Spectrometers based on the magnetic adiabatic collimation followed by an electrostatic filter (MAC-E-filter) principle combine high angular acceptance with an excellent energy resolution. These features make MAC-E-filters very valuable for experiments where the kinetic energy of ions or electrons from rare processes has to be measured with utmost sensitivity and precision. Examples are direct neutrino mass experiments like KATRIN which investigate the energy of electrons in the endpoint region of the tritium $β$-spectrum. However, the MAC-E-filter is a very sharp energy high-pass filter but not a differential spectrometer. To determine a spectral shape of a charged particle source, different electric retarding potentials have to be used sequentially, reducing the statistics.
In a previous work we have shown that the advantages of the standard MAC-E-filter can be combined with a measurement of the time-of-flight (TOF), allowing to determine spectral information over a certain energy range with one retarding potential only, with the corresponding gain in statistics. This TOF method requires to know the start time of the charged particles, which is not always possible. Therefore, we propose a new method which does not require the determination of the start time and which we call "time-focusing Time-of-Flight" (tfTOF): By applying a time dependent acceleration and deceleration potential at a subsequent MAC-E-filter, an energy dependent post-bunching of the charged particles is achieved.
We present a finite element calculation of the magnetic field (MagNet software) taken with the newly proposed PASTIS Coil, which uses a wide-angle banana shaped 3He Neuton Spin Filter cell (NSF) to cover a large range of scattering angle. The goal of this insert is to enable XYZ polarization analysis to be installed on the future thermal time-of flight spectrometer TOPAS.
We describe a new time-of-flight Fourier spectrometer for investigation of UCN diffraction by a moving grating. The device operates in the regime of a discrete set of modulation frequencies. The results of the first experiments show that the spectrometer may be used for obtaining UCN energy spectra in the energy range of 60$÷$200 neV with a resolution of about 5 neV. The accuracy of determination of the line position was estimated to be several units of $10^{-10}$ eV
A Neutron Time-Of-Flight (NTOF) spectrometer based on Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) is developed for studies of neutron production of proton induced spallation reactions related to the ADS project. After the presentation of comparisons between calculated spallation neutron production double-differential cross sections and the available experimental one, a detailed description of NTOF spectrometer is given. Test beam results show that the spectrometer works well and data analysis procedures are established. The comparisons of the test beam neutron spectra with those of GEANT4 s…
The exact resolution function in transfer vector for the reflectometer HERMÈS at Laboratoire Léon Brillouin is calculated as an example of neutron time-of-fligh spectrometer with double-disk chopper. Calculation accounts for wavelength distribution of the incident beam, tilt of the chopper axis, collimation and gravity, without approximation of gaussian distributions or independence of these different contributions. Numerical implementation is provided that matches the sections of the paper. We show that data fitting using this exact resolution function allows us to reach much better results t…
An analytical method is presented with allows to estimate the energy resolution of time-of-flight neutron spectrometers, as well as its partial contributions, over a dynamical range that extends from the elastic line to the accessible inelastic regions. Such a method, already successfully applied in the past to the TOSCA and HET neutron inelastic scattering spectrometers installed at the ISIS neutron spallation source [A M Gaspar, PhD Thesis, Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, 2004], is here applied to the high resolution time-of-flight spectrometer TOFTOF, mainly dedicated to quasi-elastic neutr…
In this work, we report on the timing performances of the Time-Of-Flight (TOF) apparatus of the FRACAS large acceptance mass spectrometer designed to measure the fragmentation cross sections of a $^{12}$C beam in hadrontherapy. The TOF system is composed of a Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter and scintillating detectors to create so-called $Δ$E---TOF maps used in the fragment charge identification process. From tests with an alpha source and a $^{12}$C beam experiment, we measured a coincidence resolving time for the apparatus below 300 ps. Those results should lead in the final design to the i…
Trapping molecular ions that have been sympathetically cooled with laser-cooled atomic ions is a useful platform for exploring cold ion chemistry. We designed and characterized a new experimental apparatus for probing chemical reaction dynamics between molecular cations and neutral radicals at temperatures below 1 K. The ions are trapped in a linear quadrupole radio-frequency trap and sympathetically cooled by co-trapped, laser-cooled, atomic ions. The ion trap is coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to readily identify product ion species, as well as to accurately determine trapped i…
We demonstrate the implementation of a simple time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometer with medium-mass resolution ($m/Δm\sim50$) geared towards the demands of atomic, molecular, and chemical physics experiments. By utilizing a novel radial ion extraction scheme from a linear quadrupole trap, a device with large trap capacity and high optical access is realized without sacrificing mass resolution. Here we describe the construction and implementation of the device as well as present representative ToF spectra. We conclude by demonstrating the flexibility of the device with proof-of-principle expe…
A position-sensitive, high-resolution time-of-flight detector for fission fragments has been developed. The SPectrometer for Ion DEterminiation in fission Research (SPIDER) is a $2E-2v$ spectrometer designed to measure the mass of light fission fragments to a single mass unit. The time pick-off detector pairs to be used in SPIDER have been tested with $α$-particles from $^{229}$Th and its decay chain and $α$-particles and spontaneous fission fragments from $^{252}$Cf. Each detector module is comprised of a thin electron conversion foil, electrostatic mirror, microchannel plates, and delay-line…
We describe a spin-resolved electron spectrometer capable of uniquely efficient and high energy resolution measurements. Spin analysis is obtained through polarimetry based on low-energy exchange scattering from a ferromagnetic thin-film target. This approach can achieve a similar analyzing power (Sherman function) as state-of-the-art Mott scattering polarimeters, but with as much as 100 times improved efficiency due to increased reflectivity. Performance is further enhanced by integrating the polarimeter into a time-of-flight (TOF) based energy analysis scheme with a precise and flexible elec…
The search for neutrinoless double beta decay requires increasingly advanced methods of background reduction. A bold approach to solving this problem, in experiments using Xe-136, is to extract and identify the daughter Ba-136 ion produced by double beta decay. Tagging events in this manner allows for a virtually background-free verification of double beta decay signals. Various approaches are being pursued by the nEXO collaboration to achieve Ba-tagging. A Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR TOF) has been designed and optimized as one of the ion-identification methods, where…
The MAPS direct geometry time-of-flight chopper spectrometer at the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source has been in operation since 1999 and its novel use of a large array of position-sensitive neutron detectors paved the way for a later generations of chopper spectrometers around the world. Almost two decades of experience of user operations on MAPS, together with lessons learned from the operation of new generation instruments, led to a decision to perform three parallel upgrades to the instrument. These were to replace the primary beamline collimation with supermirror neutron guides, to ins…
New operation mode, "separated flow mode", has been developed for in-flight proton decay experiments with the SHARAQ spectrometer. In the separated flow mode, the protons and the heavy-ion products are separated and measured in coincidence at two different focal planes of SHARAQ. The ion-optical properties of the new mode were studied by using a proton beam at $246~{\rm MeV}$, and the momentum vector was properly reconstructed from the parameters measured in the focal plane of SHARAQ. In the experiment with the $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F})$ reaction at a beam energy of $247~{\rm MeV/u}$, t…
A time of flight MIEZE spectrometer study is presented. The instrument uses solenoid radio frequency (RF) spin flippers with square pole shoes and a magnetic yoke. These flippers can achieve higher static fields than conventional resonant RF spin flippers, which employ an air core. High fields are crucial for the construction of a high resolution and compact MIEZE spectrometer. Using both types of flippers two MIEZE spectrometer configurations are constructed and compared on the same beam line. It was demonstrated that the pole shoe/solenoid coil RF flippers can achieve a MIEZE signal, which i…
Here we describe an advanced multi functional, variable-energy positron beam system capable of measuring the energies of multiple positron-induced electrons in coincidence with the Doppler-shifted gamma photon resulting from the annihilation of the correlated positron. The measurements were carried out using the unique characteristics of the digital time-of-flight spectrometer and the gamma spectrometer available with the advanced positron beam system. These measurements have resulted in (i) the first digital time of flight spectrum of positron annihilation-induced Auger electrons generated us…
We propose a new method for absolute momentum calibration of magnetic spectrometers used in nuclear physics, using the time-of-flight (TOF), differences of pairs of particles with different masses. In cases where the flight path is not known, a calibration can be determined by using the TOF differences of two pair combinations of three particles. A Cherenkov detector, read out by a radio frequency photomultiplier tube, is considered as the high-resolution and highly stable TOF detector. By means of Monte Carlo simulations it is demonstrated that the magnetic spectrometers at the MAMI electron-…

The PSI low-energy $μ$SR spectrometer is an instrument dedicated to muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. Knowledge of the muon beam parameters such as spatial, kinetic energy and arrival-time distributions at the sample position are important ingredients to analyze the $μ$SR spectra. We present here the measured energy losses in the thin carbon foil of the muon start detector deduced from time-of-flight measurements. Muonium formation in the thin carbon foil (10 nm thickness) of the muon start detector also affect the measurable decay asymmetry and therefore need to be accounted for…
The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment aims at a measurement of the neutrino mass with a 90 % confidence limit (C.L.) sensitivity of 0.2 eV/c$^2$ by measuring the endpoint region of the tritium $β$ decay spectrum from a windowless gaseous molecular tritium source using an integrating spectrometer of the MAC-E-Filter type. We discuss the idea of using the MAC-E-Filter in a time-of-flight mode (MAC-E-TOF) in which the neutrino mass is determined by a measurement of the electron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum that depends on the neutrino mass. MAC-E-TOF spectroscopy here is a very sens…
The Multi-Grid detector technology has evolved from the proof-of-principle and characterisation stages. Here we report on the performance of the Multi-Grid detector, the MG.CNCS prototype, which has been installed and tested at the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer, CNCS at SNS. This has allowed a side-by-side comparison to the performance of $^3$He detectors on an operational instrument. The demonstrator has an active area of 0.2 m$^2$. It is specifically tailored to the specifications of CNCS. The detector was installed in June 2016 and has operated since then, collecting neutron scattering …

Such spectrometers are in particular useful for probing unbound states of exotic nuclei, using invariant mass spectroscopy with reactions at intermediate and high energies. We discuss here the key characteristic features of such spectrometers, by introducing the recently commissioned SAMURAI facility at the RIBF, RIKEN. We also explore the issue of cross talk in the detection of multiple neutrons, which has become crucial for exploring further unbound states …

The circuits simultaneously detect the position and the fine/coarse flight time of an ion for the MALDI-ToF mass spectrometer. We discuss the circuit design and present the simulation results of a prototype detector comprised of a 32 x 32 pixel array in which each pixel pitch is 40 um and the time resolution is a minimum of 1 ns. The results of transient analysis demonstrate the fully correct synchronous operation at a 100-MHz clock frequency and simultaneous 32-word…
We report on spectroscopy and time-of-flight measurements using an 18 keV fast-pulsed photoelectron source of adjustable intensity, ranging from single photoelectrons per pulse to 5 photoelectrons per microsecond at pulse repetition rates of up to 10 kHz. Short pulses between 40 ns and 40 microseconds in length were produced by switching light emitting diodes with central output wavelengths of 265 nm and 257 nm, in the deep ultraviolet (or UV-C) regime, at kHz frequencies. Such photoelectron sources can be useful calibration devices for testing the properties of high-resolution electrostatic s…

A neutron spectrometer, the European Low-Energy Neutron Spectrometer (ELENS), has been constructed to study exotic nuclei in inverse-kinematics experiments. The spectrometer, which consists of plastic scintillator bars, can be operated in the neutron energy range of 100 keV to 10 MeV. The neutron energy is determined using the time-of-flight technique, while the position of the neutron detection is deduced from the time-difference information from photomultipliers attached to both ends of each bar. A novel wrapping method has been developed for the plastic scintillators. The array has a larger…
The CAMEA ESS neutron spectrometer is designed to achieve a high detection efficiency in the horizontal scattering plane, and to maximize the use of the long pulse European Spallation Source. It is an indirect geometry time-of-flight spectrometer that uses crystal analysers to determine the final energy of neutrons scattered from the sample. Unlike other indirect gemeotry spectrometers CAMEA will use ten concentric arcs of analysers to analyse scattered neutrons at ten different final energies, which can be increased to 30 final energies by use of prismatic analysis. In this report we will out…
Calibration of three scintillators (EJ232Q, BC422Q and EJ410) in a time-of-flight (TOF) arrangement using a laser drive-neutron source is presented. The three plastic scintillator detectors were calibrated with gamma insensitive bubble detector spectrometers, which were absolutely calibrated over a wide range of neutron energies ranging from sub MeV to 20 MeV. A typical set of data obtained simultaneously by the detectors are shown, measuring the neutron spectrum emitted from a petawatt laser irradiated thin foil.
A newly assembled multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph (MRTOF-MS) at RIKEN's RIBF facility became operational for the first time in spring 2020; further modifications and performance tests using stable ions were completed in early 2021. By using a pulsed-drift-tube technique to modify the ions' kinetic energy in a wide range, we directly characterize the dispersion function of the system for use in a new procedure for optimizing the voltages applied to the electrostatic mirrors. Thus far, a mass resolving power of $R_m > 1\,000\,000$ is reached within a total time-of-flight of onl…
We present the concept of a novel time-focusing technique for neutron spectrometers, which allows to disentangle time-focusing from beam divergence. The core of this approach is a double rotating-crystal monochromator that can be used to extract a larger wavelength band from a white beam, thus providing a higher flux at the sample compared to standard time-of-flight instruments, yet preserving energy resolution and beam collimation. The performances of a spectrometer based on this approach are quantitatively discussed in terms of possible incident wavelengths, flux at the sample and $(Q,E)$-re…
There is a proposal to search for a sterile neutrino in a few keV mass range by the "Troitsk nu-mass" facility. In order to estimate sterile neutrino mixing one needs to make precision spectrum measurements well below the endpoint using the existing electrostatic spectrometer with a magnetic adiabatic collimation, or MAC-E filter. The expected signature will be a kink in the electron energy spectrum in tritium beta-decay. In this article we consider the systematic effect of electron backscattering on the detector used in the spectrometer. For this purpose we provide a set of Monte-Carlo simula…

This article focuses on the pre-launch characterization of HXI's spectrometer, including detection efficiency, energy resolution, and energy to ADC channel (E-C) relationship. The detection efficiency characterization necessitates a sufficient number of calibrated energy points in the HXI observation energy range, with a refined measurement around the absorption edge of the lanthanum bromide crystal, and…
In both particle physics and muon applications, a high-resolution muon momentum measurement capability plays a significant role not only in providing valuable information on the properties of subatomic particles but also in improving the utilizability of cosmic ray muons. Typically, muon momentum is measured by reconstructing a curved muon path using a strong magnetic field and muon trackers. Alternatively, a time-of-flight and Cherenkov ring imager are less frequently applied, especially when there is a need to avoid a magnetic field. However, measurement resolution is much less than that of …

The first lead neutron slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) from a pulsed source in elastic scattering on lead nuclei has been constructed in the laboratory of the atomic nucleus of the Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences LPI. Currently, there are several operating lead neutron slowing-down spectrometers: LSDS-100 in Russia, RINS in United States, KULS in Japan and others. A relation between an energy of lead slowing-down moderated neutrons E (eV) and the time delay of t (μs) is described by the expression: E(t) = K/(t + t_0)^2, where values of K=170.5 (keV μs^2), t_0 = 0.3 (μs) i…
Time-of-flight-based momentum microscopy has a growing presence in photoemission studies, as it enables parallel energy- and momentum-resolved acquisition of the full photoelectron distribution. Here, we report table-top extreme ultraviolet (XUV) time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) featuring both a hemispherical analyzer and a momentum microscope within the same setup. We present a systematic comparison of the two detection schemes and quantify experimentally relevant parameters, including pump- and probe-induced space-charge effects, detection efficiency, photoelectr…

The presented device is specifically designed for the Time-resolved atomic, Molecular and Optical science end station…
Achieving the highest possible mass resolving power in a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer requires very high-stability power supplies. To this end, we have developed a programmable high-voltage power supply that can achieve long-term stability on the order of parts-per-million. Herein we present the design of the stable high-voltage system and bench-top stability measurements up to 1~kV; the stabilization technique can, in principle, be applied up to 15~kV or more.. We demonstrate that in the $\le$1~Hz band the output stability is on the level of 1~part per million (ppm) durin…

General Fusion is building the Fusion Demonstration Plant to demonstrate a magnetized target fusion scheme in which a deuterium plasma is heated from 200 eV to 10 keV by piston-driven compression of a liquid-lithium liner. The multilayer coaxial time-of-flight (MCTOF) neutron emission spectrometer is designed to measure the ion temperature near peak compression at which time the neutron yield will approach $10^{18}$ neutrons/s. The neutron energy distribution is expected to be Gaussian since the machine uses no neutral beam or radiofrequency heating. In this case, analysis shows that as few as…
