Dark matter stability can result from a residual matter-parity symmetry surviving spontaneous breaking of an extended gauge symmetry. We propose the simplest scotogenic dark matter completion of the original SVS theory (Phys.Rev. D22 (1980) 738), in which the "dark sector" particles as well as matter-parity find a natural theoretical origin in the model. We briefly comment on its main features.
We explore the idea that dark matter stability results from the presence of a matter-parity symmetry, arising naturally as a consequence of the spontaneous breaking of an extended $\mathrm{SU(3) \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X \otimes U(1)_{N}}$ electroweak gauge symmetry with fully gauged B-L. Using this framework we construct a theory for scotogenic dark matter and analyze its main features.
Building up on previous work we propose a Dark Matter (DM) model with gauged matter parity and dynamical gauge coupling unification, driven by the same physics responsible for scotogenic neutrino mass generation. Our construction is based on the extended gauge group \3311, whose spontaneous breaking leaves a residual conserved matter parity, $M_{P}$, stabilizing the DM particle candidates of the model. A key role is played by the Majorana ${\rm SU(3)_{L}}$-octet leptons, in allowing successful gauge coupling unification and one-loop scotogenic neutrino mass generation. Theoretical consistency …
In the context of the $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X \otimes U(1)_{N}}$ (3-3-1-1) extension of the standard model, we show how the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry gives rise to a residual symmetry which accounts for dark matter stability and small neutrino masses in a scotogenic fashion. As a special feature, the gauge structure implies that one of the light neutrinos is massless and, as a result, there is a lower bound for the $0νββ$ decay rate.
We show that the scotogenic dark symmetry can be obtained as a residual subgroup of the global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry already present in Standard Model. We propose a general framework where the $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to an even $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$ subgroup, setting the general conditions for neutrinos to be Majorana and the dark matter stability in terms of the residual $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$. Under this general framework, as examples, we build a class of simple models where, in the scotogenic spirit, the dark matter candidate is the lightest particle running inside the neutri…
Dark matter stability can result from a residual matter-parity symmetry, following naturally from the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry. Here we explore this idea in the context of the $\mathrm{SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X \otimes U(1)_{N}}$ electroweak extension of the standard model. The key feature of our new scotogenic dark matter theory is the use of a triplet scalar boson with anti-symmetric Yukawa couplings. This naturally implies that one of the light neutrinos is massless and, as a result, there is a lower bound for the $\rm 0νββ$ decay rate.
We show that Ma's scotogenic model, which is arguably one of the simplest settings containing a Dark Matter candidate and generating a naturally suppressed active neutrino mass at 1-loop level, suffers from a potentially severe hierarchy-type problem. In case the right-handed neutrinos involved have sufficiently large masses, they can via loop effects drive the mass parameter of the inert scalar contained in the model towards negative values. This behaviour leads to a breaking of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity symmetry built into the model which is paramount to keeping the setting consistent at low…
In this work we demonstrate how Scotogenic model can arise naturally from an $SU(7)$ grand unified theory. Our model also includes a low scale Pati-Salam $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetry which unifies quarks and leptons. $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry needed for the realization of Scotogenic scenario is a residual symmetry and not $ad$ $hoc$. A short fermion masses and dark matter analysis is included.
We study the phenomenology of a model that addresses the neutrino mass, dark matter, and generation of the electroweak scale in a single framework. Electroweak symmetry breaking is realized via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism in a classically scale invariant theory, while the neutrino mass is generated radiatively through interactions with dark matter in a typically scotogenic manner. The model introduces a scalar triplet and singlet and a vector-like fermion doublet that carry an odd parity of $Z_2$, and an even parity scalar singlet that helps preserve classical scale invariance. We sample ov…
The Scotogenic model is an economical scenario that generates neutrino masses at the 1-loop level and includes a dark matter candidate. This is achieved by means of an ad-hoc $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, which forbids the tree-level generation of neutrino masses and stabilizes the lightest $\mathbb{Z}_2$-odd state. Neutrino masses are also suppressed by a quartic coupling, usually denoted by $λ_5$. While the smallness of this parameter is natural, it is not explained in the context of the Scotogenic model. We construct an ultraviolet completion of the Scotogenic model that provides a natural expla…
The Scotogenic model is a popular scenario that induces radiative Majorana neutrino masses and includes a weakly-interacting dark matter candidate. We classify all possible ultraviolet extensions of the Scotogenic model in which (i) the dark $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity emerges at low energies after the spontaneous breaking of a global $\rm U(1)_L$ lepton number symmetry, and (ii) the low-energy effective theory contains a naturally small lepton number breaking parameter, suppressed by the mass of a heavy mediator integrated out at tree-level. We find $50$ such models and discuss two of them in detai…
In this work we consider a minimal version of the scotogenic model capable of accounting for an electron electric dipole moment within experimental sensitivity reach in addition to providing a dark matter candidate and radiatively generating neutrino masses. The Standard Model is minimally extended by two sterile fermions and one inert scalar doublet, both having odd parity, while the Standard Model particles have an even parity, imposed by a Z2 symmetry. The neutrino Yukawa couplings provide additional sources of CP violation, and thus a possible impact on electric dipole moments of charged l…
We construct the one-loop and two-loop scotogenic models for Dirac neutrino mass generation in the context of $U(1)_{B-L}$ extensions of standard model. It is indicated that the total number of intermediate fermion singlets is uniquely fixed by anomaly free condition and the new particles may have exotic $B-L$ charges so that the direct SM Yukawa mass term $\barν_Lν_R\overline{ϕ^0}$ and the Majorana mass term $(m_N/2)\overline{ν_R^C}ν_R$ are naturally forbidden. After the spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry, the discrete $Z_{2}$ or $Z_{3}$ symmetry appears as the residual symmetry an…
We propose a flavour theory in which the family symmetry results naturally from a six-dimensional orbifold compactification. "Diracness" of neutrinos is a consequence of the spacetime dimensionality, and the fact that right-handed neutrinos live in the bulk. Dark matter is incorporated in a scotogenic way, as a result of an auxiliary $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry, and its stability is associated to the conservation of a "dark parity" symmetry. The model leads naturally to a "golden" quark-lepton mass relation.
In the context of $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_χ$, where $U(1)_χ$ comes from $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, supplemented by the non-Abelian discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry for three lepton families, Dirac neutrino masses and their mixing are radiatively generated through dark matter. The gauge $U(1)_χ$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry is broken softly and spontaneously. Together, they result in two residual symmetries, a global $U(1)_L$ lepton number and a dark symmetry, which may be $Z_2$, $Z_3$, or $U(1)_D$ depending on what scalar breaks $U(1…

The scotogenic mechanism for radiative neutrino mass is generalized to include neutron-antineutron oscillation as well as proton decay. Dark matter is stabilized by extending the notion of lepton parity to matter parity. Leptogenesis is also a possible byproduct. This framework unifies the description of all these important, but seemingly unrelated, topics in physics beyond the standard model of particle interactions.
Dark matter (DM) is usually assumed to be stabilized by a symmetry, which is mostly considered to be $Z_2$. For example, in supersymmetry it is $R$ parity, i.e. $(-1)^{3B+L+2j}$. However, it may be $Z_n$ or $U(1)_D$, and derivable from generalized lepton number. In this context, neutrinos may be Majorana or Dirac, and owe their masses to dark matter, i.e. they are scotogenic.

We suggest a U(1)' gauge symmetry as an alternative to the usual R-parity of supersymmetric standard models, showing that it can also work as a common source of stabilities of proton and dark matter in addition to other attractive features. The residual discrete symmetries of a single U(1)' can provide stabilities to both the MSSM sector (proton) and the hidden sector (new dark matter candidate, LUP). The LUP can expand the viability of many models such as R-parity violating models and gauge mediation models regarding dark matter issue.
We propose a model based on the interplay between the type-II seesaw and scotogenic neutrino mass generation mechanisms. The setup features a $\mathbb{Z}_8$ discrete flavour symmetry which is broken down to a residual $\mathbb{Z}_2$ responsible for stabilising dark matter. A singlet scalar field is introduced to implement spontaneous CP violation. The effective neutrino mass matrix two-texture zero structure leads to sharp neutrino sector predictions. We analyse the constraints imposed on the model by current and future charged lepton flavour violation experiments. This framework provides two …
Minimalistic Dirac radiative neutrino mass model based on modular symmetry is proposed. We predict maximum number of observables possible including neutrino mass splittings, neutrino mass scale, lepton mixing angles, and Dirac phases in the leptonic sector with minimum number of input parameters possible. Model is capable of accommodating multicomponent dark matter, thanks to the $\emph{R}-$parity and accidental scotogenic $\mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetry. Furthermore, even-though neutrinos are Dirac in our model, matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe is achieved via neutrinogenesis mech…
The Standard Model gauge symmetry is extended by $U(1)_{B-L}$ which when spontaneously broken leads to residual $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry made anomaly free by introducing exotic SM singlets with corresponding $U(1)_{B-L}$ charges of $13$, $-14$, and $15$. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry ensures the Dirac nature of neutrinos, simultaneously stabilizing dark matter. Dirac neutrino mass is generated through scotogenic scenario. Dark matter, direct detection, cosmological constraints, and collider constraints analysis is performed. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry predicts the exact abse…
We present a non-supersymmetric scenario in which the R-parity symmetry $R_P = (-1)^{3(B-L)+2s}$ arises as a result of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking, leading to a viable Dirac fermion WIMP dark matter candidate. Direct detection in nuclear recoil experiments probes dark matter masses around $2-5$ TeV for $M_{Z^{\prime}} \sim 3-4$ TeV consistent with searches at the LHC, while lepton flavor violation rates and flavor changing neutral currents in neutral meson systems lie within reach of upcoming experiments.
Supersymmetry is one of the best motivated new physics scenarios. To build a realistic supersymmetric standard model, however, a companion symmetry is necessary to address various issues. While R-parity is a popular candidate that can address the proton and dark matter issues simultaneously, it is not the only option for such a property. We review how a TeV scale U(1)' gauge symmetry can replace the R-parity. Discrete symmetries of the U(1)' can make the model still viable and attractive with distinguishable phenomenology. For instance, with a residual discrete symmetry of the U(1)', Z6 = B3 x…
Presymmetry, the hidden symmetry underlying the charge and generational patterns of quarks and leptons, is utilized for repairing the left-right asymmetry of the standard model with Dirac neutrinos. It is shown that the restoration of parity is consequent with an indispensable left-right symmetric residual presymmetry. Thus, presymmetry substantiates left-right symmetry and the experimental search for the latter is the test of the former, with the nature of neutrinos as a crucial feature that can distinguish the left-right symmetry alone and its combination with presymmetry. This phenomenologi…
We investigate supersymmetric models where neither R-parity nor lepton number nor baryon number is imposed. The full high energy theory has an exact horizontal U(1) symmetry that is spontaneously broken. Quarks and Higgs fields carry integer horizontal charges but leptons carry half integer charges. Consequently, the effective low energy theory has two special features: a U(1) symmetry that is explicitly broken by a small parameter, leading to selection rules, and an exact residual Z_2 symmetry, that is lepton parity. As concerns neutrino parameters, the Z_2 symmetry forbids contributions from…
It has been known that Little Higgs models with T-parity, which can give a dark matter candidate, suffer from the anomalies of given models through the Wess-Zumino-Witten term, which in turn can violate the T-parity. Here we thus introduce a new kind of discrete symmetry called Z-parity, which is a residual gauge symmetry of an additional U(1) symmetry of the extended gauge group of the Little Higgs models. Because Z-parity comes from the gauge symmetry, this discrete symmetry not only remains unbroken under the anomalies but also can give the lightest Z-parity particle, which is stable and be…
The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism not only acts as an explanation for the absence of strong CP violation but also can play a main role in the solution to other open questions in particle physics and cosmology. Here we consider a model that identifies the PQ symmetry as a common thread in the solution to the strong CP problem, the generation of radiative Dirac neutrino masses and the origin of a multicomponent dark sector. Specifically, scotogenic neutrino masses arise at one loop level with the lightest fermionic mediator field acting as the second dark matter (DM) candidate thanks to the residu…
We consider a scenario where a supersymmetric model has multiple dark matter particles. Adding a U(1)' gauge symmetry is a well-motivated extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). It can cure the problems of the MSSM such as the mu-problem or the proton decay problem with high-dimensional lepton number and baryon number violating operators which R-parity allows. An extra parity (U-parity) may arise as a residual discrete symmetry after U(1)' gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. The Lightest U-parity Particle (LUP) is stable under the new parity becoming a new dark matte…
Discrete Abelian symmetries ($\mathbb{Z}_N$) are a common "artifact" of beyond the standard model physics models. They provide different avenues for constructing consistent scenarios for lepton and quark mixing patterns, radiative neutrino mass generation as well as dark matter stabilization. We argue that these symmetries can arise from the spontaneous breaking of the Abelian $U(1)$ factors contained in the global flavor symmetry transformations of the gauge invariant kinetic Lagrangian. This will be the case provided the ultra-violet completion responsible for the Yukawa structure involves s…
The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with conserved R-parity suffers from several fine-tuning problems, e.g. the mu-problem and the problem of proton decay through higher dimension operators. Both of these problems can be avoided by replacing R-parity with a non-anomalous U(1)' gauge symmetry which is broken at the TeV scale. The new gauge symmetry does not necessarily forbid all renormalizable R-parity violating interactions among the MSSM fields, and may allow for either lepton number or baryon number violation at the renormalizable level. However, the proton decay problem resurf…
We present a very simple 4th-generation (4G) model with an Abelian gauge interaction under which only the 4G fermions have nonzero charge. The U(1) gauge symmetry can have a Z_2 residual discrete symmetry (4G-parity), which can stabilize the lightest 4G particle (L4P). When the 4G neutrino is the L4P, it would be a neutral and stable particle and the other 4G fermions would decay into the L4P leaving the trace of missing energy plus the standard model fermions. Because of the new symmetry, the 4G particle creation and decay modes are different from those of the sequential 4G model, and the 4G …
The newly discovered exotic $Θ$ baryon of mass 1540 MeV (and very small width) truly has a very low mass, if it is a pentaquark system of even parity. A schematic model in which the coherent interaction of $u\bar s$ and $d\bar s$ pairs leads to a very large residual (non-confining) attractive interaction is introduced. This collective vibrational model accounts for the mass and small decay width to the $KN$ channel, but yields a significant coupling to the virtual $K^*N$ channel. The schematic model predicts an attractive $Θ$-nucleon interaction strong enough to bind a $Θ$ particle to a nucleu…
I show that breaking $B-L$ by one unit of this charge is suitable for neutrino mass generation through an inverse seesaw mechanism, stabilizing a dark matter candidate without supersymmetry, as well as solving the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the $W$ mass deviation via dark field contributions. The new physics is governed by the residual $Z_3$ symmetry of $B-L$ isomorphic to the center of the color group, instead of the well-studied matter parity.
The possibility of a small modification of spinor Quantum Electro-Dynamics is reconsidered, in which Lorentz and CPT non-covariant kinetic terms for photons and fermions are present. The corresponding free field theory is carefully discussed. The finite one-loop parity-odd induced effective action is unambiguously calculated using the physical cutoff method, which manifestly encodes the maximal residual symmetry group allowed by the presence of the Lorentz and CPT breaking axial-vector. This very same induced effective action, which is different from those ones so far quoted in the Literature,…
Flipping a symmetry often leads to a more fundamental symmetry and new physics insight. Applying this principle to the standard model electroweak symmetry, we obtain a novel gauge symmetry, which defines dark charge besides electric charge, neutrino mass mechanism, and resultant dark parity as residual flipped symmetry. The dark parity divides the model particles into two classes: odd and even. The dark matter candidate transforms as a fermion or a scalar singlet, having a mass below the electron mass, being stabilized by the dark parity. Scenarios for consistent neutrino mass generation and d…
We show that the canonical seesaw mechanism implemented by the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry provides two-component dark matter naturally. The seesaw scale that breaks $B-L$ defines a residual gauge symmetry to be $Z_6=Z_2\otimes Z_3$, where $Z_2$ leads to the usual matter parity, while $Z_3$ is newly recognized, transforming quark fields nontrivially. The dark matter components -- that transform nontrivially under the matter parity and $Z_3$, respectively -- can gain arbitrary masses, despite the fact that the $Z_3$ dark matter may be heavier than the light quarks $u,d$. This dark matter setup …
An extra Abelian gauge symmetry is motivated in many new physics models in both supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric cases. Such a new gauge symmetry may interact with both the observable sector and the hidden sector. We systematically investigate the most general residual discrete symmetries in both sectors from a common Abelian gauge symmetry. Those discrete symmetries can ensure the stability of the proton and the dark matter candidate. A hidden sector dark matter candidate (lightest U-parity particle or LUP) interacts with the standard model fields through the gauge boson Z', which may sel…
We argue that the gauge symmetry which includes SU(3)_L as a higher weak-isospin symmetry is manifestly given by SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X\otimes U(1)_N, where the last two factors determine the electric charge and B-L, respectively. This theory not only provides a consistent unification of the electroweak and B-L interactions, but also gives insights in dark matter, neutrino masses, and inflation. The dark matter belongs to a class of new particles that have wrong B-L numbers, and is stabilized due to a newly-realized W-parity as residual gauge symmetry. The B-L breaking field is i…
We show that the SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X (3-3-1) model of strong and electroweak interactions can naturally accommodate an extra U(1)_N symmetry behaving as a gauge symmetry. Resulting theory based on SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X X U(1)_N (3-3-1-1) gauge symmetry realizes B-L=-(2/\sqrt{3})T_8+N as a charge of SU(3)_L X U(1)_N. Consequently, a residual symmetry, W-parity, resulting from broken B-L in similarity to R-parity in supersymmetry is always conserved and may be unbroken. There is a specific fermion content recently studied in which all new particles that have wrong lepton-numbers are …
We study the scenario in which the Standard model is augmented by three generations of right-handed neutrinos and a scalar doublet. The newly introduced fields share an odd charge under a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity symmetry. This model, commonly known as "Scotogenic", was designed to provide a mechanism for active neutrino mass generation as well as a viable dark matter candidate. In this paper we consider a scenario in which the dark matter particle is at the keV-scale. Such particle is free from X-ray limits due to the unbroken parity symmetry that forbids the mixing between active and right-hand…
Recently it was shown that there is a unique Z_4^R symmetry for the MSSM which allows the Yukawa couplings and dimension five neutrino mass operator, forbids the mu term and commutes with SO(10). This Z_4^R symmetry contains matter parity as a subgroup and forbids dimension four and five proton decay operators. We show how to construct string vacua with discrete R symmetries in general and this symmetry in particular, and present an explicit example which exhibits the exact MSSM spectrum, the Z_4^R symmetry as well as other desired features such as gauge-top unification. We introduce the Hilbe…
