We perform the UV deformation of the Green's function in free scalar field theory using a discrete heat kernel method. It is found that the simplest UV deformation based on the discretized diffusion equation leads to the well-known Pauli-Villars effective Lagrangian. Furthermore, by extending assumptions on the discretized equation, we find that the general higher derivative theory is derived from the present UV deformation. In some specific cases, we also calculate the vacuum expectation values of the scalar field squared in nontrivial background spaces and examine their dependence on the UV cutoff constant.
Given a number field $K$ with a Hecke character $χ$, for each place $ν$ we study the free scalar field theory whose kinetic term is given by the regularized Vladimirov derivative associated to the local component of $χ$. These theories appear in the study of $p$-adic string theory and $p$-adic AdS/CFT correspondence. We prove a formula for the regularized Vladimirov derivative in terms of the Fourier conjugate of the local component of $χ$. We find that the Green's function is given by the local functional equation for Zeta integrals. Furthermore, considering all places $ν$, the field theory t…
We solve the non-local equation ${-e^{-\ell^2\square}\squareϕ=J}$ for i) static scalar fields in static spacetimes and ii) time-dependent scalar fields in ultrastatic spacetimes. Corresponding equations are rewritten as non-local Poisson/inhomogeneous Helmholtz equations in compact and non-compact weighted/Riemannian manifolds using static/frequency-domain Green's functions, which can be computed from the heat kernels in the respective manifolds. With the help of the heat kernel estimates, we derive the static Green's function estimates and use them to discuss the regularity. We also present s…
In this work, we study the thermodynamic properties of a photon gas in a heat bath within the context of higher-derivative electrodynamics. Specifically, we analyze Podolsky's theory and its extension involving the Lorentz symmetry violation recently proposed in the literature. First, we use the concept of the number of available states of the system in order to construct the partition function. Next, we calculate the main thermodynamic functions: Helmholtz free energy, mean energy, entropy, and heat capacity. In particular, we verify that there exist significant changes in heat capacity and m…
We consider different methods of calculating the (fractional) fermion number of solitons based on the heat kernel expansion. We derive a formula for the localized eta function a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral assymmetry and that provides a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral asymmetry and compute the fermion number in a multiflavour extension of the Goldstone-Wilczek model. We also propose an improved expansionof the heat kernelthat allows the tackling ofthe convergence issues and permits an automated computation of the coefficients
We consider the heat kernel for higher-derivative and nonlocal operators in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space-time and its asymptotic behavior. As a building block for operators of such type, we consider the heat kernel of the minimal operator - generic power of the Laplacian - and show that it is given by the expression essentially different from the conventional exponential Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) ansatz. Rather it is represented by the generalized exponential function (GEF) directly related to what is known in mathematics as the Fox-Wright $\varPsi$-functions and Fox $H$-functions. Th…
