group cocycles for these …
