We study collective self-organization of weakly magnetic active suspensions in a uniform external field by analyzing a mesoscopic continuum model that we have recently developed. Our model is based on a Smoluchowski equation for a particle probability density function in an alignment field coupled to a mean-field description of the flow arising from the activity and the alignment torque. Performing linear stability analysis of the Smoluchowski equation and the resulting orientational moment equations combined with non-linear 3D simulations, we provide a comprehensive picture of instability patterns as a function of strengths of activity and magnetic field. For sufficiently high activity and moderate magnetic field strengths, the competition between the activity-induced flow and external magnetic torque renders a homogeneous polar steady state unstable. As a result, four distinct dynamical patterns of collective motion emerge. The instability patterns for pushers include traveling bands governed by bend-twist instabilities and dynamical aggregates. For pullers, finite-sized and system spanning pillar-like concentrated regions predominated by splay deformations emerge which migrate in the field direction. Notably, at very strong magnetic fields, we observe a reentrant hydrodynamic stability of the polar steady state.
In this review article, we focus on collective motion in externally driven colloidal suspensions, as well as how these collective effects can be harnessed for use in microfluidic applications. We highlight the leading role of hydrodynamic interactions in the self-assembly, emergent behavior, transport, and mixing properties of colloidal suspensions. A special emphasis is given to recent numerical methods to simulate driven colloidal suspensions at large scales. In combination with experiments, they help us to understand emergent dynamics and to identify control parameters for both individual a…
Tagged particle in a sheared suspension: effective temperature determines density distribution in a slowly varying external potential beyond linear response
We investigate the sedimentation of initially packed paramagnetic particles in presence of a homogeneous external magnetic field, in a Hele-Shaw cell filled with water. Although the magnetic susceptibility of the particles is small and the particle-particle induced magnetic interactions are significantly smaller compared to the gravitational acceleration, we do observe a measurable reduction of the decompaction rate as the amplitude of the applied magnetic field is increased. While induced magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between particles can be either attracting or repulsive depending on …
This paper studies the influence of orienting external fields on pattern formation, particularly mesoscale turbulence, in microswimmer suspensions. To this end, we apply a hydrodynamic theory that can be derived from a microscopic microswimmer model [Phys. Rev. E 97, 022613 (2018)]. The theory combines a dynamic equation for the polar order parameter with a modified Stokes equation for the solvent flow. Here, we extend the model by including an external field that exerts an aligning torque on the swimmers (mimicking the situation in chemo-, photo-, magneto- or gravitaxis). Compared to the fiel…
Using the method of Brownian dynamics, we investigate the dynamic properties of a 2d suspension of active disks at high Péclet numbers using active microrheology. In our simulations the tracer particle is driven either by a constant or an oscillatory external force. In the first case, we find that the mobility of the tracer initially appreciably decreases with the external force and then becomes approximately constant for larger forces. For an oscillatory driving force we find that the dynamic mobility shows a quite complex behavior -- it displays a highly nonlinear behavior on both the amplit…
Near field hydrodynamic interactions are essential to determine many important emergent behaviors observed in active suspensions, but have not been successfully modeled so far. In this work we propose an effective model capable of efficiently capturing the essence of the near field hydrodynamic interactions, validated numerically by a pedagogic model system consisting of an E. coli and a spherical tracer. The proposed model effectively captures all the details of near field hydrodynamics through only a tensorial coefficient of resistance, which is fundamentally different from, and thus cannot …

Prior studies have revealed that nonzero odd viscosity is an essential property for chiral active fluids. Here we report that such an odd viscosity also exists in suspensions of non-active or non-externally-driven but chirally-shaped particles. Computational simulations are carried out for monolayers of dense ratchets in simple shear and planar extensional flows. The contact between two ratchets can be either frictionless or infinitely-frictional, depending on their teeth and sliding directions at the contact point. Our results show that the ratchet suspension has the intermediate shear/extens…
Understanding the rheology of colloidal suspensions is crucial in the formulation of a wide selection of industry-relevant products. To characterise the viscoelastic behaviour of these soft materials, one can analyse the microscopic dynamics of colloidal tracers diffusing through the host fluid and generating local deformations and stresses. This technique, referred to as microrheology, links the bulk rheology of fluids to the microscopic dynamics at the particle scale. If tracers are subjected to external forces, rather than freely diffusing, it is called active microrheology. Motivated by th…
We study the motion of radially driven fluid-immersed particles in a novel Hele-Shaw cell with open boundaries. The initially uniform suspension forms a striped pattern within a specific range of horizontal oscillation frequencies and for sufficiently large amplitudes. We observe that the initial coarsening dynamics of the stripes gradually slows down and the pattern reaches a steady state after a few minutes. The distance between the stripes in the steady state exhibits an exponentially saturating increase with increased oscillation amplitude or frequency. The width of the stripes decreases a…
Suspensions of magnetic nanoplatelets in isotropic solvents are very interesting examples of ferrofluids. It has been shown that above a certain concentration ΦNI such suspensions form a ferromagnetic nematic phase, which makes this system a unique example of a dipolar fluid. The formation of a nematic phase is driven by anisotropic electrostatic and long-range dipolar magnetic interactions. Here, we present studies of the evolution of short range positional and orientational magnetic order in the suspensions with volume fractions below and above ΦNI, using small angle neutron scattering (SANS…
We consider binary suspension of rough, circular particles in two dimensions under athermal conditions. The mean density of the system is kept constant. The suspension is subject to a time-independent external drive in response to which one half of the particles are pulled along the field direction whereas the other half is pushed in the opposite direction. Simulating the system with different magnitude of external drive in steady state, we obtain oppositely moving macroscopic lanes only for a moderate range of external drive. Below as well as above the range we obtain states with no lane. Hen…
Particle-tracking microrheology of dilute active (self-propelled) colloidal suspensions is studied by considering the external force required to maintain the steady motion of an immersed constant-velocity colloidal probe. If the probe speed is zero, the suspension microstructure is isotropic but exhibits a boundary accumulation of active bath particles at contact due to their self-propulsion. As the probe moves through the suspension, the microstructure is distorted from the nonequilibrium isotropic state, which allows us to define a microviscosity for the suspension using the Stokes drag law.…
Field-induced reorientation of colloidal particles is especially relevant to manipulate the optical properties of a nanomaterial for target applications. We have recently shown that surprisingly feeble external stimuli are able to transform uniaxial nematic liquid crystals (LCs) of cuboidal particles into biaxial nematic LCs. In the light of these results, here we apply an external field that forces the reorientation of colloidal cuboids in nematic LCs and sparks a uniaxial-to-biaxial texture switching. By Dynamic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the unsteady-state reorientation dynamics…
Bacterial suspensions--a premier example of active fluids--show an unusual response to shear stresses. Instead of increasing the viscosity of the suspending fluid, the emergent collective motions of swimming bacteria can turn a suspension into a "superfluid" with zero apparent viscosity. Although the existence of active "superfluids" has been demonstrated in bulk rheological measurements, the microscopic origin and dynamics of such an exotic phase have not been experimentally probed. Here, using high-speed confocal rheometry, we study the dynamics of concentrated bacterial suspensions under si…

Many active biological particles, such as swimming microorganisms or motor-proteins, do work on their environment by going though a periodic sequence of shapes. Interactions between particles can lead to the phase-synchronization of their duty cycles. Here we consider collective dynamics in a suspension of such active particles coupled through hydrodynamics. We demonstrate that the emergent non-equilibrium states feature stationary patterned flows and robust unidirectional pumping states under confinement. Moreover the phase-synchronized state of the suspension exhibits spatially robust chimer…
In a microrheological set-up a single probe particle immersed in a complex fluid is exposed to a strong external force driving the system out of equilibrium. Here, we elaborate analytically the time-dependent response of a probe particle in a dilute suspension of Brownian particles to a large step-force, exact in first order of the density of the bath particles. The time-dependent drift velocity approaches its stationary state value exponentially fast for arbitrarily small driving in striking contrast to the power-law prediction of linear response encoded in the long-time tails of the velocity…
Active fluids comprise a variety of systems composed of elements immersed in a fluid environment which can convert some form of energy into directed motion; as such they are intrinsically out-of-equilibrium in the absence of any external forcing. A fundamental problem in the physics of active matter concerns the understanding of how the characteristics of the autonomous propulsion and agent-agent interactions determine the collective dynamics of the system. We study numerically suspensions of self-propelled diffusiophoretic colloids, in (quasi)-2d configurations, accounting for both dynamicall…
Dense particulate suspensions can not only increase their viscosity and shear thicken under external forcing, but also jam into a solid-like state that is fully reversible when the force is removed. An impact on the surface of a dense suspension can trigger this jamming process by generating a shear front that propagates into the bulk of the system. Tracking and visualizing such a front is difficult because suspensions are optically opaque and the front can propagate as fast as several meters per second. Recently, high-speed ultrasound imaging has been used to overcome this problem and extract…

A dilute suspension of active Brownian particles in a dense compressible viscoelastic fluid, forms a natural setting to study the emergence of nonreciprocity during a dynamical phase transition. At these densities, the transport of active particles is strongly influenced by the passive medium and shows a dynamical jamming transition as a function of activity and medium density. In the process, the compressible medium is actively churned up -for low activity, the active particle gets self-trapped in a spherical cavity of its own making, while for large activity, the active particle ploughs thro…
By performing dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the microrheology of isotropic suspensions of hard-core colloidal cuboids. In particular, we infer the local viscoelastic behaviour of these fluids by studying the dynamics of a probe spherical particle that is incorporated in the host phase and is dragged by an external force. This technique, known as active microrheology, allows one to characterise the microscopic response of soft materials upon application of a constant force, whose intensity spans here three orders of magnitude. By tuning the geometry of cuboids from oblate to p…
The use of electrophoretic forces to tune friction at material-nanoparticle-liquid interfaces with static or low frequency (0.6-50 mHz) electric fields is reported for the first time. External electric fields were employed to reposition negatively charged TiO2 or positively charged Al2O3 nanoparticles suspended in water in directions perpendicular to a planar platinum surface of a quartz crystal microbalance, which was then used to monitor frictional shear forces at the interface. Active electro-tunable control of friction has been demonstrated for both TiO2 and Al2O3 suspensions. For TiO2 sus…
We theoretically study the effect of external deformation on activated structural relaxation and elementary aspects of the nonlinear mechanical response of glassy hard sphere fluids in the context of the nonequilibrium version of the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory. ECNLE theory describes activated relaxation as a coupled local-nonlocal event involving local caging and longer range collective elasticity, with the latter becoming more important with increasing packing fraction. The central new question is how this physical picture, and the relative importance o…
The presence of active forces in various biological and artificial systems may change how those systems behaves under forcing. We present a minimal model of a suspension of passive or active swimmers driven on the boundaries by time-dependent forcing. In particular, we consider a time-periodic drive from which we determine the linear response functions of the suspension. The meaning of these response functions are interpreted in terms of the storage and dissipation of energy through the particles within the system. We find that while a slowly driven active system responds in a way similar to a…
Surface-driven flows are ubiquitous in nature, from subcellular cytoplasmic streaming to organ-scale ciliary arrays. Here, we model how confined geometries can be used to engineer complex hydrodynamic patterns driven by activity prescribed solely on the boundary. Specifically, we simulate light-controlled surface-driven active matter, probing the emergent properties of a suspension of active colloids that can bind and unbind pre-patterned surfaces of a closed microchamber, together creating an active carpet. The attached colloids generate large scale flows that in turn can advect detached part…
