In Eu2ZnIrO6, effectively two atoms are active i.e. Ir is magnetically active, which results in complex magnetic ordering within the Ir sublattice at low temperature. On the other hand, although Eu is a van-vleck paramagnet, it is active in the electronic channels involving 4f 6 crystal-field split levels. Phonons, quanta of lattice vibration, involving vibration of atoms in the unit cell, are intimately coupled with both magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom (DoF). Here, we report a comprehensive study focusing on the phonons as well as intra-configurational excitations in double-perovskite Eu2ZnIrO6. Our studies reveal strong coupling of phonons with the underlying magnetic DoF reflected in the renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters well above the spin-solid phase (TN ~ 12 K) till temperature as high as ~ 3TN, evidences broken spin rotational symmetry deep into the paramagnetic phase. In particular, all the observed first-order phonon modes show softening of varying degree below ~3TN, and low-frequency phonons become sharper, while the high-frequency phonons show broadening attributed to the additional available magnetic damping channels. We also observed a large number of high-energy modes, 39 in total, attributed to the electronic transitions between 4f-levels of the rare-earth Eu3+ ion and these modes shows anomalous temperature evolution as well as mixing of the crystal-field split levels attributed to the strong coupling of electronic and lattice DoF.
We develop a structured theoretical framework used in our recent articles [Eur. Phys. J. B 92, 93 (2019) and Phys. Rev. B 101, 094427 (2020)] to characterize the unusual behavior of the magnetic spectrum, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of the molecular magnet Ni$_4$Mo$_{12}$. The theoretical background is based on the molecular orbital theory in conjunction with the multi-configurational self-consistent field method and results in a post-Hartree-Fock scheme for constructing the corresponding energy spectrum. Furthermore, we construct a bilinear spin-like Hamiltonian involving discre…
We report comprehensive Raman-scattering measurements on a single crystal of double-perovskite Nd2ZnIrO6 in temperature range of 4-330 K, and spanning a broad spectral range from 20 cm-1 to 5500 cm-1. The paper focuses on lattice vibrations and electronic transitions involving Kramers doublets of the rare-earth Nd3+ ion with local C1 site symmetry. Temperature evolution of these quasi-particle excitations have allowed us to ascertain the intricate coupling between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom in Nd2ZnIrO6. Strong coupling between phonons and crystal-field excitation is observed vi…
Transformation of Coulomb interaction terms to the pseudo-orbital basis constituted by $J=1/2$ and $3/2$ states arising from spin-orbit coupling provides a versatile tool. This formalism is applied to investigate magnetic anisotropy effects on low-energy spin-wave excitations as well as high-energy spin-orbit exciton modes in $\rm Sr_2 Ir O_4$. The Hund's coupling term explictly yields easy-plane anisotropy, resulting in gapless (in-plane) and gapped (out-of-plane) modes, in agreement with recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements. The collective mode of inter-orbital, spi…
Inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed in an S=3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) at ambient and high magnetic fields. Relatively broad and monotonically dispersive magnetic excitations were observed at ambient field, where no long range magnetic order exists. In the magnetic field-induced long-range ordered state at 10 T, the magnetic dispersions become slightly more intense, albeit still broad as in the disordered state, and two excitation gaps, probably originating from an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and intrabilayer interactions, develop. Analyzing the …
We investigate magnetic excitations in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$ by inelastic neutron scattering. In the magnetically ordered ground state, the excitation spectrum exhibits coexisting magnon dispersion, characteristic of long-range magnetic order, and a spinon-like continuum that prevails above 2 meV, indicating the dominance of intrachain interactions. Combining linear-spin-wave-theory and pre-calculated spinon-continuum results, we reproduce the experimental spectrum. Our analysis offers a minimal exchange-network model which determines dominant intrachain in…
We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study on CrI3 single crystals by employing the polarization dependence of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Our investigations reveal multiple Cr 3d orbital splitting (dd excitations) as well as magnetic dichroism (MD) in the RIXS spectra which is evidence of spin-flip in the dd excitation. Interestingly, the dd excitation energies are similar on both sides of the ferromagnetic transition temperature, TC of 61 K, although MD in RIXS is predominant at 0.4 tesla magnetic field below TC. This demonstrates that the ferromagnetic supere…
We present a theoretical study of the elementary electronic excitation associated with plasmon modes in a two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) in the presence of spin-orbit (SO) interaction induced by the Rashba effect. The calculation is carried out using a standard random-phase-approximation approach. It is found that in such a spintronic system, plasmon excitation can be achieved via intra- and inter-SO electronic transitions around the Fermi level. As a result, the intra- and inter-SO plasmon modes can be observed. More importantly, the plasmon modes induced by inter-SO transition are optic-lik…
