Presymmetry, the hidden symmetry underlying the charge and generational patterns of quarks and leptons, is utilized for repairing the left-right asymmetry of the standard model with Dirac neutrinos. It is shown that the restoration of parity is consequent with an indispensable left-right symmetric residual presymmetry. Thus, presymmetry substantiates left-right symmetry and the experimental search for the latter is the test of the former, with the nature of neutrinos as a crucial feature that can distinguish the left-right symmetry alone and its combination with presymmetry. This phenomenological implication is in accordance with the fact that Majorana neutrinos are usually demanded in the first case, but forbidden in the second.
Some aspects of two recent papers on parity doubling in the hadronic spectrum and its relation to restoration of linearly realized chiral symmetry are critically discussed.
This comment critically discusses certain aspects of a recent paper on parity doubling in the hadronic spectrum and its possible connection to chiral symmetry restoration.
We discuss the mass spectrum of highly-excited nucleon and $Δ^*$ resonances. The spectrum exhibits parity doublets, pairs of resonances of identical total angular momentum J but of opposite parity. It has been proposed that the parity doublets evidence restoration of chiral symmetry at large baryon excitation energies. We compare this conjecture with the possibility that high-mass states are organized into $(L,S)$-multiplets with defined intrinsic quark spins and orbital angular momenta. Indeed, the latter interpretation results in a better description of the data. There is however a small and…
In this paper, we study the chiral symmetry restoration in the hadronic spectrum in the framework of generalised Nambu-Jona-Lasinio quark models with instantaneous confining quark kernels. We investigate a heavy-light quarkonium and derive its bound-state equation in the form of a Schroedingerlike equation and, after the exact inverse Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, in the form of a Diraclike quation. We discuss the Lorentz nature of confinement for such a system and demonstrate explicitly the effective chiral symmetry restoration for highly excited states in the mesonic spectrum. We give an …
I discuss the masses of chiral partners in the context of chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature. Using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model I first remind the usual situation where two mesons of opposed parity become degenerate above the chiral transition temperature. Then I consider an effective theory for D mesons where the positive parity companion presents a "double pole structure". In this case three different masses need to be analyzed as functions of the temperature. I suggest a possible restoration pattern at high temperatures when the back-reaction of the quark condensate is incor…
It is argued that an appearance of the near parity doublets in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum is an evidence for the chiral symmetry restoration in the regime where a typical momentum of quarks is around the chiral symmetry restoration scale. At high enough baryon excitation energy the nontrivial gap solution, which signals the chiral symmetry breaking regime, disappears and the chiral symmetry should be restored. Thus one observes a phase transition in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum. The average kinetic energy of the constituent quarks in this region is just around t…
We present a novel way of testing the seesaw origin of neutrino mass in the context of the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model. It is based on the connection between the leptonic interactions of the doubly charged scalars, whose presence is at the core of the seesaw mechanism, and the neutrino Dirac Yukawa couplings which govern, among other processes, the right-handed neutrino decays into left-handed charged leptons. We prove that any physical quantity depending on these couplings is a function of the hermitian part only which can significantly simplify their future experimental determination.
We investigate the effect of chiral phase transition on the pentaquark $Θ^+$ mass and width at one-loop level of $NΘ^+K$ coupling at finite temperature and density. The behavior of the mass, especially the width in hadronic medium is dominated by the characteristics of chiral symmetry restoration at high temperature and high density. The mass and width shifts of positive-parity $Θ^+$ are much larger than that of negative-parity one, which may be helpful to determine the parity of $Θ^+$ in high energy nuclear collisions.
A simple argument for the restoration of parity symmetry high in the hadron spectrum is presented. The restoration scale is estimated to be 2.5 GeV. This in turn implies that typical quark model phenomenology such as scalar confinement or the $^3P_0$ decay model are only useful for low lying states. Minimal requirements for constructing more general phenomenologies are discussed. An additional mass degeneracy between $J^{++}$ and $ J^{--}$ states is shown to occur and an isovector $3^{++}$ state is predicted at roughly 1700 MeV, in contradiction with the naive quark model. Similarly, isovector…
We investigate the properties of quantum electrodynamics $(QED_3)$ in two spatial dimensions at finite temperature and density. The static as well as the dynamical properties of the planar plasma are calculated using the real time formalism of quantum field theory. It is shown, that due to the presence of the parity breaking Chern-Simons term, the propagating modes of the photon consists of two longielliptic waves with different values for the masses. However, it is shown that both in the high temperature and high density limit the parity symmetry is restored; in this limit the propagating mod…
It has recently been suggested that the observed structure of parity doublets, seen in the spectrum of highly excited baryons, may be due to the effective restoration of chiral symmetry for these states. This chiral symmetry restoration high in the spectrum is consistent with the concept of quark-hadron duality. Moreover, if QCD dynamics implies the linear Regge trajectories for highly excited baryons, then the MacDowell symmetry requires the parity doubling to appear, which shows that linear Regge trajectories and chiral symmetry restoration are well compatible. On the contrary, in the low-en…
We construct the most general nonlinear representation of chiral SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R broken down spontaneously to the isospin SU(2), on a pair of hadrons of same spin and isospin and opposite parity. We show that any such representation is equivalent, through a hadron field transformation, to two irreducible representations on two hadrons of opposite parity with different masses and axial couplings. This implies that chiral symmetry realized in the Nambu-Goldstone mode does not predict the existence of degenerate multiplets of hadrons of opposite parity nor any relations between their couplings …
The spectroscopic predictions of the Ademollo-Veneziano-Weinberg dual model are critically tested in view of the modern experimental data. The predicted equidistance of masses squared for chiral partners is shown to be violated high in energies, instead one observes an approximate degeneracy of these quantities. This phenomenon can be interpreted as the restoration of Wigner-Weyl realization of chiral symmetry for highly excited states. The scale of complete restoration is expected to be 2.5 GeV. A multispin-parity cluster structure of meson spectrum is revealed.
The recent ATLAS and CMS experiments show the first observations of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson at the LHC. We revisit the scenario that high-dimensional operators of fermions must be present due to the theoretical inconsistency of the fundamental cutoff (quantum gravity) with the parity-violating gauge symmetry of the Standard Model. Studying the four-fermion interaction of the third quark family, we show that at an intermediate energy threshold E\approx 4.27 TeV for the four-fermion coupling being larger than a critical value, the spontaneous symmetry-brea…
We derive the expressions of the vector and axial current from a chiral Lagrangian restricted to nucleons and pions. They display mixing terms between the axial and vector currents. We study the modifications in the nuclear medium of the coupling constants of the axial current, namely the pion decay constant and the nucleonic axial one due to the requirements of chiral symmetry. We express the renormalizations in terms of the local scalar pion density. The latter also governs the quark condensate evolu- tion and we discuss the link between this evolution and the renormaliza- tions. In the case…
While Left-Right symmetry (space parity) breaking historically appeared as a surprise, we argue that the real wonder is its restoration in long-distance interactions (at least until we find electric dipole moments!).
In a recent Letter we determined analytically the right-handed quark mixing matrix in the minimal Left-Right symmetric theory with generalized Parity. We derived its explicit form as a series expansion in a small parameter that measures the departure from hermiticity of quark mass matrices. Here we analyze carefully the convergence of the series by including higher order terms and by comparing with numerical results. We apply our findings to some phenomenological applications such as the production and decays of the right-handed gauge boson $W_R$, the neutrinoless double beta decay, the decays…
The effect of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry over the spectrum of highly excited hadrons is addressed in the framework of a microscopic chiral potential quark model (Generalised Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model) with a vectorial instantaneous quark kernel of a generic form. A heavy-light quark-antiquark bound system is considered, as an example, and the Lorentz nature of the effective light-quark potential is identified to be a pure Lorentz-scalar, for low-lying states in the spectrum, and to become a pure spatial Lorentz vector, for highly excited states. Consequently, the splitting between …
We investigate the equation of state for a recently developed hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model under neutron star conditions of $β-$equilibrium and charge neutrality. The model has the characteristic feature that at increasing baryon density chiral symmetry is restored in a first order transition within the hadronic phase by lifting the mass splitting between chiral partner states, before quark deconfinement takes place. Most important for this study are the nucleon (neutron, proton) and $N(1535)$ states. We present three sets for the two free parameters which result in compact star mass-radiu…
It is shown that in the large $N_c$ limit the light baryon spectrum exhibits the chiral restoration phase transition at high enough excitation energy. Such a phase transition is evidenced by the systematical parity doublets observed in the upper part of $N$ and $Δ$ spectra.

QCD string picture of highly excited hadrons very naturally explains parity doubling once the chiral symmetry is restored high in the spectrum. In particular, the spin-orbit and tensor interactions of quarks at the ends of the string, related to dynamics of the string, vanish. High in the spectrum there appears higher degree of degeneracy, namely parity doublets with different angular momentum cluster around energy of the string in the given quantum state.
We study the structural change of the vector spectral function and integrated production rates of dileptons in the presence of the chiral mixing induced exclusively at finite density. The mixing produces multiple bumps and peaks around the vacuum masses of the $ρ, ω$ and $ϕ$ resonances in the spectral function. The arising modification becomes pronounced when the mass difference between parity partners decreases. In particular, the emergent enhancement around the vacuum $ϕ$ meson in the production rates serves as an excellent signature of the partially-restored chiral symmetry in heavy-ion col…
Here we propose models with $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\otimes U(1)_{B-L}$ electroweak gauge symmetry in which parity (or charge conjugation) is broken explicitly and the interactions of left- and right-handed fermions are completely different from each other at any energy scale. In these sort of models there is no restoration of parity at high energies. However, as in all left-right symmetric models, the electroweak charged interactions of quarks and leptons appear to be only left-handed at low energies, because the right-handed interactions are suppressed by the mass of the respective charged ve…
We study nucleon structure with positive and negative parities using a parity doublet model endowed with hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the objective to probe dense baryonic matter. The model -- that we shall refer to as "PDHLS model" for short -- allows a chiral-invariant mass of the nucleons unconnected to spontaneously broken chiral symmetry which comes out to be m_0 ~ 200 MeV at tree level from fitting to the decay width of the parity doubler, N(1535), to nucleon-pion and nucleon axial coupling g_A=1.267. The presence of a substantial m_0 that remains non-vanishing at chiral restoration …
A chiral model is introduced that is based on the parity doublet formulation of chiral symmetry including hyperonic degrees of freedom. The phase structure of the model is determined. Depending on the masses of the chiral partners the transition to the chirally restored phase shows a first-order line with critical endpoints as function of chemical potential and temperature in additional to the standard liquid-gas phase transition of self-bound nuclear matter. We extend the parity doublet model to describe the deconfinement phase transition which is in quantitative agreement with lattice data a…
Recent developments for chiral and $U(1)_A$ restorations in excited hadrons are reviewed. We emphasize predictions of the chiral symmetry restoration scenario for axial charges and couplings to Goldstone bosons. Using very general chiral symmetry arguments it is shown that strict chiral restoration in a given excited nucleon forbids its decay into the $N π$ channel. We confront this prediction with the $N^*Nπ$ coupling constants extracted from the decay widths and observe a 100 % correlation of these data with the spectroscopic parity doublet patterns. These results suggest that the lowest app…
The recent OPERA measurement of high-energy neutrino velocity, once independently verified, implies new physics in the neutrino sector. We revisit the theoretical inconsistency of the fundamental high-energy cutoff attributing to quantum gravity with the parity-violating gauge symmetry of local quantum field theory describing neutrinos. This inconsistency suggests high-dimension operators of neutrino interactions. Based on these studies, we try to view the OPERA result, high-energy neutrino oscillations and indicate to observe the restoration of parity conservation by measuring the asymmetry o…
We study chiral partner structure of four light nucleons, $N(939)$, $N(1440)$, $N(1535)$ and $N(1650)$ using an effective chiral model based on the parity doublet structure. In our model we introduce four chiral representations, $({\bf 1},{\bf 2})$, $({\bf 2},{\bf 1})$, $({\bf 2},{\bf 3})$ and $({\bf 3},{\bf 2})$ under ${\rm SU}(2)_{\rm L} \otimes {\rm SU}(2)_{\rm R}$ symmetry. We determine the model parameters by fitting them to available experimental values of masses, widths and the axial charge of $N(939)$ together with the axial charges of $N(1535)$ and $N(1650)$ by lattice analyses. We fi…
Charge conjugation (C) and Parity (P) are exact symmetries at theta =pi and Theta = mu/(iT)=pi, where theta is the parameter of the so-called theta-vacuum, mu is the imaginary quark-number chemical potential and T is the temperature. Spontaneous breakings of these discrete symmetries are investigated by the the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. At zero T, P symmetry is spontaneously broken while C symmetry is conserved. As T increases, P symmetry is restored just after C symmetry is spontaneously broken, so that either P or C symmetry or both the symmetries are spontaneo…
We investigate modifications of mass and decay width of $N^*(1535)$ in nuclear matter in a chiral symmetric way. The nucleon and $N^*(1535)$ are introduced by a parity doublet model, and nuclear matter is constructed by one-loop diagrams of the nucleon and $N^*(1535)$. The decay width of $N^*(1535)$ is studied respecting chiral symmetry. Our calculations show that the partial width of $Γ_{N^*\to Nπ}$ is slightly broadened by a collisional broadening, and that of $Γ_{N^*\to Nη}$ is drastically suppressed at density. As a result, the total decay width $Γ_{\rm tot}$ gets small at density. These m…
The current theoretical status in the analysis and interpretation of low-mass dilepton measurements in (ultra-) relativistic heavy-ion experiments is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on potential signals of (partial) restoration of dynamically broken chiral symmetry in a hot and dense hadronic medium. It follows from chiral symmetry alone that parity partners of hadronic correlation functions must become identical when the symmetry is restored. The assessment of medium effects in the vector channel, which governs the dilepton production, thus necessitates a simultaneous treatment of the vecto…
We analyze the recent astrophysical constraints in the context of a hadronic equation of state (EoS), in which the baryonic matter is subject to chiral symmetry restoration. We show that with such EoS it is possible to reconcile the modern constraints on the neutron star (NS) mass, radius, and tidal deformability (TD). We find that the softening of the EoS, required by the TD constraint of a canonical $1.4~M_\odot$ NS, followed by a subsequent stiffening, required by the $2~M_\odot$ constraint, is driven by the appearance of $Δ$ matter due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Consequentl…
It is shown that experimental meson states with spins J=0,1,2,3 in the energy range 1.9 - 2.4 GeV obtained in recent partial wave analysis of proton-antiproton annihilation at LEAR remarkably confirm all predictions of chiral symmetry restoration. Classification of excited $\bar q q$ mesons according to the representations of chiral $U(2)_L \times U(2)_R$ group is performed. There are two important predictions of chiral symmetry restoration in highly excited mesons: (i) physical states must fill out approximately degenerate parity-chiral multiplets; (ii) some of the physical states with the gi…
It has recently been suggested that the parity doublet structure seen in the spectrum of highly excited baryons may be due to effective chiral symmetry restoration for these states. We review the recent developments in this field. We demonstrate with a simple quantum-mechanical example that it is a very natural property of quantum systems that a symmetry breaking effect which is important for the low-lying spectrum of the system, can become unimportant for the highly-lying states; the highly lying states reveal a multiplet structure of nearly degenerate states. Using the well established conce…
We report lattice QCD results on the axial charges of ground and excited nucleon states of both parities. This is the first study of these quantities with approximately chiral (CI) fermions. Two energy levels in the range of the negative parity resonances N*(1535) and N*(1650) are observed and we determine the axial charge for both. We obtain a small axial charge for one of them, which is consistent with the chiral symmetry restoration in this state as well as with the small axial charge of the N*(1535) predicted within the quark model. This result agrees with the findings of Takahashi et al. …
We find that, when the dilaton is implemented as a (pseudo-)Nambu-Goldstone boson using a conformal compensator or "conformon" in a hidden gauge symmetric Lagrangian written to $O(p^4)$ from which baryons arise as solitons, namely, skyrmions, the vector manifestation and chiral symmetry restoration at high density predicted in hidden local symmetry theory --- which is consistent with Brown-Rho scaling --- are lost or sent to infinite density. It is shown that they can be restored if in medium the behavior of the $ω$ field is taken to deviate from that of the $ρ$ meson in such a way that the fl…
Under the assumption of classical conformal invariance, we study the Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking mechanism in the minimal left-right symmetric model. This model is attractive as it provides a natural framework for small neutrino masses and the restoration of parity as a good symmetry of nature. We find that, in a large fraction of the parameter space, the parity symmetry is maximally broken by quantum corrections in the Coleman-Weinberg potential, which are a consequence of the conformal anomaly. As the left-right symmetry breaking scale is connected to the Planck scale through the loga…
We include effects of chiral symmetry and its restoration in the kinetic equations for baryon propagation and explore the consequences for $η$, $π^0$, $ρ$ and dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at 1-2A GeV. Numerical calculations are performed using the GiBUU microscopic transport model supplemented by the parity-doublet model for the mean fields of the nucleon and the $N^*(1535)$ resonance. In this chiral model, a strong dropping of the Dirac mass of the $N^*(1535)$ in the high-density stage of a collision leads to a considerable enhancement in the production of this resonance as com…
We study the breaking of parity symmetry in the 2+1 Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature with chemical potential $μ$, in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that the requirement of gauge invariance, which is considered mandatory in the presence of gauge fields, breaks parity at any finite temperature and provides for dynamical mass generation, preventing symmetry restoration for any non-vanishing $μ$. The dynamical mass becomes negligibly small as temperature is raised. We comment on the relevance of our observation for the gap generation of nodal quasi-particles in the pseu…
We propose an alternative formulation of a Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) where the difference between baryon number ($B$) and lepton number ($L$) remains an unbroken symmetry. This is unlike the conventional formulation, where $B-L$ is promoted to a local symmetry and is broken explicitly in order to generate Majorana neutrino masses. In our case $B-L$ remains a global symmetry after the left-right symmetry breaking, allowing only Dirac mass terms for neutrinos. In addition to parity restoration at some high scale, this formulation provides a natural framework to explain $B-L$ as an anomal…
We consider the parity doublet structure observed in high hadronic excitations within the instanton model for the QCD vacuum. In the conventional approach this doubling phenomenon is treated as a manifestation of the partial restoration of chiral or $U(1)_A$ symmetry. We demonstrate that the suppression of direct instanton contribution to the masses of excited hadrons leads to the partial $U(1)_A$ symmetry restoration in hadron spectrum. The origin of X(1835) resonance observed by BES Collaboration is studied upon the doublet structure. We argue also how X(1835) be interpreted as the lowest ps…

We show that in supersymmetric left-right models (SUSYLR), the upper bound on the lightest neutral Higgs mass can be appreciably higher than that in minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The exact magnitude of the bound depends on the scale of parity restoration and can be 10-20 GeV above the MSSM bound if mass of the right-handed gauge boson $W_R$ is in the TeV range. An important implication of our result is that since SUSYLR models provide a simple realization of seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses, measurement of the Higgs boson mass could provide an independent probe of a low see…
We perform an in-depth analysis of the Higgs sector in the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model and compute the scalar mass spectrum and associated mixings, offering simple physical and symmetry arguments in support of our findings. We identify the tree-level quartic and cubic potential couplings in terms of the physical states and compute the quantum corrections for the latter ones. The deviations from the Standard Model prediction of the cubic Higgs doublet coupling are considered. Moreover we discuss the possible implications concerning the stability of the potential under the renormalization…
In TeV scale left-right symmetric models, new dominant predictions to neutrinoless double beta decay and light neutrino masses are in mutual contradiction because of large contribution to the latter through popular seesaw mechanisms. We show that in a class of left-right models with high-scale parity restoration, these results coexist without any contravention with neutrino oscillation data and the relevant formula for light neutrino masses is obtained via gauged inverse seesaw mechanism. The most dominant contribution to the double beta decay is shown to be via $W^-_L- W^-_R$ mediation involv…
I argue that LHC may shed light on the nature of neutrino mass through the probe of the seesaw mechanism. The smoking gun signature is lepton number violation through the production of same sign lepton pairs, a collider analogy of the neutrinoless double beta decay. I discuss this in the context of L-R symmetric theories, which led originally to neutrino mass and the seesaw mechanism. A W_R gauge boson with a mass in a few TeV region could easily dominate neutrinoless double beta decay, and its discovery at LHC would have spectacular signatures of parity restoration and lepton number violation…
While the detection of $W_R$-boson at the Large Hadron Collider is likely to resolve the mystery of parity violation in weak interaction, observation of neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) is expected to determine whether neutrinos are Majorana fermions. In this work we consider a class of LR models with TeV scale $W_R, Z_R$ bosons but having parity restoration at high scales where they originate from well known Pati-Salam symmetry or $SO(10)$ grand unified theory minimally extended to accommodate inverse seesaw frame work for neutrino masses. Most dominant new contribution to neutrinoless…
