Materials based on the cubic perovskite unit cell continue to provide the basis for technologically important materials with two notable recent examples being lead-based relaxor piezoelectrics and lead-based organic-inorganic halide photovoltaics. These materials carry considerable disorder, arising from site substitution in relaxors and molecular vibrations in the organic-inorganics, yet much of our understanding of these systems derives from the initial classic work of Prof. Roger A. Cowley, who applied both theory and neutron scattering methods while at Chalk River Laboratories to the study of lattice vibrations in SrTiO$_{3}$. Neutron scattering continues to play a vital role in characterizing lattice vibrations in perovskites owing to the simple cross section and the wide range of energy resolutions achievable with current neutron instrumentation. We discuss the dynamics that drive the phase transitions in the relaxors and organic-inorganic lead-halides in terms of neutron scattering and compare them to those in phase transitions associated with a ``central peak" and also a soft mode. We review some of the past experimental work on these materials and present new data from high-resolution time-of-flight backscattering spectroscopy taken on organic-inorganic perovskites. We will show that the structural transitions in disordered lead-based perovskites are driven by a broad frequency band of excitations.
We propose experimental verification and theoretical explanation of magnetic anomalies in the complex Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics like PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$. The theoretical part is based on our model of coexistence of long-range magnetic order and spin glass in the above substances. In our model, the exchange interaction is anisotropic, coupling antiferromagnetically $z$ spin components of Fe$^{3+}$ ions. At the same time, the $xy$ components are coupled by much weaker exchange interaction of ferromagnetic sign. In the system with spatial disorder (half of corresponding…

Paper offers a low-cost and widely available substrate for electronics. It posses alternative characteristics to silicon, as it shows low density and high-flexibility, together with biodegradability. Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. Fr…
We report x-ray diffraction, resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization of Sr3ErMn4-xGaxO10.5-d, in which A-site ordered tetragonal phase appears above x=1, and reveal that the system exhibits typical properties seen in the antiferromagnetic insulator with Mn3+. We succeed in preparing both A-site ordered and disordered phases for x=1 in different preparation conditions, and observe a significant decrease of the resistivity in the disordered phase. We discuss possible origins of the decrease focusing on the dimensionality and the disordered effect.
Single phase polycrystalline sample of perovskite Sr2TiMnO6 (STMO) has been successfully synthesized via solid state reaction route. Its detailed structural and physical properties have been studied using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization, specific heat, and dielectric measurements. Rietveld analysis of the powder XRD data and transmission electron microscopy studies confirm that STMO is not a double perovskite structure with Fm-3m space group. But it is a disordered perovskite structure with Pm-3m space group where Ti4+ and Mn4+ ions are randomly distributed a…
We have developed a multi-scale model for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (HPs) that applies quantum mechanical (QM) calculations of small HP supercell models to large coarse-grained structures. With a mixed quantum-classical hopping model, we have studied the effects of cation disorder on charge mobilities in HPs, which is a key feature to optimize their photovoltaic performance. Our multi-scale model parametrizes the interaction between neighboring methylammonium cations (MA$^+$) in the prototypical HP material, methylammonium lead triiodide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$, or MAPbI$_3$). For the …
Rare earth perovskite cobaltites are increasingly recognized as materials of importance due to rich physics and chemistry in their ordered-disordered structure for the same composition. Apart from colossal magnetoresistance effect, like manganites, the different forms of cobaltites exhibit interesting phenomena including spin, charge and orbital ordering, electronic phase separation, insulator-metal transition, large thermoelectric power at low temperature. Moreover, the cobaltites which display colossal magnetoresistance effect could be used as read heads in magnetic data storage and also in …
Inorganic-organic perovskites semiconductors are becoming increasingly interesting due to their remarkable optical properties, such as a high photoluminescence quantum yield and the possibility to show optical gain in a broad range of wavelengths. We have here simulated microcavities that embed MaPBI3 and 2D hybrid organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors by sandwiching such active layers between periodic, aperiodic and disordered photonic structures. We have carefully considered the refractive index dispersion of all the materials employed, such silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and the pe…
Diffuse scattering around the (110) reciprocal lattice point has been investigated by elastic neutron scattering in the paraelectric and the relaxor phases of the disordered complex perovskite crystal-Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3(PZN). The appearance of a diffuse intensity peak indicates the formation of polar nanoregions at temperature T*, approximately 40K above Tc=413K. The analysis of this diffuse scattering indicates that these regions are in the shape of ellipsoids, more extended in the <111> direction than in the <001> direction. The quantitative analysis provides an estimate of the correlation len…
We have studied the properties of the prototype hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite $\text{CH}_3^{}\text{NH}_3^{}\text{PbI}_3^{}$ using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). For our analysis we introduce the concept of $\text{CH}_3^{}\text{NH}_3^+$ "pair modes", that is, characteristic relative orientations of two neighboring $\text{CH}_3^{}\text{NH}_3^+$ cations. In our previous work [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 045201 (2016)] we identified two preferential orientations that a single $\text{CH}_3^{}\text{NH}_3^+$ cation adopts in a unit cell. The total number of relevant pairs can be re…
We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appear…
Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with general formula $APbX_4$ are attracting increasing interest as solution processable, white-light emissive materials. Recent studies have shown that their broadband emission is related to the formation of intra-gap color centers; however, the nature and dynamics of the emissive species have remained elusive. Here we show that the broadband photoluminescence of the 2D perovskites $(EDBE)PbCl_4$ and $(EDBE)PbBr_4$ stems from the localization of small polarons within the lattice distortion field. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and first-princi…
A new 3d-5d hybridized quadruple perovskite oxide, CaCu3Mn2Ir2O12, was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The Rietveld structure analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in an AA'3B4O12-type perovskite structure with space group Im-3, where the Ca and Cu are 1:3 ordered at fixed atomic positions. At the B site the 3d Mn and the 5d Ir ions are disorderly distributed due to a rare equal +4 charge states for both of them as determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions among Cu2+, Mn4+, and Ir4+ ions give…
Bulk quantum materials based on zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free organic tin halide perovskites have been developed for the first time, which give broadband Gaussian-shaped and strongly Stokes shifted emissions with quantum efficiencies of up to near-unity at room temperature due to excited state structural reorganization.
Anti-site disordering in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskites (containing Mo atoms at Fe positions, and viceversa) has recently been shown to have a dramatic influence in their magnetic and magnetotransport properties. In the present study, two polycrystalline Sr2FeMoO6 samples showing different degrees of anti-site disorder (a nominally 'ordered' sample with 70% of cationic ordering and a nominally 'disordered' sample with 18% of cationic ordering) have been examined by magnetic measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) techniques in the 15-500K temperature range. Our main finding is that the…
Compositional disorder induces myriad captivating phenomena in perovskites. Target-driven discovery of perovskite solid solutions has been a great challenge due to the analytical complexity introduced by disorder. Here, we demonstrate that an unsupervised deep learning strategy can find fingerprints of disordered materials that embed perovskite formability and underlying crystal structure information by learning only from the chemical composition, manifested in (A1-xA'x)BO3 and A(B1-xB'x)O3 formulae. This phenomenon can be capitalized to predict the crystal symmetry of experimental composition…
SrTi0.5Mn0.5O3 (STMO) is a chemically disordered perovskite having random distribution of Ti and Mn over 1b site. Striking discrepancies about the structural and magnetic properties of STMO demands detailed analysis which is addressed. To explore the magnetic ground state of STMO, static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied over a broad temperature range (2-300 K). The dc, ac magnetization show a cusp like peak at Tf ~ 14 K, which exhibits field and frequency dependence. The thermoremanent magnetization is characterized by using stretched exponential function and characteristic time su…

Excitonic 0D and 2D lead-halide perovskites have been recently developed and investigated as new materials for light generation. Here we report broadband (> 1 eV) emission from newly synthesised zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free colloidal Cs3Bi2I9 nanocrystals. We investigate the nature of their emissive states as well as the relative dynamics which are currently hotly debated. In particular, we find that the broadband emission is made by the coexistence of emissive excitons and sub-bandgap emissive trap-states. Remarkably, we observe evidence of enhanced Raman scattering from the ligands when a…
We report a structural reconstruction-induced high photoluminescence quantum yield of 25% in colloidal two-dimensional tin iodide nanosheets that are synthesized by a hot-injection method. The as-synthesized red-colored nanosheets of octylammonium tin iodide perovskites at room temperature transform to white hexagonal nanosheets upon washing or exposure to light. This structural change increases the bandgap from 2.0 eV to 3.0 eV, inducing a large Stokes shift and a broadband emission. Further, a long photoluminescence lifetime of about 1 microsecond is measured for the nanosheets. Such long-li…
Thin films of perovskite oxides offer the possibility of combining emerging concepts of strongly correlated electron phenomena and spin current in magnetic devices. However, spin transport and magnetization dynamics in these complex oxide materials are not well understood. Here, we experimentally quantify spin transport parameters and magnetization damping in epitaxial perovskite ferromagnet/paramagnet bilayers of La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$ (LSMO/SRO) by broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. From the SRO thickness dependence of Gilbert damping, we estimate a short spin dif…
Low as well as high-temperature electron and x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on a rare-earth free B-site disordered electron-doped manganite SrMn0.875.Mo0.125O3-δ in the temperature range of 83K to 637K. These studies reveal the occurrence of strong charge ordering (CO) at room temperature in a pseudo tetragonally distorted perovskite phase with space-group Pmmm. Non integral modulation vector of 8.95 times along [-110] indicates a charge density wave type modulation. The CO phase with basic perovskite structure Pmmm transforms to a charge disorder cubic phase through a first o…
Organic-inorganic coupling in the hybrid lead-halide perovskite is a central issue in rationalizing the outstanding photovoltaic performance of these emerging materials. Here we compare and contrast the evolution of structure and dynamics of the hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and the inorganic CsPbBr3 lead-halide perovskites with temperature, using Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Results reveal a stark contrast between their order-disorder transitions, abrupt for the hybrid whereas smooth for the inorganic perovskite. X-ray diffraction observes an intermediate incommensurate phase…
We show that the magnetism of double perovskite AFe_{1/2}M_{1/2}O_3 systems may be described by the Heisenberg model on the simple cubic lattice, where only half of sites are occupied by localized magnetic moments. The nearest-neighbor interaction J_1 is more than 20 times the next-nearest neighbor interaction J_2, the third-nearest interaction along the space diagonal of the cube being negligible. We argue that the variety of magnetic properties observed in different systems is connected with the variety of chemical ordering in them. We analyze six possible types of the chemical ordering in 2…
Mid-wave infrared (IR) and long-wave IR spectral ranges are of growing interest in various applications such as thermal imaging, thermography-based remote sensing, and night vision. Materials widely used for IR photodetectors in this regime include cadmium mercury telluride alloys and nanostructures of compound semiconductor. The materials development for IR optics will drive down the cost of IR optical systems and enable larger scale deployment. Here, we report a mid-wave IR responsive material composed of earth abundant and non-toxic elements, Sr1+xTiS3. It has a highly anisotropic quasi-one…
Structural disorder is common in metal-halide perovskites and important for understanding the functional properties of these materials. First-principles methods can address structure variation on the atomistic scale, but they are often limited by the lack of structure-sampling schemes required to characterize the disorder. In this work, structural disorder in the benchmark inorganic halide perovskites CsPbI$_3^{}$ and CsPbBr$_3^{}$ is computationally studied in terms of the three octahedral-tilting angles. The consequent variation in energetics and properties are described by three-dimensional…
Double perovskites provide a unique opportunity to induce and control multiferroic behaviors in oxide systems. The appealing possibility to design materials with a strong coupling between the magnetization and the polarization fields may be achieved in this family since these magnetic insulators can present structural self-ordering in the appropriate growth conditions. We have studied the functional properties of La2CoMnO6 and Bi2CoMnO6 epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Cation-ordered La2CoMnO6 films display a magnetic Curie temperature of 250 K while cation-disordered Bi2…
Although new photovoltaic materials, such as organic perovskites, have attracted much attention recently,\cite{perov1,perov2,perov3} zinc-blende semiconductors still play an important role, owing to their high efficiency and stability in real environments. For example, Cu$_2$ZnSnSe$_4$ \cite{AM2013} (CZTS) and Cu(In,Ga)Se$_2$ \cite{JACS2008} (CIGS), which are both based on chalcopyrite CuGa$X_2$ ($X=$ S, Se), have been considered as potential candidates for photovoltaics. It has been reported recently that the efficiency of CIGS has gone beyond 20\%, which is close to that of polycrystalline s…
The discovery of novel structural and physical properties in the $A$-site ordered manganite $R$BaMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$ ($R$ = Y and rare earth elements) has demanded new comprehension about perovskite manganese oxides. In the present study, the $A$-site disordered form, $R_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, has been investigated and compared with both $R$BaMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and $R_{0.5}A_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ ($A$: Sr, Ca) in the structures and electromagnetic properties. $R_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ has a primitive cubic perovskite cell in the structure and magnetic glassy states are dominant as its ground state, …

Strong deviations in the finite temperature atomic structure of halide perovskites from their average geometry can have profound impacts on optoelectronic and other device-relevant properties. Detailed mechanistic understandings of these structural fluctuations and their consequences remain, however, limited by the experimental and theoretical challenges involved in characterizing strongly anharmonic vibrational characteristics and their impact on other properties. We overcome some of these challenges by a theoretical characterization of the vibrational interactions that occur among the atoms …
With high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy measurements, the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) of double perovskite Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ having different degrees of Fe/Mo antisite disorder has been investigated with varying temperature. The DOS near $E_\mathrm{F}$ showed a systematic depletion with increasing degree of disorder, and recovered with increasing temperature. Altshuler-Aronov (AA) theory of disordered metals well explains the dependences of the experimental results. Scaling analysis of the spectra provides experimental indication for the functional form …
We present a semi-empirical effective Hamiltonian to capture effects of disorder associated with Ba and Sr cations occupying $A$ sites in (Ba$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)TiO$_3$ on its ferroelectric phase transition. Averaging between the parameters of first-principles effective Hamiltonians of end members BaTiO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$, we include a term with an empirical parameter to capture the local polarization and strains arising from the difference between ionic radii of Ba and Sr. Using mixed-space molecular dynamics of the effective Hamiltonian, we determine $T$-dependent ferroelectric phase transitions…
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites containing a mixture of iodide and bromide anions consistently perform better in donor-acceptor heterojunction solar cells than the standard methylammonium lead triiodide material. This observation is counterintuitive, as it is generally expected for photovoltaic materials that heterogeneities and compositional disorder cause reduced carrier diffusion length and conversion efficiency. Here, we combine ultrafast photoinduced electroabsorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy measurements to scrutinize the carrier dynamics in mixed-c…
We present a thorough dielectric investigation of the hexagonal perovskites La1.2Sr2.7IrO7.33 and La1.2Sr2.7RuO7.33 in a broad frequency and temperature range, supplemented by additional infrared measurements. The occurrence of giant dielectric constants up to 10^5 is revealed to be due to electrode polarization. Aside of dc and ac conductivity contributions, we detect two intrinsic relaxation processes that can be ascribed to ionic hopping between different off-center positions. In both materials we find evidence for charge transport via hopping of localized charge carriers. In the infrared r…
Methylammonium lead iodide, as related organometal halide perovskites, emerged recently as a particularly attractive material for photovoltaic applications. The origin of its appealing properties is sometimes assigned to its potential ferroelectric character, which remains however a topic of intense debate. Here, we rationalize from first-principles calculations how the spatial arrangement of methylammonium polar molecules is progressively constrained by the subtle interplay between their tendency to bond with the inorganic framework and the appearance of iodine octahedra rotations inherent to…
It is well known that disordered relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit local polar correlations. The origin of localized fields that disrupt long range polar order for different substitution types, however, is unclear. Currently, it is known that substituents of the same valence as Ti4+ at the B-site of barium titanate lattice produce random disruption of Ti-O-Ti chains that induces relaxor behavior. On the other hand, investigating lattice disruption and relaxor behavior resulting from substituents of different valence at the B-site is more complex due to the simultaneous occurrence of charge imbala…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged to the forefront of optoelectronic materials advancement in the past few years. Due to the nature of organic compounds within the perovskite structure, its optoelectronic properties are affected by complex interaction and correlation effects between the organic and inorganic ions. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe two broad plasmonic excitation from the calculated loss function (LF) -Im[\varepislon^{-1} (ω)], peak A' and B' at 3.28 eV and 4.26 eV, respectively. The presence of these two asymmetric peaks in the spectroscopic el…
The hybrid halide perovskites MAPbI$_{3}$, MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$, and MAPbCl$_{3}$ (MA - methylammonium) have been investigated using inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) with the aim of elucidating the impact of chloride substitution on the rotational dynamics of MA. In this context, we discuss the influence of the inelastic neutron scattering caused by low-energy phonons on the QENS resulting from the MA rotational dynamics in MAPbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$. Through a comparative temperature-dependent QENS investigation with different energy resolutions, which allow a wide Fourier…
The surfaces of perovskite oxides affect their functional properties, and while a bulk-truncated (1$\times$1) termination is generally assumed, its existence and stability is controversial. Here, such a surface is created by cleaving the prototypical SrTiO$_3$(001) in ultra-high vacuum, and its response to thermal annealing is observed. Atomically resolved nc-AFM shows that intrinsic point defects on the as-cleaved surface migrate at temperatures above 200\,$^\circ$C. At 400--500\,$^\circ$C, a disordered surface layer forms, albeit still with a (1$\times$1) pattern in LEED. Purely TiO$_2$-term…

Microscopic pathways of structural phase transitions are difficult to probe because they occur over multiple, disparate time and length scales. Using $in$ $situ$ nanoscale cathodoluminescence microscopy, we visualize the thermally-driven transition to the perovskite phase in hundreds of non-perovskite phase nanowires, resolving the initial nanoscale nucleation and subsequent mesoscale growth and quantifying the activation energy for phase propagation. In combination with molecular dynamics computer simulations, we reveal that the transformation does not follow a simple martensitic mechanism, a…
Understanding the origin of electron-phonon coupling in lead-halide perovskites (LHP) is key to interpreting and leveraging their optical and electronic properties. Here we perform femtosecond-resolved, optical-pump, electron-diffraction-probe measurements to quantify the lattice reorganization occurring as a result of photoexcitation in LHP nanocrystals. Photoexcitation is found to drive a reduction in lead-halide octahedra tilts and distortions in the lattice, a result of deformation potential coupling to low energy optical phonons. Our results indicate particularly strong coupling in FAPbBr…
In the family of double perovskites, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) has been so far observed only in half-metallic ferrimagnets such as the known case Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ where it has been assigned to the tunneling MR at grain boundaries due to the half-metallic nature. Here we report a new material-Tl$_2$NiMnO$_6$, a relatively ordered double perovskite stablized by the high pressure and high temperature synthesis-showing CMR in the vicinity of its Curie temperature. We explain the origin of such effect with neutron diffraction experiment and electronic structure calculations that reveal the ma…
