In recent years, there has been intensive investigation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the science and engineering fields. Understanding the physics of surface plasmon excitation is essential to the manipulation of SPPs, and most existing studies focus on (-1,0)-type SPP excitation. In this article, we report our recent investigation of the (0,+/- 1)-type SPP excitation of a gold two-dimensional nano-cavity array using finite-difference time-domain methodology. Our particular focus is on the symmetry properties of (0,+/- 1)-SPPs excited by different polarizations of light. It is found that polarization has strong implications for the field distribution of the corresponding SPPs. As a result, the control of polarization may provide important insights into the manipulation of SPPs.
We demonstrate thermally tunable superconductor hole array with active control over their resonant transmission induced by surface plasmon polaritons . The array was lithographically fabricated on high temperature YBCO superconductor and characterized by terahertz-time domain spectroscopy. We observe a clear transition from the virtual excitation of the surface plasmon mode to the real surface plasmon mode. The highly tunable superconducting plasmonic hole arrays may have promising applications in the design of low-loss, large dynamic range amplitude modulation, and surface plasmon based terah…
We analyze nonlinear effects in optically driven arrays of nonlinear metallic nanoparticles. We demonstrate that such plasmonic systems are characterized by a bistable response, and they can support the propagation of dissipative switching waves (or plasmonic kinks) connecting the states with different polarization. We study numerically the properties of such plasmonic kinks which are characterized by a subwavelength extent and a tunable velocity.
We analyze, by means of numerical simulations, transmission enhancements through sub- wavelength slits due to the presence of sets of plasmonic nanocylinders, placed near the exit of these apertures. Further, we extend this study to photonic crystals of dipolar plasmonic particles in front of an array of extraordinarily transmitting slits practiced in a metallic slab.
Plasmonic nanostructures, which are used to generate surface plasmon polaritions (SPPs), always involve sharp corners where the charges can accumulate. This can result in strong localized electromagnetic fields at the metallic corners, forming hot spots. The influence of the hot spots on the propagating SPPs are investigated theoretically and experimentally in a metallic slit structure. It is found that the electromagnetic fields radiated from the hot spots, termed as the hot spot cylindrical wave (HSCW), can greatly manipulate the SPP launching in the slit structure. The physical mechanism be…
We have studied theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the third-order optical nonlinearity of a coherently coupled hybrid system of a metal nanoparticle and a semiconductor quantum dot in the presence of a strong control field with a weak probe field.
We theoretically examine plasmonic resonance between two close metallic grains separated by a gap of width much less than the length of the incident electromagnetic wave. Resonance conditions are established and the electric field enhancement is found. Our general arguments are confirmed by analytic solution of the problem for simplest geometries. We discuss an extension of our results to more complex cases.
We demonstrate that the surface second-harmonic generation can lead to the formation of nonlinear plasmonic whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in microcavities made of metallic nanowires. Since these WGMs are excited by induced surface nonlinear dipoles, they can be generated even when they are not coupled to the radiation continuum. Consequently, the quality factor of these nonlinear modes can be as large as the theoretical limit imposed by the optical losses in the metal. Remarkably, our theoretical analysis shows that nonlinear plasmonic WGMs are characterized by fractional azimuthal modal num…
We report the design and experimental realization of a kind of miniaturized devices for efficient unidirectional launching and shaping of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Each device consists of an array of evenly spaced gap plasmon resonators with varying dimensions. Particle swarm optimization is used to achieve a theoretical two dimensional launching efficiency of about 51%, under the normal illumination of a 5-μm waist Gaussian beam at 780 nm. By modifying the wavefront of the SPPs, unidirectional SPPs with focused, Bessel and Airy profiles are launched and imaged with leakage radiation …
It was widely accepted that embedding of metallic layers into optoelectronic structures is detrimental to lasing due absorption in metal. However, recently macroscopic optical coherence and lasing was observed in microcavities with intra-cavity single metallic layer. Here we propose the design of the of microcavity-type structure with two intra-cavity metallic layers which could serve as contacts for electrical pumping. The design of optical modes based on utilizing peculiarities of Tamm plasmon provides vanishing absorption due to fixing of the node of electric field of optical mode to metall…
Surface plasmon resonance in super-period metal nanoslits can be observed in the first order diffraction as well in the zeroth order transmission. In this paper, surface plasmon resonance modes in various super-period gold nanoslit arrays are investigated. It is found that the surface plasmon resonance frequencies are determined by the small period of the nanoslits in super-period nanoslits. The number of nanoslits in the unit cell super-period and the nanoslit width do not control the surface plasmon resonance frequencies. It is also found that the resonance wavelength observed in the first o…
Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin…
The optical response of metallic nanoparticle arrays is dominated by localized surface plasmon excitations and is the sum of individual particle contributions modified by inter-particle coupling depending on specific array geometry. Here we scrutinize how experimentally measured properties of large scale (30 mm$^{2}$) amorphous Au nanodisk arrays stem from single particle properties and their interaction. They give rise to a distinct oscillatory behavior of the plasmon peak position, full-width at half-maximum, and extinction efficiency which depends on the minimum particle center-to-center (C…
We report on the investigation of plasmonic resonances in metallic Möbius nanorings. Half-integer numbers of resonant modes are observed due to the presence of an extra phase π provided by the topology of the Möbius nanostrip. Anomalous plasmon modes located at the non-orientable surface of the Möbius nanoring break the symmetry that exist in conventional ring cavities, thus enable far-field excitation and emission as bright modes. The far-field resonant wavelength as well as the feature of half-integer mode numbers is invariant to the change of charge distribution on the Möbius nanoring due t…
We present angle- and polarization-resolved measurements of the optical transmission of a subwavelength hole array. These results give a (far-field) visualization of the corresponding (near-field) propagation of the excited surface plasmons and allow for a simple analysis of their polarization properties.
We study an optical response of a system of two parallel close metallic cylinders having nanoscale dimensions. Surface plasmon excitation in the gap between the cylinders are specifically analyzed. In particular, resonance frequencies and field enhancement were investigated as functions of geometrical characteristics of the system and Ohmic losses in the metal. The results of numerical simulations were systematically compared with the analytical theory, obtained in the quasi-static limit. The analytical method was generalized in order to take into account the retardation effects. We also prese…
We investigated the plasmonic modes in a two-dimensional quasicrystalline array of metal nanoparticles. The polarization of the modes is in the array plane. A simplified eigen-decomposition method is presented with the help of rotational symmetry. Two kinds of anti-phase ring modes with radial and tangential polarizations are of highest spatial localizations among all of plasmonic modes. For the leaky characteristic of the anti-phase ring modes, the highest fidelity mode is found to be tangential polarized mode in the quasicrystal array, whereas normal-to-plane polarized mode in the solo ring.…
We investigate the supersymmetry (SUSY) structures for inductor-capacitor circuit networks on a simple regular graph and its line graph. We show that their eigenspectra must coincide (except, possibly, for the highest eigenfrequency) due to SUSY, which is derived from the topological nature of the circuits. To observe this spectra correspondence in the high-frequency range, we study spoof plasmons on metallic hexagonal and kagomé lattices. The band correspondence between them is predicted by a simulation. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we demonstrate the band correspondence of fabri…
Evanescently coupled waveguides are a powerful platform to study and visualize the wave dynamics in tight-binding systems. Here, we investigate the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in arrays of dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides with a propagation constant gradient acting as an effective external potential. Using leakage radiation microscopy, we observe in real-space for single site excitation a periodic breathing of the wavepacket and an oscillatory motion in the case of Gaussian excitation of multiple waveguides. The corresponding momentum resolved spectra are co…
We study the dispersion relation of a metamaterial composed of metallic disks and bars arranged to have kagome symmetry and find that a plasmonic flat band is formed by the topological nature of the kagome lattice. To confirm the flat-band formation, we fabricate the metamaterial and make transmission measurements in the terahertz regime. Two bands formed by transmission minima that depend on the polarization of the incident terahertz beams are observed. One of the bands corresponds to the flat band, as confirmed by the fact that the resonant frequency is almost independent of the incident ang…
We theoretically study the interactions between plasmonic and photonic modes within a structure that is composed of two thin corrugated metallic plates, embedded in air. We show that the interactions depend upon the symmetry of the interacting modes. This observation is explained by the phase difference between the Fourier components of the two gratings. The phase can be controlled by laterally shifting one grating with respect to the other. Therefore, this relative shift provides an efficient "knob" that allows to control the interaction between the various modes, resulting in an efficient mo…
Metallic nanoslit arrays integrated on germanium metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors show many folds of absorption enhancement for transverse-magnetic polarization in the telecommunication C-band. Such high enhancement is attributed to resonant interference of surface plasmon modes at the metal-semiconductor interface. Horizontal surface plasmon modes were reported earlier to inhibit photodetector performance. We computationally show, however, that horizontal modes enhance the efficiency of surface devices despite reducing transmitted light in the far field.
We demonstrate a nonradiative flat band for spoof surface plasmon polaritons bounded on a structured surface with Lieb lattice symmetry in the terahertz regime. First, we theoretically derive the dispersion relation of spoof plasmons in a metallic Lieb lattice based on the electrical circuit model. We obtain three bands, one of which is independent of wave vector. To confirm the theoretical result, we numerically and experimentally observe the flat band in transmission and attenuated total reflection configurations. We reveal that the quality factor of the nonradiative flat-band mode decoupled…
Ag nanoparticles in the form of colloids and ordered arrays are used to demonstrate plasmon-mediated non-radiative energy transfer from quantum dots to quantum wells with varying top barrier thicknesses. Plasmon-mediated energy transfer efficiencies of up to ~25% are observed with the Ag colloids. The distance dependence of the plasmon-mediated energy transfer is found to follow the same d^{-4} dependence as the direct quantum dot to quantum well energy transfer. There is also evidence for an increase in the characteristic distance of the interaction, thus indicating that it follows a Förster-…
In this letter, we perform numerical and experimental studies of the optical response of an original configuration based on enhanced transmission through guided mode based metamaterials. The proposed structure is inspired by annular aperture array (AAA) where the cylindrical symmetry is broken in order to acquire polarization-sensitive metasurfaces. The experimental results, which are in good agreement with numerical simulations, demonstrate that the structure acts as a polarizer exhibiting an extinction ratio of (15:1) with a maximum transmission coefficient up to 85% which is more efficient …
When a sculptured thin film (STF), made of a metal and $\leq50$ nm thick, is used in lieu of a dense layer of metal in the Kretschmann configuration, experimental data for an STF comprising parallel tilted nanowires shows that a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can still be excited. As the porosity of the chosen STF increases, experimental data and numerical simulations indicate the SPR dip with respect to the angle of incidence of the exciting plane wave widens and eventually disappears, leaving behind a a vestigial peak near the onset to the total-internal-reflection regime.
We investigate the surface plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) in semi-infinite graphene sheet arrays. The surface soliton is formed as the SPPs tunneling is inhibited by the graphene nonlinearity, and meanwhile the incident power should be above a threshold value. Thanks to the strong confinement of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on graphene, the effective width of surface PLSs can be squeezed into deep-subwavelength scale of ~ 0.001λ. Based on the stable propagation of surface PLSs, we find that the light propagation can be switched from the array boundary to the inner graphene sheets by re…
Out-of-plane lattice plasmons (OLPs) supported by metallic nanoparticle arrays are promising for diverse applications due to their remarkably narrow linewidths and significant enhancement of local fields. Here we investigate the necessary conditions for metallic nanoparticle arrays to achieve OLPs. Our results show that, besides the prerequisites of large height, oblique incidence, and TM polarization, which have been pointed out by the literature; the array period should be properly designed within a limited range, the dielectric environment should be homogeneous, and the height and the angle…
We proposed an experimentally feasible scheme of nano-plamonic switch and quantum router via the single self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) with a V type three-level energy structure located between two silver metallic waveguides. We studied theoretically transmission and transfer rates of single plasmons in such a multi-ports system via the real-space approach, where our results showed that single plasmons from the input port could be switchable and redirected by controlling parameters, such as the intensity of the classical field, the detunings, and the interaction bet…
Two-dimensional double nanoparticles (DNPs) arrays are demonstrated theoretically supporting the interaction of out-of-plane magnetic plasmons and in-plane lattice resonances, which can be achieved by tuning the nanoparticle height or the array period due to the height-dependent magnetic resonance and the periodicity-dependent lattice resonance. The interplay of the two plasmon modes can lead to a remarkable change in resonance lineshape and an improvement of magnetic field enhancement. Simultaneous electric field and magnetic field enhancements can be obtained in the gap regions between neigh…
We study analytically and numerically an optical analogue of tachyon condensation in amplifying plasmonic arrays. Optical propagation is modeled through coupled-mode equations, which in the continuous limit can be converted into a nonlinear one-dimensional Dirac-like equation for fermionic particles with imaginary mass, i.e. fermionic tachyons. We demonstrate that the vacuum state is unstable and acquires an expectation value with broken chiral symmetry, corresponding to the homogeneous nonlinear stationary solution of the system. The quantum field theory analogue of this process is the conden…
We present optical investigations of rectangular surface plasmon polariton waveguides lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. The plasmon propagation length is directly determined using a confocal microscope, with independent polarization control in both excitation and detection channels. Surface plasmon polaritons are launched along the waveguide using a lithographically defined defect at one end. At the remote end of the waveguide they scatter into the far-field, where they are imaged using a CCD camera. By monitoring the length dependence of the intensity of scattered light from the wa…
Plasmon resonant arrays or meta-surfaces shape both the incoming optical field and the local density of states for emission processes. They provide large regions of enhanced emission from emitters and greater design flexibility than single nanoantennas. This makes them of great interest for engineering optical absorption and emission. Here we study the coupling of a single quantum emitter, a self-assembled semiconductor quantum dot, to a plasmonic meta-surface. We investigate the influence of the spectral properties of the nanoantennas and the position of the emitter in the unit cell of the st…
Plasmonic nanolasers have ultrahigh lasing thresholds, especially those devices for which all three dimensions are truly subwavelength. Because of a momentum mismatch between the propagating light and localized optical field of the subwavelength nanocavity, poor optical pumping efficiency is another important reason for the ultrahigh threshold but is normally always ignored. Based on a cavity-embedded nanoantenna array design, we demonstrate a room-temperature low-threshold plasmonic nanolaser that is robust, reproducible, and easy-to-fabricate using chemical-template lithography. The mode vol…
We propose to use collective lattice resonances in plasmonic nanoparticle arrays to enhance photoelectron emission in Schottky-barrier photodetectors and solar cells. We show that the interaction of lattice resonances (the Rayleigh anomaly) and individual particle excitations (localized surface plasmon resonances) leads to stronger local field enhancement and significant increase of the photocurrent compared to the case when only individual particle excitations are present. The results can be used to design new photodetectors with highly selective, tunable spectral response, able to detect pho…
We investigated theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the population dynamics and the absorption properties of a hybrid nanosystem composed of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a V-type three level semiconductor quantum dot (SQD), which are created by the interaction with the induced dipole moments in the SQD and the MNP, respectively. Excitons of the SQD and the plasmons of the MNP in such a hybrid nanosystem could be coupled strongly or weakly to demonstrate novel properties of the hybrid system. Our results show that the nonlinear optical response of the hybrid nanosystem can b…
Magnetic localized surface plasmons (LSPs) supported on metallic structures corrugated by very long and curved grooves have been recently proposed and demonstrated on an extremely thin metallic spiral structure (MSS) in the microwave regime. However, the mode profile for the magnetic LSPs was demonstrated by measuring only the electric field, not the magnetic field.
The propagation of plasmonic waves in various metallic quantum nanostructures have considered attention for their applications in technology. The quantum plasmonic properties of metallic nanostructures in the quantum size regime have been difficult to describe by an appropriate model. Here the nonlocal quantum plasmons are investigated in the most important metals of copper, gold, and silver. Dispersion properties of these metals and propagation of longitudinal quantum plasmons in the high photon energy regime are studied by a new model of nonlocal quantum dielectric permittivity. The epsilon …
A theoretical study of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in ultrathin lossy metal films is presented. The dispersion relation of such films is well known and can be solved numerically to obtain a combination of long-range (LR-) and short-range (SR-) eigenmodes. In this contribution, a simple solution for the SR-SPPs is derived. An approximation for the LR- eigenmodes can be found elsewhere. To validate the approximation, a two dimensional (2D) periodic array of small holes is studied subsequently. The spectral response of the array is obtained by full-wave simulations and the results compared …
A metallic film of arbitrary thickness is considered. We show that the problem of description of surface plasma oscillations (surface plasmons) with reflection boundary conditions allows analytic solution. Besides, this problem allows generalization for more general case of conducting matter (in particular, and for semiconductors).
Periodic arrays of metallic nanoparticles may sustain Surface Lattice Resonances (SLRs), which are collective resonances associated with the diffractive coupling of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPRs). By investigating a series of arrays with varying number of particles, we traced the evolution of SLRs to its origins. Polarization resolved extinction spectra of arrays formed by a few nanoparticles were measured, and found to be in very good agreement with calculations based on a coupled dipole model. Finite size effects on the optical properties of the arrays are observed, and our res…
We investigate the effect of disorder on the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in arrays of evanescently coupled dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides. Diagonal disorder is implemented by randomly varying the heights of the waveguides. Real-space as well as Fourier-space images of the surface plasmon polariton intensity distribution in the waveguide arrays are recorded by leakage radiation microscopy. With these techniques we experimentally demonstrate the transverse localization of surface plasmon polaritons with increasing disorder.
We predict an optical curtain effect, i.e., formation of a spatially invariant light field as light emerges from a set of periodic metallic nano-objects. The underlying physical mechanism of generation of this unique optical curtain can be explained in both the spatial domain and the wave-vector domain. In particular, in each period we use one metallic nanostrip to equate the amplitudes of lights impinging on the openings of two metallic nanoslits and also shift their phases by pi difference. We elaborate the influence on the output effect from some geometrical parameters like the periodicity,…
Magnetoplasmonics exploits interactions between light and magnetic matter at the nanoscale for light manipulation and resonant magneto-optics. One of the great challenges of this field is overcoming optical losses in magnetic metals. Here we exploit surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited at the interface of a SiO2/Au bilayer to induce strong magneto-optical responses on the Ni nanodisks of a periodic array. Using a reference system made of Au nanodisks, we show that optical losses in Ni do hardly broaden the linewidth of SPP-driven magneto-optical signals. Loss mitigation is attained becaus…
The plasmon oscillations in a cluster of two metallic nanospheres are studied theoretically. Particular attention is paid to the case of nearly touching spheres. Simple analytical expressions have been found for the spectra of plasmon oscillations of different symmetry in this case. A new type of the plasmon oscillations, which are strongly localized between the spheres, and which totally disappear at separation of the spheres, has been discovered. The found plasmon oscillations have a dramatic effect on optical properties of an atom localized between the spheres.
Absorption efficiency profiles and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths are reported for metallic core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) placed over a BK7 glass substrate. A numerical study is performed with the vectorized version of the discrete dipole approximation with surface interactions (DDA-SI-v). Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) metallic components are used for the simulations of two different core-shell structures. Absorption enhancement and the hybrid modes of plasmon resonances of the core-shell structures are compared by using a measure that defines a size configuration. It is o…
We demonstrate that the introduction of a subwavelength periodic modulation into a metallic structure strongly modifies the guiding characteristics of the surface plasmon modes supported by the system. Moreover, it is also shown how a new type of a tightly confined surface plasmon polariton mode can be created by just milling a periodic corrugation into a metallic ridge placed on top of a metal surface.
We discuss the possibility of implementing a novel bio-sensing platform based on the observation of the shift of the leaky surface plasmon mode that occurs at the edge of the plasmonic band gap of metal gratings when an analyte is deposited on top of the metallic structure. We provide experimental proof of the sensing capabilities of a two-dimensional array of gold nano-patches by observing color variations in the diffracted field when the air overlayer is replaced with a small quantity of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Effects of rounded corners and surface imperfections are also discussed. Finally…
We report on the strong coupling between inorganic quantum well excitons and surface plasmons. For that purpose a corrugated silver film was deposited on the top of a heterostructure consisting of GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells. The formation of plasmon/heavy-hole exciton/light-hole exciton mixed states is demonstrated with reflectometry experiments. The interaction energies amount to 21 meV for the plasmon/light-hole exciton and 22 meV for the plasmon/heavy-hole exciton. Some particularities of the plasmon-exciton coupling were also discussed and qualitatively related to the plasmon polarization.
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
The self-assembly of metallic colloidal clusters (so called plasmonic metamolecules) has been viewed as a versatile, but highly effective approach for the materialization of the metamaterials exhibiting artificial magnetism at optical frequencies (including visible and near infrared (NIR) regimes). Indeed, several proofs of concepts of plasmonic metamolecules have been successfully demonstrated in both theoretical and experimental ways. Nevertheless, this self-assembly strategy has barely been used and still remains an underutilized method. For example, the self-assembly and optical utilizatio…
We address the issue of the second-order coherence of single surface plasmons launched by a quantum source of light into extended gold films. The quantum source of light is made of a scanning fluorescent nanodiamond hosting five nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers. By using a specially designed microscopy that combines near-field optics with far-field leakage-radiation microscopy in the Fourier space and adapted spatial filtering, we find that the quantum statistics of the initial source of light is preserved after conversion to surface plasmons and propagation along the polycrystalline gold f…
The spontaneous emission of radiation of metallic electrons embedded in a high-intensity enhanced surface plasmon field is considered analytically. The electrons are described by exact dressed quantum states which contain the interaction with the plasmon field non-perturbatively. Considerable deviations from the pertubative behaviour have been found in the intensity dependence of the emitted fundamental and the second harmonic signals, even at moderate incoming laser intensities. The theoretical predictions deduced from the formalism are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental resu…
The optical properties of metallic tin nanoparticles embedded in silicon-based host materials were studied. Thin films containing the nanoparticles were produced using RF magnetron sputtering followed by ex situ heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the nanoparticle shape and size distribution; spherical, metallic tin nanoparticles were always found. The presence of a localized surface plasmon resonance in the nanoparticles was observed when SiO2 and amorphous silicon were the host materials. Optical spectroscopy revealed that the localized surface plasmon reso…
We predict theoretically that stable subwavelength plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) are formed in arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in a nonlinear medium. The tight confinement of the guiding modes of the metallic nanowires, combined with the strong nonlinearity induced by the enhanced field at the metal surface, provide the main physical mechanisms for balancing the wave diffraction and the formation of PLSs. As the conditions required for the formation of PLSs are satisfied in a variety of plasmonic systems, we expect these nonlinear modes to have important applications to subwavelength…
Recently, a new device to measure the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) electronic spectrum after elastic/inelastic scattering in a transmission electron microscope has been introduced. We modified the theoretical framework needed to describe conventional low loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments in transmission electron microscopes (TEM) to study surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures, to allow for an OAM post selection and devise new experiments for the analysis of these excitations in nanostructures. We found that unprecedented information on the symmetries and on the …
We study modulational instability in nonlinear arrays of subwavelength metallic nanoparticles, and analyze numerically nonlinear scenarios of the instability development. We demonstrate that modulational instability can lead to the formation of regular periodic or quasi-periodic modulations of the polarization. We reveal that such nonlinear nanoparticle arrays can support long-lived standing and moving oscillating nonlinear localized modes - plasmon oscillons.
Regular arrays of metal nanoparticles on metal films have tuneable optical resonances that can be applied for surface enhanced Raman scattering or biosensing. With the aim of developing more surface selective geometries we investigate regular gold nanoparticle arrays on 25nm thick gold films, which allow to excite asymmetric surface plasmon modes featuring a much better field confinement compared to the symmetric modes used in conventional surface plasmon resonance setups. By optical extinction spectroscopy we identify the plasmonic modes sustained by our structures. Furthermore, the role of t…
