This paper introduces the pipeline to extend the largest dataset in egocentric vision, EPIC-KITCHENS. The effort culminates in EPIC-KITCHENS-100, a collection of 100 hours, 20M frames, 90K actions in 700 variable-length videos, capturing long-term unscripted activities in 45 environments, using head-mounted cameras. Compared to its previous version, EPIC-KITCHENS-100 has been annotated using a novel pipeline that allows denser (54% more actions per minute) and more complete annotations of fine-grained actions (+128% more action segments). This collection enables new challenges such as action detection and evaluating the "test of time" - i.e. whether models trained on data collected in 2018 can generalise to new footage collected two years later. The dataset is aligned with 6 challenges: action recognition (full and weak supervision), action detection, action anticipation, cross-modal retrieval (from captions), as well as unsupervised domain adaptation for action recognition. For each challenge, we define the task, provide baselines and evaluation metrics

We are interested in anticipating as early as possible the target location of a person's object manipulation action in a 3D workspace from egocentric vision. It is important in fields like human-robot collaboration, but has not yet received enough attention from vision and learning communities. To stimulate more research on this challenging egocentric vision task, we propose a large multimodality dataset of more than 1 million frames of RGB-D and IMU streams, and provide evaluation metrics based on our high-quality 2D and 3D labels from semi-automatic annotation. Meanwhile, we design baseline …

Equipping visitors of a cultural site with a wearable device allows to easily collect information about their preferences which can be exploited to improve the fruition of cultural goods with augmented reality. Moreover, egocentric video can be processed using computer vision and machine learning to enable an automated analysis of visitors' behavior. The inferred information can be used both online to assist the visitor and offline to support the manager of the site. Despite the positive impact such technologies can have in cultural heritage, the topic is currently understudied due to the limi…
We present a new method to localize a camera within a previously unseen environment perceived from an egocentric point of view. Although this is, in general, an ill-posed problem, humans can effortlessly and efficiently determine their relative location and orientation and navigate into a previously unseen environments, e.g., finding a specific item in a new grocery store. To enable such a capability, we design a new egocentric representation, which we call ECO (Egocentric COgnitive map). ECO is biologically inspired, by the cognitive map that allows human navigation, and it encodes the surrou…

First-person vision is gaining interest as it offers a unique viewpoint on people's interaction with objects, their attention, and even intention. However, progress in this challenging domain has been relatively slow due to the lack of sufficiently large datasets. In this paper, we introduce EPIC-KITCHENS, a large-scale egocentric video benchmark recorded by 32 participants in their native kitchen environments. Our videos depict nonscripted daily activities: we simply asked each participant to start recording every time they entered their kitchen. Recording took place in 4 cities (in North Ame…
Egocentric segmentation has attracted recent interest in the computer vision community due to their potential in Mixed Reality (MR) applications. While most previous works have been focused on segmenting egocentric human body parts (mainly hands), little attention has been given to egocentric objects. Due to the lack of datasets of pixel-wise annotations of egocentric objects, in this paper we contribute with a semantic-wise labeling of a subset of 2124 images from the RGB-D THU-READ Dataset. We also report benchmarking results using Thundernet, a real-time semantic segmentation network, that …

Although First Person Vision systems can sense the environment from the user's perspective, they are generally unable to predict his intentions and goals. Since human activities can be decomposed in terms of atomic actions and interactions with objects, intelligent wearable systems would benefit from the ability to anticipate user-object interactions. Even if this task is not trivial, the First Person Vision paradigm can provide important cues to address this challenge. We propose to exploit the dynamics of the scene to recognize next-active-objects before an object interaction begins. We trai…

Mild cognitive impairment is the early stage of several neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's. In this work, we address the use of lifelogging as a tool to obtain pictures from a patient's daily life from an egocentric point of view. We propose to use them in combination with serious games as a way to provide a non-pharmacological treatment to improve their quality of life. To do so, we introduce a novel computer vision technique that classifies rich and non rich egocentric images and uses them in serious games. We present results over a dataset composed by 10,997 images, recorded by…

Egocentric videos offer fine-grained information for high-fidelity modeling of human behaviors. Hands and interacting objects are one crucial aspect of understanding a viewer's behaviors and intentions. We provide a labeled dataset consisting of 11,243 egocentric images with per-pixel segmentation labels of hands and objects being interacted with during a diverse array of daily activities. Our dataset is the first to label detailed hand-object contact boundaries. We introduce a context-aware compositional data augmentation technique to adapt to out-of-distribution YouTube egocentric video. We …
We introduce a new pipeline for hand localization and fingertip detection. For RGB images captured from an egocentric vision mobile camera, hand and fingertip detection remains a challenging problem due to factors like background complexity and hand shape variety. To address these issues accurately and robustly, we build a large scale dataset named Ego-Fingertip and propose a bi-level cascaded pipeline of convolutional neural networks, namely, Attention-based Hand Detector as well as Multi-point Fingertip Detector. The proposed method significantly tackles challenges and achieves satisfactoril…

Wearable cameras allow to collect images and videos of humans interacting with the world. While human-object interactions have been thoroughly investigated in third person vision, the problem has been understudied in egocentric settings and in industrial scenarios. To fill this gap, we introduce MECCANO, the first dataset of egocentric videos to study human-object interactions in industrial-like settings. MECCANO has been acquired by 20 participants who were asked to build a motorbike model, for which they had to interact with tiny objects and tools. The dataset has been explicitly labeled for…

We consider the problem of detecting Egocentric HumanObject Interactions (EHOIs) in industrial contexts. Since collecting and labeling large amounts of real images is challenging, we propose a pipeline and a tool to generate photo-realistic synthetic First Person Vision (FPV) images automatically labeled for EHOI detection in a specific industrial scenario. To tackle the problem of EHOI detection, we propose a method that detects the hands, the objects in the scene, and determines which objects are currently involved in an interaction. We compare the performance of our method with a set of sta…

Recent technological advances have made lightweight, head mounted cameras both practical and affordable and products like Google Glass show first approaches to introduce the idea of egocentric (first-person) video to the mainstream. Interestingly, the computer vision community has only recently started to explore this new domain of egocentric vision, where research can roughly be categorized into three areas: Object recognition, activity detection/recognition, video summarization. In this paper, we try to give a broad overview about the different problems that have been addressed and collect a…

We analyze egocentric views of attended objects from infants. This paper shows 1) empirical evidence that children's egocentric views have more diverse distributions compared to adults' views, 2) we can computationally simulate the infants' distribution, and 3) the distribution is beneficial for training more generalized image classifiers not only for infant egocentric vision but for third-person computer vision.

Egocentric vision technology consists in capturing the actions of persons from their own visual point of view using wearable camera sensors. We apply this new paradigm to instrumental activities monitoring with the objective of providing new tools for the clinical evaluation of the impact of the disease on persons with dementia. In this paper, we introduce the current state of the development of this technology and focus on two technology modules: automatic location estimation and visual saliency estimation for content interpretation.

Egocentric vision holds great promises for increasing access to visual information and improving the quality of life for people with visual impairments, with object recognition being one of the daily challenges for this population. While we strive to improve recognition performance, it remains difficult to identify which object is of interest to the user; the object may not even be included in the frame due to challenges in camera aiming without visual feedback. Also, gaze information, commonly used to infer the area of interest in egocentric vision, is often not dependable. However, blind use…

Inspired by the remarkable ability of the infant visual learning system, a recent study collected first-person images from children to analyze the `training data' that they receive. We conduct a follow-up study that investigates two additional directions. First, given that infants can quickly learn to recognize a new object without much supervision (i.e. few-shot learning), we limit the number of training images. Second, we investigate how children control the supervision signals they receive during learning based on hand manipulation of objects. Our experimental results suggest that supervisi…
