We study certain resonance-counting functions for potential scattering on infinite cylinders or half-cylinders. Under certain conditions on the potential, we obtain asymptotics of the counting functions, with an explicit formula for the constant appearing in the leading term.
We consider a general elliptic operator in an infinite multi-dimensional cylinder with several distant perturbations; this operator is obtained by ``gluing'' several single perturbation operators $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}$, $k=1,\ldots,n$, at large distances. The coefficients of each operator $\mathcal{H}^{(k)}$ are periodic in the outlets of the cylinder; the structure of these periodic parts at different outlets can be different. We consider a point $λ_0 \in\mathds{R}$ in the essential spectrum of the operator with several distant perturbations and assume that this point is not in the essential spe…
We prove sharp upper bounds for the number of resonances in boxes of size 1 at high frequency for the Laplacian on finite volume surfaces with hyperbolic cusps. As a corollary, we obtain a Weyl asymptotic for the number of resonances in balls of size $T \to \infty$ with remainder $O(T^{3/2})$.
We show that the resonance counting function for a Schrödinger operator has maximal order of growth for generic sets of real-valued, or complex-valued, $L^\infty$-compactly supported potentials.
If the dimension $d$ is even, the resonances of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ with $V$ bounded and compactly supported are points on $Λ$, the logarithmic cover of ${\mathbb C} \setminus \{0\}$. We show that for fixed sign potentials $V$ and for nonzero integers $m$, the resonance counting function for the $m$th sheet of $Λ$ has maximal order of growth.
This paper proves sharp lower bounds on a resonance counting function for obstacle scattering in even-dimensional Euclidean space without a need for trapping assumptions. Similar lower bounds are proved for some other compactly supported perturbations of the Laplacian on even-dimensional Euclidean space, for example, for the Laplacian for certain metric perturbations. The proof uses a Poisson formula for resonances, complementary to one proved by Zworski in even dimensions.
We present the Laplace operator associated to a hyperbolic surface $Γ\setminus\mathbb{H}$ and a unitary representation of the fundamental group $Γ$, extending the previous definition for hyperbolic surfaces of finite area to those of infinite area. We show that the resolvent of this operator admits a meromorphic continuation to all of $\mathbb{C}$ by constructing a parametrix for the Laplacian, following the approach by Guillopé and Zworski. We use the construction to provide an optimal upper bound for the counting function of the poles of the continued resolvent.
We investigate how bounds of resonance counting functions for Schottky surfaces behave under transitions to covering surfaces of finite degree. We consider the classical resonance counting function asking for the number of resonances in large (and growing) disks centered at the origin of $\mathbb{C}$, as well as the (fractal) resonance counting function asking for the number of resonances in boxes near the axis of the critical exponent. For the former counting function we provide a transfer-operator-based proof that bounding constants can be chosen such that the transformation behavior under t…
We study the asymptotic distribution of the resonances near the Landau levels $Λ\_q =(2q+1)b$, $q \in \mathbb{N}$, of the Dirichlet (resp. Neumann, resp. Robin) realization in the exterior of a compact domain of $\mathbb{R}^3$ of the 3D Schr{ö}dinger operator with constant magnetic field of scalar intensity $b\textgreater{}0$. We investigate the corresponding resonance counting function and obtain the main asymptotic term. In particular, we prove the accumulation of resonances at the Landau levels and the existence of resonance free sectors. In some cases, it provides the discreteness of the s…
In even dimensional Euclidean scattering, the resonances lie on the logarithmic cover of the complex plane. This paper studies resonances for obstacle scattering in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with Dirchlet or admissable Robin boundary conditions, when $d$ is even. Set $n_m(r)$ to be the number of resonances with norm at most $r$ and argument between $mπ$ and $(m+1)π$. Then $\lim\sup _{r\rightarrow \infty}\frac{\log n_m(r)}{\log r}=d$ if $m\in {\mathbb Z}\setminus \{ 0\}$.
We study the leading coefficient in the asymptotical formula $ N (R) = \frac{W}π R + O (1) $, $ R \to \infty $, for the resonance counting function $ N (R)$ of Schrödinger Hamiltonians with point interactions. For such Hamiltonians, the Weyl-type and non-Weyl-type asymptotics of $N (R)$ was introduced recently in a paper by J. Lipovský and V. Lotoreichik (2017). In this note, we prove that the Weyl-type asymptotics is generic.
For a conformally compact manifold that is hyperbolic near infinity and of dimension $n+1$, we complete the proof of the optimal $O(r^{n+1})$ upper bound on the resonance counting function, correcting a mistake in the existing literature. In the case of a compactly supported perturbation of a hyperbolic manifold, we establish a Poisson formula expressing the regularized wave trace as a sum over scattering resonances. This leads to an $r^{n+1}$ lower bound on the counting function for scattering poles.
We consider the meromorphic operator-valued function 1-K(z) = 1-A(z)/z where A(z) is holomorphic on the domain D, and has values in the class of compact operators acting in a given Hilbert space. Under the assumption that A(0) is a selfadjoint operator which can be of infinite rank, we study the distribution near the origin of the characteristic values of 1-K(z), i.e. the complex numbers w for which the operator 1-K(w) is not invertible, and we show that generically the characteristic values of 1-K(z) converge to 0 with the same rate as the eigenvalues of A(0). We apply our abstract results to…
We study the asymptotic distribution of resonances for scattering by compactly supported potentials in hyperbolic space. We first establish an upper bound for the resonance counting function that depends only on the dimension and the support of the potential. We then establish the sharpness of this estimate by proving the a Weyl law for the resonance counting function holds in the case of radial potentials vanishing to some finite order at the edge of the support. As an application of the existence of potentials that saturate the upper bound, we derive additional resonance asymptotics that hol…
We consider the radial Dirac operator with compactly supported potentials. We study resonances as the poles of scattering matrix or equivalently as the zeros of modified Fredholm determinant. We obtain the following properties of the resonances: 1) asymptotics of counting function, 2) in the massless case we get the trace formula in terms of resonances.
We study the spectral theory of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with ends of warped product type. Our main result is an upper bound on the resonance counting function with a geometric constant expressed in terms of the respective Weyl constants for the core of the manifold and the base manifold defining the ends.
For certain compactly supported metric and/or potential perturbations of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, we establish an upper bound on the resonance counting function with an explicit constant that depends only on the dimension, the radius of the unperturbed region in $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, and the volume of the metric perturbation. This constant is shown to be sharp in the case of scattering by a spherical obstacle.
We consider resonances associated to the operator $-\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V(x)$, where $V(x)=V_+$ if $x>x_M$ and $V(x)=V_-$ if $x<-x_M$, with $V_+\not = V_-$. We obtain asymptotics of the resonance-counting function in several regions. Moreover, we show that in several situations, the resonances, $V_+$, and $V_-$ determine $V$ uniquely up to translation.
We study resonances associated to Schrödinger operators with compactly supported potentials on ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq3$, odd. We consider compactly supported potentials depending holomorphically on a complex parameter $z$. For certain such families, for all $z$ except those in a pluripolar set, the associated resonance-counting function has order of growth $d$. Our proofs use some results from several complex variables.
We consider massless Dirac operators on the half-line with compactly supported potentials. We solve the inverse problems in terms of Jost function and scattering matrix (including characterization). We study resonances as zeros of Jost function and prove that a potential is uniquely determined by its resonances. Moreover, we prove the following: 1) resonances are free parameters and a potential continuously depends on a resonance, 2) the forbidden domain for resonances is estimated, 3) asymptotics of resonance counting function is determined, 4) these results are applied to canonical systems.
