In transition metal dichalcogenides layers of atomic scale thickness, the electron-hole Coulomb interaction potential is strongly influenced by the sharp discontinuity of the dielectric function across the layer plane. This feature results in peculiar non-hydrogenic excitonic states, in which exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities are predicted to be enhanced as compared to their hydrogenic counterpart. To demonstrate this enhancement, we performed optical transmission spectroscopy of a MoSe$_2$ monolayer placed in the strong coupling regime with the mode of an optical microcavity, and analyzed the results quantitatively with a nonlinear input-output theory. We find an enhancement of both the exciton-exciton interaction and of the excitonic fermionic saturation with respect to realistic values expected in the hydrogenic picture. Such results demonstrate that unconventional excitons in MoSe$_2$ are highly favourable for the implementation of large exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities, potentially working up to room temperature.
Excitons, quasi particles composed of an electron and a hole, play an important role in optical responses in low-dimensional nanostructures. In this work, we have investigated exciton diffusion in a monolayer MoSe2 encapsulated between flakes of hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN/MoSe2/hBN). Through PL imaging and numerical solving the 2D diffusion equation, we revealed that temperature dependence of exciton mobility in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN shows non-saturating increase at low temperature, which is qualitatively different from those of quantum wells composed of compound semiconductors. Ultraflat struc…
We present the micro-photoluminescence ($μ$PL) and micro-reflectance contrast spectroscopy studies on thin films of MoSe2 with layer thicknesses ranging from a monolayer (1L) up to 5L. The thickness dependent evolution of the ground and excited state excitonic transitions taking place at various points of the Brillouin zone is determined. Temperature activated energy shifts and linewidth broadenings of the excitonic resonances in 1L, 2L and 3L flakes are accounted for by using standard formalisms previously developed for semiconductors. A peculiar shape of the optical response of the ground st…
The strong excitonic effect in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors has enabled many fascinating light-matter interaction phenomena. Examples include strongly coupled exciton-polaritons and nearly perfect atomic monolayer mirrors. The strong light-matter interaction also opens the door for dynamical control of mechanical motion through the exciton resonance of monolayer TMDs. Here we report the observation of exciton-optomechanical coupling in a suspended monolayer MoSe2 mechanical resonator. By moderate optical pumping near the MoSe2 exciton resonance, we have observ…
Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are highly interesting for potential valleytronic applications due to the coupling of spin and valley degrees of freedom and valley-selective excitonic transitions. However, ultrafast recombination of excitons in these materials poses a natural limit for applications, so that a transfer of polarization to resident carriers is highly advantageous. Here, we study the low-temperature spin-valley dynamics in nominally undoped and n-doped MoSe$_2$ monolayers using time-resolved Kerr rotation. In the n-doped MoSe$_2$, we find a long-lived component of the K…
The optical spectra of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers are dominated by excitons and trions. Here we establish the dependences of these optical transitions on disorder from hyperspectral imaging of h-BN encapsulated monolayer MoSe2. While both exciton and trion energies vary spatially, these two quantities are almost perfectly correlated, with spatial variation in the trion binding energy of only ~0.18 meV. In contrast, variation in the energy splitting between the two lowest energy exciton states is one order of magnitude larger at ~1.7 meV. Statistical analysis and theoreti…
We study the impact of a free carrier reservoir on the optical properties of excitonic and trionic complexes in a MoSe$_2$ monolayer at cryogenic temperatures. By applying photodoping via a non-resonant pump laser the electron density can be controlled in our sample and in turn the exciton and trion densities can be tuned. We find a significant increase of the trion binding energy in the presence of an induced electron gas both in power- and in time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. This behaviour is reproduced within the original variational approach that takes into account both screening a…
Charged excitons called trions play an important role in the fundamental valley dynamics in the newly emerging 2D semiconductor materials. We used ultrafast pump- probe spectroscopy to study the valley trion dynamics in a MoSe$_2$ monolayer grown by using chemical vapor deposition. The dynamics display an ultrafast trion formation followed by a non-exponential decay. The measurements at different pump fluences show that the trion decay dynamics become slower as the excitation density increases. The observed trion dynamics and the associated density dependence are a result of the trapping by tw…
The valley pseudospin in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been proposed as a new way to manipulate information in various optoelectronic devices. This relies on a large valley polarization that remains stable over long timescales (hundreds of ns). However, time resolved measurements report valley lifetimes of only a few ps. This has been attributed to mechanisms such as phonon-mediated inter-valley scattering and a precession of the valley psedospin through electron-hole exchange. Here we use transient spin grating to directly measure the valley depolarization lifetime in …
Band gap tuning in two-dimensional transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is crucial in fabricating new optoelectronic devices. High resolution photoluminescence (PL) microscopy is needed for accurate band gap characterization. We performed tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) measurements of monolayer MoSe2 with nanoscale spatial resolution, providing an improved characterization of the band gap correlated with the topography compared with the conventional far field spectroscopy. We also observed PL shifts at the edges and investigated the spatial dependence of the TEPL enhancement factor…
Transition metal dichalcogenides are 2D structures with remarkable electronic, chemical, optical and mechanical properties. Monolayer and crystal properties of these structures have been extensively investigated, but a detailed understanding of the properties of their few-layer structures are still missing. In this work we investigated the mechanical differences between monolayer and multilayer WSe2 and MoSe2, through fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations (MD). It was observed that single layer WSe2/MoSe2 deposited on silicon substrates have larger friction coefficients than 2, 3 and …
We investigate valley exciton dynamics in MoSe2 monolayers in polarization- and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 4K. Following circularly polarized laser excitation, we record a low circular polarization degree of the PL of typically $\leq5\%$. This is about 10 times lower than the polarization induced under comparable conditions in MoS2 and WSe2 monolayers. The evolution of the exciton polarization as a function of excitation laser energy and power is monitored in PL excitation (PLE) experiments. Fast PL emission times are recorded for both the neutral exciton of $\leq3$ p…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, a new class of atomically thin semiconductors, possess optically coupled 2D valley excitons. The nature of exciton relaxation in these systems is currently poorly understood. Here, we investigate exciton relaxation in monolayer MoSe2 using polarization-resolved coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy with high spectral resolution. We report strikingly narrow population pulsation resonances with two different characteristic linewidths of 1 μeV and <0.2 μeV at low-temperature. These linewidths are more than three orders of magnitude narrower than the p…
We investigate the excitonic dynamics in MoSe2 monolayer and bulk samples by femtosecond transient absorption microscopy. Excitons are resonantly injected by a 750-nm and 100-fs laser pulse, and are detected by a probe pulse tuned in the range of 790 - 820 nm. We observe a strong density-dependent initial decay of the exciton population in monolayers, which can be well described by the exciton-exciton annihilation. Such a feature is not observed in the bulk under comparable conditions. We also observe the saturated absorption induced by exciton phase-space filling in both monolayers and the bu…
We report a photoluminescence (PL) and transient reflection spectroscopy study of exciton dynamics in monolayer transition transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). PL saturation in monolayer MoSe2 occurs an excitation intensity more than two orders of magnitude lower than in monolayer MoS2. Transient reflection shows that the nonlinear exciton-exciton annihilation is the dominant exciton decay process in monolayer MoSe2 in contrast to the previously reported linear exciton decay in monolayer MoS2. In addition, the exciton lifetime in MoSe2, > 125 ps, is more than an order of magnitude longer t…
The performance of electronic and spintronic devices based on two-dimensional semiconductors (2D SC) is largely dependent on the quality and resistance of the metal/SC electrical contacts, as well as preservation of the intrinsic properties of the SC channel. Direct Metal/SC interaction results in highly resistive contacts due to formation of large Schottky barriers and considerably affects the properties of the 2D SC. In this work, we address these two important issues in monolayer $\mathrm{MoSe_2}$ Field-Effect transistors (FETs). We encapsulate the $\mathrm{MoSe_2}$ channel with hexagonal B…
Magneto transmission spectroscopy was employed to study the valley Zeeman effect in large-area monolayer MoS$_{2}$ and MoSe$_{2}$. The extracted values of the valley g-factors for both A- and B-exciton were found be similar with $g_v \simeq -4.5$. The samples are expected to be strained due to the CVD growth on sapphire at high temperature ($700^\circ$C). However, the estimated strain, which is maximum at low temperature, is only $\simeq 0.2\%$. Theoretical considerations suggest that the strain is too small to significantly influence the electronic properties. This is confirmed by the measure…
Atomically thin materials, like semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (S-TMDs), are highly sensitive to the environment. This opens up an opportunity to externally control their properties by changing their surroundings. We investigate the effect of several metallic substrates on the optical properties of MoSe$_2$ monolayer (ML) deposited on top of them with photoluminescence and reflectance contrast techniques. The optical spectra of MoSe$_{2}$ MLs deposited on Pt, Au, Mo and Zr have distinctive metal-related lineshapes. In particular, a substantial variation in the intensity ratio …
The optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are dominated by both neutral excitons (electron-hole pairs) and charged excitons (trions) that are stable even at room temperature. While trions directly influence charge transport properties in optoelectronic devices, excitons may be relevant through exciton-trion coupling and conversion phenomena. In this work, we reveal the coherent and incoherent nature of exciton-trion coupling and the relevant timescales in monolayer MoSe2 using optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Coherent interaction between excitons a…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors such as MoSe$_2$ host strongly bound excitons which are known to exhibit a strong resonant third-order nonlinear response. Although there have been numerous studies of the ultrafast nonlinear response of monolayer TMDs, a study of the steady-state nonlinear response is lacking. We report a comprehensive study of the steady-state two-color nonlinear response of excitons in hBN-encapsulated monolayer MoSe$_2$ at 7 K. We observe differential transmission (DT) signals associated with the neutral and charged exciton species, which is st…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides display a strong excitonic optical response. Additionally encapsulating the monolayer with hexagonal boron nitride allows to reach the limit of a purely homogeneously broadened exciton system. On such a MoSe$_{2}$-based system we perform ultrafast six-wave mixing spectroscopy and find a novel destructive photon echo effect. This process manifests as a characteristic depression of the nonlinear signal dynamics when scanning the delay between the applied laser pulses. By theoretically describing the process within a local field model we reach an exc…
Monolayered MoSe2 is a promising new material to investigate advanced light-matter coupling as it hosts stable and robust excitons with comparably narrow optical resonances. In this work, we investigate the evolution of the lowest lying excitonic transition, the so-called A-valley exciton, with temperature. We find a strong, phonon-induced temperature broadening of the resonance, and more importantly, a reduction of the oscillator strength for increased temperatures. Based on these experimentally extracted, temperature dependent parameters, we apply a coupled oscillator model to elucidate the …
Monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are a strongly emergent platform for exploring quantum phenomena in condensed matter, building novel opto-electronic devices with enhanced functionalities. Due to their atomic thickness, their excitonic optical response is highly sensitive to their dielectric environment. In this work, we explore the optical properties of monolayer thick MoSe$_2$ straddling domain wall boundaries in periodically poled LiNbO$_3$. Spatially-resolved photoluminescence experiments reveal spatial sorting of charge and photo-generated neutral and charged …
Quantifying and controlling the coherent dynamics and couplings of optically active excitations in solids is of paramount importance in fundamental research in condensed matter optics and for their prospective optoelectronic applications in quantum technologies. Here, we perform ultrafast coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of a charge-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer. The experiments show that the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line width and the population decay of exciton complexes hosted by this material can be directly tuned by an applied gate bias, which governs the Fermi level and therefore the fr…
Modern electronic devices heavily rely on the accurate control of charge and spin of electrons. The emergence of controllable valley degree of freedom brings new possibilities and presents a promising prospect towards valleytronics. Recently, valley excitation selected by chiral optical pumping has been observed in monolayer MoS2. In this work, we report polarized photoluminescence (PL) measurements for monolayer MoSe2, another member of the family of transition-metal-dichalcogenides (MX2), and observe drastic difference from the outcomes of MoS2. In particular, we identify a valley polarizati…
Non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated systems constitutes a fascinating problem of condensed matter physics with many open questions. Here we investigate the relaxation dynamics of Landau-quantized electron system into spin-valley polarized ground state in a gate-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer subjected to a strong magnetic field. The system is driven out of equilibrium with optically injected excitons that depolarize the electron spins and the subsequent electron spin-valley relaxation is probed in time-resolved experiments. We demonstrate that the relaxation rate at millikelvin tempera…
In monolayer semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides, the exciton-phonon interaction is expected to strongly affect the photocarrier dynamics. Here, we report on an unusual oscillatory enhancement of the neutral exciton photoluminescence with the excitation laser frequency in monolayer MoSe2. The frequency of oscillation matches that of the M-point longitudinal acoustic phonon, LA(M). Oscillatory behavior is also observed in the steady-state emission linewidth and in timeresolved photoluminescence excitation data, which reveals variation with excitation energy in the exciton lifetime. T…
Excitons with binding energies of a few hundreds of meV control the optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Knowledge of the fine structure of these excitons is therefore essential to understand the optoelectronic properties of these 2D materials. Here we measure the exciton fine structure of MoS2 and MoSe2 monolayers encapsulated in boron nitride by magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 30 T. The experiments performed in transverse magnetic field reveal a brightening of the spin-forbidden dark excitons in MoS2 monolayer: we find that the dar…
Exciton intervalley scattering, annihilation and relaxation dynamics, and diffusive transport in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are central to the functionality of devices based on them. This motivated us to investigate these properties in exfoliated high-quality monolayer MoSe2 using heterodyned nonlinear four-wave-mixing transient grating spectroscopy. While free exciton excitations are found to be long-lived (~230 ps), an extremely fast intervalley scattering ( less than 120 fs) is observed leading to a negligible valley polarization, consistent with steady state photoluminesc…
We have measured circularly polarized photoluminescence in monolayer MoSe2 under perpendicular magnetic fields up to 10 T. At low doping densities, the neutral and charged excitons shift linearly with field strength at a rate of $\mp$ 0.12 meV/T for emission arising, respectively, from the K and K' valleys. The opposite sign for emission from different valleys demonstrates lifting of the valley degeneracy. The magnitude of the Zeeman shift agrees with predicted magnetic moments for carriers in the conduction and valence bands. The relative intensity of neutral and charged exciton emission is m…
Squeezing bubbles and impurities out of interlayer spaces by applying force through a few-layer graphene capping layer leads to van der Waals heterostructures with ultra-flat structure free from random electrostatic potential arising from charged impurities. Without the graphene capping layer, a squeezing process with an AFM tip induces applied-force-dependent charges of n ~ 2 x 10^12 cm^-2 uN^-1, resulting in strong intensity of trions in photoluminescence spectra of MoSe2 at low temperature. We found that a hBN/MoSe2/hBN prepared with the "modified nano-squeezing method" shows a strong excit…
Transition metal dichalcogenides represent an ideal testbed to study excitonic effects, spin-related phenomena and fundamental light-matter coupling in nanoscopic condensed matter systems. In particular, the valley degree of freedom, which is unique to such direct band gap monolayers with broken inversion symmetry, adds fundamental interest in these materials. Here, we implement a Tamm-plasmon structure with an embedded MoSe2 monolayer and study the formation of polaritonic quasi-particles. Strong coupling conditions between the Tamm-mode and the trion resonance of MoSe2 are established, yield…
The inherently low photoluminescence (PL) yields in as prepared transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are broadly accepted to be the result of atomic vacancies (i.e. defects) and uncontrolled doping, which give rise to non-radiative exciton decay pathways. To date, a number of chemical passivation schemes have been successfully developed to improve PL in sulphur based TMDs i.e. molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and tungsten disulphide (WS2) monolayers. Reports on solution based chemical passivation schemes for improving PL yields in selenium (Se) based TMDs are lacking I comparison, with…
Strong light matter coupling between excitons and microcavity photons, as described in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics, leads to the hybridization of light and matter excitations. The regime of collective strong coupling arises, when various excitations from different host media are strongly coupled to the same optical resonance. This leads to a well-controllable admixture of various matter components in three hybrid polariton modes. Here, we study a cavity device with four embedded GaAs quantum wells hosting excitons that are spectrally matched to the A-valley exciton resonanc…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, with versatile experimentally accessible exciton species, offer an interesting platform for investigating the interaction between excitons and a Fermi sea of charges. Using hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated monolayer MoSe2, we study the impact of charge density tuning on the ground and excited Rydberg states in the atomic layer. Consistent excitonpolaron behavior is revealed in both photoluminescence and reflection spectra of the A exciton 1s (A:1s) Rydberg state, in contrast to previous studies. The A:2s Rydberg state provides an op…
Advent of new materials such as van der Waals heterostructures, propels new research directions in condensed matter physics and enables development of novel devices with unique functionalities. Here, we show experimentally that a monolayer of MoSe2 embedded in a charge controlled heterostructure can be used to realize an electrically tunable atomically-thin mirror, that effects 90% extinction of an incident field that is resonant with its exciton transition. The corresponding maximum reflection coefficient of 45% is only limited by the ratio of the radiative decay rate to the linewidth of exci…
Monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with unique spin-valley contrasting properties and remarkably strong excitonic effects continue to be a subject of intense research interests. These model 2D semiconductors feature two fundamental intravalley excitons species - optically accessible ' bright' excitons with anti-parallel spins and optically inactive 'dark' excitons with parallel spins. For applications exploiting radiative recombination of bright excitons or long lifetime dark excitons, it is essential to understand the radiative character of the exciton groun…
We present a comprehensive optical study of the excitonic Zeeman effects in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, which are discussed comparatively for selected materials: MoSe$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$. We introduce a simple semi-phenomenological description of the magnetic field evolution of individual electronic states in fundamental sub-bands by considering three additive components: valley, spin and orbital terms. We corroborate the validity of the proposed description by inspecting the Zeeman-like splitting of neutral and charged excitonic resonances in absorption-type spectra. The v…
We report polarization-resolved resonant reflection spectroscopy of a charge-tunable atomically-thin valley semiconductor hosting tightly bound excitons coupled to a dilute system of fully spin- and valley-polarized holes in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We find that exciton-hole interactions manifest themselves in hole-density dependent, Shubnikov-de Haas-like oscillations in the energy and line broadening of the excitonic resonances. These oscillations are evidenced to be precisely correlated with the occupation of Landau levels, thus demonstrating that strong interactions between…
Transitions metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are direct semiconductors in the atomic monolayer (ML) limit with fascinating optical and spin-valley properties. The strong optical absorption of up to 20 % for a single ML is governed by excitons, electron-hole pairs bound by Coulomb attraction. Excited exciton states in MoSe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ monolayers have so far been elusive due to their low oscillator strength and strong inhomogeneous broadening. Here we show that encapsulation in hexagonal boron nitride results in emission line width of the A:1$s$ exciton below 1.5 meV and 3 meV in our MoSe$_2$ a…
Radiative recombination of excitons dressed by the interactions with free charge carriers often occurs under simultaneous excitation of either electrons or holes to unbound states. This phenomenon, known as the electron recoil effect, manifests itself in pronounced, asymmetric spectral lineshapes of the resulting emission. We study the electron recoil effect experimentally in electrically-tunable monolayer semiconductors and derive it theoretically using both trion and Fermi-polaron pictures. Time-resolved analysis of the recoil lineshapes is employed to access transient, non-equilibrium state…
Excitons in thin layers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are highly subject to the strongly modified Coulomb electron-hole interaction in these materials. Therefore, they do not follow the model system of a two-dimensional hydrogen atom. We investigate experimentally and theoretically excitonic properties in both the monolayer (ML) and the bilayer (BL) of MoSe$_2$ encapsulated in hexagonal BN. The measured magnetic field evolutions of the reflectance contrast spectra of the MoSe$_2$ ML and BL allow us to determine $g$-factors of intralayer A and B excitons, as well as the $g$…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene1, boron nitride2, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)3-5, have sparked wide interest in both device physics and technological applications at the atomic monolayer limit. These 2D monolayers can be stacked together with precise control to form novel van der Waals heterostructures for new functionalities2,6-9. One highly coveted but yet to be realized heterostructure is that of differing monolayer TMDs with type II band alignment10-12. Their application potential hinges on the fabrication, understanding, and control of bonded monolayers, w…
In atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), reduced dielectric screening of the Coulomb interaction leads to strongly correlated many-body states, including excitons and trions, that dominate the optical properties. Higher-order states, such as bound biexcitons, are possible but are difficult to identify unambiguously using linear optical spectroscopy methods alone. Here, we implement polarization-resolved two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy to unravel the complex optical response of monolayer MoSe$_2$ and identify multiple higher-order correlated states. Decisive signatures …
By implementing four-wave mixing (FWM) micro-spectroscopy we measure coherence and population dynamics of the exciton transitions in monolayers of MoSe$_2$. We reveal their dephasing times T$_2$ and radiative lifetime T$_1$ in a sub-picosecond (ps) range, approaching T$_2$=2T$_1$, and thus indicating radiatively limited dephasing at a temperature of 6$\,$K. We elucidate the dephasing mechanisms by varying the temperature and by probing various locations on the flake exhibiting a different local disorder. At a nanosecond range, we observe the residual FWM produced by the incoherent excitons, wh…
We study the electronic band structure in the K/K' valleys of the Brillouin zone of monolayer WSe2 and MoSe2 by optical reflection and photoluminescence spectroscopy on dual-gated field-effect devices. Our experiment reveals the distinct spin polarization in the conduction bands of these compounds by a systematic study of the doping dependence of the A and B excitonic resonances. Electrons in the highest-energy valence band and the lowest-energy conduction band have antiparallel spins in monolayer WSe2, and parallel spins in monolayer MoSe2. The spin splitting is determined to be hundreds of m…
We present a high-resolution resonance Raman study of hBN encapsulated MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers at 4 K using excitation energies from 1.6 eV to 2.25 eV. We report resonances with the WSe$_2$ A2s and MoSe$_2$ A2s and B2s excited Rydberg states despite their low oscillator strength. When resonant with the 2s states we identify new Raman peaks which are associated with intravalley scattering between different Rydberg states via optical phonons. By calibrating the Raman scattering efficiency and separately constraining the electric dipole matrix elements, we reveal that the scattering rates…
Screening due to surrounding dielectric medium reshapes the electron-hole interaction potential and plays a pivotal role in deciding the binding energies of strongly bound exciton complexes in quantum confined monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, owing to strong quasi-particle bandgap renormalization in such systems, a direct quantification of estimated shifts in binding energy in different dielectric media remains elusive using optical studies. In this work, by changing the dielectric environment, we show a conspicuous photoluminescence (PL) peak shift at low temper…
The research field of two dimensional (2D) materials strongly relies on optical microscopy characterization tools to identify atomically thin materials and to determine their number of layers. Moreover, optical microscopy-based techniques opened the door to study the optical properties of these nanomaterials. We presented a comprehensive study of the differential reflectance spectra of 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, with thickness ranging from one layer up to six layers. We analyzed the thickness-dependent energy of the different exciton…
Monolayers and multilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer an ideal platform to explore valley-selective physics with promising applications in valleytronics and information processing. Here we manipulate the energetic degeneracy of the $\mathrm{K}^+$ and $\mathrm{K}^-$ valleys in few-layer TMDCs. We perform high-field magneto-reflectance spectroscopy on WSe$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and MoTe$_2$ crystals of thickness from monolayer to the bulk limit under magnetic fields up to 30 T applied perpendicular to the sample plane. Because of a strong spin-layer locking, the gro…
Monolayers (MLs) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as WSe2 and MoSe2 can be placed by dry stamping directly on broadband dielectric resonators, which have the ability to enhance the spontaneous emission rate and brightness of solid-state emitters at room temperature. We show strongly enhanced emission and directivity modifications in room temperature photoluminescence mapping experiments. By varying TMD material (WSe2 versus MoSe2) transferred on silicon nanoresonators with various designs (planarized versus non-planarized), we experimentally separate the different physical mecha…
Nanoplasmonic systems combined with optically-active two-dimensional materials provide intriguing opportunities to explore and control light-matter interactions at extreme sub-wavelength lengthscales approaching the exciton Bohr radius. Here, we present room- and cryogenic-temperature investigations of light-matter interactions between an MoSe$_2$ monolayer and individual lithographically defined gold dipole nanoantennas having sub-10 nm feed gaps. By progressively tuning the nanoantenna size, their dipolar resonance is tuned relative to the A-exciton transition in a proximal MoSe$_2$ monolaye…
The bilayer heterostructures composed of an ultrathin ferromagnetic metal (FM) and a material hosting strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling are principal resource for SO torque and spin-to-charge conversion nonequilibrium effects in spintronics. We demonstrate how hybridization of wavefunctions of Co layer and a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)---such as semiconducting MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ or metallic TaSe$_2$---can lead to dramatic transmutation of electronic and spin structure of Co within some distance away from its interface with TMD, when compared to the bulk of Co or its su…
