Computing Scattering Resonances

The question of whether it is possible to compute scattering resonances of Schrödinger operators - independently of the particular potential - is addressed. A positive answer is given, and it is shown that the only information required to be known a priori is the size of the support of the potential. The potential itself is merely required to be $\mathcal{C}^1$. The proof is constructive, providing a universal algorithm which only needs to access the values of the potential at any requested point.

Generic simplicity of resonances in obstacle scattering

We show that all resonances in Dirichlet obstacle scattering (in $\mathbb{C}$ in odd dimensions and in the logarithmic cover of $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$ in even dimensions) are generically simple in the class of obstacles with $C^k$ (and $C^\infty$) boundaries, $k \geq 2$.

Inverse resonance scattering for Dirac operators on the half-line

We consider massless Dirac operators on the half-line with compactly supported potentials. We solve the inverse problems in terms of Jost function and scattering matrix (including characterization). We study resonances as zeros of Jost function and prove that a potential is uniquely determined by its resonances. Moreover, we prove the following: 1) resonances are free parameters and a potential continuously depends on a resonance, 2) the forbidden domain for resonances is estimated, 3) asymptotics of resonance counting function is determined, 4) these results are applied to canonical systems.

Lower bounds for resonance counting functions for obstacle scattering in even dimensions

In even dimensional Euclidean scattering, the resonances lie on the logarithmic cover of the complex plane. This paper studies resonances for obstacle scattering in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with Dirchlet or admissable Robin boundary conditions, when $d$ is even. Set $n_m(r)$ to be the number of resonances with norm at most $r$ and argument between $mπ$ and $(m+1)π$. Then $\lim\sup _{r\rightarrow \infty}\frac{\log n_m(r)}{\log r}=d$ if $m\in {\mathbb Z}\setminus \{ 0\}$.

A trace formula for scattering resonances of unbalanced quantum graphs

Given an unbalanced open quantum graph, we derive a formula relating sums over its scattering resonances with integrals outside a strip. We deduce lower bounds on the number of resonances (in bounded regions of the complex plane),that are independent of the size of the graph. We also deduce partial results indicating that Benjamini-Schramm convergence of open quantum graphs should imply convergence of the empirical spectral measures.

Resonances and balls in obstacle scattering with Neumann boundary conditions

We consider scattering by an obstacle in $\Real^d$, $d\geq 3 $ odd. We show that for the Neumann Laplacian if an obstacle has the same resonances as the ball of radius $ρ$ does, then the obstacle is a ball of radius $ρ$. We give related results for obstacles which are disjoint unions of several balls of the same radius.

Several complex variables and the distribution of resonances in potential scattering

We study resonances associated to Schrödinger operators with compactly supported potentials on ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq3$, odd. We consider compactly supported potentials depending holomorphically on a complex parameter $z$. For certain such families, for all $z$ except those in a pluripolar set, the associated resonance-counting function has order of growth $d$. Our proofs use some results from several complex variables.

Scattering resonances of large weakly open quantum graphs

In this paper, we consider a sequence of open quantum graphs, with uniformly bounded data, and we are interested in the asymptotic distribution of their scattering resonances. Supposing that the number of leads in our quantum graphs is small compared to the total number of edges, we show that most resonances are close to the real axis. More precisely, the asymptotic distribution of resonances of our open quantum graphs is the same as the asymptotic distribution of the square-root of the eigenvalues of the closed quantum graphs obtained by removing all the leads.

Inverse resonance scattering for Jacobi operators

We consider the Jacobi operator $(Jf)_n= a_{n-1}f_{n-1}+a_nf_{n+1}+b_nf_n$ on $\Z$ with a real compactly supported sequences $(a_n-1)_{n\in\Z}$ and $(b_n)_{n\in\Z}$. We give the solution of two inverse problems (including characterization): $ (a,b)\to \{$zeros of the reflection coefficient$\}$ and $(a,b)\to \{$bound states and resonances$\}$. We describe the set of "iso-resonance operators $J$", i.e., all operators $J$ with the same resonances and bound states.

Scattering resonances as viscosity limits

Using the method of complex scaling we show that scattering resonances of $ - Δ+ V $, $ V \in L^\infty_{\rm{c}} ( \mathbb R^n ) $, are limits of eigenvalues of $ - Δ+ V - i εx^2 $ as $ ε\to 0+ $. That justifies a method proposed in computational chemistry and reflects a general principle for resonances in other settings.

Some remarks on resonances in even-dimensional Euclidean scattering

The purpose of this paper is to prove some results about quantum mechanical black box scattering in even dimensions $d \geq 2$. We study the scattering matrix and prove some identities which hold for its meromorphic continuation onto $Λ$, the Riemann surface of the logarithm function. We relate the multiplicities of the poles of the continued scattering matrix to the multiplicities of the poles of the resolvent. Asymptotic number of scattering resonances for generic Schrodinger operators

Let -Delta+V be the Schrodinger operator acting on L^2(R^d,C) with d>2 odd. Here V is a bounded real or complex function vanishing outside the closed ball of center 0 and of radius a. We show for generic potentials V that the number of resonances of -Delta+V with modulus less than r is approximatively equal to a constant times a^dr^d.

Equivalence of resolvent and scattering resonances on quantum graphs

We discuss resonances for Schrödinger operators on metric graphs which consists of a finite compact part and a finite number of halflines attached to it; the vertex coupling is assumed to be of the $δ$-type or certain modifications of it. Using exterior complex scaling on the graph we show that the resolvent and scattering resonances coincide in this case.

Scattering resonances on truncated cones

We consider the problem of finding the resonances of the Laplacian on truncated Riemannian cones. In a similar fashion to Cheeger--Taylor, we construct the resolvent and scattering matrix for the Laplacian on cones and truncated cones. Following Stefanov, we show that the resonances on the truncated cone are distributed asymptotically as Ar^n + o(r^n), where A is an explicit coefficient. We also conclude that the Laplacian on a non-truncated cone has no resonances away from zero.

Resonances and scattering poles on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

On an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold (X,g), we show that the resolvent resonances coincide, with multiplicities, with the poles of the renormalized scattering operator, except for the special points n/2-k (with k>0 integer) where an additional term appears: this is the dimension of the kernel of the k-conformal Laplacian on the boundary when (X,g) is Einstein.
