A stability analysis of the Borel-Laplace series summation technique, used as explicit time integrator, is carried out. Its numerical performance on stiff and non-stiff problems is analyzed. Applications to ordinary and partial differential equations are presented. The results are compared with those of many popular schemes designed for stiff and non-stiff equations.

We introduce exponential numerical integration methods for stiff stochastic dynamical systems of the form $d\mathbf{z}_t = L(t)\mathbf{z}_tdt + \mathbf{f}(t)dt + Q(t)d\mathbf{W}_t$. We consider the setting of time-varying operators $L(t), Q(t)$ where they may not commute $L(t_1)L(t_2) \neq L(t_2)L(t_1)$, raising challenges for exponentiation. We develop stochastic numerical integration methods using Mangus expansions for preserving statistical structures and for maintaining fluctuation-dissipation balance for physical systems. For computing the contributions of the fluctuation terms, our metho…
We present a new linearly implicit exponential integrator that preserves the polynomial first integrals or Lyapunov functions for the conservative and dissipative stiff equations, respectively. The method is tested by both oscillated ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, e.g., an averaged system in wind-induced oscillation, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam systems, and the polynomial pendulum oscillators. The numerical simulations confirm the conservative properties of the proposed method and demonstrate its good behavior in superior running speed when compared with fully imp…
Exponential integrators are a well-known class of time integration methods that have been the subject of many studies and developments in the past two decades. Surprisingly, there have been limited efforts to analyze their stability and efficiency on non-diffusive equations to date. In this paper we apply linear stability analysis to showcase the poor stability properties of exponential integrators on non-diffusive problems. We then propose a simple repartitioning approach that stabilizes the integrators and enables the efficient solution of stiff, non-diffusive equations. To validate the effe…
In this paper, we propose a $μ$-mode integrator for computing the solution of stiff evolution equations. The integrator is based on a $d$-dimensional splitting approach and uses exact (usually precomputed) one-dimensional matrix exponentials. We show that the action of the exponentials, i.e. the corresponding batched matrix-vector products, can be implemented efficiently on modern computer systems. We further explain how $μ$-mode products can be used to compute spectral transforms efficiently even if no fast transform is available. We illustrate the performance of the new integrator by solving…
Explicit stabilized integrators are an efficient alternative to implicit or semi-implicit methods to avoid the severe timestep restriction faced by standard explicit integrators applied to stiff diffusion problems. In this paper, we provide a fully discrete strong convergence analysis of a family of explicit stabilized methods coupled with finite element methods for a class of parabolic semilinear deterministic and stochastic partial differential equations. Numerical experiments including the semilinear stochastic heat equation with space-time white noise confirm the theoretical findings.
From efficient symplectic exponentiation of matrices to symplectic integration of high-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with slowly varying quadratic stiff potentials
A single-step high-order implicit time integration scheme for the solution of transient and wave propagation problems is presented. It is constructed from the Padé expansions of the matrix exponential solution of a system of first-order ordinary differential equations formulated in the state-space. A computationally efficient scheme is developed exploiting the techniques of polynomial factorization and partial fractions of rational functions, and by decoupling the solution for the displacement and velocity vectors. An important feature of the novel algorithm is that no direct inversion of the …
The efficient numerical solution of many kinetic models in plasma physics is impeded by the stiffness of these systems. Exponential integrators are attractive in this context as they remove the CFL condition induced by the linear part of the system, which in practice is often the most stringent stability constraint. In the literature, these schemes have been found to perform well, e.g., for drift-kinetic problems. Despite their overall efficiency and their many favorable properties, most of the commonly used exponential integrators behave rather erratically in terms of the allowed time step si…
