The recoil optical force that acts on emitters near a surface or waveguide relies on near-field directionality and conservation of momentum. It features desirable properties uncommon in optical forces, such as the ability to produce it via wide-area illumination of vast numbers of particles without the need for focusing, or being dynamically switchable via the polarization of light. Unfortunately, these recoil forces are usually very weak and have not been experimentally observed in small dipolar particles. Some works theoretically demonstrate orders-of-magnitude enhancement of these forces via complex nano-structuring involving hyperbolic surfaces or metamaterials, complicating the fabrication and experimental demonstration. In this work, we theoretically and numerically show enhancement of the lateral recoil force by simply using thin metallic films, which support ultra-high-momentum plasmonic modes. The high-momentum carried by these modes impart a correspondingly large recoil force on the dipole, enhancing the force by several orders of magnitude in a remarkably simple geometry, bringing it closer to practical applications.
An effect that is an analogue to the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect in a uniform space would be observed in a space with a boundary of well reflecting light metal-dielectric. The main difference is in that quanta of some electron volt would be excited by an electron of energy of some tens of electron volts. This would become possible because the surface plasmon velocity is very small as compared with the velocity of waves of a uniform space. Beetwen excited plasmons there is a plasmon with a linear momentum as high as the doubled initial momentum of the electron.
We analyze, by means of numerical simulations, transmission enhancements through sub- wavelength slits due to the presence of sets of plasmonic nanocylinders, placed near the exit of these apertures. Further, we extend this study to photonic crystals of dipolar plasmonic particles in front of an array of extraordinarily transmitting slits practiced in a metallic slab.
We investigate lateral recoil forces exerted on nanoparticles located near plasmonic platforms with in-plane nonreciprocal response. To this purpose, we first develop a comprehensive theoretical framework based on the Lorentz force within the Rayleigh approximation combined with nonreciprocal Green's functions and then derive approximate analytical expressions to model lateral recoil forces, demonstrating their explicit dependence on the dispersion relation of the system and unveiling the mechanisms that govern them. In particular, a dominant lateral recoil force component appears due to the m…
Plasmonic nanostructures, which are used to generate surface plasmon polaritions (SPPs), always involve sharp corners where the charges can accumulate. This can result in strong localized electromagnetic fields at the metallic corners, forming hot spots. The influence of the hot spots on the propagating SPPs are investigated theoretically and experimentally in a metallic slit structure. It is found that the electromagnetic fields radiated from the hot spots, termed as the hot spot cylindrical wave (HSCW), can greatly manipulate the SPP launching in the slit structure. The physical mechanism be…
We have studied theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the third-order optical nonlinearity of a coherently coupled hybrid system of a metal nanoparticle and a semiconductor quantum dot in the presence of a strong control field with a weak probe field.
We theoretically examine plasmonic resonance between two close metallic grains separated by a gap of width much less than the length of the incident electromagnetic wave. Resonance conditions are established and the electric field enhancement is found. Our general arguments are confirmed by analytic solution of the problem for simplest geometries. We discuss an extension of our results to more complex cases.
We demonstrate that the surface second-harmonic generation can lead to the formation of nonlinear plasmonic whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in microcavities made of metallic nanowires. Since these WGMs are excited by induced surface nonlinear dipoles, they can be generated even when they are not coupled to the radiation continuum. Consequently, the quality factor of these nonlinear modes can be as large as the theoretical limit imposed by the optical losses in the metal. Remarkably, our theoretical analysis shows that nonlinear plasmonic WGMs are characterized by fractional azimuthal modal num…
A composite plasmonic slab based on double-layer metallic gratings and a dielectric film is experimentally and numerically demonstrated in terahertz (THz) regions, which can support two resonance modes and then form a broad bandgap (40%). As compared to the double-layer metal grating, the dielectric film in composite THz slabs significantly enhances the transmission of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode. Electric field vector proved that the low-frequency resonance mode originates from the symmetric plasmonic mode and the high-frequency resonance mode is induced by the hybrid mode of plasmonic …
It was widely accepted that embedding of metallic layers into optoelectronic structures is detrimental to lasing due absorption in metal. However, recently macroscopic optical coherence and lasing was observed in microcavities with intra-cavity single metallic layer. Here we propose the design of the of microcavity-type structure with two intra-cavity metallic layers which could serve as contacts for electrical pumping. The design of optical modes based on utilizing peculiarities of Tamm plasmon provides vanishing absorption due to fixing of the node of electric field of optical mode to metall…
Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin…
We report on the investigation of plasmonic resonances in metallic Möbius nanorings. Half-integer numbers of resonant modes are observed due to the presence of an extra phase π provided by the topology of the Möbius nanostrip. Anomalous plasmon modes located at the non-orientable surface of the Möbius nanoring break the symmetry that exist in conventional ring cavities, thus enable far-field excitation and emission as bright modes. The far-field resonant wavelength as well as the feature of half-integer mode numbers is invariant to the change of charge distribution on the Möbius nanoring due t…
We study an optical response of a system of two parallel close metallic cylinders having nanoscale dimensions. Surface plasmon excitation in the gap between the cylinders are specifically analyzed. In particular, resonance frequencies and field enhancement were investigated as functions of geometrical characteristics of the system and Ohmic losses in the metal. The results of numerical simulations were systematically compared with the analytical theory, obtained in the quasi-static limit. The analytical method was generalized in order to take into account the retardation effects. We also prese…
We investigate the supersymmetry (SUSY) structures for inductor-capacitor circuit networks on a simple regular graph and its line graph. We show that their eigenspectra must coincide (except, possibly, for the highest eigenfrequency) due to SUSY, which is derived from the topological nature of the circuits. To observe this spectra correspondence in the high-frequency range, we study spoof plasmons on metallic hexagonal and kagomé lattices. The band correspondence between them is predicted by a simulation. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we demonstrate the band correspondence of fabri…
We study the dispersion relation of a metamaterial composed of metallic disks and bars arranged to have kagome symmetry and find that a plasmonic flat band is formed by the topological nature of the kagome lattice. To confirm the flat-band formation, we fabricate the metamaterial and make transmission measurements in the terahertz regime. Two bands formed by transmission minima that depend on the polarization of the incident terahertz beams are observed. One of the bands corresponds to the flat band, as confirmed by the fact that the resonant frequency is almost independent of the incident ang…
We show that the optical force exerted on a finite size chiral sphere by a surface plasmon mode has a component along a direction perpendicular to the plasmon linear momentum. We reveal how this chiral lateral force, pointing in opposite directions for opposite enantiomers, stems from an angular-to-linear crossed momentum transfer involving the plasmon transverse spin angular momentum density and mediated by the chirality of the sphere. Our multipolar approach allows us discussing the inclusion of the recoil term in the force on a small sphere taken in the dipolar limit and observing sign inve…
We demonstrate a nonradiative flat band for spoof surface plasmon polaritons bounded on a structured surface with Lieb lattice symmetry in the terahertz regime. First, we theoretically derive the dispersion relation of spoof plasmons in a metallic Lieb lattice based on the electrical circuit model. We obtain three bands, one of which is independent of wave vector. To confirm the theoretical result, we numerically and experimentally observe the flat band in transmission and attenuated total reflection configurations. We reveal that the quality factor of the nonradiative flat-band mode decoupled…
In this letter, we perform numerical and experimental studies of the optical response of an original configuration based on enhanced transmission through guided mode based metamaterials. The proposed structure is inspired by annular aperture array (AAA) where the cylindrical symmetry is broken in order to acquire polarization-sensitive metasurfaces. The experimental results, which are in good agreement with numerical simulations, demonstrate that the structure acts as a polarizer exhibiting an extinction ratio of (15:1) with a maximum transmission coefficient up to 85% which is more efficient …
When a sculptured thin film (STF), made of a metal and $\leq50$ nm thick, is used in lieu of a dense layer of metal in the Kretschmann configuration, experimental data for an STF comprising parallel tilted nanowires shows that a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can still be excited. As the porosity of the chosen STF increases, experimental data and numerical simulations indicate the SPR dip with respect to the angle of incidence of the exciting plane wave widens and eventually disappears, leaving behind a a vestigial peak near the onset to the total-internal-reflection regime.
We proposed an experimentally feasible scheme of nano-plamonic switch and quantum router via the single self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) with a V type three-level energy structure located between two silver metallic waveguides. We studied theoretically transmission and transfer rates of single plasmons in such a multi-ports system via the real-space approach, where our results showed that single plasmons from the input port could be switchable and redirected by controlling parameters, such as the intensity of the classical field, the detunings, and the interaction bet…
We present optical investigations of rectangular surface plasmon polariton waveguides lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. The plasmon propagation length is directly determined using a confocal microscope, with independent polarization control in both excitation and detection channels. Surface plasmon polaritons are launched along the waveguide using a lithographically defined defect at one end. At the remote end of the waveguide they scatter into the far-field, where they are imaged using a CCD camera. By monitoring the length dependence of the intensity of scattered light from the wa…
In recent years, there has been intensive investigation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the science and engineering fields. Understanding the physics of surface plasmon excitation is essential to the manipulation of SPPs, and most existing studies focus on (-1,0)-type SPP excitation. In this article, we report our recent investigation of the (0,+/- 1)-type SPP excitation of a gold two-dimensional nano-cavity array using finite-difference time-domain methodology. Our particular focus is on the symmetry properties of (0,+/- 1)-SPPs excited by different polarizations of light. It is found…
We investigated theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the population dynamics and the absorption properties of a hybrid nanosystem composed of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a V-type three level semiconductor quantum dot (SQD), which are created by the interaction with the induced dipole moments in the SQD and the MNP, respectively. Excitons of the SQD and the plasmons of the MNP in such a hybrid nanosystem could be coupled strongly or weakly to demonstrate novel properties of the hybrid system. Our results show that the nonlinear optical response of the hybrid nanosystem can b…
Magnetic localized surface plasmons (LSPs) supported on metallic structures corrugated by very long and curved grooves have been recently proposed and demonstrated on an extremely thin metallic spiral structure (MSS) in the microwave regime. However, the mode profile for the magnetic LSPs was demonstrated by measuring only the electric field, not the magnetic field.
The propagation of plasmonic waves in various metallic quantum nanostructures have considered attention for their applications in technology. The quantum plasmonic properties of metallic nanostructures in the quantum size regime have been difficult to describe by an appropriate model. Here the nonlocal quantum plasmons are investigated in the most important metals of copper, gold, and silver. Dispersion properties of these metals and propagation of longitudinal quantum plasmons in the high photon energy regime are studied by a new model of nonlocal quantum dielectric permittivity. The epsilon …
Plasmonic nanolasers have ultrahigh lasing thresholds, especially those devices for which all three dimensions are truly subwavelength. Because of a momentum mismatch between the propagating light and localized optical field of the subwavelength nanocavity, poor optical pumping efficiency is another important reason for the ultrahigh threshold but is normally always ignored. Based on a cavity-embedded nanoantenna array design, we demonstrate a room-temperature low-threshold plasmonic nanolaser that is robust, reproducible, and easy-to-fabricate using chemical-template lithography. The mode vol…
We predict an optical curtain effect, i.e., formation of a spatially invariant light field as light emerges from a set of periodic metallic nano-objects. The underlying physical mechanism of generation of this unique optical curtain can be explained in both the spatial domain and the wave-vector domain. In particular, in each period we use one metallic nanostrip to equate the amplitudes of lights impinging on the openings of two metallic nanoslits and also shift their phases by pi difference. We elaborate the influence on the output effect from some geometrical parameters like the periodicity,…
Absorption efficiency profiles and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths are reported for metallic core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) placed over a BK7 glass substrate. A numerical study is performed with the vectorized version of the discrete dipole approximation with surface interactions (DDA-SI-v). Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) metallic components are used for the simulations of two different core-shell structures. Absorption enhancement and the hybrid modes of plasmon resonances of the core-shell structures are compared by using a measure that defines a size configuration. It is o…
A metallic film of arbitrary thickness is considered. We show that the problem of description of surface plasma oscillations (surface plasmons) with reflection boundary conditions allows analytic solution. Besides, this problem allows generalization for more general case of conducting matter (in particular, and for semiconductors).
We demonstrate that the introduction of a subwavelength periodic modulation into a metallic structure strongly modifies the guiding characteristics of the surface plasmon modes supported by the system. Moreover, it is also shown how a new type of a tightly confined surface plasmon polariton mode can be created by just milling a periodic corrugation into a metallic ridge placed on top of a metal surface.
The self-assembly of metallic colloidal clusters (so called plasmonic metamolecules) has been viewed as a versatile, but highly effective approach for the materialization of the metamaterials exhibiting artificial magnetism at optical frequencies (including visible and near infrared (NIR) regimes). Indeed, several proofs of concepts of plasmonic metamolecules have been successfully demonstrated in both theoretical and experimental ways. Nevertheless, this self-assembly strategy has barely been used and still remains an underutilized method. For example, the self-assembly and optical utilizatio…
The plasmon oscillations in a cluster of two metallic nanospheres are studied theoretically. Particular attention is paid to the case of nearly touching spheres. Simple analytical expressions have been found for the spectra of plasmon oscillations of different symmetry in this case. A new type of the plasmon oscillations, which are strongly localized between the spheres, and which totally disappear at separation of the spheres, has been discovered. The found plasmon oscillations have a dramatic effect on optical properties of an atom localized between the spheres.
Out-of-plane lattice plasmons (OLPs) supported by metallic nanoparticle arrays are promising for diverse applications due to their remarkably narrow linewidths and significant enhancement of local fields. Here we investigate the necessary conditions for metallic nanoparticle arrays to achieve OLPs. Our results show that, besides the prerequisites of large height, oblique incidence, and TM polarization, which have been pointed out by the literature; the array period should be properly designed within a limited range, the dielectric environment should be homogeneous, and the height and the angle…
The strength of light emission near metallic nanostructures can scale anomalously with frequency and dimensionality. We find that light-matter interactions in plasmonic systems confined in two dimensions (e.g., near metal nanowires) strengthen with decreasing frequency owing to strong mode confinement away from the surface plasmon frequency. The anomalous scaling also applies to the modulation speed of plasmonic light sources, including lasers, with modulation bandwidths growing at lower carrier frequencies. This allows developing optical devices that exhibit simultaneously femto-second respon…
We report on the strong coupling between inorganic quantum well excitons and surface plasmons. For that purpose a corrugated silver film was deposited on the top of a heterostructure consisting of GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells. The formation of plasmon/heavy-hole exciton/light-hole exciton mixed states is demonstrated with reflectometry experiments. The interaction energies amount to 21 meV for the plasmon/light-hole exciton and 22 meV for the plasmon/heavy-hole exciton. Some particularities of the plasmon-exciton coupling were also discussed and qualitatively related to the plasmon polarization.
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
It has been recently demonstrated that textured closed surfaces which are made out of perfect electric conductors (PECs) can mimic highly localized surface plasmons (LSPs). Here, we propose an effective medium which can accurately model LSP resonances in a two-dimensional periodically decorated PEC cylinder. The accuracy of previous models is limited to structures with deep-subwavelength and high number of grooves. However, we show that our model can successfully predict the ultra-sharp LSP resonances which exist in structures with relatively lower number of grooves. Such resonances are not co…
Inelastic interaction of free-electrons with optical near fields has recently attracted attention for manipulating and shaping free-electron wavepackets. Understanding the nature and the dependence of the inelastic cross section on the polarization of the optical near-field is important for both fundamental aspects and the development of new applications in quantum-sensitive measurements. Here, we investigate the effect of the polarization and the spatial profile of plasmonic near-field distributions on shaping free-electrons and controlling the energy transfer mechanisms, but also tailoring t…
We address the issue of the second-order coherence of single surface plasmons launched by a quantum source of light into extended gold films. The quantum source of light is made of a scanning fluorescent nanodiamond hosting five nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers. By using a specially designed microscopy that combines near-field optics with far-field leakage-radiation microscopy in the Fourier space and adapted spatial filtering, we find that the quantum statistics of the initial source of light is preserved after conversion to surface plasmons and propagation along the polycrystalline gold f…
The spontaneous emission of radiation of metallic electrons embedded in a high-intensity enhanced surface plasmon field is considered analytically. The electrons are described by exact dressed quantum states which contain the interaction with the plasmon field non-perturbatively. Considerable deviations from the pertubative behaviour have been found in the intensity dependence of the emitted fundamental and the second harmonic signals, even at moderate incoming laser intensities. The theoretical predictions deduced from the formalism are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental resu…
The optical properties of metallic tin nanoparticles embedded in silicon-based host materials were studied. Thin films containing the nanoparticles were produced using RF magnetron sputtering followed by ex situ heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the nanoparticle shape and size distribution; spherical, metallic tin nanoparticles were always found. The presence of a localized surface plasmon resonance in the nanoparticles was observed when SiO2 and amorphous silicon were the host materials. Optical spectroscopy revealed that the localized surface plasmon reso…
Recently, a new device to measure the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) electronic spectrum after elastic/inelastic scattering in a transmission electron microscope has been introduced. We modified the theoretical framework needed to describe conventional low loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments in transmission electron microscopes (TEM) to study surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures, to allow for an OAM post selection and devise new experiments for the analysis of these excitations in nanostructures. We found that unprecedented information on the symmetries and on the …
By viewing plasmon waves in metallic waveguides as propagating electric and magnetic dipoles we show that according to laws of quantum mechanics they will acquire additional phase when propagating through space with static magnetic field. The new effect is physically different from conventional magneto-plasmonic phenomena and is sufficiently strong to observe it under routinely accessible experimental conditions.
We consider a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of metallic nanoparticles, each supporting a localized surface plasmon, and study the quantum properties of the collective plasmons resulting from the near field dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles. We analytically investigate the dispersion, the effective Hamiltonian and the eigenstates of the collective plasmons for an arbitrary orientation of the individual dipole moments. When the polarization points close to the normal to the plane the spectrum presents Dirac cones, similar to those present in the electronic band structure of graph…
Using a random array of coupled metallic nanowires as a generic example of disordered plasmonic systems, we demonstrate that the structural disorder induces localization of light in these nanostructures at a deep-subwavelength scale. The ab initio analysis is based on solving the complete set of 3D Maxwell equations. We find that random variations of the radius of coupled plasmonic nanowires are sufficient to induce the Anderson localization (AL) of surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs), the size of these trapped modes being significantly smaller than the wavelength. Remarkably, the optical-gain c…
Plasmon-mediated superradiance for molecules around metallic nanospheres was proposed ten years ago. However, its demonstration has not been achieved yet due to the experimental difficulty of positioning molecules, and the theoretical limitation to the enhanced collective rate of low excited molecules. In this Letter, we propose that the ultrafast plasmon-mediated superradiant pulses can be observed with strongly excited methylene blue molecules standing vertically inside gold nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities. Our simulations indicate that in this system the molecules could interact with ea…
We theoretically investigate plasmon polaritons in cubic lattices of spherical metallic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles, each supporting triply-degenerate localized surface plasmons, couple through the Coulomb dipole-dipole interaction, giving rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole metamaterial. The latter hybridize with photons forming plasmon polaritons, which are the hybrid light-matter eigenmodes of the system. We derive general analytical expressions to evaluate both plasmon and plasmon-polariton dispersions, and the corresponding eigenstates. These are obtained within a …
The concepts of spoof surface plasmon polaritons and adiabatic field compression are employed to design metallic near-field probes that allow guiding and focusing of mid-infrared wavelength electromagnetic radiation and provides subwavelength field confinements and a lateral optical resolution of about 10 nm.
We investigate the collective plasmonic modes in a chain of metallic nanoparticles that are coupled by near-field interactions. The size- and momentum-dependent nonradiative Landau damping and radiative decay rates are calculated analytically within an open quantum system approach. These decay rates determine the excitation propagation along the chain. In particular, the behavior of the radiative decay rate as a function of the plasmon wavelength leads to a transition from an exponential decay of the collective excitation for short distances to an algebraic decay for large distances. Important…
Over the last three decades, plasmonics using metallic nanostructures has become central to nanophotonics research. Recently, its targets have been extended to nonlinear optical phenomena. In a nonlinear regime, quantum mechanical effects, as exemplified by electron spill-out on the surface of nanostructures, significantly influence the optical response. Quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) is a promising basis for the analysis of nonlinear optical responses involving such quantum mechanical effects. Herein, QHT was applied to calculate the third-order optical nonlinearity of a spherical metallic…
We analytically examine propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at a thin metallic film between glass substrate and electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) medium. High-precision and high-resolution in frequency domain provided by EIT paves the way towards plasmonic group velocities reduction even by $4$ orders of magnitude and corresponding lifetime enhancement of SPPs up to microseconds.
We study theoretically "graphene-like" plasmonic metamaterials constituted by two-dimensional arrays of metallic nanoparticles, including perfect honeycomb structures with and without inversion symmetry, as well as generic bipartite lattices. The dipolar interactions between localised surface plasmons in different nanoparticles gives rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole lattice. We study the band structure of collective plasmons and unveil its tunability with the orientation of the dipole moments associated with the localised surface plasmons. Depending on the dipole orientat…
Chiral surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be generated by linearly polarized light incident at the end of a nanowire, exciting a coherent superposition of three specific nanowire waveguide modes. Images of chiral SPPs on individual nanowires obtained from quantum dot fluorescence excited by the SPP evanescent field reveal the chirality predicted in our theoretical model. The handedness and spatial extent of the helical periods of the chiral SPPs depend on the input polarization angle and nanowire diameter as well as the dielectric environment. Chirality is preserved in the free-space output…
We investigate a method to directly measure the phase of a laser beam reflected from a metallic film after excitation of surface plasmon polaritons. This method permits real time access to the phase information, it increases the possible speed of data acquisition, and it may thus prove useful for increasing the sensitivity of surface plasmon based sensors.
We investigate theoretically the optical properties associated to plasmon resonances of metal nanowires with cross section given by low-order Chebyshev nanoparticles (like rounded-tip nanostars or nanoflowers). The impact of the nanoflower shape is analyzed for varying symmetry and deformation parameter through the spectral dependence of resonances, and their corresponding near field distributions. Large field intensity enhancements are obtained at the gaps between petals, apart from the tips themselves, which make these nanostars/nanoflowers specially suitable to host molecules for SERS sensi…
