By duality approach, we study condensate mass of QCD vacuum via dilaton wall background in presence of parameter $c$ which represents the gluon condensation in holographic set up. First from Wilson line calculation we find $m^2_0$ (condensate parameter in mixed nonlocal condensation) whose behavior mimics that of QCD. The value of $m^2_0$ that we find by this approach, is in agreement with QCD data. In the second step we consider produced mass m via Schwinger effect mechanism in presence of parameter $c$. We show that generally gluon condensation contribute mass dominantly and produced mass via Schwinger effect is suppressed by $m_0$ .
We extend Douglas' solution of the problem of finding minimal surfaces to anti-de Sitter space. The case of a circle as a boundary contour is elaborated. We discuss applications to ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills: a circular Wilson loop and the Schwinger process, where we calculate the $1/\sqrtλ$ correction to the critical value of constant electric field.
We establish a novel method of obtaining the gauge-invariant bilocal condensate of gluon fields from the solutions of the Dyson--Schwinger equations (DSE) which works in the infrared and ultraviolet limits. We present explicit results for SU(3) case in four dimensions, and compare to other related analytical and lattice results.
We study the 2-flavor lattice Schwinger model with Wilson fermions in the chiral limit. The quark mass is determined using the PCAC definition. We numerically compute the masses of the iso-triplet (pi) and iso-singlet particles (eta) for different quark masses and compare our results with analytical formulas.
The aim of this work is to study the holographic dual to the gauge theory with a nonzero gluon condensate. We check for consistency the holographic way of describing the condensate and calculate the expectation value of a small Wilson loop in the presence of the gluon condensate, thus obtaining the relevant coefficient in the operator product expansion of the small loop in different holographic models. We also study the effect of the condensate on the Gross-Ooguri phase transition in the correlator of two circular Wilson loops in parallel and concentric configurations. In the numerical study o…
The axial anomaly and fermion condensate in the light cone Schwinger model are studied following path integral methods. This formalism allows for a simple and direct calculation for these and other vacuum dependent phenomena.
We present general formulae to compute Wilson line correlators with the Color Glass Condensate described by the McLerran-Venugopalan model. We explicitly construct a complete and non-orthogonal set of color-singlet bases and write matrix elements down, so that the exponential of the matrix leads to the Wilson line correlators. We further develop a systematic perturbative expansion of dipole Wilson line correlators in terms of $1/N_c$ where $N_c$ is the color number. As a phenomenological application we calculate the flow harmonics $v_n\{m\}$ in the dipole model and discuss the $N_c$ scaling.
Within mass perturbation theory, already the first order contribution to the chiral condensate of the massive Schwinger model is UV divergent. We discuss the problem of choosing a proper normalization and, by making use of some bosonization results, we are able to choose a normalization so that the resulting chiral condensate may be compared, e.g., with lattice data.
We present a relation which connects the propagator in the radial (Fock-Schwinger) gauge with a gauge invariant Wilson loop. It is closely related to the well-known field strength formula and can be used to calculate the radial gauge propagator. The result is shown to diverge in four-dimensional space even for free fields, its singular nature is however naturally explained using the renormalization properties of Wilson loops with cusps and self-intersections. Using this observation we provide a consistent regularization scheme to facilitate loop calculations. Finally we compare our results wit…
We derive an infinite sequence of Schwinger-Dyson equations for $N=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The fundamental and the only variable employed is the Wilson-loop geometrically represented in $N=1$ superspace: it organizes an infinite number of supersymmetrizing insertions into the ordinary Wilson-loop as a single entity. In the large $N_{c}$ limit, our equation becomes a closed loop equation for the one-point function of the Wilson-loop average.
Within the Schwinger-Keldysh representation of many-body QCD, it is shown that the leading quantum corrections to the strong classical color field is classical in the sense that the fluctuation field still obeys the classical Jacobi-field equation, while the quantum effects solely resides in the fluctuations of the initial field configurations. Within this context, a systematic derivation of the JIMWLK renormalization group equation is presented. A clear identification of the correct form of gauge transformation rules and the correct form of the matter-field Lagrangian in the Schwinger-Keldysh…
We elucidate chirality production under parity breaking constant electromagnetic fields, with which we clarify qualitative differences in and out of equilibrium. For a strong magnetic field the pair production from the Schwinger mechanism increments the chirality. The pair production rate is exponentially suppressed with mass according to the Schwinger formula, while the mass dependence of chirality production in the axial Ward identity appears in the pesudo-scalar term. We demonstrate that in equilibrium field theory calculus the axial anomaly is canceled by the pseudo-scalar condensate for a…
Using techniques from hopping expansion we identically map the lattice Schwinger model with Wilson fermions to a model of oriented loops on the lattice. This is done by first computing the explicit form of the fermion determinant in the external field. Subsequent integration of the gauge fields renders a sum over all loop configurations with simple Gaussian weights depending on the number of plaquettes enclosed by the loops. In our new representation vacuum expectation values of local fermionic operators (scalars, vectors) can be computed by simply counting the loop flow through the sites (lin…
We perform the potential analysis in holographic Schwinger effect in a deformed anti-de Sitter (AdS) background with backreaction due to the gluon condensate. We determine the potential by analyzing the classical string action attaching on a probe D3-brane sitting at an intermediate position in the bulk AdS space. It is found that the inclusion of the gluon condensate reduces the production rate, reverse to the effect of the temperature. Also, we evaluate the critical electric field by Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action.
The critical dynamics of the chiral symmetry breaking induced by gauge interaction is examined in the Wilson renormalization group framework in comparison with the Schwinger-Dyson approach. We derive the beta functions for the four-fermi couplings in the sharp cutoff renormalzation group scheme, from which the critical couplings and the anomalous dimensions of the fermion composite operators near criticality are immediately obtained. It is also shown that the beta functions lead to the same critical behavior found by solving the so-called ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, if we restrict the rad…
We investigate various aspects of a proposal by Aharony and Kutasov arXiv:0803.3547 [hep-th] for the gravity dual of an open Wilson line in the Sakai-Sugimoto model or its non-compact version. In particular, we use their proposal to determine the effect of finite temperature, as well as background electric and magnetic fields, on the chiral symmetry breaking order parameter. We also generalize their prescription to more complicated worldsheets and identify the operators dual to such worldsheets.
We introduce dressed Wilson loops as a novel confinement observable. It consists of closed planar loops of arbitrary geometry but fixed area, and its expectation values decay with the latter. The construction of dressed Wilson loops is based on chiral condensates in response to magnetic and electric fields, thus linking different physical concepts. We present results for generalized condensates and dressed Wilson loops on dynamical lattice configurations and confirm the agreement with conventional Wilson loops in the limit of large probe mass. We comment on the renormalization of dressed Wilso…
In this paper a method previously employed by Salmhofer to establish an exact equivalence of the one-flavour strong coupling lattice Schwinger model with Wilson fermions to some 8-vertex model is applied to the case with two flavours. As this method is fairly general and can be applied to strong coupling QED and purely fermionic models with any (sufficiently small) number of Wilson fermions in any dimension the purpose of the present study is mainly a methodical one in order to gain some further experience with it. In the paper the vertex model equivalent to the two-flavour strong coupling lat…
The minimization of the Nambu-Goto action for a surface whose contour defines a circular Wilson loop of radius a placed at a finite value of the coordinate orthogonal to the boundary is considered. This is done for asymptotically AdS spaces. The condensates of even dimension $n=2$ through $10$ are calculated in terms of the coefficient of $a^{n}$ in the expansion of the on-shell subtracted Nambu-Goto action for small $a$ The subtraction employed is such that it presents no conflict with conformal invariance in the AdS case and need not introduce an additional infrared scale for the case of con…

The construction of dressed Wilson loops is based on chiral condensates in response to magnetic (and electric) fields, thus linking different physical concepts. We test gauge/string duality by evaluating expectation values of small Wilson loops in pure Yang-Mills theories. On the gauge-theory side, there exists rich phenomenology. The dual formulation provides with a universal language to evaluate the gluon condensate and quadratic correction in terms of the metric in the fifth coordinate. Quantitatively, the estimated value of the gluon condensate is approximately 0.010 GeV^4.
We put forth a Fierzed hopping expansion for strong coupling Wilson fermions. As an application, we show that the strong coupling Schwinger model on parallelogram lattices with nonbacktracking Wilson fermions span, as a function of the lattice skewness angle, the $Δ= -1$ critical line of $6$-vertex models. This Fierzed formulation also applies to backtracking Wilson fermions, which as we describe apparently correspond to richer systems. However, we have not been able to identify them with exactly solved models.
The light-front (LF) quantization of the bosonized Schwinger model is discussed in the "continuum formulation". The proposal, successfully used earlier for describing the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) on the LF, of separating first the scalar field into the dynamical condensate and the fluctuation fields before employing the "standard" Dirac method works here as well. The condensate variable, however, is now shown to be a q-number operator in contrast to the case of SSB where it was shown to be a c-number or a background field. The "condensate or Theta-vacua" emerge straightforwardly tog…
The Schwinger model, defined in the space interval $-L \le x \le L$, with (anti)periodic boundary conditions, is canonically quantized in the light-cone gauge $A_-=0$ by means of equal-time (anti)commutation relations. The transformation diagonalizing the complete Hamiltonian is explicitly constructed, thereby giving spectrum, chiral anomaly and condensate. The structures of Hilbert spaces related both to free and to interacting Hamiltonians are completely exhibited. Besides the usual massive field, two chiral massless fields are present, which can be consistently expunged from the physical sp…
We study our Schwinger-Dyson equation as well as the large $N_{c}$ loop equation for supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions by the N=1 superspace Wilson-loop variable. We are successful in deriving a new manifestly supersymmetric form in which a loop splitting and joining are represented by a manifestly supersymmetric as well as supergauge invariant operation in superspace. This is found to be a natural extension from the abelian case. We solve the equation to leading order in perturbation theory or equivalently in the linearized approximation, obtaining a desirable nontrivial ans…
In the framework of the operator product expansion I provide a detailed evaluation of the contribution of the lowest photon condensate to the two-point photon Green function for four-dimensional spinor electrodynamics and three-dimensional scalar electrodynamics. Since the above mentioned condensate affects the part of the propagator contributing to physical amplitudes I suggest that this condensate could play a role in the non-perturbative dynamics of Abelian gauge field theories.
We discuss the gauge symmetry breaking of six dimensional theories in flux compactification with a magnetic flux background and a constant vacuum expectation value (VEV) for the scalar fields, which are zero modes of extra spatial components of the gauge field. Although the effective potential for the scalar fields are known not to be generated classically and radiatively in a magnetic flux background only, the one-loop effective potential is shown to be generated by the effects of the non-zero constant VEV. As illustrations, we calculate the one-loop effective potential in SU(2) and SU(3) Yan…
Some time ago Salmhofer demonstrated the equivalence of the strong coupling lattice Schwinger model with Wilson fermions to a certain 8-vertex model which can be understood as a self-avoiding loop model on the square lattice with bending rigidity $η= 1/2$ and monomer weight $z = (2κ)^{-2}$. The present paper applies two approximate analytical methods to the investigation of critical properties of the self-avoiding loop model with variable bending rigidity, discusses their validity and makes comparison with known MC results. One method is based on the independent loop approximation used in the …
We study the instability, for the supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories, caused by the external electric field through the imaginary part of the action of the D7 probe brane, which is embedded in the background of type IIB theory. This instability is related to the Schwinger effect, namely to the quark pair production due to the external electric field, for the $SU(N_c)$ SYM theories. In this holographic approach, it is possible to calculate the Schwinger effect for various phases of the theories. Here we give the calculation for ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theory and the analysis is extended to the f…
The Schwinger model is used to study the artifacts of quenching in a controlled way. The model is solved on a finite-temperature cylinder of circumference $β=1/T$ with bag-inspired local boundary conditions at the two ends $x^1=0$ and $x^1=L$ which break the $γ_5$-invariance and thus play the role of a small quark mass. The quenched chiral condensate is found to diverge exponentially as $L\to\infty$, and to diverge (rather than melt as for $N_{\rm f}\geq1$) if the high-temperature limit $β\to0$ is taken at finite box-length $L$. We comment on the generalization of our results to the massive qu…
Parity and flavor symmetry is not broken in QCD. Using this fact, we propose a new method to measure the chiral condensate in lattice QCD using Wilson fermions with an operator that breaks parity and flavor in addition to the chiral symmetry.
Casher and Susskind have noted that in the light-front description, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is a property of hadronic wavefunctions and not of the vacuum. Here we show from several physical perspectives that, because of color confinement, quark and gluon QCD condensates are associated with the internal dynamics of hadrons. We discuss condensates using condensed matter analogues, the AdS/CFT correspondence, and the Bethe-Salpeter/Dyson-Schwinger approach for bound states. Our analysis is in agreement with the Casher and Susskind model and the explici…
The formalism for Schwinger-Dyson equations of Wilson loops, as developed by Eguchi, Weingarten, and Foerster, is extended to include connected correlators. These should allow one to study propagators and interactions of glueball fields without having to handle gauge dependent fields such as gluons an ghosts. Some steps towards a solution are made.
The angular momentum of fermion pairs generated by the Schwinger effect is studied in homogeneous (chromo)electromagnetic fields, mimicking the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It is demonstrated that the angular momentum density of produced pairs is proportional to that of the background fields. This is argued both heuristically in a virtual breaking condensate model by evaluating Wong's equations, and out-of-equilibrium to one-loop using the in-in formalism.
In this work we demonstrate that non-zero neutrino masses can be generated from gravitational interactions. We solve the Schwinger-Dyson equations to find a non-trivial vacuum thereby determining the scale of the neutrino condensate and the number of new particle degrees of freedom required for gravitationally induced dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We show for minimal beyond the Standard Model particle content, the scale of the condensation occurs close to the Planck scale.
We evaluate the chiral condensate and Polyakov loop in two-dimensional QED with a fermion of an arbitrary mass ($m$). We find discontinuous $m$ dependence in the chiral condensate and anomalous temperature dependence in Polyakov loops when the vacuum angle $θ$$\sim$$π$ and $m$=O($e$). These nonperturbative phenomena are due to the bifurcation process in the solutions to the vacuum eigenvalue equation.
We use AdS/QCD to analyze the quark and gluon scalar and pseudo-scalar condensates around static color sources described by a circular Wilson loop. We also derive the static dipole-dipole interactions between rectangular Wilson loops in AdS/QCD and discuss their relevance for static string interactions in QCD at strong coupling.
Within the framework of Euclidean path integral and mass perturbation theory we compute the Wilson loop of widely separated external charges for the massive Schwinger model. From this result we show for arbitrary order mass perturbation theory that integer external charges are completely screened, whereas for noninteger charges a constant long-range force remains.
We discuss the confining features of the Schwinger model on the Poincare half plane. We show that despite the fact that the expectation value of the large Wilson loop of massless Schwinger model displays the perimeter behavior, the system can be in confining phase due to the singularity of the metric at horizontal axis. It is also shown that in the quenched Schwinger model, the area dependence of the Wilson loop, in contrast to the flat case, is a not a sign of confinement and the model has a finite energy even for large external charges separation. The presence of dynamical fermions can not m…
We investigate Schwinger-Dyson equations for correlators of Wilson line operators in non-commutative gauge theories. We point out that, unlike what happens for closed Wilson loops, the joining term survives in the planar equations. This fact may be used to relate the correlator of an arbitrary number of Wilson lines eventually to a set of {\it closed} Wilson loops, obtained by joining the individual Wilson lines together by a series of well-defined cutting and joining manipulations. For closed loops, we find that the non-planar contributions do not have a smooth limit in the limit of vanishing…
We derive recently obtained relations, relating the logarithmic gauge coupling derivative of the hadron mass and the cosmological constant to the matter and vacuum gluon condensates, within a Hamiltonian framework. The key idea is a canonical transformation which brings the relevant part of the Hamiltonian into a suitable form. Furthermore we illustrate the relations within the Schwinger model and ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang Mills theory (Seiberg-Witten theory).
It has been believed since the paper by Fischler, Kogut and Susskind (FKS) that in QED_2 at finite charge density the chiral condensate exhibits a spatially inhomogeneous, oscillating behaviour. In this paper we demonstrate that this inhomogeneity is due to unphysical explicit breaking of the translational invariance by a uniform background charge density. Moreover, we investigate in the context of a simple statistical model what happens if the neutralizing background is composed instead of heavy, but dynamical, particles. We find that in contrast to the standard picture of FKS, the chiral con…
We propose and discuss a new approach to the analysis of the correlation functions which contain light-like Wilson lines or loops, the latter being cusped in addition. The objects of interest are therefore the light-like Wilson null-polygons, the soft factors of the parton distribution and fragmentation functions, high-energy scattering amplitudes in the eikonal approximation, gravitational Wilson lines, etc. Our method is based on a generalization of the universal quantum dynamical principle by J. Schwinger and allows one to take care of extra singularities emerging due to light-like or semi-…

We consider the effect of a non-zero lattice spacing on the low-energy effective theory of Wilson fermions with one flavor. Analytical results are given for both the chiral condensate and the microscopic spectral density of the Wilson Dirac operator. A subtle mechanism ensures that a constant chiral condensate is recovered, once the sum over sectors of fixed index is performed.
We study the Schwinger model on a half-line in this paper. In particular, we investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate near the edge of the line. The effect of the chosen boundary condition is emphasized. The extension to the finite temperature case is straightforward in our approach.
We discuss within the weak-field approximation and the derivative expansion how the area law of the Wilson loop follows directly from the vacuum condensate of mass dimension 2, i.e., simultaneous Bose-Einstein condensation of gluon pair and ghost-antighost pair. Such a novel vacuum condensate was recently claimed to exist as the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of a BRST-invariant composite operator of mass dimension 2. First of all, we use a version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem to rewrite the Wilson loop line integral to a surface integral. Then we convert the Yang-Mills theory wit…
The massive N-flavor Schwinger model is analyzed by the bosonization method. The problem is reduced to the quantum mechanics of N degrees of freedom in which the potential needs to be self-consistently determined by its ground-state wave function and spectrum with given values of the $θ$ parameter, fermion masses, and temperature. Boson masses and fermion chiral condensates are evaluated. In the N=1 model the anomalous behavior is found at $θ\sim π$ and $m/μ\sim 0.4$. In the N=3 model an asymmetry in fermion masses $(m_1 < m_2 \ll m_3)$ removes the singularity at $θ=π$ and T=0. The chiral cond…
We perform the potential analysis for the holographic Schwinger effect in a deformed $AdS_5$ model with conformal invariance broken by a background dilaton. We evaluate the static potential by analyzing the classical action of a string attaching the rectangular Wilson loop on a probe D3 brane sitting at an intermediate position in the bulk AdS space. We observe that the inclusion of chemical potential tends to enhance the production rate, reverse to the effect of confining scale. Also, we calculate the critical electric field by Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action.
We consider a generalization of the holographic Schwinger effect proposed by Semenoff and Zarembo to the case with constant electric and magnetic fields. There are two ways to turn on magnetic fields, i) the probe D3-brane picture and ii) the string world-sheet picture. In the former picture, magnetic fields both perpendicular and parallel to the electric field are activated by a Lorentz transformation and a spatial rotation. In the latter one, the classical solutions of the string world-sheet corresponding to circular Wilson loops are generalized to contain two additional parameters encoding …
We show how it is possible to give a precise and unambiguous implementation of the Witten--Veneziano formula for the eta' mass on the lattice, which looks like the formal continuum one, if the expression of the topological charge density operator, suggested by fermions obeying the Ginsparg--Wilson relation, is employed. By using recent numerical results from simulations with overlap fermions in 2 (abelian Schwinger model) and 4 (QCD) dimensions, one obtains values for the mass of the lightest pseudo-scalar flavour-singlet state that agree within errors with theoretical expectations and experim…
A Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark propagator is derived in the context of a Bethe-Salpeter second order formalism developped in preceding papers and of the Minimal Area Law model for the evaluation of the Wilson loop. We discuss how the equal time straight line approximation has to be modified to include correctly trajectories going backwards in time. We also show, by an appropriate selection of the solution of the SD equation, that in the limit of zero quark mass chiral symmetry breaking and a zero mass pseudoscalar meson actually occur. The inclusion of backward quark trajectories pro…
We study the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFT) in momentum space for the dynamically generated mass function in QED3. Starting from the Landau gauge results in the rainbow approximation, we construct solutions in other covariant gauges. We confirm that the chiral condensate is gauge invariant as the structure of the LKFT predicts. We also check that the gauge dependence of the constituent fermion mass is considerably reduced as compared to the one obtained directly by solving SDE.
Tensor network (TN) methods, in particular the Matrix Product States (MPS) ansatz, have proven to be a useful tool in analyzing the properties of lattice gauge theories. They allow for a very good precision, much better than standard Monte Carlo (MC) techniques for the models that have been studied so far, due to the possibility of reaching much smaller lattice spacings. The real reason for the interest in the TN approach, however, is its ability, shown so far in several condensed matter models, to deal with theories which exhibit the notorious sign problem in MC simulations. This makes it pro…
We investigate quantum chromodynamics with two colors at nonvanishing density using Dyson-Schwinger equations. Lattice methods do not have a complex action problem in this theory. Thus, we can benchmark our results and the effect of truncations directly by comparing with the corresponding lattice results. We do so for the gluon propagator, the chiral condensate, and the quark number density and test variations of the employed truncation to improve the agreement. Finally, we compare the effect of a truncation on the chiral and confinement/deconfinement transitions in the phase diagrams of QCD a…
The decay of the vacuum due to the presence of an electric field is expected to be delayed by a confining force. We demonstrate that this feature is captured by our model [arXiv:1404.0011 [hep-ph],arXiv:1312.5718 [hep-ph]] for hadrons based on the worldline formalism. Our model, while based entirely in four-dimensional quantum field theory, shares many features with holographic approaches: it appears intrinsically quantum mechanical; as an auxiliary fifth dimension Schwinger's proper time combines with the physical four spacetime dimensions into an AdS$_5$ geometry; conformal-symmetry breaking…
The temperature dependence of the order parameter of the Schwinger model is calculated in the euclidean functional integral approach. For that we solve the model on a finite torus and let the spatial extension tend to infinity at the end of the computations. The induced actions, fermionic zero-modes, relevant Green functions and Wilson loop correlators on the torus are derived. We find the analytic form of the chiral condensate for any temperature and in particular show that it behaves like \< \barΨΨ\> \sim -2 T\exp(-π\sqrtπT/e) for temperatures large compared to the induced photon mass.
The classical and quantum aspects of the Schwinger model on the torus are considered. First we find explicitly all zero modes of the Dirac operator in the topological sectors with nontrivial Chern index and is spectrum. In the second part we determine the regularized effective action and discuss the propagators related to it. Finally we calculate the gauge invariant averages of the fermion bilinears and correlation functions of currents and densities. We show that in the infinite volume limit the well-known result for the chiral condensate can be obtained and the clustering property can be est…
