The propagation of chaos property for a system of interacting particles, describing the spatial evolution of a network of interacting filaments is studied. The creation of a network of mycelium is analyzed as representative case, and the generality of the modeling choices are discussed. Convergence of the empirical density for the particle system to its mean field limit is proved, and a result of regularity for the solution is presented.
We establish a central limit theorem for the unnormalized linear statistic of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble under optimal conditions: the linear statistics converges if and only if the expression for the limiting variance is finite.
We consider backward stochastic differential equations with drivers of quadratic growth (qgBSDE). We prove several statements concerning path regularity and stochastic smoothness of the solution processes of the qgBSDE, in particular we prove an extension of Zhang's path regularity theorem to the quadratic growth setting. We give explicit convergence rates for the difference between the solution of a qgBSDE and its truncation, filling an important gap in numerics for qgBSDE. We give an alternative proof of second order Malliavin differentiability for BSDE with drivers that are Lipschitz contin…
We investigate the weak order of convergence for space-time discrete approximations of semilinear parabolic stochastic evolution equations driven by additive square-integrable Lévy noise. To this end, the Malliavin regularity of the solution is analyzed and recent results on refined Malliavin-Sobolev spaces from the Gaussian setting are extended to a Poissonian setting. For a class of path-dependent test functions, we obtain that the weak rate of convergence is twice the strong rate.
We propose a "decomposition method" to prove non-asymptotic bound for the convergence of empirical measures in various dual norms. The main point is to show that if one measures convergence in duality with sufficiently regular observables, the convergence is much faster than for, say, merely Lipschitz observables. Actually, assuming $s$ derivatives with $s < d/2$ ($d$ the dimension) ensures an optimal rate of convergence of $1/\sqrt{n}$ ($n$ the number of samples). The method is flexible enough to apply to Markov chains which satisfy a geometric contraction hypothesis, assuming neither station…
In [18] Fournier and Printems establish a methodology which allows to prove the absolute continuity of the law of the solution of some stochastic equations with Hölder continuous coefficients. This is of course out of reach by using already classical probabilistic methods based on Malliavin calculus. In [11] Debussche and Romito employ some Besov space technics in order to substantially improve the result of Fournier and Printems. In our paper we show that this kind of problem naturally fits in the framework of interpolation spaces: we prove an interpolation inequality (see Proposition 2.5) wh…
We study the regularity of a diffusion on a simplex with singular drift and reflecting boundary condition which describes a finite system of particles on an interval with Coulomb interaction and reflection between nearest neighbors. As our main result we establish the Feller property for the process in both cases of repulsion and attraction. In particular the system can be started from any initial state, including multiple point configurations. Moreover we show that the process is a Euclidean semi-martingale if and only if the interaction is repulsive. Hence, contrary to classical results abou…
These lecture notes grew out of a series of lectures given by the second named author in short courses in Toulouse, Matsumoto, and Darmstadt. The main aim is to explain some aspects of the theory of "Regularity structures" developed recently by Hairer in arXiv:1303.5113 . This theory gives a way to study well-posedness for a class of stochastic PDEs that could not be treated previously. Prominent examples include the KPZ equation as well as the dynamic $Φ^4_3$ model. Such equations can be expanded into formal perturbative expansions. Roughly speaking the theory of regularity structures provide…
Self-interacting diffusions are processes living on a compact Riemannian manifold defined by a stochastic differential equation with a drift term depending on the past empirical measure of the process. The asymptotics of this measure is governed by a deterministic dynamical system and under certain conditions it converges almost surely towards a deterministic measure (see Benaïm, Ledoux, Raimond (2002) and Benaïm, Raimond (2005)). We are interested here in the rate of this convergence. A central limit theorem is proved. In particular, this shows that greater is the interaction repelling faster…
Symmetric heavily tailed random walks on $Z^d, d\geq 1,$ are considered. Under appropriate regularity conditions on the tails of the jump distributions, global (i.e., uniform in $x,t, |x|+t\to\infty,$) asymptotic behavior of the transition probability $p(t,0,x)$ is obtained. The examples indicate that the regularity conditions are essential.
Using Zvonkin's transform and the Poisson equation in $R^d$ with a parameter, we prove the averaging principle for stochastic differential equations with time-dependent Hölder continuous coefficients. Sharp convergence rates with order $(α\wedge1)/2$ in the strong sense and $(α/2)\wedge1$ in the weak sense are obtained, considerably extending the existing results in the literature. Moreover, we prove that the convergence of the multi-scale system to the effective equation depends only on the regularity of the coefficients of the equation for the slow variable, and does not depend on the regula…
In this paper, we consider particle systems with interaction and Brownian motion. We prove that when the initial data is from the sampling of Chorin's method, i.e., the initial vertices are on lattice points $hi\in \mathbb{R}^d$ with mass $ρ_0(hi) h^d$, where $ρ_0$ is some initial density function, then the regularized empirical measure of the interacting particle system converges in probability to the corresponding mean-field partial differential equation with initial density $ρ_0$, under the Sobolev norm of $L^\infty(L^2)\cap L^2(H^1)$. Our result is true for all those systems when the inter…
We show the convergence of finite state symmetric N-player differential games, where players control their transition rates from state to state, to a limiting dynamics given by a finite state Mean Field Game system made of two coupled forward-backward ODEs. We exploit the so-called Master Equation, which in this finite-dimensional framework is a first order PDE in the simplex of probability measures, obtaining the convergence of the feedback Nash equilibria, the value functions and the optimal trajectories. The convergence argument requires only the regularity of a solution to the Master equat…
We use generalized Ray-Knight theorems introduced by Bálint Tóth in 1996 together with techniques developed for excited random walks as main tools for establishing positive and negative results concerning convergence of some classes of diffusively scaled self-interacting random walks (SIRWs) to Brownian motions perturbed at extrema (BMPE). Tóth's work studied two classes of SIRWs: asymptotically free and polynomially self-repelling walks. For both classes Toth has shown, in particular, that the distribution function of a scaled SIRW observed at independent geometric times converges to that of …
We study large deviation properties of systems of weakly interacting particles modeled by Itô stochastic differential equations (SDEs). It is known under certain conditions that the corresponding sequence of empirical measures converges, as the number of particles tends to infinity, to the weak solution of an associated McKean-Vlasov equation. We derive a large deviation principle via the weak convergence approach. The proof, which avoids discretization arguments, is based on a representation theorem, weak convergence and ideas from stochastic optimal control. The method works under rather mil…
This paper focuses on the construction and analysis of explicit numerical methods of high dimensional stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equations (SNLSEs). We first prove that the classical explicit numerical methods are unstable and suffer from the numerical divergence phenomenon. Then we propose a kind of explicit splitting numerical methods and prove that the structure-preserving splitting strategy is able to enhance the numerical stability. Furthermore, we establish the regularity analysis and strong convergence analysis of the proposed schemes for SNLSEs based on two key ingredients. One i…
We introduce a new method for obtaining quantitative results in stochastic homogenization for linear elliptic equations in divergence form. Unlike previous works on the topic, our method does not use concentration inequalities (such as Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space) and relies instead on a higher ($C^{k}$, $k \geq 1$) regularity theory for solutions of the heterogeneous equation, which is valid on length scales larger than a certain specified mesoscopic scale. This regularity theory, which is of independent interest, allows us to, in effect, localize the…
The convergence of U-statistics has been intensively studied for estimators based on families of i.i.d. random variables and variants of them. In most cases, the independence assumption is crucial [Lee90, de99]. When dealing with Feynman-Kac and other interacting particle systems of Monte Carlo type, one faces a new type of problem. Namely, in a sample of N particles obtained through the corresponding algorithms, the distributions of the particles are correlated -although any finite number of them is asymptotically independent with respect to the total number N of particles. In the present art…
We consider a stochastic particle system in which a finite number of particles interact with one another via a common energy tank. Interaction rate for each particle is proportional to the square root of its kinetic energy, as is consistent with analogous mechanical models. Our main result is that the rate of convergence to equilibrium for such a system is $\sim t^{-2}$, more precisely it is faster than a constant times $t^{-2+\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon>0$. A discussion of exponential vs polynomial convergence for similar particle systems is included.
In this paper, we derive fully implementable first order time-stepping schemes for McKean--Vlasov stochastic differential equations (McKean--Vlasov SDEs), allowing for a drift term with super-linear growth in the state component. We propose Milstein schemes for a time-discretised interacting particle system associated with the McKean--Vlasov equation and prove strong convergence of order 1 and moment stability, taming the drift if only a one-sided Lipschitz condition holds. To derive our main results on strong convergence rates, we make use of calculus on the space of probability measures with…
We consider extended slow-fast systems of N interacting diffusions. The typical behavior of the empirical density is described by a nonlinear McKean-Vlasov equation depending on , the scaling parameter separating the time scale of the slow variable from the time scale of the fast variable. Its atypical behavior is encapsulated in a large N Large Deviation Principle (LDP) with a rate functional. We study the $Γ$-convergence of as $\rightarrow$ 0 and show it converges to the rate functional appearing in the Macroscopic Fluctuations Theory (MFT) for diffusive systems.
We consider a countably generated and uniformly closed algebra of bounded functions. We assume that there is a lower semicontinuous, with respect to the supremum norm, quadratic form and that normal contractions operate in a certain sense. Then we prove that a subspace of the effective domain of the quadratic form is naturally isomorphic to a core of a regular Dirichlet form on a locally compact separable metric space. We also show that any Dirichlet form on a countably generated measure space can be approximated by essentially discrete Dirichlet forms, i.e. energy forms on finite weighted gra…
