Based on recent progress in mathematical physics, we present a reliable method to analytically solve the linearized BCS gap equation for a large class of finite-range interaction potentials leading to s-wave superconductivity. With this analysis, we demonstrate that the monotonic growth of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ with the carrier density, $n$, predicted by standard BCS theory, is an artifact of the simplifying assumption that the interaction is quasi-local. In contrast, we show that any well-defined non-local potential leads to a "superconducting dome", i.e. a non-monotonic $T_c(n)$ exhibiting a maximum value at finite doping and going to zero for large $n$. This proves that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the presence of a superconducting dome is not necessarily an indication of competing orders, nor of exotic superconductivity. Our results provide a prototype example and guide towards improving ab-initio predictions of $T_c$ for real materials.
We use the dynamical cluster approximation to understand the proximity of the superconducting dome to the quantum critical point in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In a BCS formalism, $T_c$ may be enhanced through an increase in the d-wave pairing interaction ($V_d$) or the bare pairing susceptibility ($χ_{0d}$). At optimal doping, where $V_d$ is revealed to be featureless, we find a power-law behavior of $χ_{0d}(ω=0)$, replacing the BCS log, and strongly enhanced $T_c$. We suggest experiments to verify our predictions.
SrTiO$_3$ exhibits superconductivity for carrier densities $10^{19}-10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$. Across this range, the Fermi level traverses a number of vibrational modes in the system, making it ideal for studying dilute superconductivity. We use high-resolution planar-tunneling spectroscopy to probe chemically-doped SrTiO$_3$ across the superconducting dome. The over-doped superconducting boundary aligns, with surprising precision, to the Fermi energy crossing the Debye energy. Superconductivity emerges with decreasing density, maintaining throughout the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) gap to transi…

How the macroscopic quantum coherence can resist to the decoherence attacks of high temperature is a major challenge for the science of the 21st century. Superstripes 2017 conference held in Ischia on June 2017 has been focused on the new physics of high $T_c$ superconductors made of complex quantum matter. Today the standard model of high $T_c$ superconductivity which grabs the physics of complex quantum matter is the multi-band Hubbard model where the dome of $T_c$ occurs by driving the chemical potential in the proximity of a topological Lifshitz transition. The multi-gap superconductivity …
The specific heat of the superconducting cuprates is calculated over the entire phase diagram. A d-wave BCS approach based on the large Fermi surface of Fermi liquid and band structure theory provides a good description of the overdoped region. At underdoping it is essential to include the emergence of a second energy scale, the pseudogap and its associated Gutzwiller factor, which accounts for a reduction in the coherent piece of the electronic Green's function due to increased correlations as the Mott insulating state is approached. In agreement with experiment, we find that the slope of the…
The maximum critical temperature for superconductivity in pressurized hydrides appears at the top of superconducting domes in Tc versus pressure curves at a particular pressure, which is not predicted by standard superconductivity theories. The a high-order anisotropic van Hove singularity near the Fermi level observed in band structure calculations of pressurized sulfur hydride, typical of a supermetal, has been associated with the array of metallic hydrogen wires modules forming a nanoscale heterostructure at atomic limit called superstripes phase. Here we propose that pressurized sulfur hyd…
Recent experiments on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ have shown that the superconducting energy gap to the transition temperature ratio maintains the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) value throughout its superconducting dome. Motivated by these and related studies, we show that the Cooper pairing mediated by a single soft transverse-optical phonon is the most natural mechanism for such a superconducting dome given experimental constraints, and present the microscopic theory for this pairing mechanism. Furthermore, we show that this mechanism is consistent with the $T^2$ resistivity in the normal state. Las…
Although the BCS theory of superconductivity is a well established theory, we have shown that the phenomenology predicted by this model is much richer than previously believed. By releasing the constraint that the attraction band is symmetric with respect to the chemical potential of the system, we observed that the energy gap may have more than one solution, the quasiparticle imbalance may appear in equilibrium, and the transition between the superconducting and the normal metal phases may be of the first order. The temperature of the superconductor-normal metal phase transition changes with …
The remarkable universality of the cuprate $T_c$ dome suggests a very fundamental unifying principle. Moreover, the superconducting gap is known to persist above $T_c$ in the pseudogap phase of all cuprates. So, contrary to BCS, the gap cannot be the order parameter of the transition. In this work, we show that both the $T_c$-dome and the pseudogap line $T^*(p)$ arise from a unique and identifiable principle: the interaction of localized `pairons' on an antiferromagnetic square lattice. The topological constraints on such preformed pairons give rise to both the $T_c$ dome and the pairing energ…
Recently room temperature superconductivity with Tc=15 degrees Celsius has been discovered in a pressurized complex ternary hydride, CSHx, which is a carbon doped H3S alloy. The nanoscale structure of H3S is a particular realization of the 1993 patent claim of superlattice of quantum wires for room temperature superconductors where the maximum Tc occurs at the top of a superconducting dome. Here we focus on the electronic structure of materials showing nanoscale heterostructures at atomic limit made of a superlattice of quantum wires like hole doped cuprate perovskites, organics, A15 intermeta…
Recent photoemission spectroscopy measurements (T. J. Reber et al., arXiv:1509.01611) of cuprate superconductors have inferred that the self-energy exhibits critical scaling over an extended doping regime, thereby calling into question the conventional wisdom that critical scaling exists only at isolated points. In particular, this new state of matter, dubbed a power-law liquid, has a self-energy whose imaginary part scales as $Σ^{\prime\prime}\sim(ω^{2}+π^{2}T^{2})^α$, with $α=1$ in the overdoped Fermi-liquid state and $α\leq0.5$ in the optimal to underdoped regime. Previously, we showed that…
We study the fate of superconductivity in the vicinity of a class of metallic quantum critical points obtained by coupling a Fermi surface to a critical boson. In such systems there is a competition between the enhanced pairing tendency due to the presence of long-range attractive interactions near criticality, and the suppression of superconductivity due to the destruction of the Landau quasiparticles. We show that there are regimes in which these two effects offset one another, resulting in a novel non-Fermi liquid fixed point with finite, scale invariant, BCS coupling. While these interacti…
Recent high pressure experiments discovered abnormal double-dome superconductivities in the newly-synthesized kagome materials $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs), which also host abundant emergent quantum phenomena such as charge density wave (CDW), anomalous Hall effect, nontrivial topological property, etc. In this work, by using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have studied the CDW state, superconductivity, and topological property in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ under pressures ($<$ 50 GPa). Based on the electron-phonon coupling theory, our calculated superconducting $T_\text{c}$s are…
We present a study of the lower critical field, \hc1, of \STO as a function of carrier concentration with the aim of quantifying the superfluid density. At low carrier concentration (i.e. the underdoped side), superfluid density and the carrier concentration in the normal state are equal within experimental margin. A significant deviation between the two numbers starts at optimal doping and gradually increases with doping. The inverse of the penetration depth and the critical temperature follow parallel evolutions as in the case of cuprate superconductors. In the overdoped regime, the zero-tem…
Superconductivity develops in bulk doped SrTiO$_3$ and at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface with a dome-shaped density dependence of the critical temperature $T_c$, despite different dimensionalities and geometries. We propose that the $T_c$ dome of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ is a shape resonance due to quantum confinement of superconducting bulk SrTiO$_3$. We substantiate this interpretation by comparing the exact solutions of a three-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional two-band BCS gap equation. This comparison highlights the role of heavy bands for $T_c$ in both geometries. For bulk SrTiO$_3$, w…
We investigate the properties of cuprate superconductors subject to applied current, using modified Gutzwiller projected d-wave BCS states. The parent states include quasiparticle and quasihole pockets, of variationally determined size, generated by the current. We identify two different mechanisms for the destruction of superconductivity at the critical current: at high hole doping (x>0.15) the pockets grow and completely destroy the gap, in a BCS-like mechanism; in the underdoped regime, the superfluid stiffness vanishes at a maximal phase twist with pairing still intact. This result is indi…
The coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in tantalum disulfide (2H-TaS$_2$) at ambient pressure, is boosted by applying hydrostatic pressures up to 30GPa, thereby inducing a typical dome-shaped superconducting phase. The ambient pressure CDW ground state which begins at TCDW = 76 K, with critically small Fermi surfaces, was found to be fully suppressed at Pc = 8.7GPa. Around Pc, we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc = 9.1 K. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure predict that, under ambient condit…
Although the pairing glue for the attractive quasiparticle interaction responsible for unconventional superconductivity in heavy electron materials has been identified as the spin fluctuations that arise from their proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point, there has been no model to describe their superconducting transition at Tc that is comparable to that found by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) for conventional superconductors where phonons provide the pairing glue. Here we propose a phenomenological BCS-like expression for Tc in heavy electron materials, that is based on the unu…

We consider the one-band Hubbard model on the square lattice by using variational and Green's function Monte Carlo methods, where the variational states contain Jastrow and backflow correlations on top of an uncorrelated wave function that includes BCS pairing and magnetic order. At half filling, where the ground state is antiferromagnetically ordered for any value of the on-site interaction $U$, we can identify a hidden critical point $U_{\rm Mott}$, above which a finite BCS pairing is stabilized in the wave function. The existence of this point is reminiscent of the Mott transition in the pa…
We report the observation of superconductivity in the CuIr2Se4 spinel induced by partial substitution of Pt for Ir. The optimal doping level for superconductivity in Cu(Ir1-xPtx)2Se4 is x = 0.2, where Tc is 1.76 K. A superconducting Tc vs. composition dome is established between the metallic, normal conductor CuIr2Se4 and semiconducting CuIrPtSe4. Electronic structure calculations show that the optimal Tc occurs near the electron count of a large peak in the calculated electronic density of states and that CuIrPtSe4 is a band-filled insulator. Characterization of the superconducting state in t…
The family of the superconducting quasi-skutterudites (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ features a structural quantum critical point at $x_c=0.9$, around which a dome-shaped variation of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is found. Using specific heat, we probe the normal and the superconducting states of the entire series straddling the quantum critical point. Our analysis indicates a significant lowering of the effective Debye temperature on approaching $x_c$, which we interpret as a result of phonon softening accompanying the structural instability. Furthermore, a remarkab…
Here we report the effect of structural and superconductivity properties on Ru doped CuIr2Te4 telluride chalcogenide. XRD results suggest that the CuIr2-xRuxTe4 maintain the disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164) for x less than 0.3. The lattice constants, a and c, both decrease with increasing Ru content. Temperature-dependent resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements are performed to characterize the superconducting properties systematically. Our results suggest that the optimal doping level for superconductivity in CuIr2-xRuxTe4 is x = 0.05, …
The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied for small values of the interaction strength (U of the order of the hopping amplitude t), using a variational ansatz well suited for this regime. The wave function, a refined Gutzwiller ansatz, has a BCS mean-field state with d-wave symmetry as its reference state. Superconducting order is found for densities n <1 (but not for n=1). This resolves a discrepancy between results obtained with the functional renormalization group, which do predict superconducting order for small values of U, and numerical simulations, which did not find superconductivit…
