Organic semiconductors exhibit properties of individual molecules and extended crystals simultaneously. The strongly bound excitons they host are typically described in the molecular limit, but excitons can delocalize over many molecules, raising the question of how important the extended crystalline nature is. Using accurate Green's function based methods for the electronic structure and non-perturbative finite difference methods for exciton-vibration coupling, we describe exciton interactions with molecular and crystal degrees of freedom concurrently. We find that the degree of exciton delocalization controls these interactions, with thermally activated crystal phonons predominantly coupling to delocalized states, and molecular quantum fluctuations predominantly coupling to localized states. Based on this picture, we quantitatively predict and interpret the temperature and pressure dependence of excitonic peaks in the acene series of organic semiconductors, which we confirm experimentally, and we develop a simple experimental protocol for probing exciton delocalization. Overall, we provide a unified picture of exciton delocalization and vibrational effects in organic semiconductors, reconciling the complementary views of finite molecular clusters and periodic molecular solids.
In organic photovoltaics, charges can separate efficiently even if their Coulomb attraction is an order of magnitude greater than the available thermal energy. Delocalization has been suggested to explain this fact, because it could increase the initial separation of charges in the charge-transfer (CT) state, reducing their attraction. However, understanding the mechanism requires a kinetic model of delocalized charge separation, which has proven difficult because it involves tracking the correlated quantum-mechanical motion of the electron and the hole in large simulation boxes required for d…
Modeling the charge-generation process is highly important to understand device physics and optimize power conversion efficiency of bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). Free carriers are generated by both ultrafast exciton delocalization and slow exciton diffusion and dissociation at the heterojunction interface. In this work, we developed a systematic numerical simulation to describe the charge-generation process by a modified drift-diffusion model. The transport, recombination, and collection of free carriers are incorporated to fully capture the device response. The theoret…
Efficient energy transport is highly desirable for organic semiconductor (OSC) devices such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, and photocatalytic systems. However, photo-generated excitons in OSC films mostly occupy highly localized states over their lifetime. Energy transport is hence thought to be mainly mediated by the site-to-site hopping of localized excitons, limiting exciton diffusion coefficients to below ~10^{-2} cm^2/s with corresponding diffusion lengths below ~50 nm. Here, using ultrafast optical microscopy combined with non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, we present evide…
Terahertz Raman spectroscopy was performed on high-mobility organic single-crystal semiconductors, by which the phonon energy at the Gamma point was qualified as a function of external uniaxial strain. The observation of peak shifts in Raman modes under uniaxial strain revealed that application of an external strain can effectively tune the intermolecular vibration that particularly correlates electron-phonon coupling. Terahertz Raman spectroscopy conducted in conjunction with molecular dynamics simulation provides an in-depth understanding of the recently discovered very large strain effect o…
The intermolecular lattice vibrations in small-molecule organic semiconductors have a strong impact on their functional properties. Existing models treat the lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. In this work, we use polarization-orientation (PO) Raman measurements to monitor the temperature-evolution of the symmetry of lattice vibrations in anthracene and pentacene single crystals. Combined with first-principles calculations, we show that at 10 K the lattice dynamics of the crystals are indeed harmonic. However, as the temperature is increased specific lattice modes gradually …
Ultrafast vibrational dynamics of inorganic-organic hybrid lead halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI$ in the room-temperature tetragonal phase is investigated under moderate photoexcitation slightly below the band gap. Time-resolved optical Kerr effect signal exhibits periodic modulations due to the libration and twisting of the methylammonium molecule at 4 and 8 THz, in addition to the inorganic sublattice deformation at 1.2 THz. These oscillations are heavily damped, and their frequencies exhibit blueshifts with increasing pump density, contrary to the expectation from conventional laser heating. Our…
By means of non-resonant Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we measure and assign the vibrational spectrum of two distinct two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite derivatives. These two samples are selected in order to probe the effects of the organic cation on lattice dynamics. One templating cation is composed of a phenyl-substituted ammonium derivative, while the other contains a linear alkyl group. We find that modes that directly involve the organic cation are more prevalent in the phenyl-substituted derivative. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the Ra…
We show clear experimental evidence of co-operative terahertz (THz) dynamics observed below 3 THz (~100 cm-1), for a low-symmetry Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) structure, termed MIL-140A [ZrO(O2C-C6H4-CO2)]. Utilizing a combination of high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation far-infrared spectroscopy, we measured low-energy vibrations originating from the hindered rotations of organic linkers, whose energy barriers and detailed dynamics have been elucidated via ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For completeness, we obtained Raman spe…
Charge transfer states in organic semiconductors play crucial roles in processes such as singlet fission and exciton dissociation at donor/acceptor interfaces. Recently, a time-resolved spectroscopy study of dinaphtho[2,3-b:2'3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]-thiophene (DNTT) thin films provided evidence for the formation of mixed Frenkel and charge-transfer excitons after the photoexcitation. Here we investigate optical properties and excitation dynamics of the DNTT thin films by combining ab initio calculations and a stochastic Schrodinger equation. Our theory predicts that the low-energy Frenkel exciton b…
Mode-selective vibrational control of charge transport in $π$-conjugated molecular materials
We investigate the electronic dynamics of a model organic photovoltaic (OPV) system consisting of polyphenylene vinylene (PPV) oligomers and a [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) blend using a mixed molecular mechanics/quantum mechanics (MM/QM) approach. Using a heuristic model that connects energy gap fluctuations to the average electronic couplings and decoherence times, we provide and estimate of the state-to-state internal conversion rates within the manifold of the lowest few electronic excitations. We show that the electronic dynamics of the OPV are dramatically altered by v…
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can provide exceptional porosity for molecular guest encapsulation useful for emergent applications in sensing, gas storage, drug delivery and optoelectronics. Central to the realisation of such applications however is the successful incorporation of a functional guest confined within the host framework. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, the feasibility of scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (nanoFTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the vi…
The first-principles simulation of the electronic structure of organic semiconductors in solution poses a number of challenges that are not trivial to address simultaneously. In this work, we investigate the effects and the mutual interplay of solvation, alkylization, and doping on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of sexithiophene, a representative organic semiconductor molecule. To this end, we employ (time-dependent) density functional theory in conjunction with the polarizable-continuum model. We find that the torsion between adjacent monomer units plays a key role, as it …
The facile synthesis and electronic properties of two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (2D HOIPs) make these self-assembled systems an important class of energy materials. The basic building blocks of these materials include inorganic lattice frameworks that often consist of lead-halide octahedra and organic molecules possessing ammonium functional groups. Understanding the coupling between the inorganic and organic layers is key to unraveling how the electronic properties of 2D HOIPs relate to their structures. In this work, we leverage Raman spectroscopy measurements and firs…
Vibrational overtone spectroscopy of molecules is a powerful tool for drawing information on molecular structure and dynamics. It relies on absorption of near infrared radiation (NIR) by molecular vibrations. Here we show the experimental evidence of giant enhancement of the absorption of light in solutions of organic molecules due to the switch from ballistic to diffusive propagation of light through a channel silicate glass waveguide. We also experimentally address a dynamics of absorption as a function of time of adsorption of the organic molecules on a waveguide. The observed enhancement i…
Molecular dynamics calculations were preformed on organic crystals 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) and 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS). Vibrational modes of the structures were investigated to examine the single unit cell phononic contribution of the organic crystals to their terahertz generating capabilities. Linear optical properties were also calculated from snapshots of the molecular dynamics structures through Green-Kubo relations, and compared with experimental transmission.
The Saturnian moon Titan has a thick, organic-rich atmosphere, and condensed phases of small organic molecules are anticipated to be stable on its surface. Of particular importance are crystalline phases of organics, known as cryominerals, which can play important roles in surface chemistry and geological processes on Titan. Many of these cryominerals could exhibit rich phase behavior, especially multicomponent cryominerals whose component molecules have multiple solid phases. One such cryomineral is the acetylene:ammonia (1:1) co-crystal, and here we use density functional theory-based ab ini…
Optical nonlinearities - how light-matter interactions are influenced by previous interactions with photons, are key resources in the contemporary photonics toolbox, relevant to quantum gate operations and all-optical switches. Optical nonlinearities of materials are often controlled at the microscopic level by chemical modification, which makes on-the-fly manipulation of such response challenging. Tunability of optical nonlinearities in the mid-IR is even less developed, hindering its applications in chemical sensing or IR photonic circuitry. Here, we report control of vibrational polariton c…
The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the Indole-7-carboxyldehyde (I7C) have been investigated by computational and experimental (UV-VIS, Raman) data analysis. Mulliken charge analysis, molecular electrostatic potential, and UV-VIS absorption and vibrational Raman studies have been used to analyze the intra-molecular charge transfer occurrence in the probe system. Observed high value of dipole moment, linear polarizability and first order hyperpolarizability values suggest that the indole derivative may indeed have possibility to show good NLO behaviour.
It is textbookly regarded that phonons, i.e., an energy quantum of propagating lattice waves, are the main heat carriers in perfect crystals. As a result, in many crystals, e.g., bulk silicon, the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity shows the classical 1/T relationship because of the dominant Umklapp phonon-phonon scattering in the systems. However, the thermal conductivity of many crystalline metal-organic frameworks is very low and shows no, a weakly negative and even a weakly positive temperature dependence (glass-like thermal conductivity). It has been in debate whether the thermal …
Materials based on the cubic perovskite unit cell continue to provide the basis for technologically important materials with two notable recent examples being lead-based relaxor piezoelectrics and lead-based organic-inorganic halide photovoltaics. These materials carry considerable disorder, arising from site substitution in relaxors and molecular vibrations in the organic-inorganics, yet much of our understanding of these systems derives from the initial classic work of Prof. Roger A. Cowley, who applied both theory and neutron scattering methods while at Chalk River Laboratories to the study…
Real-time time-dependent density functional theory, in conjunction with the Ehrenfest molecular dynamics scheme, is becoming a popular methodology to investigate ultrafast phenomena on the nanoscale. Thanks to recent developments, it is also possible to explicitly include in the simulations a time-dependent laser pulse, thereby accessing the transient excitation regime. However, the complexity entailed in these calculations calls for in-depth analysis of the accessible and yet approximate (either "dressed" or "bare") quantities, in order to evaluate their ability to provide us with a realistic…
We explore the generation of anti-Stokes fluorescence from strongly coupled organic dye microcavities following resonant ground-state excitation. We observe polariton emission along the lower polariton branch, with our results indicating that this process involves a return to the exciton reservoir and the absorption of thermal energy from molecules in a vibrationally excited ground-state. We speculate that the generation of a population of "hot" polaritons is enhanced by the fact that the cavity supresses the emission of Stokes-shifted fluorescence, as it is located energetically below the cut…
There is compelling evidence that charge carriers in organic semiconductors (OSs) self-localize in nano-scale space because of dynamic disorder. Yet, some OSs, in particular recently emerged high-mobility organic molecular crystals, feature reduced mobility at increasing temperature, a hallmark for delocalized band transport. Here we present the temperature-dependent mobility in two record-mobility OSs: DNTT (dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]-thiophene), and its alkylated derivative, C8-DNTT-C8. By combining terahertz photoconductivity measurements with fully atomistic non-adiabatic molecu…
Vapour-deposited organic glasses are currently in use in many optoelectronic devices. Their operation temperature is limited by the glass transition temperature of the organic layers and thermal management strategies become increasingly important to improve the lifetime of the device. Here we report the unusual finding that molecular orientation heavily influences heat flow propagation in glassy films of small molecule organic semiconductors. The thermal conductivity of vapour-deposited thin-film semiconductor glasses is anisotropic and controlled by the deposition temperature. We compare our …
Herein we employed high-resolution spectroscopic techniques in combination with periodic ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to establish the different polarization processes for a porous copper-based MOF, termed HKUST-1. We used alternating current measurements to determine its dielectric response between 4 Hz and 1.5 MHz where orientational polarization is predominant, while synchrotron infrared (IR) reflectance was used to probe the far-IR, mid-IR, and near-IR dielectric response across the 1.2 THz to 150 THz range (ca. 40 - 5000 cm^-1) where vibrational and optical polar…
Multi-molecular excited states accompanied by an intra- and inter-molecular geometric relaxation are commonly encountered in optical and electrooptical studies and applications of organic semiconductors as, for example excimers or charge transfer states. Understanding the dynamics of these states is crucial to improve organic devices such as light emitting diodes and solar cells. Their full microscopic description, however, demands for sophisticated tools such as ab-initio quantum chemical calculations which come at the expenses of high computational costs and are prone to errors by assumption…
The electronic wavefunctions of an atom or molecule are affected by its interactions with its environment. These interactions dictate electronic and optical processes at interfaces, and is especially relevant in the case of thin film optoelectronic devices such as organic solar cells. In these devices, charge transport and interfaces between multiple layers occur along the thickness or vertical direction, and thus such electronic interactions are crucial in determining the device properties. Here, we introduce a new in-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry data analysis method called DART with the a…
