Bochner's theorem says that if $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with negative Ricci curvature, then the isometry group $\operatorname{Iso}(M)$ is finite. In this article, we show that if $(X,d,m)$ is a compact metric measure space with synthetic negative Ricci curvature in Sturm's sense, then the measure preserving isometry group $\operatorname{Iso}(X,d,m)$ is finite. We also give an effective estimate on the order of the measure preserving isometry group for a compact weighted Riemannian manifold with negative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature except for small portions.
The problem of determining the {\it Bonnet hypersurfaces in} $R^{n+1}$, for $n>1$, is studied here. These hypersurfaces are by definition those that can be isometrically mapped to another hypersurface or to itself (as locus) by at least one nontrivial isometry preserving the mean curvature. The other hypersurface and/or (the locus of) itself is called {\it Bonnet associate} of the initial hypersurface. The orthogonal net which is called \hbox{\it $A$-net} is special and very important for our study and it is described on a hypersurface. It is proved that, non-minimal hypersurface in $R^{n+1}$ …
In this paper the notion of quasi-isometry between two Riemannian manifolds has been introduced. This idea is also imposed to study quasi-isometry between two almost contact metric manifolds. Moving further, some curvature properties of two quasi-isometrically embedded almost contact metric manifolds, $N(k)-$contact metric manifolds and Sasakian manifolds are investigated. Next, an illustrative example of a quasi-isometry between two Sasakian structures is constructed. Finally, a relation between the scalar curvature and the quasi-isometric constants for two quasi-isometric Riemannian manifold…
We prove that the identity component of the holomorphic isometry group of a Sasaki-Einstein metric is the identity component of a maximal compact subgroup of its automorphism group.
In this paper we study isometry-invariant Finsler metrics on inner product spaces over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, i.e. the Finsler metrics which do not change under the action of all isometries of the inner product space. We give a new proof of the analytic description of all such metrics. In this article the most general concept of the Finsler metric is considered without any additional assumptions that are usually built into its definition. However, we present refined versions of the described results for more specific classes of metrics, including the class of Riemannian metrics. Our mai…
Given a metric space X, one defines its Wasserstein space W2(X) as a set of sufficiently decaying probability measures on X endowed with a metric defined from optimal transportation. In this article, we continue the geometric study of W2(X) when X is a simply connected, nonpositively curved metric spaces by considering its isometry group. When X is Euclidean, the second named author proved that this isometry group is larger than the isometry group of X. In contrast, we prove here a rigidity result: when X is negatively curved, any isometry of W2(X) comes from an isometry of X.
We prove the existence of a quantum isometry groups for new classes of metric spaces: (i) geodesic metrics for compact connected Riemannian manifolds (possibly with boundary) and (ii) metric spaces admitting a uniformly distributed probability measure. In the former case it also follows from recent results of the second author that the quantum isometry group is classical, i.e. the commutative $C^*$-algebra of continuous functions on the Riemannian isometry group.
We prove that the group of isometries of a metric measure space that satisfies the Riemannian curvature condition, $RCD^*(K,N),$ is in fact a Lie group. We obtain an optimal upper bound on its dimension and classify the spaces where this maximal dimension is achieved.
In this paper we consider simply connected Lie groups equipped with left invariant Randers metrics which arise from left invariant Riemannian metrics and left invariant vector fields. Then we study the intersection between automorphism and isometry groups of these spaces. Finally it has shown that for any left invariant vector field, in a special case, the Lie group admits a left invariant Randers metric such that this intersection is a maximal compact subgroup of the group of automorphisms with respect to which the considered vector field is invariant.
We prove that every Weil-Petersson isometry of the Teichmuller space T(g,n) is induced by an element of the extended mapping class group; here 3g-3+n > 1 and (g,n) is not (1,2). Our method follows Ivanov's proof of the Royden's analogous theorem for the Teichmuller metric: we study the action of an isometry on the frontier of the metric completion of the Teichmuller space, and show that the isometry then induces an automorphism on the relevant complex of curves. Some synthetic geometry of the Weil-Petersson metric completes the proof.
We show that every cross ratio preserving homeomorphism between boundaries of Hadamard manifolds extends to a continuous map, called circumcenter extension, provided that the manifolds satisfy certain visibility conditions. We show that this map is a rough isometry, whenever the manifolds admit cocompact group actions by isometries and we improve the quasi-isometry constants provided by Biswas in the case of CAT(-1)} spaces. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition for this map to be an isometry in the case of Hadamard surfaces.
We relate $L^{q,p}$-cohomology of bounded geometry Riemannian manifolds to a purely metric space notion of $\ell^{q,p}$-cohomology, packing cohomology. This implies quasi-isometry invariance of $L^{q,p}$-cohomology together with its multiplicative structure. The result partially extends to the Rumin $L^{q,p}$-cohomology of bounded geometry contact manifolds.
Let $G$ be a connected, simply-connected, compact simple Lie group. In this paper, we show that the isometry group of $G$ with a left-invariant pseudo-Riemannan metric is compact. Furthermore, the identity component of the isometry group is compact if $G$ is not simply-connected.
In this paper we construct a functor from the category of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds to the category of three-dimensional manifolds with generalized metric tensors. For each two-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ we construct a metric tensor $\hat g$ (in general, with singularities) on the total space $SO(M,g)$ of the principal bundle of the positively oriented orthonormal frames on $M$. We call the metric $\hat g$ the Wagner lift of $g$. We study the relation between the isometry groups of $(M,g)$ and $(SO(M,g),\hat g)$. We prove that the projections of the geodesics o…
We approach the quasi-isometric classification questions on Lie groups by considering low dimensional cases and isometries alongside quasi-isometries. First, we present some new results related to quasi-isometries between Heintze groups. Then we will see how these results together with the existing tools related to isometries can be applied to groups of dimension 4 and 5 in particular. Thus we take steps towards determining all the equivalence classes of groups up to isometry and quasi-isometry. We completely solve the classification up to isometry for simply connected solvable groups in dimen…
In this work we investigate solvable and nilpotent Lie groups with special metrics. The metrics of interest are left-invariant Einstein and algebraic Ricci soliton metrics. Our main result shows that the existence of a such a metric is intrinsic to the underlying Lie algebra. More precisely, we show how one may determine the existence of such a metric by analyzing algebraic properties of the Lie algebra in question and infinitesimal deformations of any initial metric. Our second main result concerns the isometry groups of such distinguished metrics. Among the completely solvable unimodular Lie…
For a given smooth manifold, we consider the moduli space of Riemannian metrics up to isometry and scaling. One can define a preorder on the moduli space by the size of isometry groups. We call a Riemannian metric that attains a maximal element with respect to the preorder a maximal metric. Maximal metrics give nice examples of self-similar solutions for various metric evolution equations such as the Ricci flow. In this paper, we construct many examples of maximal metrics on Euclidean spaces.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions that show that both the group of isometries and the group of measure-preserving isometries are Lie groups for a large class of metric measure spaces. In addition we study, among other examples, whether spaces having a generalized lower Ricci curvature bound fulfill these requirements. The conditions are satisfied by RCD*-spaces and, under extra assumptions, by CD-spaces, CD*-spaces, and MCP-spaces. However, we show that the MCP-condition by itself is not enough to guarantee a smooth behavior of these automorphism groups. More generally we show that s…
This work addresses the questions: (i) Among all left-invariant Riemannian metrics on a given Lie group, is there any whose isometry group or isometry algebra contain that of all others? (ii) Do expanding left-invariant Ricci solitons exhibit such maximal symmetry? Question (i) is addressed both for semisimple and for solvable Lie groups. Building on previous work of the authors on Einstein metrics, a complete answer is given to (ii): expanding homogeneous Ricci solitons have maximal isometry algebras although not always maximal isometry groups. As a consequence of the tools developed to addre…
We study the isometry groups and Killing vector fields of a family of pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Euclidean space which have neutral signature (3+2p,3+2p). All are p+2 curvature homogeneous, all have vanishing Weyl scalar invariants, all are geodesically complete, and all are 0-curvature modeled on an indecomposible symmetric space. Some of these manifolds are not p+3 curvature homogeneous. Some are homogeneous but not symmetric.
Recently, it was shown that Einstein solvmanifolds have maximal symmetry in the sense that their isometry groups contain the isometry groups of any other left-invariant metric on the given Lie group. Such a solvable Lie group is necessarily non-unimodular. In this work we consider unimodular solvable Lie groups and prove that there is always some metric with maximal symmetry. Further, if the group at hand admits a Ricci soliton, then it is the isometry group of the Ricci soliton which is maximal.
We show that every $\mathbb R$-linear surjective isometry between the cotangent spaces to the Teichmüller space equipped with the Thurston norm is induced by some isometry between the underlying hyperbolic surfaces, which is an analogue of Royden's theorem concerning the Teichmüller metric.
We derive the canonical forms of super Riemannian metrics and the local isometry groups of such metrics. For certain super metrics we also compute the simply connected covering groups of the local isometry groups and interpret these as local spin groups of the super metric. Using a generalization of a Theorem of Rogers, which is itself one of the main results of this paper, we show that for super metrics we call body reducible, each such simply connected covering group G is a super Lie group with a conventional super Lie algebra as its corresponding super Lie algebra. We work exclusively in th…
We analyze the inverse problem, originally formulated by Dix in geophysics, of reconstructing the wave speed inside a domain from boundary measurements associated with the single scattering of seismic waves. We consider a domain $\tilde M$ with a varying and possibly anisotropic wave speed which we model as a Riemannian metric $g$. For our data, we assume that $\tilde M$ contains a dense set of point scatterers and that in a subset $U\subset \tilde M$, modeling a region containing measurement devices, we can measure the wave fronts of the single scattered waves diffracted from the point scatte…
We consider the orthonormal frame bundle F(M) of a Riemannian manifold M. A construction of Sasaki defines a canonical Riemannian metric on F(M). We prove that for two closed Riemannian n-manifolds M and N, the frame bundles F(M) and F(N) are isometric if and only if M and N are isometric, except possibly in dimensions 3, 4, and 8. This answers a question of Benson Farb except in dimensions 3, 4, and 8.
A "hidden symmetry" of a Riemannian manifold M is an isometry of a d-sheeted, 1<d<\infty, Riemannian cover of M which is not the lift of any isometry. In this paper we characterize the locally symmetric metric(s) on a closed, arithmetic manifold as the unique metric with infinitely many hidden symmetries.
We prove that for any compact manifold of dimension greater than $1$, the set of pseudo-Riemannian metrics having a trivial isometry group contains an open and dense subset of the space of metrics.
Let H be a closed, noncompact subgroup of a simple Lie group G, such that G/H admits an invariant Lorentz metric. We show that if G = SO(2,n), with n > 2, then the identity component of H is conjugate to the identity component of SO(1,n). Also, if G = SO(1,n), with n > 2, then the identity component of H is conjugate to the identity component of SO(1,n-1).
Inspired by the role geometric structures play in our understanding of surfaces and three-manifolds, and Berger's observation that a surface of constant sectional curvature is determined up to local isometry by its Laplace spectrum, we explore the extent to which compact locally homogeneous three-manifolds are characterized up to local isometry by their spectra. We observe that there are eight `metrically maximal' three-dimensional geometries on which all compact locally homogeneous three-manifolds are modeled and we demonstrate that for five of these geometries the associated compact locally …
A left invariant metric on a nilpotent Lie group is called minimal, if it minimizes the norm of the Ricci tensor among all left invariant metrics with the same scalar curvature. Such metrics are unique up to isometry and scaling and the groups admitting a minimal metric are precisely the nilradicals of (standard) Einstein solvmanifolds. If $N$ is endowed with an invariant symplectic, complex or hypercomplex structure, then minimal compatible metrics are also unique up to isometry and scaling. The aim of this paper is to give more evidence of the existence of minimal metrics, by presenting seve…
The present paper studies globally defined Kropina metrics as solutions of the Zermelo's navigation problem. Moreover, we characterize the Kropina metrics of constant flag curvature showing that up to local isometry, there are only two model spaces of them: the Euclidean space and the odd-dimensional spheres.
We give a global picture of the Ricci flow on the space of three-dimensional, unimodular, nonabelian metric Lie algebras considered up to isometry and scaling. The Ricci flow is viewed as a two-dimensional dynamical system for the evolution of structure constants of the metric Lie algebra with respect to an evolving orthonormal frame. This system is amenable to direct phase plane analysis, and we find that the fixed points and special trajectories in the phase plane correspond to special metric Lie algebras, including Ricci solitons and special Riemannian submersions. These results are one way…
We consider compact complex surfaces with Hermitian metrics which are Einstein but not Kaehler. It is shown that the manifold must be CP2 blown up at 1,2, or 3 points, and the isometry group of the metric must contain a 2-torus. Thus the Page metric on CP2#(-CP2) is almost the only metric of this type.
In general relativity, an IDEAL (Intrinsic, Deductive, Explicit, ALgorithmic) characterization of a reference spacetime metric $g_0$ consists of a set of tensorial equations $T[g]=0$, constructed covariantly out of the metric $g$, its Riemann curvature and their derivatives, that are satisfied if and only if $g$ is locally isometric to the reference spacetime metric $g_0$. The same notion can be extended to also include scalar or tensor fields, where the equations $T[g,ϕ]=0$ are allowed to also depend on the extra fields $ϕ$. We give the first IDEAL characterization of cosmological FLRW spacet…
