While Left-Right symmetry (space parity) breaking historically appeared as a surprise, we argue that the real wonder is its restoration in long-distance interactions (at least until we find electric dipole moments!).
We study the mass spectrum of mesons at high temperature in $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two flavors of Dirac fundamental fermions. Numerical simulations are carried out on anisotropic lattices using Wilson fermions, with lattice parameters tuned so that Euclidean symmetry is restored at low energy. We determine the pseudo-critical temperature $T_c$ using renormalized Polyakov loops. We calculate temporal and spatial meson correlation functions across $T_c$, and observe a clear sign of parity doublings above $T_c$ in both vector and scalar channels. The degeneracy between parity partners in the s…
We discuss here two of the questions posed at the beginning of the Bled 1998 workshop: Why is the weak charge dependent on handedness? Why do we have parity violation in the Standard Model? It is argued that the quarks and leptons must be protected from gaining a fundamental mass, very large compared to the electroweak scale, by gauge invariance and hence that their gauge charges must depend on handedness. Furthermore we argue that it is the conservation of parity in the electromagnetic and strong interactions rather than parity violation in the weak interactions that needs an explanation. We …
Schwinger-Dyson equations are used to study spontaneous chiral and parity symmetry breaking of three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with two-component fermions. This theory admits a topological photon mass that explicitly breaks parity symmetry and generates a fermion mass. We show that the pattern of symmetry breaking maintains parity but breaks chiral symmetry. We also find that chiral symmetry is restored at a critical number of fermion flavours in our truncation scheme. The Coleman-Hill theorem is used to demonstrate that the results are reasonably accurate.
Based on a thorough comparison of the nucleon and $Δ$ excitation spectrum with models we show that parity doublets observed in the mass spectra do not entail the consequence that highly excited $N$ or $Δ$ resonances are insensitive to chiral symmetry breaking. Instead, the mechanism of mass generation in excited states is suggested to be the same as for the baryon ground states: the mass is assigned to fluctuating gluon fields and their strong attraction. In excited baryons, the field energy has to be integrated over a larger volume, and the total mass increases. Thus, also the additional mass…
The arguments for the possibility of violation of P and CP symmetries of strong interactions at finite temperature are presented. A new way of observing these effects in heavy ion collisions is proposed -- it is shown that parity violation should manifest itself in the asymmetry between positive and negative pions with respect to the reaction plane. Basing on topological considerations, we derive a {\it lower} bound on the magnitude of the expected asymmetry, which may appear within the reach of the current and/or future heavy ion experiments.
We discuss the mass spectrum of highly-excited nucleon and $Δ^*$ resonances. The spectrum exhibits parity doublets, pairs of resonances of identical total angular momentum J but of opposite parity. It has been proposed that the parity doublets evidence restoration of chiral symmetry at large baryon excitation energies. We compare this conjecture with the possibility that high-mass states are organized into $(L,S)$-multiplets with defined intrinsic quark spins and orbital angular momenta. Indeed, the latter interpretation results in a better description of the data. There is however a small and…
Chiral properties of positive and negative parity nucleons, N and N*$, are studied from the viewpoint of chiral symmetry. Two possible ways to assign chiral transformations to the negative parity nucleon are considered. Using linear sigma models based on the two chiral realizations, theoretical as well as phenomenological consequences of the two different assignments are investigated. We find that the nucleon mass in the chiral restored phase is the key quantity to determine the meson-nucleon couplings and the axial charges of nucleons. We also discuss the role of chiral symmetry breaking in t…
We study the possibility of soft breaking effects of the generalized parity within the minimal Left-Right model. One aim of the paper is to elaborate on the potentiality, the limit, and the predictivity of a restored parity at high scale. While revisiting the issue of strong CP in the Left-Right theories, we motivate the possibility of explicit-parity-breaking, that we then parameterize in the right-handed quark mixing matrix. The strong CP parameter $\barθ$ is also parameterized in terms of the breaking. We discuss some possible phenomenological consequences in this scenario. In particular, t…
We investigate the properties of quantum electrodynamics $(QED_3)$ in two spatial dimensions at finite temperature and density. The static as well as the dynamical properties of the planar plasma are calculated using the real time formalism of quantum field theory. It is shown, that due to the presence of the parity breaking Chern-Simons term, the propagating modes of the photon consists of two longielliptic waves with different values for the masses. However, it is shown that both in the high temperature and high density limit the parity symmetry is restored; in this limit the propagating mod…
It is argued that an appearance of the near parity doublets in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum is an evidence for the chiral symmetry restoration in the regime where a typical momentum of quarks is around the chiral symmetry restoration scale. At high enough baryon excitation energy the nontrivial gap solution, which signals the chiral symmetry breaking regime, disappears and the chiral symmetry should be restored. Thus one observes a phase transition in the upper part of the light baryon spectrum. The average kinetic energy of the constituent quarks in this region is just around t…
I consider parity violation of the chiral symmetry broken vacuum. It is shown that the parity of the true vacuum in the chiral symmetry breaking model is violated. I propose new mechanism of massive neutrino, which the neutrinos have mass in terms of the chiral symmetry breaking. In this mechanism, it may give us new understanding why almost neutrinos have left chirality. Further, NJL model is proposed as alternative phenomenological model of neutrinos.
We illustrate why color deconfines when chiral symmetry is restored in gauge theories with quarks in the fundamental representation, and while these transitions do not need to coincide when quarks are in the adjoint representation, entanglement between them is still present.
We calculate the masses of the vector and axial-vector mesons as well as the nucleon and the delta resonance in the chiral symmetry restored vacuum. This is accomplished by separating the quark operators appearing in the QCD sum rules for these hadrons into the chiral symmetric and symmetry breaking parts depending on the contributions of the fermion zero modes. We then extract the vacuum expectation values of all the separated parts of the quark operators using the QCD sum rule relations for these hadrons with their vacuum masses and widths. By taking the chiral symmetry breaking parts to be …
A chiral model is introduced that is based on the parity doublet formulation of chiral symmetry including hyperonic degrees of freedom. The phase structure of the model is determined. Depending on the masses of the chiral partners the transition to the chirally restored phase shows a first-order line with critical endpoints as function of chemical potential and temperature in additional to the standard liquid-gas phase transition of self-bound nuclear matter. We extend the parity doublet model to describe the deconfinement phase transition which is in quantitative agreement with lattice data a…
The recent ATLAS and CMS experiments show the first observations of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson at the LHC. We revisit the scenario that high-dimensional operators of fermions must be present due to the theoretical inconsistency of the fundamental cutoff (quantum gravity) with the parity-violating gauge symmetry of the Standard Model. Studying the four-fermion interaction of the third quark family, we show that at an intermediate energy threshold E\approx 4.27 TeV for the four-fermion coupling being larger than a critical value, the spontaneous symmetry-brea…
QCD string picture of highly excited hadrons very naturally explains parity doubling once the chiral symmetry is restored high in the spectrum. In particular, the spin-orbit and tensor interactions of quarks at the ends of the string, related to dynamics of the string, vanish. High in the spectrum there appears higher degree of degeneracy, namely parity doublets with different angular momentum cluster around energy of the string in the given quantum state.
Charge conjugation (C) and Parity (P) are exact symmetries at theta =pi and Theta = mu/(iT)=pi, where theta is the parameter of the so-called theta-vacuum, mu is the imaginary quark-number chemical potential and T is the temperature. Spontaneous breakings of these discrete symmetries are investigated by the the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. At zero T, P symmetry is spontaneously broken while C symmetry is conserved. As T increases, P symmetry is restored just after C symmetry is spontaneously broken, so that either P or C symmetry or both the symmetries are spontaneo…
A right-right-left extension of the standard model is proposed. In this model, the standard model gauge group $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y $ is extended to $SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R \otimes SU(2)^{\prime}_R \otimes SU(2)^{\prime}_L \otimes U(1)_{Y}$. The gauge symmetries $SU(2)^{\prime}_R$, $SU(2)^{\prime}_L$ are the mirror counter-parts of the $SU(2)_L$ and $SU(2)_R$ respectively. Parity is spontaneously broken when the scalar Higgs fields acquire vacuum-expectation values in a certain pattern. Parity is restored at the scale of $SU(2)^{\prime}_L$. The gauge sector has a unique pattern. The scalar …
We investigate the equation of state for a recently developed hybrid quark-meson-nucleon model under neutron star conditions of $β-$equilibrium and charge neutrality. The model has the characteristic feature that at increasing baryon density chiral symmetry is restored in a first order transition within the hadronic phase by lifting the mass splitting between chiral partner states, before quark deconfinement takes place. Most important for this study are the nucleon (neutron, proton) and $N(1535)$ states. We present three sets for the two free parameters which result in compact star mass-radiu…
Evidence is mounting that natural supersymmetry at the weak scale is not realized in nature. On the other hand, string theory suggests that supersymmetry may be present at some energy scale, and gauge coupling unification implies that that energy scale may be relatively low. A puzzling question is then why nature would prefer a low, but not completely natural supersymmetry breaking scale. Here we offer one possible explanation, which simultaneously addresses also the strong CP and mu problems. We introduce an axion, and suppose that the Peccei-Quinn and supersymmetry breaking scales are connec…
Recently it has been proposed that the physical spectrum of a vector-like gauge field theory may exhibit an enhanced global symmetry near a chiral/conformal phase transition. The new symmetry is related to the possibility, supported by various investigations, that a parity-doubled spectrum develops as the number of fermions Nf is increased to a critical value above which it is expected that the symmetric phase is restored. We show that parity-doubling together with the associated enhanced global symmetry severely constrains the epsilon terms of the effective Lagrangian involving Goldstone boso…
The recent ATLAS and CMS experiments show the first observations of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson at the LHC. We revisit the theoretical inconsistency of the fundamental high-energy cutoff with the parity-violating gauge symmetry of local quantum field theory for the standard model. This inconsistency suggests high-dimensional operators of fermion interactions, which are attributed to the quantum gravity. In this letter, recalling the minimal dynamical symmetry-breaking mechanism, we show that it is energetically favorable for the top quark to acquire its mass…
One of the deepest unsolved puzzles of subatomic physics is why Nature prefers the left particles to the right ones. Mirror matter is an attempt to understand this mystery by assuming the existence of a "parallel''world where this preference is exactly opposite. Thus in the Universe consisting of the ordinary and the mirror matter the symmetry between the left and right is completely restored. Mirror matter is constrained to interact with us only very weakly. Still, its existence can be inferred by using experimental evidence such as the observation of astrophysical objects related to the dark…
We construct an anomaly-free extension of the left-right symmetric model, where the maximal flavor group is gauged and anomaly cancellation is guaranteed by adding new vectorlike fermion states. We address the question of the lowest allowed flavor symmetry scale consistent with data. Because of the mechanism recently pointed out by Grinstein et al. tree-level flavor changing neutral currents turn out to play a very weak constraining role. The same occurs, in our model, for electroweak precision observables. The main constraint turns out to come from WR-mediated flavor changing neutral current …
With the hypothesis that all independent degrees of freedom of basic building blocks should be treated equally on the same footing and correlated by a possible maximal symmetry, we arrive at an 4-dimensional space-time unification model. In this model the basic building blocks are Majorana fermions in the spinor representation of 14-dimensional quantum space-time with a gauge symmetry $G = SO(1,3)\times SU(32)\times U(1)_A \times SU(3)_F$. The model leads to new physics including mirror particles of the standard model. It enables us to issue some fundamental questions that include: why our liv…
We discuss the topological phenomena in the QCD-like theories with variable number of fundamental $N_f$ or adjoint $N_a$ fermions, focusing on the temperatures at or above the critical value $T_c$ of chiral symmetry restoration. Nonzero average of the Polyakov line, or holonomy, splits instantons into (anti)selfdual dyons, and we study both bosonic and fermionic interactions between them. The high temperature phase is a dilute gas of "molecules" made of $2N_c$ dyons, neutral in topological, electric and magnetic charges. At intermediate temperatures the diluteness reaches some critical level a…
We discuss why the SU(3)^3 supersymmetric model with the most general superpotential can naturally break to the standard model if gauge singlets and a discrete symmetry are included. This mechanism does away with the need for fine-tuning in the form of the assumed absence of certain terms in the superpotential. It also automatically guarantees that any abelian discrete phase symmetry of the GUT will survive the symmetry breaking. Such a discrete symmetry, also known as the matter parity, is needed to suppress both proton decay and the flavor changing neutral current (FCNC), and may help solve …
Left-right symmetric gauge theory presents a minimal paradigm to accommodate massive neutrinos with all known conserved symmetries duly gauged. The work presented here is based on the argument that the see-saw mechanism does not force the new right handed symmetry scale to be very high, and as such some of the species from the spectrum of the new gauge and Higgs bosons can have masses within a few orders of magnitude of the TeV scale. The scale of the left-right parity breaking in turn can be sequestered from the Planck scale by supersymmetry. We have studied several formulations of such Just …

In previous papers the permutation group S_4 has been suggested as an ordering scheme for elementary particles, and the appearance of this finite symmetry group was taken as indication for the existence of a discrete inner symmetry space underlying elementary particle interactions. Here it is pointed out that a more suitable choice than the tetrahedral group S_4 is the pyritohedral group A_4 x Z_2 because its vibrational spectrum exhibits exactly the mass multiplet structure of the 3 fermion generations. Furthermore it is noted that the same structure can also be obtained from a primordial sym…
