Although the first lasers invented operated in the visible, the first on-chip devices were optimized for near-infrared (IR) performance driven by demand in telecommunications. However, as the applications of integrated photonics has broadened, the wavelength demand has as well, and we are now returning to the visible (Vis) and pushing into the ultraviolet (UV). This shift has required innovations in device design and in materials as well as leveraging nonlinear behavior to reach these wavelengths. This review discusses the key nonlinear phenomena that can be used as well as presents several emerging material systems and devices that have reached the UV-Vis wavelength range.
Optical frequency comb is an enabling technology for a multitude of applications from metrology to ranging and communications. The tremendous progress in sources of optical frequency combs has mostly been centered around the near-infrared spectral region while many applications demand sources in the visible and mid-infrared, which have so far been challenging to achieve, especially in nanophotonics. Here, we report frequency combs tunable from visible to mid-infrared on a single chip based on ultra-widely tunable optical parametric oscillators in lithium niobate nanophotonics. Using picosecond…
The on-chip creation of coherent light at visible wavelengths is crucial to field-level deployment of spectroscopy and metrology systems. Although on-chip lasers have been implemented in specific cases, a general solution that is not restricted by limitations of specific gain media has not been reported. Here, we propose creating visible light from an infrared pump by widely-separated optical parametric oscillation (OPO) using silicon nanophotonics. The OPO creates signal and idler light in the 700 nm and 1300 nm bands, respectively, with a 900 nm pump. It operates at a threshold power of (0.9…
The ability to spectrally translate lightwave signals in a compact, low-power platform is at the heart of the promise of nonlinear nanophotonic technologies. For example, a device to link the telecommunications band with visible and short near-infrared wavelengths can enable a connection between high-performance chip-integrated lasers based on scalable nanofabrication technology with atomic systems used for time and frequency metrology. While second-order nonlinear (χ^(2)) systems are the natural approach for bridging such large spectral gaps, here we show that third-order nonlinear (chi^(3)) …
Using the ultraviolet autofluorescence of tryptophan aminoacids offers fascinating perspectives to study single proteins without the drawbacks of fluorescence labelling. However, the low autofluorescence signals have so far limited the UV detection to large proteins containing several tens of tryptophan residues. This limit is not compatible with the vast majority of proteins which contain only a few tryptophans. Here we push the sensitivity of label-free ultraviolet fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (UV-FCS) down to the single tryptophan level. Our results show how the combination of nano…
We demonstrate Anderson localisation of visible light on a chip and report quality factors exceeding highly engineered two-dimensional cavities. Our results reverse the trend, observed so far, of the quality of disorder-induced light confinement being orders of magnitude lower than engineered devices. Furthermore, by implementing a sensitive imaging technique, we directly visualise the localised modes, determine their position on the device and measure their spatial extension. Our findings prove the potential of disorder-induced localised light for scalable, room temperature, optical devices, …
All-dielectric nanoantennas have recently opened exciting opportunities for functional nanophotonics, owing to their strong optical resonances along with low material loss in the near-infrared range. Pushing these concepts to the visible range is hindered by a larger absorption coefficient of Si and other high-index semiconductors, thus encouraging the search for alternative dielectrics for nanophotonics. In this paper, we employ bandgap engineering to synthesize hydrogenated amorphous Si nanoparticles (a-Si:H NPs) offering ideal features for functional nanophotonics. We observe significant ma…

We demonstrate a passive down-conversion imaging system that converts broadband ultraviolet light to narrow-band green light while preserving the directionality of rays, and thus enabling direct down-conversion imaging. At the same time our system has high transparency in the visible, enabling superimposed visible and ultraviolet imaging. The frequency conversion is performed by a subwavelength-thickness transparent downconverter based on highly efficient CsPbBr3 nanocrystals incorporated into the focal plane of a simple telescope or relay-lens geometry. The resulting imaging performance of th…
A global trend to miniaturization and multiwavelength performance of nanophotonic devices drives research on novel phenomena, such as bound states in the continuum and Mietronics, as well as the survey for high-refractive index and strongly anisotropic materials and metasurfaces. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is one of promising materials for the future nanophotonics owing to its inherent anisotropy and prospects of high-quality monocrystals growth with atomically flat surface. Here, we present highly accurate optical constants of hBN in the broad wavelength range of 250-1700 nm combining the …

Silicon nitride substrates are used to fabricate nanophotonic wavegide and resonators operating in the visible range of the spectrum. Fluidic channels generated by thermally decomposing the polymer through the oxide cladding is used to deliver ultra-small amounts of florescent samples to the optical sensors.
Nanophotonics provides the ability to rapidly and precisely reconfigure light beams on a compact platform. Infrared nanophotonic devices are widely used in data communications to overcome traditional bandwidth limitations of electrical interconnects. Nanophotonic devices also hold promise for use in biological applications that require visible light, but this has remained technically elusive due to the challenges of reconfiguring and guiding light at these smaller dimensions. In neuroscience, for example, there is a need for implantable optical devices to optogenetically stimulate neurons acro…
All-dielectric optical metasurfaces with high quality (Q) factors have so far been hampered by the lack of simultaneously lossless and high refractive index (RI) materials over the full visible spectrum. To achieve broad spectral coverage, the use of low-index materials is, in fact, unavoidable due to the inverse correlation between the band-gap energy (and therefore the optical losses) and the RI. However, for Mie resonant photonics, smaller RIs are associated with reduced Q factors and mode volume confinement. In this work, we leverage symmetry-broken bound states in the continuum (BICs) to …
Optical control of electronic properties is essential for future electric devices. Manipulating such properties has been limited to the microscale in spatial volume due to the wave nature of light; however, scaling down the volume is in extremely high demand. In this study, we demonstrate optical switching within a nanometric spatial volume in an organic electric material. Photochromic materials such as diarylethene derivatives exhibit semiconducting and insulating properties on ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, respectively, which are promising for optical switching and memory. To control t…

We developed a method to measure the phase retardation and birefringence of muscovite mica plate in the temperature range of 223K to 358K within the spectrum of 300 to 700 nm. The phase retardation data is gained through the standard transmission ellipsometry using spectroscopic ellipsometer. With the phase retardation and thickness of the mica plate we can calculate its birefringence dispersion. Our results give abundant phase retardation and birefringence data of muscovite mica in the ultraviolet and visible spectrum from 223K to 358K. From the experimental data, the phase retardation and bi…
We report the generation of a purely vibrational Raman comb, extending from the vacuum ultraviolet (184 nm) to the visible (478 nm), in hydrogen-filled kagomé-style photonic crystal fiber pumped at 266 nm. Stimulated Raman scattering and molecular modulation processes are enhanced by higher Raman gain in the ultraviolet. Owing to the pressure-tunable normal dispersion landscape of the fiber-gas system in the ultraviolet, higher-order anti-Stokes bands are generated preferentially in higher-order fiber modes. The results pave the way towards tunable fiber-based sources of deep- and vacuum ultra…
This paper reports the first demonstration of beta-phase gallium oxide as optical waveguides on sapphire substrates grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The propagation losses from visible to ultraviolet spectra were comprehensively studied. By optimizing the fabrication processes, minimum propagation loss was identified to be 3.7 dB/cm at the wavelength of 810 nm, which is comparable to other wide bandgap materials within the III-N family (GaN, AlN). To further reveal the underlying loss mechanisms, several physical mechanisms such as two-photon absorption, sidewall scatt…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with direct bandgaps are emerging candidates for microelectronics, nano-photonics, and optoelectronics. Transferred onto photonic integrated circuits (PICs), these semiconductor materials have enabled new classes of light-emitting diodes, modulators and photodetectors, that could be amenable to wafer-scale manufacturing. For integrated photonic devices, the optical losses of the PICs are critical. In contrast to silicon, silicon nitride (Si3N4) has emerged as a low-loss integrated platform with a wide transparency window from ultraviolet to mid-infrar…
This paper constructs the mapping relation from density of states (DOS) to UV-vis spectra by using an ab initio perspective. Taking BiOIO3 semiconductor photocatalyst as an example, the experimental verification was also carried out. The optical response of the material considers the superposition benefits of all possible transitions. Directly using the difference between valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) will lead to an underestimate of the energy band gap. This paper provides a new idea of linking the density functional theory (DFT) data with experiment phenomenon.
A far-ultraviolet (FUV) equivalent-wavelength super-resolution interferometric technique is proposed. This FUV equivalent-wavelength interferometric method combines four demodulated phases from four temporal-sets of visible interferograms. Here FUV super-resolution interferometry is defined as the estimation of a modulating phase coming from an FUV equivalent-wavelength illumination laser. To this end we need to combine the demodulated phase of four visible-wavelength interferograms. FUV equivalent-wavelength phase-sensitivity is of course beyond the phase-information capacity of a single visi…

The development of metamaterials, data processing circuits and sensors for the visible and UV parts of the spectrum is hampered by the lack of low-loss media supporting plasmonic excitations and drives the intense search for plasmonic materials beyond noble metals. By studying plasmonic nanostructures fabricated on the surface of topological insulator $\mbox{Bi}_{1.5}\mbox{Sb}_{0.5}\mbox{Te}_{1.8}\mbox{Se}_{1.2}$ we found that it is orders of magnitude better plasmonic material than gold and silver in the blue-UV range. Metamaterial fabricated from $\mbox{Bi}_{1.5}\mbox{Sb}_{0.5}\mbox{Te}_{1.8…
The spectrophotometric characterization of high efficiency, optically-active samples such as light-emitting organic bulks and thin films can be problematic because their broad-band luminescence is detected together with the monochromatic transmitted and reflected signals, hence perturbing measurements of optical transmittance and reflectance at wavelengths within the photoexcitation band. As a matter of fact, most commercial spectrophotometers apply spectral filtering before the light beam reaches the sample, not after it. In this Report, we introduce and discuss the method we have developed t…
Cholesteric liquid crystals with helicoidal molecular architecture are known for their ability to selectively reflect light with the wavelength that is determined by the periodicity of molecular orientations. Here we demonstrate that by using a cholesteric with oblique helicoidal(heliconical) structure, as opposed to the classic right-angle helicoid, one can vary the wavelength of selectively reflected light in a broad spectral range, from ultraviolet to visible and infrared (360-1520 nm for the same chemical composition) by simply adjusting the electric field applied parallel to the helicoida…
High-harmonic generation (HHG) provides short-wavelength light that is useful for precision spectroscopy and probing ultrafast dynamics. We report efficient, phase-coherent harmonic generation up to 9th-order (333 nm) in chirped periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides driven by phase-stable $\leq$12-nJ, 100 fs pulses at 3 $μ$m with 100 MHz repetition rate. A mid-infrared to ultraviolet-visible conversion efficiency as high as 10% is observed, amongst an overall 23% conversion of the fundamental to all harmonics. We verify the coherence of the harmonic frequency combs despite the complex …
We report on two types of Raman laser sources emitting in the near and middle ultraviolet spectral ranges by the use of a solarization-resilient gas-filled inhibited-coupling (IC) hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber (HCPCF) with record low transmission loss (minimum of 5 dB/km at 480 nm). The first source type emits a Raman comb generated in a hydrogen-filled HCPCF pumped by a 355 nm wavelength microchip nanosecond pulsed laser. The generated comb lines span from 270 nm to the near-infrared region with no less than 20 lines in the 270-400 nm wavelength range. The second type stands for the firs…
An efficient and compact coupler - a device that matches a micro-waveguide and a nano-waveguide - is an essential component for practical applications of nanophotonic systems. The number of coupling approaches has been rapidly increasing in the past ten years with the help of plasmonic structures and metamaterials. In this paper we overview recent as well as common solutions for nanocoupling. More specifically we consider the physical principles of operation of the devices based on a tapered waveguide section, a direct coupler, a lens and a scatterer and support them with a number of examples.
Highly-tunable coherent light generation is crucial for many important photonic applications. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a dominant approach for this purpose, which, however, exhibits a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the wavelength tunability in a conventional nonlinear platform. Recent development of the integrated lithium niobate (LN) technology makes it possible to achieve a large wavelength tuning while maintaining a high conversion efficiency. Here we report on-chip SHG that simultaneously achieves a large tunability and a high conversion efficiency inside a sing…
Freeform optics aims to expand the toolkit of optical elements by allowing for more complex phase geometries beyond rotational symmetry. Complex, asymmetric curvatures are employed to enhance the performance of optical components while minimizing their weight and size. Unfortunately, these asymmetric forms are often difficult to manufacture at the nanoscale with current technologies. Metasurfaces are planar sub-wavelength structures that can control the phase, amplitude, and polarization of incident light, and can thereby mimic complex geometric curvatures on a flat, wavelength-scale thick sur…
All-dielectric nanophotonics is an exciting and rapidly developing area of nanooptics which utilizes the resonant behavior of high-index low-loss dielectric nanoparticles for enhancing light-matter interaction on the nanoscale. When experimental implementation of a specific all-dielectric nanostructure is an issue, two crucial factors have to be in focus: the choice of a high-index material and a fabrication method. The degree to which various effects can be enhanced relies on the dielectric response of the chosen material as well as the fabrication accuracy. Here, we make an overview of avail…
The detection of individual photons is an inherently binary mechanism, revealing either their absence or presence while concealing their spectral information. For multi-color imaging techniques, such as single photon spectroscopy, fluorescence resonance energy transfer microscopy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, wavelength discrimination is essential and mandates spectral separation prior to detection. Here, we adopt an approach borrowed from quantum photonic integration to realize a compact and scalable waveguide-integrated single-photon spectrometer capable of parallel detection on…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently become attractive semiconductor materials for several optoelectronic applications, such as photodetection, light harvesting, phototransistors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. They are particularly appealing because their bandgap lies in the visible and near-IR range, and they possess strong excitonic resonances, high oscillator strengths, and valley-selective response. Coupling these materials to optical nanocavities enhances the quantum yield of exciton emission, enabling advanced quantum optics and nanophotonic devices…

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been extensively studied in various systems since its first proposal in quantum mechanics. Photonic BICs can enable optical mode confinement and provide field enhancement for nonlinear optics, but they have rarely been explored in nonlinear integrated photonic waveguides. Applying BICs in photonic integrated circuits enables low-loss light guidance and routing in low-refractive-index waveguides on high-refractive-index substrates, which is suitable for integrated photonics with nonlinear materials. Here, we report experimental demonstration of second-h…

However, its important extreme nonlinear behavior and ultrafast dynamics of carriers under strong-field excitation have yet to be revealed to date. Herein, we report nonperturbative high harmonic generation (HHG) in monolayer BP by first-principles simulation…
Silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) is a core device for single-photon detection in the visible and the near-infrared range, and widely used in many applications. However, due to limits of the structure design and device fabrication for current silicon SPADs, the key parameters of detection befficiency and timing jitter are often forced to compromise. Here, we propose a nanostructured silicon SPAD, which achieves high detection efficiency with excellent timing jitter simultaneously over a broad spectral range. The optical and electric simulations show significant performance enhanceme…
We investigate the origin of the near-ultraviolet visible plasmonic properties of three elemental materials from the p-block: Bi, Sb and Ga, with the aim to achieve and exploit unconventional plasmonic effects beyond those provided by noble metals. At such aim, we review and analyze a broad range of optically-determined dielectric functions e of these elemental materials available in the literature, covering a wide photon energy range (from 0.03 to 24 eV). It is shown that the contribution of Drude-like carriers to e1 (real part of e) in the near-ultraviolet visible is negligible for Bi and Sb…
