We demonstrate that the introduction of a subwavelength periodic modulation into a metallic structure strongly modifies the guiding characteristics of the surface plasmon modes supported by the system. Moreover, it is also shown how a new type of a tightly confined surface plasmon polariton mode can be created by just milling a periodic corrugation into a metallic ridge placed on top of a metal surface.
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities can be tailored to display high Q-factors and extremely small mode volumes simultaneously, which results in large values of the Purcell factor, FP. Amongst the different hybrid configurations, those based on a nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic cavity provide one of the lowest mode volumes, though so far their operation has been constrained to wavelengths below 1 μm. Here, we propose a hybrid configuration consisting of a silicon photonic crystal cavity with a slot at its center in which a gold nanoparticle is introduced. This hybrid system operates at…
We report for the first time the bandgap engineering of Tamm plasmon photonic crystals - Tamm plasmon structures of which the metalic layer is periodically patterned into lattice of subwavelength period. By adopting a double period design, we evidenced experimentally a complete photonic bandgap up to $150\,nm$ in the telecom range. Moreover, such design offers a great flexibility to tailor on-demand, and independently, the band-gap size from $30\,nm$ to $150\,nm$ and its spectral position within $50\,nm$. Finally, by implementing a defect cavity within the Tamm plasmon photonic crystal, an ult…
Active nanoplasmonics has recently led to the emergence of many promising applications. One of them is spaser (surface plasmons amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) that has been shown to generate coherent and intense fields of selected surface plasmon modes that are strongly localized in the nanoscale. We propose a novel nanospaser composed of metal nanoparticles-graphene nanodisks hybrid plasmonic system as its resonator and a quantum dots cascade stack as its gain medium. We derive the plasmonic fields induced by pulsed excitation through the use of the effective medium theory…

Various optical phenomena can be induced in periodic arrays of nanoparticles by the radiative coupling of the local dipoles in each particle. Probably the most impressive example is bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are electromagnetic modes with a dispersion inside the light cone but infinite lifetime, i.e., modes that cannot leak to the continuum. Symmetry-protected BICs appear at highly symmetric points in the dispersion of periodic systems. Although the addition of nonequivalent lattice points in a unit cell is an easy and straightforward way of tuning the symmetry, BICs in such …
The effect of Anderson localization on surface plasmon polariton propagation and outward leakage when scattered by a randomly corrugated section of the interface
All-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of nanostructured high-refractive-index materials, typically Si, are re-writing what is achievable in terms of the manipulation of light. Such devices support very strong magnetic, as well as electric, resonances, and are free of ohmic losses that severely limit the performance of their plasmonic counterparts. However, the functionality of dielectric-based metasurfaces is fixed-by-design, i.e. the optical response is fixed by the size, arrangement and index of the nanoresonators. A far wider range of applications could be addressed if active/rec…
