Superconductivity is often found in a dome around quantum critical points, i.e. 2nd-order quantum phase transitions. Here, we show that an enhancement of superconductivity is avoided at the critical pressure of the charge-density-wave (CDW) state in NbSe$_2$. We present comprehensive high-pressure Hall effect and magnetic susceptibility measurements of the CDW and superconducting state in NbSe$_2$. Initially, the 2nd-order CDW transition is suppressed smoothly but it drops to zero abruptly at PCDW = 4.4 GPa thus indicating a change to 1st order whilstthe superconducting transition temperature Tc rises continuously up to PCDW but is constant above. The putative 1st-order nature of the CDW transition is suggested as the cause for the absence of a superconducting dome at PCDW. Indeed, we show that the suppression of the superconducting state at low pressures is due to the loss of density of states inside the CDW phase whilst the initial suppression of the CDW state is accounted for by the stiffening of the underlying bare phonon mode.
We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.
We theoretically study the superconductivity in multiorbital superconductors based on a three-orbital tight-banding model. With appropriate values of the nearest-neighbour exchange $J_{1}^{αβ}$ and the next-nearest-neighbour exchange $J_{2}^{αβ}$, we find a two-dome structure in the $T_{c}-n$ phase diagram: one dome in the doping range $n<3.9$ where the superconducting (SC) state is mainly $s_{x^{2} y^{2}}$ component contributed by inter-orbital pairing, the other dome in the doping range $3.9<n<4.46$ where the SC state is mainly $s_{x^{2} y^{2}}+s_{x^{2}+y^{2}}$ components contributed by intr…
Combining electronic Raman scattering experiments with cellular dynamical mean field theory, we present evidence of the pseudogap in the superconducting state of various hole-doped cuprates. In Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d we track the superconducting pseudogap hallmark, a peak-dip feature, as a function of temperature T and doping p, well beyond the optimal one. We show that, at all temperatures under the superconducting dome, the pseudogap disappears at the doping pc, between 0.222 and 0.226, where also the normal-state pseudogap collapses at a Lifshitz transition. This demonstrates that the superconduct…
Based on recent progress in mathematical physics, we present a reliable method to analytically solve the linearized BCS gap equation for a large class of finite-range interaction potentials leading to s-wave superconductivity. With this analysis, we demonstrate that the monotonic growth of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ with the carrier density, $n$, predicted by standard BCS theory, is an artifact of the simplifying assumption that the interaction is quasi-local. In contrast, we show that any well-defined non-local potential leads to a "superconducting dome", i.e. a non-monoto…
The van-der-Waals gap of iron chalcogenide superconductors can be intercalated with a variety of inorganic and organic compounds that modify the electron doping level of the iron layers. In Lix(C3N2H10)0.37FeSe, a dome in the superconducting transition temperature Tc has been reported to occur in the doping range of x=0.06 to x=0.68. We use a combination of density functional theory and spin fluctuation theory to capture the evolution of superconducting transition temperatures theoretically. We clearly demonstrate how the changing electronic structure supports an increasing superconducting Tc.…
High quality Rb0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 single crystals are grown by a one step melting growth method. Superconductivity has been observed in all samples with x more than 0.05 and the maximum critical temperature Tc~32 K has been obtained in samples with x from 0.1 to 0.2 from electronic resistivity measurement. A superconducting dome in the electronic phase diagram of Tc as a function of Fe content has been observed for the first time in this AxFeySe2 (A=K,Rb) superconducting system. Two coexisting phases with structural modulation vectors of q1=1/5 [3a*+b*] and q2=1/2[a*+b*] have been observed in all s…
The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-δ (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate…
Hole doped cuprates show a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ which follows an universal dome-shaped behavior as function of doping. It is believed that the origin of superconductivity in cuprates is entangled with the physics of the pseudogap phase. An open discussion is whether the source of superconductivity is the same that causes the pseudogap properties. The $t$-$J$ model treated in large-N expansion shows $d$-wave superconductivity triggered by non-retarded interactions, and an instability of the paramagnetic state to a flux phase or $d$-wave charge density wave ($d$-CDW) state.…
We investigate the origin of superconductivity in doped SrTiO$_3$ (STO) using a combination of density functional and strong coupling theories within the framework of quantum criticality. Our density functional calculations of the ferroelectric soft mode frequency as a function of doping reveal a crossover from quantum paraelectric to ferroelectric behavior at a doping level coincident with the experimentally observed top of the superconducting dome. Based on this finding, we explore a model in which the superconductivity in STO is enabled by its proximity to the ferroelectric quantum critical…
When an ideal (no bulk pinning) flat type-II superconducting disk is subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field H_a, the first vortex nucleates at the rim when H_a = H_0, the threshold field, and moves quickly to the center of the disk. As H_a increases above H_0, additional vortices join the others, and together they produce a domelike field distribution of radius b. In this paper I present analytic solutions for the resulting magnetic-field and sheet-current-density distributions. I show how these distributions vary as b increases with H_a, and I calculate the corresponding field-increasing…

We report on the emergence of two disconnected superconducting domes in alkali-metal potassium (K)-doped FeSe ultra-thin films grown on graphitized SiC(0001). The superconductivity exhibits hypersensitivity to K dosage in the lower-Tc dome, whereas in the heavily electron-doped higher-Tc dome it becomes spatially homogeneous and robust against disorder, supportive of a conventional Cooper-pairing mechanism. Furthermore, the heavily K-doped multilayer FeSe films all reveal a large superconducting gap of ~ 14 meV, irrespective of film thickness, verifying the higher-Tc superconductivity only in …
Domelike magnetic-flux-density distributions previously have been observed experimentally and analyzed theoretically in superconducting films with edges, such as in strips and thin plates. Such flux domes have been explained as arising from a combination of strong geometric barriers and weak bulk pinning. In this paper we predict that, even in films with bulk pinning, flux domes also occur when vortices and antivortices are produced far from the film edges underneath current-carrying wires, coils, or permanent magnets placed above the film. Vortex-antivortex pairs penetrating through the film …
We measure the penetration depth $λ_{ab}(T)$ in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ using local techniques that do not average over the sample. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)\equiv1/λ_{ab}(T)^2$ has three main features. First, $ρ_s(T=0)$ falls sharply on the underdoped side of the dome. Second, $λ_{ab}(T)$ is flat at low $T$ at optimal doping, indicating fully gapped superconductivity, but varies more strongly in underdoped and overdoped samples, consistent with either a power law or a small second gap. Third, $ρ_s(T)$ varies steeply near $T_c$ for optimal and underdoping. These observations are …
Recent measurements of the doping dependence of the London penetration depth λ(x) at low temperatures in clean samples of isovalent BaFe_2[As_(1-x)P_x]_2 at T<<Tc [Hashimoto et al., Science 336, 1554 (2012)] revealed a peak in λ(x) near optimal doping x=0.3. The observation of the peak at T<<Tc, points to the existence of the quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome. We associate such a QCP with the onset of a spin- density-wave order and show that the renormalization of λ(x) by critical magnetic fluctuations, gives rise to the observed feature. We argue that the case of p…
We report a detailed spectroscopic study of the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-δ) using point contact junctions for x=0.125(underdoped), x=0.15(optimally doped) and x=0.17(overdoped). From our conductance measurements we are able to identify bosonic resonances for each doping. These excitations disappear above the critical temperature, and above the critical magnetic field. We find that the energy of the bosonic excitations decreases with doping, which excludes lattice vibrations as the paring glue. We conclude that the bosonic mediator for these cuprates is more likel…
We measure the electrical resistance of o-TaS3 between 1K and 300K under pressures up to 20GPa. We observe a gradual decrease of the charge density wave transition temperature with increasing pressure P following a mean-field quantum fluctuation power law with a quantum critical point at a pressure Pc = 11.5GPa. Around the quantum critical point we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc = 3.1K. Such dome is similar to superconducting domes around other types of order suggesting that the QCP is directly responsible for the enhancement of supercon…
We investigate the in-plane anisotropy of Fe 3d orbitals occurring in a wide temperature and composition range of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 system. By employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the lifting of degeneracy in dxz and dyz orbitals at the Brillouin zone corners can be obtained as a measure of the orbital anisotropy. In the underdoped regime, it starts to evolve on cooling from high temperatures above both antiferromagnetic and orthorhombic transitions. With increasing x, it well survives into the superconducting regime, but gradually gets suppressed and finally disappears aroun…
A dome-shaped phase diagram of superconducting critical temperature upon doping is often considered as a hallmark of unconventional superconductors. This behavior, observed in two-dimensional electron gases in $\mathrm{SrTiO}_3$-based interfaces whose electronic density is controlled by field effect, has not been explained unambiguously yet. Here, we elaborate a generic scenario for the superconducting phase diagram of these oxide interfaces based on Schrödinger-Poisson numerical simulations of the quantum well and transport experiments on a double-gate field-effect device. We propose that the…
Recent several experiments revealed that novel bipartite magnetic/superconducting phases widely exist in iron pnictides and chalcogenides. Nevertheless, the origin of the two-dome superconducting phases in iron-based compounds still remains unclear. Here we theoretically investigated the electronic structures, magnetic and superconducting properties of three representative iron-based systems, i.e. LaFeAsO1-xHx, LaFeAs1-xPxO and KFe2As2. We found that in addition to the degenerate in-plane anisotropic xz/yz orbitals, the quasi-degenerate in-plane isotropic orbitals drive these systems entering …
One of the most exciting discoveries in strongly correlated systems has been the existence of a superconducting dome on heavy fermions close to the quantum critical point where antiferromagnetic order disappears. It is hard even for the most skeptical not to admit that the excitations which bind the electrons in the Cooper pairs have a magnetic origin. As a system moves away from an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, (AFQCP) the correlation length of the fluctuations decreases and the system goes into a local quantum critical regime. The attractive interaction mediated by the non-local …
Among iron chalcogenide superconductors, FeS can be viewed as a simple, highly compressed relative of FeSe without nematic phase and with weaker electronic correlations. Under pressure, however, the superconductivity of stoichiometric FeS disappears and reappears, forming two domes. We perform electronic structure and spin fluctuation theory calculations for tetragonal FeS in order to analyze the nature of the superconducting order parameter. In the random phase approximation we find a gap function with d-wave symmetry at ambient pressure, in agreement with several reports of a nodal supercond…
Recent experiments on two iron-pnictide families suggest the existence of a single quantum phase transition (QPT) inside the superconducting dome despite the fact that two separate transition lines - magnetic and nematic - cross the superconducting dome at $T_{c}$. Here we argue that these two observations are actually consistent. We show, using a microscopic model, that each order coexists with superconductivity for a wide range of parameters, and both transition lines continue into the superconducting dome below $T_{c}$. However, at some $T_{\mathrm{merge}}<T_{c}$, the two transitions merge …
We measured the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a new layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics, the ternary telluride Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ with transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 4.3 K. The significant residual linear term of thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field and its rapid field dependence provide evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. By measuring resistivity under pressures, we reveal a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. The existence of gap nodes and superconducting dome suggests unconventional superconducti…
We analyze the two-orbital (with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals) analogue of the $t$-$J$-$U$ model as applied to the description of the copper-oxide monolayer deposited on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrate (CuO$_2$/BSCCO). We show, that an $extended$ $s$-$wave$ superconducting dome appears in the heavily hole overdoped regime of the model, with dominant contribution to the pairing coming from the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals. Also, the lower critical doping for the appearance of the SC state concurs with the Lifshitz Transition after which the hole-like Fermi pockets are create…
The nature of the pseudogap in high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconducting cuprates has been a major issue in condensed matter physics. It is still unclear whether the high-Tc superconductivity can be universally associated with the pseudogap formation. Here we provide direct evidence of the existence of the pseudogap phase via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in another family of high-Tc superconductor, iron-pnictides. Our results reveal a composition dependent pseudogap formation in the multi-band electronic structure of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. The pseudogap develops well above t…
Reproducing the electronic phase diagram of strongly correlated high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors in materials other than Cu-, Fe-, and Ni-based compounds has been a challenging task. Only very recently, a few material systems have partially achieved this goal by band engineering. In this work, we combine film growth, charge transport, magnetometry, Terahertz Spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy to investigate superconductivity and the normal state of ZrNx, which reveals a phase diagram that bears extraordinary similarities to those …
A detailed phenomenology of low energy excitations is a crucial starting point for microscopic understanding of complex materials such as the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Because of its unique momentum-space discrimination, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is ideally suited for this task in the cuprates where emergent phases, particularly superconductivity and the pseudogap, have anisotropic gap structure in momentum space. We present a comprehensive doping-and-temperature dependence ARPES study of spectral gaps in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212), covering…
The doping dependence of the micro-Raman spectra of high quality La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 microcrystals with x=0.0-0.45 has been investigated in the region 10-300 K. The phonon at ~100 cm^{-1} of the orthorhombic phase shows a classical soft mode behavior up to x=0.17, supporting its correlation with the LTO to HTT transition. In the xx/yy polarization spectra of the superconducting concentrations new modes at ~150 and 370 cm^{-1} related to the symmetry breaking and a broad band at ~280 cm^{-1} are attributed to the charge ordering at temperatures well above T_c. At all temperatures studied a correl…
Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by…
An enduring question in correlated systems concerns whether superconductivity is favoured at a quantum critical point (QCP) characterised by a divergent quasiparticle effective mass. Despite such a scenario being widely postulated in high Tc cuprates and invoked to explain non-Fermi liquid transport signatures, experimental evidence is lacking for a critical divergence under the superconducting dome. We use ultra-strong magnetic fields to measure quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x, revealing a dramatic doping-dependent upturn in quasiparticle effective mass at a critical metal-insu…
The in-plane London penetration depth, $Δλ(T)$, was measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ for five doping levels $x$ ranging from underdoped, $T_c$=11 K ($x$=0.17), to optimally doped, $T_c=$38 K ($x_\textmd{\scriptsize opt}$= 0.35). In the optimally doped samples, $Δλ(T)$ shows exponential saturation in $T \to 0$ limit suggesting a fully gapped superconductivity. The lowest-$T_c$ samples show much stronger non-exponential variation of $Δλ(T)$. Fitting the data to a power-law, $Δλ(T)= AT^n$, reveals a monotonic decrease of the exponent $n$ wi…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) / nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. There are two superconducting domes in this material. The first one appears at 0.03 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.2 with $T_{\rm c}$$^{max}$ = 27 K, and the second one at 0.25 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.75 with $T_{\rm c}$$^{max}$ = 30 K. By NMR and TEM, we demonstrate that a $C4$-to-$C2$ structural phase transition (SPT) takes place above both domes, with the transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ varying strongly with $x$. In the first dome, the S…
We use a first-principles based self-consistent momentum-resolved density fluctuation (MRDF) model to compute the combined effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions to describe the superconducting dome in the correlated MoS2 thin flake and TiSe2. We find that without including the electron-electron interaction, the electron-phonon coupling and the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) are overestimated in both these materials. However, once the full angular and dynamical fluctuations of the spin and charge density induced quasiparticle self-energy effects are included…

The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface exhibits gate tunable superconductivity with a domelike shape of $T_{\rm{C}}$ as a function of electron concentration. Here, we propose that the experimentally observed behavior can be explained as a direct effect of the dominant $extended$ $s$-$wave$ symmetry of the superconducting gap. Our results agree very well with the experimental data. As shown, neither the correlation effects nor the spin-orbit coupling influence significantly the physical picture of the paired state steaming out from our analysis.
Infinite-layer Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films with Sr doping level x from 0.08 to 0.3 were synthesized and investigated. We found a superconducting dome to be between 0.12 and 0.235 which is accompanied by a weakly insulating behaviour in both underdoped and overdoped regimes. The dome is akin to that in the electron-doped 214-type and infinite-layer cuprate superconductors. For x higher than 0.18, the normal state Hall coefficient ($R_{H}$) changes the sign from negative to positive as the temperature decreases. The temperature of the sign changes monotonically decreases with decreasing x from the o…
Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect we have measured the evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 as function of isoelectric substitution (As/P) for 0.41<x<1 (T_c up to 25 K). We find that the volume of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T_c. It is likely that these trends originate from the many-body interaction which give rise to superconductivity, rather than the underlying one-electron bandstructure.
The specific heat of the superconducting cuprates is calculated over the entire phase diagram. A d-wave BCS approach based on the large Fermi surface of Fermi liquid and band structure theory provides a good description of the overdoped region. At underdoping it is essential to include the emergence of a second energy scale, the pseudogap and its associated Gutzwiller factor, which accounts for a reduction in the coherent piece of the electronic Green's function due to increased correlations as the Mott insulating state is approached. In agreement with experiment, we find that the slope of the…
CsV3Sb5 is a newly discovered Z2 topological kagome metal showing the coexistence of a charge density wave (CDW)-like order at T* = 94 K and superconductivity (SC) at Tc = 2.5 K at ambient pressure. Here we study the interplay between CDW and SC in CsV3Sb5 via measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressures. We find that the CDW transition decreases with pressure and experience a subtle modification at Pc1 = 0.6-0.9 GPa before it vanishes completely at Pc2 = 2 GPa. Correspondingly, Tc(P) displays an unusual M-shaped double dome character with two maxima arou…
Superconductivity (SC) in so-called "unconventional superconductors" is nearly always found in the vicinity of another ordered state, such as antiferromagnetism, charge density wave (CDW), or stripe order. This suggests a fundamental connection between SC and fluctuations in some other order parameter. To better understand this connection, we used high-pressure x-ray scattering to directly study the CDW order in the layered dichalcogenide TiSe2, which was previously shown to exhibit SC when the CDW is suppressed by pressure [1] or intercalation of Cu atoms [2]. We succeeded in suppressing the …
Many issues concerning the origin of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) are still under debate. For example, how the magnetic ordering varies with doping and its relationship with the superconducting temperature; and why the maximal Tc always occurs near the quantum critical point. In this paper, taking hole-doped La2CuO4 as a classical example, we employ the first-principles band structure and total energy calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to explore how the symmetry-breaking magnetic ground state evolves with hole doping and the origin of a dome-shaped superconductivity region i…
When a symmetry-breaking phase of matter is suppressed to a quantum critical point (QCP) at absolute zero, quantum-mechanical fluctuations proliferate. Such fluctuations can lead to unconventional superconductivity, as evidenced by the superconducting domes often found near magnetic QCPs in correlated materials. However, it remains unclear whether this superconductivity mechanism holds for QCPs of the electronic nematic phase, characterized by rotational symmetry breaking. Here, we demonstrate from systematic elastoresistivity measurements that nonmagnetic FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ exhibits an elec…
Study and comparison of over 30 examples of electron doped BaFe2As2 for transition metal (TM) = Co, Ni, Cu, and (Co/Cu mixtures) have lead to an understanding that the suppression of the structural/antiferromagnetic phase transition to low enough temperature in these compounds is a necessary condition for superconductivity, but not a sufficient one. Whereas the structural/antiferromagnetic transitions are suppressed by the number of TM dopant ions (or changes in the c-axis) the superconducting dome exists over a limited range of values of the number of electrons added by doping (or values of t…

We use the dynamical cluster approximation to understand the proximity of the superconducting dome to the quantum critical point in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In a BCS formalism, $T_c$ may be enhanced through an increase in the d-wave pairing interaction ($V_d$) or the bare pairing susceptibility ($χ_{0d}$). At optimal doping, where $V_d$ is revealed to be featureless, we find a power-law behavior of $χ_{0d}(ω=0)$, replacing the BCS log, and strongly enhanced $T_c$. We suggest experiments to verify our predictions.
